It's definitely confirming there are two different versions of Lain. I wonder how that's going to play out? And who are those guys with the goggles watching her?

Well, soon enough I think we'll get to see what this Psyche thing will do. Maybe we'll get some more answers soon. This episode was interesting, but not much happened. Feel like it's getting things set up for some more craziness! ★ 3/5

This show is genius. It knows the exact ammount of weirdness it has to show to keep you interested, but it's never over the top.

Also feeling I'm gonna have to rewatch this at least once to understand it.

We finally get to see what those red dots were in the car. Who the hell are those guys? My first thought was that they were zaku with the red eyes! lol As mentioned several times, I, too, am anxious to see this "wild" Lain that everyone keeps talking about. The obvious question is if whether or not they are the same person. I am thinking not, but we'll find out next episode it seems. Can't wait.

Good episode. It cleared up a few misconceptions for me.
- I now think that instead of the things in the shadows being blood, they are probably representative of the wired world because they look similar to the wired world that we've seen so far.
- I think its confirmed that Lain can travel through the wired and see into peoples emails, tv's, and navis. One reason of this is because in the opening we see her looking at people through their technological devices. Another reason is because it showed her entering to the navi and hearing people's private conversations.
- I now know the the school girl with the long hair isn't Lain's sister as I previously thought.
-I'm starting to think that in the cyberia bar, or maybe anywhere, people can come alive as a different person through the wired. That could be what Lain does at night on her navi. Maybe she forgets what she does as that other person and only knows what is going on when she is that other person. That's why she was confused when the kids were talking about her "wild side".
- Those people outside her house are probably FBI people who are looking into Lain to figure out whether she's a threat or not. I find it kind of funny how she just runs in that silly manner every time she sees one of those guys.
- On a side note, that "present day... present time!" voice reminds me of Hichigo every time its played. It sounds just like his voice.
- Also, I'm liking the opening. The ending is kind of good too.

This. Plus I'm too lazy to type everything. lol

I'm interested in seeing Lain's other side. Wild Lain.

Her dad is kind of a jerk but maybe there's also more to him than what we're actually seeing. He's pretty shady himself.

As far as I've read this thread I seem to be the only one who doesn't quite like this series. It's confusing me like what the hell is that Wired everyone is talking about and seriously what's wrong with Lain's parents? They are kind of cold or something like that. Also the artstyle isn't exactly my fav :/ Only reason why I'll keep watching this is because TheAnimeMan said it's amazing anime. Right now 6/10

The Matrix was already in production when Lain came out, but it's fair to say that some of the same ideas exist.

Actually, you can see similar ideas in a lot of anime and storytelling from around that fin de siecle era. (I'd list more, but some of those are spoilers.) Very similar trends in a lot of complex stories dealing with the nature of reality, the "limitless" understanding of cyberspace and its potential.

It's hard to see as much now with the distance, but when "the net" was still something you plugged into and was entered through windows (your desktop computer) rather than omnipresent in the world, the effect of the net *on* the world was a subject of deep narrative exploration.

So with those words were the black guys supposed to control the sister but couldn't cause she hasn't been on the wired?

really creepy how everyone acted after the suicide, i'm getting the vibes she's been too much into the wired and she can't even remember a thing, everyone knows about her but herself.

I'm hooked, super puzzled, but hooked.

Finally we see have some more info. I don't understand everything obviously but want to write some things down. Lain finds this Wired as a place for information but also for extortion, secrets, deception, etc. Lain has an alter ego in the Wired that is opposite from her and others know about her. She also seems to be "high rank" in the Wired. Both of her parents have something odd with them. The mom doesn't like technology and also acts coldly toward Lain. Her dad acts suspicious when Lain shows him the Psyche. I thought that Lain's sister didn't like her from the last episode but we don't see any hostility right now. The men in the car are of course of interest.

I like that it's finally moving along. Also, check out those middle school thugs in the club haha

This episode starts where the last one ends, she's in the police station after the events with the crazy guy shooting himself.

When she gets home the house is empty, lain goes to sleep and in the morning her mother is back and acting indifferent to Lain. Later on on this episode we see Lain asking her dad about the psyche chip she got from her locker in school, the dad act really strange and deny knowing something about it. We also see her sister (Mika) freaking out about the 2 guys (Karl and Lin Sui-Xi) outside her house and also finding strange how Lain is acting at the end of the chapter. Her sister is the only one acting normal in the house, lain's parents are probably getting controlled or something.

Also this episode we see how someone is trying to communicate with lain from the wire for some reason, someone is trying to tell her that she's not alone (This voice will be relevant in future episodes).

Nothing much this episode, but there is something we should not ignore. In the middle of the episode they show us some conversations happening in the wired, they are 2 of them really relevant to the series.

The first one

You heard about that kid pulling a stupid stunt on Accela, right?
Looks like the black market supplier is freaking out.
You can't find it anywhere now.
Rumor has it that the Psyche chip is mass-produced in factories in Taiwan.
Rumor also says that it was designed by a group called the Knights.
But I'm not sure if these "Knights" even exist.
In the Wired, there are a lot of urban legends like that.

