Huh, unexpected ending I guess? And not in a good way. Just felt very cheap and rushed, which is especially bad since they wasted to much time on boring stuff in the episodes before.

I did not shed any tears, not even close. Just couldn't really get into these characters. Just too much violence and unnecessary drama and stupidity. Overall I'm disapointed by this show, expected more focus on music as well. Oh well, at least I watched something popular again.

She was going to die without the surgery, The reason she didn't take the surgery before was because the chances were so low that she'd lose what little time she had left.

Kousei inspired her to take that chance, to risk what little she had left for the slim chance everything would work out.

I can't think of any other anime that's ever made me cry. And not just cry but cry twice immediately after calming down.

This isn't a perfect story, I think it meanders around a bit in the middle when it follows around some side characters who really only exist for their own sake.

But for it's ability to really make me feel the pain and loss in the ending I'd give it a 10/10.

Any good alternate endings? If yes then tell me.
Also why say things like, this part was bad and other stuff. The pacing was fine, the character development was good and yes some scenes were hard to watch (Emotionally!) , but that's how the writer wanted to show. I think it was a very good show and is the reason why it's successful. Many people just bash so many stupid things that just look good on reading but are actually made up crap. So yeah anyway, do tell me if there's an alternative ending, would love to read it.

Just finished this show and enjoyed it. Have several thoughts regarding everything I saw so I am just going to put everything down for the whole show. Even if nobody reads this, I feel like I have to get this out there, to remember what this show meant to me.

I see this show as kind of like a Shinkai clone, most particularly, The Place Promised in our Early Days stretched out over 22 episodes. the same feelings of melancholy, the sickness, competing loves, loss, beautiful art, the themes of music and skies as things that connect people and transcend time. I felt the same watching this as I did that, despite the fact that it was years ago when I first saw it.

The mental age of everyone in this show, both kids and adults, was so incredibly high, it was almost to the point of unbelievability. I'm willing to give some leeway to Kaori and Kousei, as hardship can really age a person and cause them to have thoughts like these. But no way Takeshi's sister of 13 years old thinks like a 40 year old reflecting back on her life as staring into the abyss of her own lack of honor then gets all tingly inside while standing next to Arima-sensei. Alot of people here also complain about the lack of character development for Watari and Tsubaki, but I think they got exactly the amount of character development they both needed. Watari was a foil in a sense for the trio to play off of, Suave but mature. Same for Tsubaki, bold and tomboyish, but also sensitive and caring "like a girl" in her own way. I personally loved the main three. It made me really glad that Kousei wasn't just some loner in school like every other anime character ever, just him and his piano. Despite their differing social statuses as well as extracurriculars, it was easy to see the chemistry the three friends had together, as if they were really a friend group who'd been through everything and known each other for years. For 14 year old students, I found them so incredibly mature, almost to the point of unbelievability, with incredibly nuanced views about love and life, and focused attitudes about futures. They also handled death and sadness with decorum I don't expect some adults to have dealt with in their lives ever. Even when they were little kids they're seen comforting each other and greeting hardship with a smile. Like holy hell these kids are precocious.

Despite what he and the people around him believe, Kousei really is a smooth talker. I have a soft spot for main lead characters who give you a reason to like them and a reason why others like them so much. He always knows what to say in a situation to cheer someone up, and is always a helping hand for those in need "friend A". To me, it was so obvious why Tsubaki loved him and wanted to be with him, and I think I would the same if I were in her shoes. He really gave us a reason to like him, truly for his caring and deep personality that is challenging but nurturing and sensitive.

