Because of the ending - "Shine" by Mr. Big. The opening is pretty good too (I never skipped it), but "Shine" is just way too sexy, it might be one of the best anime endings ever, imo. Also there's a pun, because "Shine" in English means what it means, obviously, but in romanized Japanese it would be 「死ね」- an imperative of verb "to die", so "Die!". A pretty simple pun, nevertheless it gets the job done.

I would recommend one anime for a "starter" genre and the best anime to represent the genre

1. Shounen: Naruto
2. Seinen: Tokyo Ghoul
3. Shoujo: Ouran High School Host Club
4. Josei: Kuragahime
5. Comedy: Nichijou
6. Slice of Life: Hyouka
7. Sports: Haikyuu
8. Mecha: Gundam Seed Destiny
9. Psychological: Death Note
10. Horror: Another

My list would be something like this, in no particular order.

No Game No Life
Made in Abyss
Youjo Senki
Golden Kamuy
Id:Invaded
Munou na Nana
Psycho-Pass
Mob Psycho 100
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
+ something from the current season so they have something to watch weekly if they want.
We are only here for a short amount of time, I want to waste as much of that time possible doing nonsense

I see. Thank you for answering, and I agree that both the opening and the ending of the Hellsing TV series are really good.
I'm sorry for saying this, though, but I believe you are mistaken on the matter about the supposed pun. English words aren't turned into katakana based on how they are written in English, but based on how they sound. ʃaɪn would most likely be turned into シャイン, just like naɪn (nine) is turned into ナイン, even though the Japanese ン corresponds to the English "ng" (ŋ), and not to the English "n" (n).
There is some arbitrariness in the process of adapting foreign words, but I don't think there's much choice in the case of the English word "shine".

You’re actually right, however that’s not what I meant in the first place, i.e., I was talking about romanized Japanese in a sense of writing like this: “Kono chikaku ni hiroi eigakan ga aru no dakedo”, which normally would be written like: 「この近くに広い映画館があるんだけど」, and that’s what I precisely meant about romanizing Japanese. The conversion you were talking about is ADAPTING an English word into Japanese turning it into 外来語 (a foreign-borrowed word). That would be シャイン, just as you’ve written.

Lets see. For a total beginner, it might be good to get to know an recommandable anime of very different genre and settings. I think as a beginner, the person itself doesnt really know what their taste will be, so better try a bit of everything.

Additionally, I think suggesting very long anime like One Piece or Naruto (even though they might be good... lets say they are.) are not suited for a beginner because its too big of a commitment. If you dont know what you like, but then are caught in a 50+ episode show that you dont enjoy is no fun. So I think its better to stick to 1 or 2-cour anime.

Now what would be a good mixed bag of short, recommendable anime that cater to different likes but are easily enjoyed.. I conducted the following meal to serve for a fresh beginner to start out their anime adventure.

1. For the Action serving: Psycho-Pass
2. For the Romance serving: Toradora
3. For the Drama serving: Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso
4. For the mystery serving: Made in Abyss
5. For the comedy serving: Danshikoukousei no Nichijou
6. For the Fantasy serving: Violet Evergarden
7. For the Sports serving: Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru
8. For the Slice of Life serving: Sora yori mo Tooi Basho
9. For the Thriller serving: Yakusoku no Neverland
10. For the Sci-Fi serving: Kiseijuu

Honorbale mention that didnt make the list even though it would meet all my criteria: Steins Gate (because anime that hit the same vein are already chosen: Kiseijuu, Yakusoku no Neverland)

Of course this menu is somewhat influenced by my own tastes or favorites, but I tried to stay away from anime that only I seem to enjoy. I think the ones listed are widely accepted as "okay" anime at least. Its easy to find someone who would recommend like One Piece (too long), Sword Art Online (very polarizing opinions) or Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (somewhat niche) and those are all fine and enjoyed by some. But in my list I tried to decide against those for reasons stated above.

Let me know how to improve this list!

