For me, Gin from Bleach up until his anti-hero revelation. That evil grin of his was just so damn awesome! Same goes for Hisoka from HxH, also has that evil grin and presence about him!

Also Johan and Griffith are good shouts.

I won't call him the best villain ever, but Makshima Shougo from Psycho-Pass really qualifies for this (for me). His thought process, his actions, his plans and even
were all brilliant.

I dislike the word hero as much as I dislike the word villain. Characters in real life aren't tainted by that sort of black and white worldview, nobody is a red eyed monster who lurks in the dark and if they are they have GOOD solid reasons for turning into one. Similarly nobody is so altruistic as to disregard their own self interest UNLESS they have good reasons for doing so, this is all part of what people like to call character development.

I think this thread is full of examples of typical villains an example is Zolf J Kimblee for fma, he simply wants to blow things up - that's the depth of his character it starts there and ends there and so he's been given a rapist face to match and a creepy voice to boot. When you listen to/see/witness a character like Kimblee you instantly know that they've got something evil up their sleeve.

Good Villains are thus:

Light Yagami - (if you can call him a villain)

Oscar Von Reuentahl/ Reinhard (again if you can call them villains)

Zechs Marquise/Milliardo Peacecraft (Gundam Wing) (if you can call him a villain)

The Laughing man (Ghost in the Shell) - if you can call him a villain

Vicious from Bebop - although he does have a rape face at least his motives are clear and his back-story with Spike comes together so beautifully.

Keith Anyan - Terra E (motives are completely rational)

Notice how many of these names have a disclaimer at the end - In a well written story there are no archetypal heroes and villains there are simply people who circumstances have led into different roles. I'm sure I can add to this list.

Of course there are shows like Gurren Lagaan that RELY on stereotypes to tell their story and I can find it within me to forgive them for resorting to cartoon violence because of their genre.

BUT REMEMBER THE RULE - RAPE-FACE = BAD WRITING

You make a good point, but also remember. Not knowing what he's upto doesn't necessarily make him a brilliant villain. There can be a person who can be a brilliant villain even if it's oh-so-obvious that he is upto something evil. I call dibs on Madara on this one. For me, he's one of the best villains there is. You always know he is upto something evil, but it's the way he does it that makes him awesome. And then there's Light. His intentions are good, but you can't help but think his methods are not as pure as he thinks they are. But he still makes for a brilliant villain.

As for Kimblee, he can be viewed as a villain in one view, but from another view, he can be viewed as a guy who simply wants to enjoy something (in his case, blowing things up) or a guy who simply wants to see what happens to the world (as is his reasoning for siding with the homonculus). Then again, he can also be viewed as a hero for what he did

In the end, this thread is yet another one of those opinions threads, so we should really be expecting stereotypical answers. Also, Anti-Spiral from TTGL can be called a non-stereotypical villain as well.

Yes my Kimblee example wasn't the best one possible they actually gave him a decent role in Brotherhood - in the first series he was much more 2 dimensional. In Brotherhood he actually speaks a few lines about morality =O *bowled over*

As for the anti-spiral, hmm I don't really know I think the concept itself is pretty black and white - good - evil - spiral- anti-spiral etc. But I'm not including TTGL or any other show of that sort in my critique because they specifically rely on cliches to plow onward.

I agree with Light - I mentioned Light in my post! -

As for people like Madara, I think they can make good villains but to a certain extent if we eventually find out what they're doing and why they did it then that's fine - if we don't then they're just another unexplained scary shadow.

If I can add in villains from things other than anime...

Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2 is my favorite villain, at least until the last couple of missions.

Jack "So where is your husband now?"
Girl "Well.. He's Dead"
Jack "Oh God, I'm sorry. I didn't know. Well at least now you have something in common" *shoots girl in head*

Cut to next audio log.

Jack "HAHA DID YOU SEE HER BRAINS THEY WERE ALL LIKE *loud fart noise*

When taken all together, who would you say is overall the most memorable and well portrayed villain in an anime for your personal reasons? I would say prior to Kishimito butchering him, Orochimaru from Naruto was one of the most memorable ones I can think of simply because of the flamboyant portrayal he was given, from his outlandish tongue to gender swapping abilities, he had an unforgettable theme typically accompanying him. If only Kishimito didn't blow it.

But yeah, what comes to your mind first and foremost?

Friend, 20th century boys

For starters just look at him

he has the brains to brainwash hundreds to thousands of followers without revealing his identity. He has the ability to minduck the protagonists, knows what they will do in and out and in the future, and is a genius all around who gets what he wants when he wants it. all while staying calm and cool, never raising his voice or losing his calm demeanor.

And thats just the basic description of him, for spoiler reasons i cant mention all that he accomplishes. He is the definition of evil

Griffith(Berserk): He has a goal and does what it takes to achieve it.
Blackbeard(One Piece):He and Luffy have similar ideals when it comes to believing in your dreams. He just has a different way of achieving it.
Chrollo Lucifer(HunterxHunter): He truly cares about his comrades.
Ladd Russo(Baccano): Not sure if hes necessarily a villain but hes just an easy character to like.
Gilgamesh(F/Z):No explanation needed
The Admirals(One Piece):All of them(even Akainu) have some redeeming qualities about them.

Orochimaru played a pretty decent villain.

Sugou(?) from Sword Art Online.

Even though some people hate the guy, Kariya from Bleach was awesome.