I think this show deserves a 7 or an 8, and it really comes down to Kaori. For starters, I felt like Kaori was a poor main lead. While she serviced the ideas of the show much better, the humor and the funny parts of her personality were so forced, it felt like they were shoehorned in just to get us to like her and see her as a human. Perhaps this is an overly unpopular opinion, but I thought the show would have carried much more emotional weight had Tsubaki been in her place. I found her altogether a much more likable and fleshed out character, rather than simply a conduit to explore Kousei's emotions and the story about love and loss. Though it pains me to say it, she was a plot device through and through, and even she knew it and acknowledged it in the end. She became a part of Kousei's life for an instant, and at the end, he takes a bit of her with him, like a shounen protagonist at the end of his story arc. He'll get together with Tsubaki, hang out with Watari, and laugh and have fun, but it feel to me as if she was just a passing fad, that existed to help Kousei grow as a pianist and a person and get over his fears, rather than a girl he actually loved. I am not sure if this is coming across clearly, but that is how I personally feel about her. hang out for a bit, take some souvenirs and experiences and move on with life.

So I guess in the end, better her than Tsubaki as the passing fad in that case. I will say one thing though, and that is that this show made all the inner reflection and monologue watchable and at parts enjoyable. There were no major arguments between the friend group that distracted from the main story and created unnecessary drama, and each character had a purpose and backstory that was fleshed out in one way or another. Altogether a fine watch. Not blow-me-away levels of good, but definitely something nice and heartfelt for a Saturday or Sunday watch. 8/10

awesome show. i sometimes like to watch some drama and take a break from comedy so i decided to watch this on a whim. despite accidentally reading a few spoilers i still went on. i also pretended they were college students since i doubt middle schoolers can say awesome lines like them, ever.

i was actually hoping theyd have at least another duet before that happened cause you know, she did promise right? i also just realized, just what was her illness anyways?
anime/manga version of steam would be awesome - https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1625396

I can quote @Gov from first page and it would be a very good picture but @NoiceMeme adds that finishing touch, the fact that the show had to constantly tell me what's good and what's not good instead of USING MUSIC to convey emotion just showed the entire thing was nothing more than a premeditated tear jerker.
Still, if you fill in the blanks, this anime is unique and as everyone else said, tears were shed.

TL/DR. Premeditated tear-jerker.
Closer.

Reach Her! Beyond death!

Kousei knew, that Kaori had no chance, I don't know what caused her to die during the surgery, but Kousei knew that she dies the moment his vision of her disappears into the gust of cherry blossoms leaves. This time, the performance he's playing is a goodbye gift for Kaori, someone he loves dearly. Beautiful, sad feelings (T^T) FEEEELSSS!!!

The letter is the final backstory of Kaori.
So it turns out that she's a violinist so that one day she could play with Kousei as her accompanist. Though that only happened once, it will never be forgotten! She spent the remaining time of her life well, impacting the lives of the people who heard her and especially guiding Kousei forward. What pains me the most from her letter is the fact that she had always loved Kousei from way back! I am so glad that as I expected, her romantic love for Watari was all a lie THAT IS THE LIE IN APRIL!!! But it is still painful to not being able to see both Kousei and Kaori directly confessing their love to each other. But at the same time, I'm happy that at least they did confess indirectly.

Kaori loves Kousei but Tsubaki is there ----- Kousei love Kaori but Watari is there

Miracle IMO:
I think the miracle here is that the characters (especially Kousei and Kaori) are able to spend their time together, creating memorable memories for almost a year and everyone involved gets to be more matured and thus able to move forward into the future, with their own personal fond memories in their heart that they'll never forget...

Beautiful...

What a bittersweet ending.
You'd think you'd be more honest in the face of death so you could spend more time with the one you grew up to admire and love. Guess I'll never understand the meaning of leaving a letter behind other than the added drama.

Finally decided to watch this and binged it in two days. I knew from the beginning she's gonna die since friends spoiled it to me almost five years ago, but even then I don't think it would've hit me that hard; I feel like they tried to cover too much in the final episode. It was a nice journey though with very likeable characters, 7/10.
I just wish Japan would drop this "childhood friend girl falls for childhood friend boy". As a girl who has been best friends with a guy since kindergarden it's just weird to see the "he's like a brother" turn into "I love him" lol.