It's kinda sad here how much battle shounen are named. If my first anime had been Hero Academia or Demon Slayer for example, my impression about anime would have been quite negative overall. Especially because they can be way too much over the top and have too cringe humor and characters at times. There is no standard solution for everyone.

But if you want a more standard answer:

1. Spirited Away
2. Princess Mononoke
3. A third Ghibli movie lol or another good movie
4. Maybe something like The Promised Neverland or Made in Abyss, a great darker series
5. Guardian Of The Spirit or another really good fantasy series like Dororo, but not anything too long
6. A shounen like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (althoigh it might be too long for some as one of their first anime series) or another that doesn't have dozens of episodes
7. A bit more realistic drama like Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
8. Another drama like Your Lie in April or something else with music like Piano no Forest or maybe something like A Place Further Than The Universe
9. A good romance like Bloom Into You, Paradise Kiss etc...
10. A shoujo like Akatsuki no Yona or Fruits Basket

I think it's good to show them different genres

Tbh, I would list off stuff like every one else, but I feel like it depends on the newbies tastes. Like I ain't going to recommend animes with romance animes to someone that might not like romance and I ain't going to recommend a graphic violent anime to someone that might not like blood or fighting and so on etc. So my list would always change depending on the person.

I also think that you shouldn't recommend animes with more than 30 episodes. If they are just starting out, it might be too much for some people to handle huge running animes

It would depend on the genre preferred by them. Any popular anime could be a good recommendation if they like the genre and synopsis.

"Which ten anime are the perfect starter pack for a newbie in your opinion?"

1. Naaah, not all newbies have the same interests. Some like action, some melodrama, some are interested in the media itself and its traditions (yeah, like that will ever happen) ect.
And some just want to be part of the herd and want only the most popular stuff in order to have common conversational topics with the fandom.
Only one list wouldn't cut it. You need at least 10 thematic lists of starter packs of 10s.

2. People mainly would't care about what is actually good for the newbies. They will just aggressively indoctrinated their own taste in anime.

In my opinion if there is a newbie who don't like anime but cuz of friends encouragement, decided to watch anime, I would recommend these

    [1]Attack on Titan
    [2]Death Note

These are only three, sorry.
I recommended these because these anime would make them to continue watching more anime.

(For "SUBBED" watchers) I recommend you not to start with the TOP Anime, as mentioned in most comments, if you really want to enjoy the Anime. This is for those who wants to make carrier as a WEEB.

(For "DUBBED" watchers) You can start with any top Anime, as mentioned in most comments above.

============================

Btw, perfect starter pack has HENTAI in the first place, from a guy's perspective, if you don't claim to be pure.

I think, if you are a weeb , who watches "subbed" Anime, it's better if you start with medium or slow paced anime. That way, you will get hold of japanese conversation pace & it will be easy for you to enjoy most popular (TOP) Anime.

HENTAIs are the perfect (most likely) starter pack for a newbie guy, if you want him to stick to the ANIME.

Well, there are many aspects to it, but this is generally it.

I don't understand why everyone is picking Angel Beats. It starts way too slow and the first few episodes are extremely cringe with the humor. Clannad is a way better pick imo since it is more consistent and better overall.

Here's my list:

Essentials

- Death Note - no explanation needed, this anime is suited to almost anyone who has half a brain cell and doesn't just want to watch battle shounen.

- Code Geass - Basically Death Note on steroids.

- Cowboy Bebop and/or Samurai Champloo - Both are classics, personally I like SC a bit more as it is funnier and has more action. Both also have great OPs and EDs.

- FMA:B - A popular series that has lighthearted moments, but also darker stuff.

- Naruto and/or One Piece - OP is maybe a bit too long to catch up on, and it may be hard to get into in the beginning. It is the best battle shounen by far though. Naruto is also another good pick, and if you skip the fillers, it's not too bad to watch.

Some people recommend MHA, but I don't think it's near the level of those two, not by a long shot. Fairy Tail and Bleach are even worse.

Semi-Essentials

- Your Lie In April - pretty popular music/drama anime, so might as well give it a watch.

