...I don't tend to start anime that are still airing and already have over 100 episodes. I am also more likely to watch a longer anime if it's split into shorter seasons. I could watch the first season of precure without feeling like I had dropped the series whereas if I watch the first 50 episodes of One Piece it wouldn't feel like I had accomplished as much.

This is very much how I feel about long runners in general. If it's airing I generally try to avoid it regardless, but particularly if it's something such as One Piece. I also feel better if it's split into shorter seasons or arcs; To LOVE-Ru being split up into four distinct, finished current seasons feels a lot better on the spirit than knowing that it's an ongoing 74+ (if you count some of the OVAs) show. It also gives much better spots to pause at in terms of putting it on the backburner and resuming it later, with a sense of place in terms of story ("story" for TLR).

From a "gotta watch 'em all" perspective, it also feels a lot better to watch six 12-13 episode shows rather than something that's 74 episodes in length (to use TLR an example on the opposite side); it gives a greater sense of completion to me. I believe someone said something similar.

To answer the OP question, I don't avoid watching them entirely, but they're set very, very low on the priority list. And if they're currently airing (a la One Piece) then they won't be started until they're already finished.

Yes. After a certain length, it just gets monotonous and I want a change of setting. I get bored very easily. For instance, I really like Death Note, but if they decided to somehow make 70 more episodes of that, I wouldn't be thrilled to watch all that.

No. Most of the long running anime I've watched I've liked. For whatever reason they are easier to watch and finish than 1-2 cour shows.

I'd be lying if I said yes.
Since I tend to watch them anyways even if I am left behind by 300+ episodes.
They are great for marathon runs. I mean could take weeks or months, but its a brilliant ride.

Avoid.

You can fit 8 cours in 100 episodes. That's 8 or 4 unique anime. And the one's numbering in hundreds -- just, no. Maybe after I've whittled the PTW down to 10 I'll investigate some of the most popular or highly rated ones.

I prefer watching 12/24 ep series, because for me I just get confused after too many episodes, and my OCD makes it difficult for me to watch more then one series at a time.

The only 100+ ep anime I've completed was Hunter x Hunter 2011.

Length don't necessarily make for a developed story. Dragging is worse than an undeveloped idea.

Yes, i feel the pain when anime has like 50 or more episodes.
Also, long running anime tend to have lots of filler episodes (and by filler i mean episodes that have no connection to main story whatsoever)

I don't avoid them. I actually like long-running series. I watched Gintama when it had already finished airing, and I had some longer breaks while watching it, but it's one of my favorite anime now.
About 1,5 year ago I'd stared rewatching Dragon Ball, and well, finished only about a month ago. Now I'm watching Dragon Ball Z, few episodes every day.
I've watched Bleach, Fairy Tail and Katekyo Hitman Reborn! And some Pokemon series if it counts.
I'm stuck on 143 episode of One Piece. And I can't seem to finish Toriko.
I plan to watch Prince of Tennis and Urusei Yatsura. Maybe Inuyasha and Hunter x Hunter (2011) too.
I like pancakes.

It's not that i dont watch long anime anymore (except gintama and ff-ing fairy tail, op and naruto), but i find it hard to motivate myself to start longer series.
For example, it took me 2-3 years to start gintama after putting it in PTW. Same for Uchuu Kyodai, but enjoyed them in the end. As stated in a post before, i put long anime on a lower priority rather than not watch it.

You could also watch 2 four cour anime. Four cour seems to be long enough to develop the characters and tell a very good story without being so long that the quality starts to drop and the show becomes tedious to watch. One Piece is the same length as 14 four cour anime and Sazae-San is the length of 48.

One Piece was certainly enjoyable, until I caught up that is.

An anime with as many episodes as 100+ usually means that its somewhat enjoyable. Otherwise it would've been dropped.

Most long running anime are shounens like OP, Naruto, Bleach, Hunter X Hunter and FT. Starting one is a daunting task on its own, plus there are also a bunch of filler arcs that may span a decent amount of episodes and that may lose the viewers interest. But they do have their own appeal. I don't follow long-running anime but I have watched some i.e. FT and Gintama, the ones that I liked.

By that way of thinking you can fit 8 or 4 movies in 2 and 1 cour series, respectively. Movies also have more animation quality so spending time in seasonal TV series is a big no.

Nope.

I've seen DBZ, the first series of Naruto, all but the last canon arc of Bleach, and currently watching One Piece and Fairy Tail.
I do tend to put them off a lot compared to other shows (because of how long each arc can be) but there'll be days where I sit down and watch a lot of episodes at once.

I do want to get around to watching Gintama, but seeing as I still have a lot of OP and FT to go, I don't wanna start that as well..
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!