That glassy sky background when Arima is playing remind me of Unravel. Would be great to see him play Unravel though, lol. Firstly If not by the name of Arima, this show wouldn't catch my eye. And then I take a look so his full name is Arima Kousei and coincidentally in TG there's a man called Arima Kisho. So that's how I end up here at the end of the series.

Yeah all is as I expected Kaori was onto Arima from the start but damn... she's onto him from when she's 5. She's even go as far as planned an indirect picture with Arima, haha lol that liar. And wow she used to wear a glasses

*sigh, in the end Kaori couldn't perform for the last time with Arima.

And finally she said the word. She realized she couldn't face him when she said that so she said it this way before her death. I think.

That ending should have been about Arima, Kaori, Tsubaki , and Watari or at least Arima and Kaori not just Kaori only. That's just feels like she is the only main character for the series. Not that I know what's best, but it's just not suitable for my view.

BTW who won the Easter Japanese Competition?

Well it's been a fun ride, glad I finished it in April.

Just finished this a few minutes ago, so I'm writing this so I have fresh feelings. and... Wow. That really tore me up with the ending. I don't think any other show or movie has ever come close to how emotional I feel right now. The end of Elfen Lied also made me emotional, but this is on another level. I'm actually tearing up right now, because of what happened, which has never happened to me because of a movie or a TV show in my life, from what I can remember. I just feel sad about the show. I know that not everything is meant to have a happy ending, but I really wish this could have. I was really wanting to watch a show that was a nice, feel-good romance, but this gave me so much more, and I don't know whether I like it. It made me feel so sad it's hard to enjoy the show, because I can't have a happy feeling when I watch it. I loved every moment up till this episode, and even when she got ill, I stupidly assumed it'd all be fine. I mean, shes one of the main characters of an anime, they wouldn't do anything bad, right? And then they cut me down, and ripped my feelings from my chest. I felt like a happy ending was so close, and it was crushed in front of my eyes. I know that makes it good storytelling, but it hurts to watch. So overall, I loved the show, and thought it was beautiful, but now it just hurts me emotionally, because of this episode, and it's hard to enjoy because of that. It's amazingly written and acted, a definite high scorer, but I don't find it enjoyable, at least right now.

I'm glad I watched this anime. The artwork and the music was beautiful! I'm so sad that Kousei never got to tell Kaori how he really feels but I sense that Kaori already knew his feelings! I really hope Kousei will be okay and continue the piano after Kaori helped him so much with it. After I finished the anime I bought volume one of the manga, I'm super excited to read it!

The usual: episode discussion, then my final thoughts on Your Lie in April.

I liked the idea that his performance in this competition was the culmination of everyone he knew helping him in some manner. Does this count as Kaori performing with Kousei one last time? I'll assume it does count because I'm a sucker like that. I knew he would end his performance crying, but I didn't even begin to think that this is why he would start crying. The two of them performing was beautiful and powerful. Kousei begging Kaori not to leave him was pretty sad. The "open to interpretation" gap between the competition and the events afterward was a little jarring, but I'll forgive it because I liked how it was used as an artistic message. I never would have thought that Kaori was at the same performance as Emi when Kousei first began playing. I like Kaori with glasses more. Just saying, it is a better look. So she knew the entire time that she didn't have much life left in her? That changes how I interpret the beginning of the show quite a bit. Kaori's message was perfect. The conversation between Kaori and Kousei at the end was nice. Looks like in the end, they both were able to reach one another.