- OreGairu and/or Kaguya-sama: Love is War - These are the best romcom anime imo. Maybe better to watch OreGairu first since it is already finished, and watch Kaguya when S3 is there, since the quality will go up exponentially at that point.

-Haikyuu - Even though I think it is extremely overrated (I talked about it in another post), it is one of the better shounen sports anime. The animations are nice and overall it is fun to watch.

-Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - Can't believe no one recommended this. Bunny girl senpai is a good alternative too.

-Kill la Kill and/or Gurren Lagann -By far the best ecchi series, and funny AF.

And tons of other series I can't think of atm, but those would be a good starting point I think.

I disagree, it has some of the most memorable characters, so it's a good introduction to some character types that can be found often in anime.

+1 to 177013. Truly a masterpiece (no irony)!

As for my Ten Picks, I would go with...
- Dragon Ball (my all-time favorite! 'Tis a classic)
- One Piece
- MHA (personally don't like it, but is really popular)
- Kaguya-sama (it's very funny plus dat animation!)
- Detective Conan
- Death Note (haven't watched it yet, but definitely a great choice)
- Mob Psycho 100 (haven't watched but I heard it's great)
- Slam Dunk (so awesome, you really want to be the King of Rebound himself. Gahahahaha!)
- YuYu Hakusho (at least until the end of the Dark Tournament arc it was fantastic)
- Nichijou (over-the-top animation and comedy, one of the best skit-based comedies I watched)

Once they get suckered in, they'll be ready for Evangelion and Madoka Magica. ;)

I wanted to give a broad experience, SAO is a light take on both Harem and Isekai while having enough action to keep a newcomer entertained.

Also it's an anime that you enjoy more the fewer anime you see, that's why I'd say to watch it early.

If you want a friend of you to start watching Anime, going about what he likes is way better.

Gamers, Isekai and Fantasy if they are scrubs.

Sport dudes, sport shows.

It's the best way to get people into watching Anime as they can relate much easier then giving them a show to watch like Noruto-chin.

1. Spirted Away > Ghibli is a nice easy way to get into anime and Spirted Away is probably one of the best ones for beginners to try.

2. Death Note > Every list needs a good dark plotted anime. Helps this is quite well known. Concepts are easy enough to follow too.

3. Sailor Moon > Every list also requires a popular classic. Sailor Moon is THE Magical girl anime and you can't start anime without knowing the magical girl genre.

4. Full Metal Alchemist/ Brotherhood > Another classic but one that represents a different genre. Has a great plot and great characters. Also at 52 episodes for FMA it's a good introduction to longer anime.

5. Naruto > Needs a good Shounen that's relatively easy to follow. Naruto has plenty of battle shounen action and intrigue to keep a newbie entertained.

6. March Comes in Like a Lion > Need to see at least one Slice of Life. It's not my genre but I've heard lots of good things about March . (sol that I watch may not be best for a newbie)

7. Haikyuu!! > Sports anime are like Marmite but I think a newbie has to try at least one and Haikyu is best for someone new to anime. It explains the sport, has plenty of characters to enjoy and is really good.

8. Cowboy Bebop > Dub is not always bad and for someone overwhelmed by learning to read subtitles english language might get them familair. Also Cowboy Bebop is one of the better dubs out there.

9. One Punch Man > You don't need to have a deep plot. Sometimes you just need to chill down and enjoy the fighting.

10. Ouran High School > I'm not big on romance but this was enjoyable and is another classic you need to see. Also a nice pleasant sort of harem anime. Another staple genre.

"I suffered all my life. No one ever truly loved me. No one ever truly cared about me. I only loved one thing in my whole life and that was Christina Menefee. But she was torn away from me. I tried to save myself with [student’s name], but she never cared for me. As it turns out, she made fun of me behind my back while we were together. And all throughout my life I was ridiculed. Always beaten, always hated. [...] I am malicious because I am miserable."

"It was not a cry for attention, it was not a cry for help. It was a scream in sheer agony [...]"

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."
