THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Welp and there's the first episode. It felt kinda rushed but whatever. Hopefully they don't censor too much despite it being censored quite a bit already. Well, BDs will hopefully remove that.

They depicted human reactions pretty damn well in this though. I'm surprised at some of the scenes used already. Production values is good as well so that's a keeper but the pacing wasn't good.

Halfway through the episode now, and I'm not liking it much so far. Spending half the episode on introducing Akari is a really weak opening compared to the Mangas first Chapter. Been a long time now since I read anything of it, probably Chapter 40-something, but I was looking forward to this.

Time to watch the second half.

Edit: Also, watching it on Crunchyroll. Fuck that censoring! What the hell?? Why do they do this!?

Okay, done with the episode.

Gotta say, that was a pretty weak episode. How is that gonna entice anyone who hasn't read the Manga to watch this?
I get that they want to introduce charcters and build the world but pretty much nothing in here hinted at this being a balls blazing over the top action show with awesome and creative superpowers.

Edit: TL;DR: I want this (MANGA SPOILER; NSFW)

Mod Edit: Added NSFW tag

Holy censors. Feels like TG all over again with the censorship. Not sure if I'm gonna enjoy a show riddled with censors. Other than that, the show is what I expected, but it was a pretty weak first episode.

Haven't read any of this arc in the manga. I'd say it was a decent start, but that censoring is just too much lol. Like two-thirds of the screen completely black lol.

It was a good first episode to the series, but the censorship was really bad. It will not do justice for this series... Production was good and expecting some sick fights soon. I hope the censorship doesn't keep up for the whole series.

Yep this is gonna be a butchered adaption with lots of horrid censors -.-
And that was only against a bear so how much censoring will they put against a cockroach when they get their heads ripped...etc

Already this rushed <_< They didn't even show Alex and Marcos's story. Not sure if they'll show it later but meh.

Michelle and Akari are already shippable XD Her joke about putting the catheter for him was lol XD

Digging it's own grave with these censoring.

Otherwise boring rushed episode.

Never liked the manga much anyways,so hopefully this won't be too painful to watch otherwise I'm a drop this.

Also can't help but think this was cheaply made/produced cause it sure looks that way.

I actually enjoyed this episode and have very few complaints. Only noticed the censor during the fight.

I already like Michelle-chan's sense of humor.

can't even blame funimation for censorship but honestly don't produce an explicit series just to have it censored

there are parts in the manga that will probably never air if the censoring is this bad over the first episode

you can't see anything what's happening in a fight this way and this is something you would watch for the fights
also I do enjoy gore, it makes it more realistic and stuff

Yeah, this is a pretty violent series and over the top violence and gore is one the series' selling points.

If they keep this up, 5 out of 20 minutes will just be black and white screens.

Lol so they have to deal with those terra formars all because they decided to send cockroaches there in the 1st place? Why would you even try it with those damn insects....

Btw how did that virus even end up on earth??

Anyway that was a bit boring... and there's too much muscles oO Will maybe watch ep 2 if I'm bored and see if I'll drop it or not there

The first episode was OK generally.

I don't really like how they basically skipped across the chapters developing the motivations / pasts of the main bunch but I guess for adaptation purposes it couldn't be helped. I do hope they go into them later on though, else well... the tragedy wouldn't be tragic.

Will probably continue for a few more episodes to see where this leads.

I didn't enjoy it the first time through. Then I read the comments on this thread
which got me motivated to watch it a second time. I liked it more. Definitely
worth at least seeing Episode 2. The censoring isn't bothering me, since I just
used my imagination. Besides, there must have been lots of X-rated scenes
between Akari and his childhood girlfriend Yuriko when they were kids growing
up in the orphanage, and I suspect those won't be included on the Blu-ray/DVD
either.

The title of Episode 1 in Japanese is: . 01 SYMPTOM 変異
In the English subs, they translated 変異 as "variation". This looks wrong to me.
Literally, 変異 means "to become different". It is pronounced as "hen i". It can
be translated as "variation", but other options are "mutation", "mutant" and
"variant". Take your pick. But I think that "variation" seems like a poor choice.
My favorite is "mutation".

i'm sure the manga is a lot better, but i'm not interested in reading it - i don't think i could ever take this premise as seriously as it's being presented. very stereotypical cast. it'd be a lot easier to suspend the viewer's disbelief in a more uncensored format; perhaps this would work better as an OVA or film and not a full-fledged TV anime.

just not for me, i guess. dropped.

It wasn't bad..I was hoping for a bit more though. If that censoring keeps up then its just going to end up as trash just as Tokyo Ghoul did. The concept is great though, so i'll keep watching.

My native language is Spanish, but I'll try to write this in English.
Chapter after all was not so bad, you can say that they went straight to the point just showed us the story of Akari and his fight against the bear without showing the stories of the other crew members of Annex 1, I would have loved to deepen more Alex, Mark and Sheila his life in México and because Grand wing crew of Annex 1 as they do in the manga joined, but hey we will have to see how it develops the plot and hopefully less censorship.

Judging from what I've heard about this manga, this show is firmly going to be in "So bad its good" territory. And from the looks of things, it seems like that's going to be the case. Only real concern is the censoring, that was pretty awful, couldn't tell what was going on at all for some parts, if they keep that up its going to be so bad its horrible instead of so bad its good.

Now that was quite the opening to this series and episode, although the censorship ruined most of the fight with the bear.

It was rather interesting to find out that the disease came from outer space to Earth.

LOL, Michelle-chan was really hilarious when she said that she attached the tube to his D XD.

Negative oppai looool

100 members at the start of the mission eh... they're going to be lucky if 10 make it back lol (considering what happened in that OVA episode).

I'm really curious to see what happens next... I guess some of the crew will get killed...

Hunter x Hunter's Chimera Ants + Shingeki no Kyojin + Tiger and Bunny atmosphere + Space Brothers spacey feel + Tokyo Ghoul censoring! I'm quite interested to see where this goes. I'm getting vibes of so many other good shows. (And I'm not saying this show is unoriginal but that it feels like those shows)

Anyway, I expected a more mellow sci-fi feel instead of this action-packed hollywood-style episode. It really didn't feel that Japanese honestly. More like one of those American action movies in cartoon form, which is what I thought about Tiger and Bunny as well. I'm not a big fan of the characters so far but the seiyuu are doing well! I also like the sci-fi feel to this - the futuristic world is nice so far.

Not gonna judge based on the first episode, but seems like it has potential.

they might do it later as flashbacks.

I'm looking forward to this, but the extreme censoring is a bit jarring.

Edgy Team leader (check)
Low Success chance (check)
Lots of people already died on an edgy failed mission. (check)
Dark colors but super bright red blood. (check)

10/10 would masterbate to.

Ohoo impressive 1st episode.

That huge bear was scary, how did Akari transform into that monster to turn the table around? It seems the wounds healed too. The author better explains this. We got some character development too, even if a little. Michelle is so hot damn. The gray haired girl was kind of cute

What I disliked, is that they went straight to the main goal. They could've made an arc or a mini arc while still in Earth. Welp, maybe they cut some parts in the manga though.

Shokichi said he was a "child born after the surgery." My guess is that Akari's father is somebody from the previous Bugs 2 expedition. After his body was modified he must've planted the seed on some lucky lady leaving the insect genetics behind as well.

The source material isn't very japanese either. It has more of a black lagoon vibe.. a lot of the cast are foreigners as well. Don't expect anything great, or even good out of this though, it's mindless entertainment. With the censoring it loses the one thing it had going for it.