Now let's get into what I think of the show in its entirety. First, I would like to state that I personally found this show to be pretty overrated. Given its incredibly high score on MAL, with 39.6% of people (at the time of me typing this) giving it a perfect score, I was expecting something a bit better. I've been let down in the past by MAL scores from stuff like Your Name., but I still held out hope that I would be able to see what made this show warrant so many people describing it as flawless. And for the life of me, I don't know. Is it just that the MAL userbase loves shows that end with an emotional impact like this? That's my best guess because this show has way too many flaws to be considered a masterpiece. I know it sounds like I hated this show, and I actually didn't. It was enjoyable for what it was. But I'll stop there and move on. What did I like about Your Lie in April? Quite a bit. The OST was awesome and was by far the best part of the entire show. Performances sounded great and voice-acting (I'm a sub asshole) was quite competent. My biggest gripe is that we never actually got to hear a full performance. Someone is always talking over the music playing, and I found that a bit annoying. Characters were fine, with Kousei being the obvious stand out because he was given the most development. The rest of the characters served a purpose and were never annoying, but they weren't by any means exceptional. Kaori was the only other character that didn't fit a specific character archetype yet she still wasn't very interesting. The art style was very good for what it was. Piano CG was pretty disgusting and I wasn't the big fan of the chibi art style (or whatever you want to call it), but in every other regard, it was quite exceptional. The story was weirdly paced and I have a few questions here and there (did Kousei ever get his ability to hear music back, stuff like that), but I seriously enjoyed how nicely everything concluded so I'll give it a higher mark. I guess my biggest gripe with this show was the first 12 episodes. I understand that it is important to establish how troubling his inability to hear music is, but they personally spent far too much time on this singular issue, and it always played out the exact same way. It just got aggravating, not even dramatic. I don't want to see someone sit on a stage and have a mental breakdown for the tenth time. It isn't very entertaining. That's the short version of my thoughts on Your Lie in April. It was a good show, but I personally didn't think it was as amazing as everyone made it out to be. I give it a high 7/10.

Hm! That last episode was really good. I loved seeing Kousei and Kaori play again, even if it was Kaori in spirit. The music playing is def my favorite part of the series. I did feel the first half was much stronger than the second half, though.

I'm particularly intrigued by the cats in this anime. I'm going to draw conclusions there were three cats. The green eyed one symbolized his mother (suffering). The blue eyed symbolized Kaori and looked like Chelsea (hope). I thought there was a strange change in animation for the other blue eyed cat they meet, but realized it was meant to be a separate cat altogether, as a vehicle for Kaori's death and misfortune. I honestly wished they picked another eye color for the cat to make it seem less jarring. The distinctive bat-earred appearance of the first two should have also showed up in the third one, in my opinion.

I think this anime was a really good watch! I wasn't too big into the melodrama and I felt the death flags shouldn't have showed up until much later to give the viewer more impact of Kaori's death, but I understand why people like it so much. The last episode was the only one that hit my feelings, besides Kousei's original struggle with his mom, so I wasn't moved much throughout the entirety of the episodes.

I'm not sure if this deserves to be so highly rated, considering other anime has left a much bigger impact on me, but it had it's moments. I do appreciate Kousei and Kaori didn't kiss and that their love was through words and feelings. I'd like to think Kaori was being selfless in that aspect, realizing she was dying, and didn't want to confuse Kousei more than she already had with her lie.

6/10

It’s been more than five years since this episode aired, but it’s still as spectacular as it was back then. Arima’s final performance, envisioning Kaori right there playing beside him as our hope that Kaori’s surgery will go well fizzled away. The latter half of the episode took on a very depressing, mournful, yet inspiring feel at the same time. Kaori’s letter to Arima and how she first found out about her terminal illness, How she met Arima, and how her life would change after that. One simple lie that brought about a lot of sadness, despair, anger, yet allowed Arima and Kaori to be together. As Kimi No Uso played, our tears couldn’t stop, as we reminisced about the long journey that they and we have been through. Truly a spectacular ending to one of the best anime’s out there.

It was a decent anime, nothing spectacular but decent enough to have a rating of 8/10. I think the rating is a bit too high at the moment but I expect nothing less from MAL's rating, plenty of other animes are overrated out of proportions here. Not saying that this anime is bad though, is just the rating that is a bit too high.