The second one

Dying feels so good!
I feel accelerated...
What the...? There's someone in my room!
It's a little person like a kid in a red and green striped shirt!
I can't move in my bed! It's standing by my door, watching me!
Help me!

Putting these two things together, it can be deduced that Lain is like a "manager" of a chat (community maybe) very turbid

How is it that nobody came up with it?. Although I guess in 98 there were no group chats ... so I'm exaggerating.

.. could also be a hacker, or have the ability / power to read other messages.
Although I'm still not sure how much reality is and what is supernatural in the Anime

Great episode!! I feel that Lain is having two personalities. The one from the World and the one from the "real" world. In fact, in one of the cutscenes. Lain went home all alone, without her family or his sister. It's like it's been abandoned for years. Once she sleeps, she goes back to the "original" world. Which made me think that the world where her family is there, is just an illusion.

It's kinda fucked up about the mafia being able to stalk you whenever you go no questions ask.

I dunno why, but this series keep catching me.
All the unknowns that until now it is leaving, and the strange events that are happening.
Apparently Lain's parents have a rather strange attitude, especially the father, since the mother is quite distant and cold.
Something is being planned with Lain...
And the sister apparently does not understand anything of what happens.
The truth was very curious the final scene between Lain and his sister...
And what with those men? They're not really there?
Savage Lain...?
I'm just like the sister, I don't know very much what is happening. lol

What ineterested me the most this episode was when we heard the girl's voice saying that there was a small person in a striped shirt in her room just standing by the door. She was afraid to move from her bed.

Who the Hell was this kid? It makes me think that the wired is projecting people (or fake people maybe) into the real world. Maybe that's what Wild Lain is...a fake version of her created by the wired and projected into the real world?

She's getting stalked, and getting weird shit in the mail, and she seems to have schizophrenia? Autism? Split personality? I don't even know anymore. And the house was completely empty for a long time, what the hell happened there? Then she just went to bed thinking it was a dream and then was late for school? And she has the creepiest mother in history. ;w; Am I just too thick to comprehend this anime that everyone has been praising so much?

Those voices in the Wired were trying to convince Lain to just go ahead and fully connect to the system but I didn't expect it to have a bigger hold on her than I thought already. Nearly everyone's met the wild side of Lain except for Lain herself so I think that she's been doing some freaky deep-diving with her Navi without even realizing it. I also think that her parents know what's up with all those men-in-black stalking their residence since her dad just stayed silent when he saw the immersion-enhancing Psyche Chip she had even though someone like him would definitely know what it is.

It's interesting that those kids in Cyberia are so in the know about stuff related to the Wired including what could have been black market items. It's like how the current generation's more tech-savvy than most adults since they were born surrounded by technology nowadays.

I don't really know what went on at the end but it looks like her sister's seeing the more expressive Lain within the Wired with her very eyes. This is probably a sign that the virtual world's seeping into reality, hm.

Not gonna lie, I'm actually rather interested in meeting this wild Lain (probably the one with the red top and long earrings that appears in the OP inside the TV screens) everyone is talking about. I'm also kinda glad to see passive Lain isn't as passive as to let herself be taken advantage from a pathetic "fucker" wannabe kid.

So I was right. The more expressive Lain that went to the club the other night is the same introverted one we know since Ep. 1. She ingresses (unconsciously?) into the Wired and the persona/avatar/alter ego she becomes there, is a more assertive and maybe more promiscuous version of herself.
It also seems she has been interacting with her Navi a lot lately and probably due to that, she now can't fully recognize what's real and what's virtual. And as a final result, she goes clubbing (and maybe does other things) thinking she's still connected to the Wired.

I also found the last scene at Lain's room rather interesting. Lain looked more carefree, was more talkative and the happy greeting her sister saw her doing sure was odd. The Wired seeping into reality, maybe?

Anyways, rather captivating episode overall. Looking forward to seeing what Lain will do now that she owns this impressive Psyche chip.

The wired or the network has something to do with the internet persona that a person holds, it has many similarities with live streaming, and people with better hardware or better bandwidth are the ones with the most robust personas.
Lain never had a persona ever before. Someone else was doing it for her, and now it has been transported to Lain to carry forward it, but I think the persona that (previous) Lain made was an important one, like an Emporer of Wired or like a Goddess of Wired.
But the Navi(The Weird computer OS) is slowly changing the current Lain to what Wired wants Lain to look like. And Psyche being like the booster in the process.
The Lain is developing in these three episodes to become a multi-personality being, but I think Navi is responsible for all this mess.
But don't take it seriously as I could be wrong.

I think so too, that there's a wired version of her that can exist in the real world, because "Everything is connected." One of the creeps saying, "We're not here, you see" suggests the same. Maybe there's no sense of time in the Wired, and they know what she is about to become?
