So, first of all, i'm a girl though i'm an adult and second, not at all, i watched Sailor Moon, Wedding Peach, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne and Ojamajo Doremi when i was a child, also, Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear was the first anime i watched after really finding out what anime is, i also really loved Sugar Sugar Rune and right now i'm watching Yes! Precure 5 and i'm enjoying it as well, really liking the characters! My favorite magical girl anime are(and i highly recommend them!): Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon + all of it's sequels, Full Moon wo Sagashite(well, some people think this is a magical girl anime but i disagree!), Ojamajo Doremi(Saw only the first two seasons), Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear, Sugar Sugar Rune and Yes! Precure 5(Haven't finished it yet though). |

It's a really cute, fun show, but I would rather die than have any of my family members know I watch it... I also feel weird for watching/enjoying a show meant for little girls that I didn't grow up with. I wish there were decent English dubs so that I could at least make the excuse of watching it with my younger cousins. Like I love shoujo and mahou shoujo so I don't intend to stop watching precure any time soon but I do feel a certain amount of embarrassment over it. Yeah, my biggest fear is being labeled a pedophile by my peers. People say other people's opinions don't matter but in a small town a damaged reputation follows you. Stillm I'm not stopping watching precure but the worry still lingers. |

it depends. I mean, I didn't feel uncomfortable watching Madoka Magica than when I watched Glitter Force. Magical Girl anime are pretty weird but anime like Magical Girl Ore, Madoka Magica, and Kill La Kill (it's a magical girl anime according to Google) make you uncomfortable but in a good way. |

Although it is now considered an acceptable hobby, I feel weird watching anime in general. I am well aware one of my coworkers is an anime watcher and an avid gamer, but I still feel incredible uncomfortable to watch anything full of vibrant colors at work. |

I admit watching a full girlish anime starts up being full cringe, but you'll get used to it. It happened with me and Love Live XD. I'll probably suffer the same if I watch Sailor Moon for example, but will get used to it within time. |

I never thought about it before. I almost always watch anime alone, so I don't feel weird for watching magical girl anime. But I think if one of my friends were to see me watching a magical girl anime, I think I'd get a little self-conscious about it. |

Yeah, after I made this thread I ended up watching an episode of precure during my lunch break at work and nobody seemed to really care. I would know too since there are like 5 of us and we all give eachother alot of shit, lol. The concern in still there but less now. |

This question seems a lot like the really tired MLP discourse going on not too long ago. There's nothing wrong with guys watching stuff intended for young girls/kids, as long as its not sexualized or anything gross. But for real, watching stuff intended for kids really can be so cathartic! "Grown-up" shows tend to be super politically charged or reflect adult themes, so sometimes its nice to like, put yourself back into the mind of a kid and watch braindead shows. |

Magical girl anime is rarely shoujo nowadays. It's mostly either seinen or shounen anime, with a pattern hard to predict. I might be wrong, but if I'd be happy if you point it out. |

Nah, I feel nothing wrong when I watch magical girl anime. Magical girl anime is such a great thing and it's always there to cheer me up. I don't care who it was originally intended for, if it appeals to me or any other adult I don't see any problem with us watching it. Targeted demographics are more of suggestions and predictions than rules or regulations. |

Don't feel bad my friend. You are not alone. My first anime, and I didn't even think it was an anime show, was the old Speed Racer from the 1960s. After that it was Kimba the White Lion. When I was in my teens years later, I ran home every day from the bus to watch Star Blazers. I would say that it was 20 years, in my late 30s, I was at our public library and found a complete manga collection of Card Capter Sakura. After I learned how to read manga, I read every volume. Then I found out there was an anime of it and checked out of a local anime rented store. I didn't think it was girly to watch it. I loved it. It's a great show, a great story. I didn't know it was about a magical girl. Oh, of all the manga and anime that I've watched and read over the years, I too have never watched Sailor Moon. My wife did once, but now I'm going to start watching it too. |