The ending of this anime was sad and pretty damn good at the same time, so good that I shed a couple of manly tears. This anime had a good beginning, then it got a bit slow in the middle but it was still decent enough to get a 8/10 from me.

I full-on cried at that ending. I wish she could've lived but it can't always be a happy ending I guess. Her letter to Kousei was so sweet! I was also wondering why they called it "Your lie in April" when I first started watching it but now we know ❤❤❤. Also, that scene when they played together one last time was so heart-wrenching😭.

It was a wonderful show and, as ever, these stories are better when everyone is basically decent. Even his rivals got some development and they realised they needed each other. Strangely, the most emotional thing, for me, was when they were worried about him before his performance.

The sadness of Kaori's death is partly reduced by the positive impact she had on Arima's life and the fact that she played a huge part in making him the person that he is obviously now going to become. That and the fact that Tsubaki will always support him from now on. Kaori fixed the damage that his mother's relationship had and her impact in that short time will help him for the rest of his life. It is terribly sad but it is also incredibly inspiring.

And, sure, they are a few plot holes in there and some of it might have been a bit tighter, but all the curmudgeons out there who are splitting hairs, i think the overall feeling of the tale is meant to be more important. Pedants who want to scrutinise the plot are probably not the right demographic for this kind of story in any case. There are plenty of time travel stories for them to pick at the plot during.

I've seen a few long posts about how spoon fed we were and how often we were bashed on the head with flashbacks, which i partly agree with. But we still don't know whether Kaori knew how much Arima loved her or whether Watari knew how much Kaori loved Arima. There are hints but it isn't conclusive. Was Kaori really at his recital? In the manga, there is a suggestion that maybe Tsubaki saw her for a moment but in the anime, we don't know if it is part of his imagination or not. And we will never know whether Tsubaki's 'encouragement' at the end means they will be together or not. I hope so, as i think that is the only way they will both survive such a horrible event.

I've seen arguments about who is the best for Kousei, and I have to say that it is Tsubaki, only because Kaori knew she had a limited time and Tsubaki loved him for real all that time. Otherwise, who knows what would happen if Kaori survived? And Kaori really did tell more than one lie, she let people think she was healthy and, even though she didn't technically lie, that was the biggest lie of all. How would things have turned out if they'd all known the truth from the start? Tsubaki is the only person that can be with him after this. And i believe that she told the lie about Watari because she believed it wouldn't hurt him so much. He suspected it anyway, i think, but, in the end, her death did hurt him, how could it not? It makes everything even sadder. I think Watari is a really underestimated character in this tale, he knows that Kousei loves Kaori but he goes with it anyway. Maybe because he is playboy, but i think it is because he loves Kousei and he realises how serious the situation is so he isn't going to get possessive in such a difficult situation. At the end of the anime, he is seen being friendly to Kosei and then staring at his phone, he kept a lot in for his friends, i think.

The anime improved on the manga for me.It suggests that Kaori knew how Kousei felt but she didn't want to break things anymore because she knew he still had a whole life to live. She loved him so much that she couldn't tell him. Excellent.

... and they never established what illness Kaori had. This is incredible.

And so it ends... and as expected, I didn't feel anything. Truth be told, Kousei's performance was fantastic but the rest of the episode was too... cliche/standard/predictable for my taste.

Gotta be honest, at first I had some good expectations about this anime. Especially considering the amount of love and praise most of the community has for it but man, this was a quite terrible show in the end. Mostly due to the excessive comedy regarding the physical abuse towards MC, the forced melodrama (love triangle and Tsubaki's one-sided love) and some really annoying characters (Tsubaki once again, Takeshi and to certain extent, Kaori as well)

The comedy was awfully forced and misplaced throughout the whole series. How am I supposed to "digest" the impact of seeing a character having a terminal disease if you make jumps to comedy scenes in the same episode within seconds? Probably, my biggest gripe with the show.

