Add also that he is likely involved in the case from episode 2 with Ii-chan. That drugged dude - killer was saying he wants to catch butterflies, when arrested was saying to the cops "Please, man. I seriously need the butterflies... I have to... I have to get them to him..." and there was that brief moment at the end when Sakurako looked at the crowd sensing someone observing them only to see the person must have already left judging from the gap between the crowd that was shown.

Sakurako-san has a nice ass but seeing Shoutarou focus on it made me want to stab the fucker. Don't touch Sakurako-san, you desperate high school runt. Sigh. I'm just being a bitter bastard.

The series is nearing an end, I hope we get to see Sakurako's fiance soon, perhaps it's butterfly man.

All the series has been building up to Butterfly Man as the main antagonist. But 3eps is too short a time to have him do his work. At best he'll come off as laughable, and it's hard to build a good climax when the main focus is on characters who were just introduced. Feels rushed man.

I very much doubt we'll see the end of butterfly man this season. Just like every detective villain he's going to disappear or pretend to die ala Moriarty or Takato from Kindaichi. Never ignore the possibility of 2nd season especially since the original novel itself is still ongoing.

Dear god no. The only thing that'd make this season is just a really shallow introduction to the guy then. We don't even know about Sakurako's grandfather or fiance yet, either, now that I think about it. Thought that this series would introduce these characters and flesh them out along the way.

That was probably the intention anyway. After all this season had been dealing with the past of every character in sequence. A few obligatory introduction episodes, the foreshadowing of the painter, the story of Yuriko and her grandmother, Sakurako and her cats, now sensei and his former students. Naturally there are many things we still don't know about Sakurako and she (and her family) hides more secrets than a 12 episodes anime can cover satisfyingly. Obviously they can't ignore the side characters like sensei and Yuriko if they're going to play vital parts in the greater scheme of things. Even if they don't get a 2nd season they've done enough to introduce viewers to the characters and enough plot teasing to entice people to buy the novels. The way they pace the story though, makes me thing they are planning for a 2nd season. Either way a good mystery novel would need a villain, it'd be disappointing if he's someone that Sakurako can defeat in just a few episodes.

Well they haven't done a good job at showcasing whether or not Sakurako can deal with this dude in her sleep or not. The fact that he almost seems like he's teasing her in the background with parked cars and shit almost makes it seem like that'd be the case. It all depends on the climax I guess but so far I'm not impressed in the slightest.

Unlikely. While it's possible to reach every part of the back, the strength and precision needed wouldn't be there. I think we are supposed to assume it's an 'artwork'.

The text is excerpts from case files. The folder is the one she got from her uncle, the paraplegic pathologist.

I think it's safe to say that her uncle was collecting them because he suspected they were related, ie that a serial killer was operating in the region. Which forms an obvious connection to the case in the episode.

You seem to be forgetting about the warnings that the guy in hospital bed (most likely Sakurako's uncle) gave to her about "not getting in too deep in stuffs that's out of her league".. or something like that. If this is like your usual mystery novel, those scenes seemed to imply that there's something far more sinister lurking in the background and that the painter was involved somehow. For all we know he could be someone that the police had been chasing for a long time or maybe he's some sort of criminal mastermind that put the mysterious guy in hospital. All these elements seem to be too significant not to be related to each other, which is why I thought that the villain would not be defeated so easily in merely 2-3 episodes. Sakurako herself doesn't seem to recognize the painter directly so it's very likely that this case is merely to introduce her to him.

Now that was a good episode! So we have three girls who were in Isozaki's class and one of them had already disappeared and another just went missing ... because of this artist Hanabusa! The same guy who painted the "cursed painting" and, well, seems to have somehow have ahold of Minami and Hitoe. The "butterfly" he was searching for certainly seems to like dead bodies so ... hmm, he wants the girls to cut themselves up for him? O_O Or something like that ... well, I'm actually very interested to see where this one goes - especially to see what Sakurako's doing! :O

I dunno, Sakurako seems almost way too arogant sometimes... she despised her parents so much she was unnecessary rude to them, really don't like this behavior of hers (as it servers mainly for viewer to understand relations in this series). She is also way too pushy when trying to get into other peoples house.
Her logical deductions are also something unnatural. She is making asumptions based on things that really doesn't stand out if you know nothing of the person. She magically knows everything. It always feels like she is reading the script beforehand to gain those insights.

Anyway, everything just seems like they are dealing with some shady sect or cult. Or with one deranged and lunatic individual. And this goes back to very beginning.

And by the pacing of this... I don't believe they can tie-up all lines so close to the end of the series.. this is shame but I have the feeling this series ends rather openly.

Wow, Isozaki and Kougami are infinitely more interesting than Sakurako and Shoutarou at this point.

But on a good note, this mystery is really interesting and the whole butterfly angle is really working for me. I got chills at two points in this episode, both in the last 2 minutes, lol. First, when Sakurako was looking through that homicide report at the end and the picture of the sphenoid bone came up... you know the one that looks like a butterfly *shiver*. Second, when we were shown Minami's bare back.

So this Hanabusa picks a girl, then makes them lose everything that ties to reality, by taking way the things/people they care about most, and subsequently tries to convince them to kill themselves.

He sees it as their deaths being for the sake of his art: like Lethe Diana's they swarm around corpses untill they themselves pass and initiate a new cycle of metamorphosis.

He tried with Minami by breaking up the group and taking Futoba, when she refused to see it all the way through, he tried with Hitoe using Minami as leverage. He had also tried with Sakurako in the past, by taking her cats and ultimately her little brother, but failed mainly because he hadn't taken into account Sakurako's mind, which is too logical and not "hampered" as much by emotions as the average human's would.

Am I making any sense, or did I have too much to drink?

This was a very interesting episode, but I don't get how they can finish everything with only 2 episodes. There's still the mystery behind "Soutarou" (Sakurako's brother?), that guy in the hospital... and surely there'll be some type of resolution regarding Futaba, right? I mean, she went missing and was never found! That just screams, "We'll find her!"