I watched random episodes of Sailor Moon on TV as a kid. I just perceived it as another cartoon to watch. I put off watching Madoka Magica for years because I thought it would be too cutesy. Boy, was I wrong. It's dark, dramatic, and perfectly suitable for adult male viewers. I highly recommend the movie trilogy. (The first two are like a superior version of the series, whereas the third is a sequel.) |

Though it may have to do with the fact that I'm a girl and the first anime I remember ever watching was Sailor Moon since we used to have a VHS of it.For some context; I decided to start watching precure. I picked a season and I’m having fun with it. There is a problem though. Maybe this is because I grew up as a boy to man but I feel like I’m a creep for watching and enjoying such a juvenile piece of girl’s media. My question is do or did any of you feel this way when you watch/watched magical girl anime? It's probably my favorite genre in anime (you might find that pretty obvious if you check my profile or either of my lists). I see a couple of people here bringing up anime (love that people are actually bringing up Prétear here, that's a bit more of an obscure title in the magical girl genre—I thought the anime was okay but I definitely preferred the original manga's story more), so I'll bring up some too. Aside from Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura (which were my first anime and first manga respectively, both are also in my favorites), there's lots of other great magical girl shows too, like Ojamajo Doremi, Yuki Yuna is a Hero, and Uta Kata (which I recommend if you're a fellow Madoka Magica fan, it's really underrated). Nettle_Tea said: Indeed a cursed image (especially since I love Madoka, so this just makes me cringe even more), but the reaction of the normal guy on the side makes me laughCosmicbeingx said: The scariest image to ever behold...yeah and highschool moe and slice of life etc piss me off, basically same feels normal people have for otakus for the reason stated previously. |

Isn't it more manly to do what you want and not care what others think? Most people strive for that their whole life. Besides, wouldn't it be more natural for a man to want to watch cute girls doing cute things? I mean as a little girl it serves as an inspiration. But for guys it's just pleasant to see? I just think of Dante ordering a strawberry sundae in a bar every time, real man's wants what he wants and doesn't care. |

The only magical girl anime show I've tried watching was Madoko and I dropped it after 8 episodes as it was just too dark and didn't like it. That said, as a guy, yes I do feel like I'm intruding whenever I've watched a show that is based around magical girls. It's like that feeling when you get caught playing with your sisters dolls or doll house when you were a young kid (for me I was making the dolls act out wrestling moves from WWF, but it was still 'playing with dolls'). It's an activity that society tells you isn't for your gender so you shouldn't enjoy it. Good thing I don't listen to society, haha. |

Not at all really. I am a dude, and some of the first anime i've ever seen included magical girls, like Tokyo Mew Mew, Kaitou Saint Tail, Ojamanjo Doremi, Sailor Moon... so, despite being a guy, i also grew up watching those type of shows. And last year, i've watched Cardcaptor Sakura, and for me, that anime is absolutely amazing and i felt really happy to have watched everything, without any regrets. |

In the case of mahou shoujo you just watch some kids doing magical stuff, how can this be weird? Maybe boring and uninteresting if you don't appreciate such shows but weird in which way? And yes some shows like Prisma☆Illya does feel unconformable because of all the yuri and other unnecessary and stupid sexual fanservice stuff...but I think Percure shouldn't be one of those. Even if one did, doesn't matter. In Kiss X Sis, I associated myself with Ako and Riko much more so than I did with Keita. |

I dont think its abnormal to feel weird to watch it as a boy. You probably would feel less weird watching it with a girlfriend, even though you would enjoy it to the same extent. The problem is society is trying to dictate what you have to like and what not. Because you get told that its weird so many times you unconsciously have that feeling. I lived with my brother in a apartment and we had that really anoying neighbour above us who would complain about us being to loud like once a week. One day we went to the cinema with our friends and when the comercials started (commercials are always really loud in our cinemas) i turned to my brother and said "Dude i just felt like we have to turn the sound down or our neighbour will complain again". My brother answerd "Shit i just thought the same". |

Well, it started off in the trainspotter community being used to describe trains in the 70s I think, and was first used in the anime community towards mecha, but identifying feelings towards anime girls as 'moe' has only happened for the past two decades, or thereabouts. Similar feelings may have existed well before then, but I don't believe they had a word. |