On the other hand, I think Kousei's trauma about his mother was handled terribly and the fact that they tried to justify Saki's abusive methods made me feel disgusted. Seriously, I can't believe that after all the beatings and psychological abuse, the anime still managed to portray her as a loving mother who did what she could to raise his son into a proper (and traumatized) young man. Not to mention that Kousei never acknowledging his mother's toxic behaviour makes me wonder if he really will be OK in the long term.

Now, regarding Kaori, I never liked her, being honest. Since the beginning I suspected she was acting this carefree due to her already knowing she hadn't much time left. Still, I found her attitude towards Kousei to be rather pushy and negatively intense since she basically forced him to go to that piano contest in Ep. 1, forced him again to be her companion and technically forced him to swallow his problems because "musicians always have it rough". All this despite the clear discomfort the guy showed every time and despite the possible consequences that it would cause the fact of forcing someone to affront their fears when they are not ready.
And let's better not talk about her abusive behaviour because man, in the end she's not really better than Saki. Always telling Kousei to play piano and "attacking" him in case he "slacks off". I'm sorry but the fact that you're dying doesn't give you the right to treat others as if they were about to die too. Forcing them into doing things they are not ready for yet. In the end, the idea of Kousei not having his trauma eating him alive due to Kaori's careless actions was just because of this being a shounen story.

Oh dear, this is taking too much writing so I will be concise with the rest of points I didn't like about the series:
- For 14 years old teenagers, the monologues were too pretentious to be taken seriously.
- As mentioned before, the love triangle and Tsubaki's one-sided love storylines were completely lame and uninteresting.
- Takeshi's character and arc were too "shounen-ish", even for this kind of series.

Overall, this wasn't a good series in the slightest. The story was simple but had potential yet it was ruined by forced comedy and boring side plots. The only good points I can think of would be the decent production values, the first OP and some interesting characters such as Emi and that brat of Nagi

2/10 - Of the worst handles of drama I have seen and considering the good reviews, good scores and overall good reception, one of my biggest disappointments when it comes to "popular" series.

Reading this review of yours, it's clear that you didn't understand the series and what it's trying to do almost at all which is really unfortunate. What you didn't like about Kaori is dumb I guess? For the simple fact that everything she did and being so pushy is a good thing , all of us need a friend like her IRL they will do miracles when you are down (I have one exactly like her and I've been through the same stuff Kosei has been and she helped a lot and got me out of that state). I guess you've never experience the same stuff Kosei struggled with and it's understandable but only people that relate and have been through the same problems as these characters can really understand and appreciate this series to it's fullest. (it doesn't have a high rating for nothing)About Kaori's illness is pretty easy to figure out if you are into medical stuff, if not then it would be pretty easy to do a google or youtube search going into detail. Even if they would have told you the illness 90% of the people still wouldn't have known what it is so you would still end up googling it.

Yeah, I don't exactly know what "stuff" have you experienced because Kousei has a lot of problems. Would you care to elaborate? Was it the pressure of living to your mother's expectations, physical and mental abuse experiences (I honestly hope not), the loneliness of being a prodigy, the fact of having a close person struggling with a desease or what? Of course, feel free to refrain from answering if it's something really personal.

And how is "pushing my classmate/love interest into doing something he clearly shows discomfort of doing" a good thing? Depending on the approach, doing it can cause a different result but Kaori's way would have backfired if the story were more realistic. In this regard, I liked Emi's way a bit more. Trying to reach Kousei with her music and helping him return to his old self (the joyful one before the beatings) in a more gentle way. Personal opinion but he didn't need Kaori's intense approach but Emi's more subtle and caring one. Even though it would take more time.

And also, there's a limit for what "friends" can do. Moral support is good but what Kousei needed was to fully understand what was happening into his mind, into his psyche. That's the reason for why therapists and psychologists exist. The guy should have visited one since the beginning but for some reason, it seems that seeking professional help is taboo for these characters.

Again, I don't know what "stuff" are you exactly referring to so I can't give you a proper answer. But just to let you know, my life hasn't been all suns and rainbows so in a sense, I can relate to some of Kousei's issues. Though truth be told, it's nonsense to say that only people who had had problems "can really understand and appreciate this series to it's fullest". If a story is well handled and developed, anyone could appreciate any work of fiction.

By the way, MAL ratings/scores are a joke. Don't pay much attention to them.

I'm not into medical stuff and googling Kaori's symptoms would have given me several possibilities, nothing solid. It's not the same as having the exact name. That way, I would know what to look for.

During the series there were a few talks between the doctor and Kaori's parents so why not just mention her illness and that's it? They didn't even explain what the surgery would "fix" to give her a few more time. For me that was a huge flaw, I can't feel totally invested in a character if the writers keep her condition in such unnecessarily secretive way.
At first I though it wasn't established for mystery purposes but saying nothing at all about what was the cause of her death, killed any potential anticipation.

Heartbroken.

I'll start off with an overview. It was beautiful. It had its problems, but I believed overall it was very beautiful. It's not a masterpiece, but it was amazing.

I had a bad feeling when that image of Kaori appeared in Kousei's "vision". And I was right. It was beautiful to see her as her best self, brightly shining. But it was also in that moment that she left. It went from daylight to the night, and when the night came slowly she disappeared, she faded away from his sight. At the peak of his performance, she died. I initially didn't catch on to this, until we saw Kousei meeting Kaori's parents at the graveyard. And then it made sense why he was crying as he ended his performance. His connection with her was so deep that in a way he knew she wasn't going to be there by the end of his performance, and thus "sayonara".

So we've seen a part of Kaori's backstory early on, ever since Emi's arc. She was a really cute little kid. She first saw Kousei when she was 5, and it changed her life. She gave up piano, took up the violin because she wanted to one day play with him. She wound up in the same school as him, but couldn't bring herself to approach him. It felt like there was no space for her in his life with Watari and Tsubaki there. Kaori seems so different with glasses and twin-tails.

But as she discovered she was nearing the end of her life, she decided not to hold back anymore. And so we came to the lie she told in April: that she liked Watari, and not Kousei. If she had said she liked Kousei directly, Tsubaki would've gone on the defensive immediately. But instead, through the lie she told, Kousei came into her life and they changed each other's lives forever. She'll continue to live on, in the memories and hearts of so many people who saw her beautiful performances. But most importantly, he'll live on in Kousei's heart forever. He'll never forget her, ever.

And at the end, she finally said "I love you".

The love that could never fully blossom.

So she's loved Kousei all this time, and it was probably one of the driving forces in her life.

Kousei has matured now. He can live through this, and he can shine brighter. The light she's brought, he'll keep lit and make even brighter. And Kousei is never alone. He has so many people around him who care about him, not in the least Tsubaki. But he won't ever ever forget Kaori. It's sad that Kousei never got the chance to tell Kaori his true feelings unambiguously. He did sort of confess on that night she called him and he said he wanted to see her, but he never did outright say to her that he liked her, or that he loved her. That was sad, but it couldn't be helped. But the things they did for each other, the presence in each others' lives, and the music they played definitely conveyed that.

Kaori's greatest treasure was a childhood picture of her where Kousei just happened to be walking past and turned his head towards her? That's so cute. Kousei will never throw it away. It'll always stay on his piano, forever and ever where he can see it.

Beautiful. It has become one of my favourites. Maybe this is an 8, and I still struggle to find the best score for this. But I feel like its beauty and in particular the story of Kousei and Kaori brought it up to 9, and so that's what I'm giving.

Goodbye, Kaori..

P.S. I initially thought the lie was about her condition or her dying, but that made no sense since she mentioned none of these when they first met. I guess the only thing that could've been a lie at that time was her liking Watari.

Could've been great but they decided to drop this low with a smothering of tsundere. How you going to wait until you're dead say all this stuff. She should've been on 'Go' from the day in park. Dude never got wet one time and basically built a harem.

I just finished watching this and wow. Just wow. I was gradually watching this throughout the month of April and I left the final few episodes for today.

It's been awhile since I cried watching something: movies, anime, etc. This one hit and it hit hard. I was able to keep it together until Kousei got to the section of the letter where Kaori said she loved him. That part broke me.

Overall, a beautiful show that hits the emotions with a few light hearted moments for comedic relief. The music picked blended wonderfully as well. 10/10

yeh that was a good anime, i enjoyed watching it a lot could 100% see why people love this anime so much its a really good SOL, romance and musical (something super rare nowadays) anime.
Story's very good, seeing Kousei develop so much both as a human overcoming the horrendous child hood he had with his mother and then continuing on the positive side thanks to Kaori was so interesting to watch. Many of my questions and more were indeed answered at the last episode and although the ending is very mixed between happiness and sadness i'd say i'm very content with the ending.
Anime is able to keep its SOL aspects with the comedy and funny moments to a reasonable degree and the Romance is good when you know who likes who.
Now from a personal perspective, with the little music knowledge i was able to scrap at and stay awake for in year 10-11, the music was very pleasing to the ears and definitely a 10/10 for this show. Usually not one for classical music but i found no problems with listening to it. Eh although i went into this anime with a sour taste for music as a subject (majors, minors, chord progression etc,) and a even bigger case of ptsd having to perform in front of people, this anime did lighten my view a bit, not making me want to instantly start playing again but definitely changed my view for the better :)
a few complaints would be the love triangle in this anime was really hard to keep track of and irritating at some points and side characters (especially Emi which i'm super sad about) got little to no character development at all.
overall 7/10 anime, wished i watched it when it released!

This series was a disappointment. It had terrible comedic timing, monologues that were dragged out too much, dialogues and metaphors which felt very pretentious, too much forced/badly-handled melodrama for my tastes, not a very likable cast of characters and some serious issues with how they handled abuse. The characters cried too much from the beginning when we've hardly gotten to know them and the show expects me to care about them and their forced drama. And they really shouldn't have added the whole love triangle part.

Regarding this episode, though Kousei's performance was absolutely beautiful and I loved how Kaori appeared beside him to fulfill the promise of playing together one last time, it was completely ruined by the whole phenomenon of light bursting out of her chest or whatever before disappearing. It would've been far better and much more impactful to have let her fade gently or even to cut to her surgery room. But then again, that is the problem with this show. Everything has to be over-the-top dramatic, nothing is allowed to speak for itself, the music, the characters' struggles, their feelings, nothing. Though, the letter scene was quite emotional and done very well.

For the characters, didn't like Kaori at all, especially with her violent, abusive behaviour used for comedic effect. Same goes for Tsubaki, but I felt her interactions with Kousei to be more genuine, but her behaviour in the second half made me really dislike her. I liked Kousei and really felt for him. The rivals, Nagi and Kasiwagi were likable too. But Watari was the least developed one, I mean, why is he even listed as a main character, he hardly had any real use in the story, which is quite a shame. Regarding Kaori's character, this quoted post explains my further problems
Reikuo said:
It was clear what they was going to do with the character of Kaori. Its bittersweet and ethereal which is the point in a medium like anime but the just layed it on too thick each time she was on screen. I felt she spoke to Arima in a way that was just a bit too much out there. As if she knew she was fixing him step by step and setting up elaborate scenarios to grow him as a person in.

She really became this sightseer into the future rather then a girl going through such a terrible experience. I wont go as far as to say shes a bad character but I would have like to have seen her receive more from Arima as a person rather then just being happy everytime he took a step forward. She just seemed far more like a tool for Arima's development then an honest character.

All in all, the production values were fantastic. The music was amazing and moving throughout. But quite a few problems make this show overall an average one.
