One of the most beautiful animations I've seen, and a really sweet short story with a side of drama. Also, an amazing OST, amazing characters and a great message. A 45-minute masterpiece.

finally got around to watching the movie that created all those beautiful gifs all over the internet. the story was pretty simple but it was worth watching just for the animation. i thought it would be longer as well, i'm not surprised they couldn't achieve much with such a short amount of time

The execution and directing of the movie was incredibly well done. The director really did a great job in engaging you, enthralling you with the visuals, pacing, tense atmosphere, sense of intrigue; incredible sign of a master.

However, the story really wasn't great, especially as it went on. More and more flaws and dissonance would arise with how questionable and convenient the plot devices were. Forcing drama and the viewer to suspend their disbelief instead of telling a more relatable and believable story. Who keeps meeting up with people without asking their name, for instance? And other little instances. Aside from that, the story WAS very good when it was relatable and believable. And the flawed story really doesn't take away the masterful directing, masking even the flaws I mentioned earlier. Very, very impressed with this film. 9/10.

Honestly. I feel that I'm the only one who didn't really enjoy this short story. I mean dont get me wrong the visuals and audio were excellent but the story line not so much. I mean I understand the trend and why this anime is so popular but it was't realistic in a sense that a 15 year old and a 27 year old. Love? Isn't that like illegal tho. I think if the roles were swapped and the 15 year old was a girl and the 27 year old was a man, I think it would get a ton of shit for that. The meaning and simplicty of the movie was great but I just dont like the romance concept of it. It wasn't needed and honestly is kind of makes me feel uncomfortable if this was to happen in reality. Solid 5/10

Finally watched it. Well I guess I am disappointed. This nothing other than visual eyecandy. I imagine a lot of people rated this highly because of the quality in sound and visuals but really the story was just a boring melodramatic mess. It had a fairly interesting twist but being only 40 minutes long it had little impact and I didn't feel any attachment to the characters. There wasn't enough time to build up their relationship to make me.imvested and when it did climax it ended being an out of place emotional rant from the mc that seemed only to exist to stir something up. It was poorly done and made me uncomfortable not because it was distressing but because it was so ridiculous.

"But it's beautiful!" People will say but it's just to distract you from the fact that the story was crap.

Of course it would start raining as I watch this. Garden of Words is incredibly atmospheric and immeasurably gorgeous. For 45 minutes, I found myself drawn into each and every detail. It took all of 5 seconds to figure out I was watching a Makoto Shinkai work. Truly a master of aesthetics as his works always come to life in indescribable awe.

The story went well enough. Given the length of the movie, it was straightforward enough and did what it set out to do. There's a surprising amount of quiet throughout, but it's within those moments that the characters & their connection can be shown in ways that words will sometimes fall short of. Particularly the scene where Takao measures Yukino's feet in such a delicate manner. I liked watching as these two, who were initially united by rainy days, learned how to walk through each other. Takao was inspired by his love for Yukino as well as his desire to one day catch up to her. And Yukino, who saw how hard Takao was working to pursue his passion.

7/10.

God damn it another Shinkai work and he hits it out of the park again....but damn it I wish his stories had happier endings!

And this was just visual art heaven. An embarrassment of riches in that department.

I love this animation so much. It's so gorgeous, certainly one of the most impressive I ever saw. I love everything about its setting with rain, and that park too.

I love how Takao was such an earnest boy, he had to grow up soon, taking care of the house, working, and stuff. But he had a goal, and he strived for it. His chance meeting with Yukino was beautiful too, she was going through a lot, and like she said herself: meeting him there saved her.

They both fell in love, but the circumstances weren't ideal. Her moving back to her hometown was something already decided, and she needed to go in order to heal. Fortunately both of them were able to tell each other how they felt, and they are in contact. It's sad to see it end with them apart, but it also ends with a very hopeful note.

Those third years were disgusting though, trying to ruin someone's career, and reputation over petty jealousy and not even feeling any sorry for what they did. I'm all against violence, but that slap was on point. I hope he was able to give the guy a punch or two too.

the anime has incridible backround grapich, i think for the art is more than kimi no nawa,, and the detail and the texture is very soft,, i love this, the anime is enjoyable,, i can feel peace in the rain,, meet and talking in the garden under rain is very fresh for me,, but the plot is not that good,, in the end just telling what they feeling each other and confess it,, then after that they never meet again.. 7/10

This might be an unpopular opinion but I liked this movie more than Kimi no na wa. The story and characters backstory were much better than Kimi no na wa. The soundtrack of this movie is not as good as Kimi no na wa's. The visuals were stunning as expected of Makoto Shinkai' movies.

I gotta say she has a very nice foot lol
jokes aside I very much enjoyed this ova\movie.
the animation and art were breathtaking possibly the best I've ever seen, the story was ok!
the biggest problem in this ova is its length it is way too short I couldn't get invested in the story or characters, therefore, I couldn't really feel anything for them at the end!

I rewatched this... man, I loved it a lot more than I did the first time I watched it.. felt it differently. I guess I relate to the characters a lot more now than I could a couple of years ago. Yukino and Takao are very beautiful characters..

This is a masterpiece, so poetic, touching.. has that magical thing going on in all the realism.. I wish I could express how beautiful their connection is and moments shared together and away from each other.. Loved every second of it..

Finally got to see this thanks to Netflix, enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The age difference was a little weird to me too, but then I think about all the series I've seen that had a similar adult/teenager dynamic (Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, X... so apparently mostly CLAMP series :p), and it makes me wonder if it's just seen differently in Japan. In CCS, I remember it being specifically mentioned that Sakura's father was a teacher at her mother's high school, and her mother married him right after graduation.

While the graphics and animation is god-tier as expected from a Shinkai film to the point where I can't praise it enough, that wasn't the only reason why I ended up absolutely loving this film. Takao and Yukino's interactions slowly but clearly getting more and more close as the rainy day season pitter-patters on was very heartwarming and gripped me from start to end. It's safe to say that I teared up at their emotional climax~

I really liked seeing them ending up as a means of supporting each other through the tough times they're both going through and I'm truly glad that the movie concluded with him getting the resolve to finally meet up with her again after so long ♥

It's also cool to find out that both of them appeared in other Shinkai flicks that I've already watched.

Graceful technique. But wobbly execution.

Kinda surprised how fucking normie this was in the story department; there were things in this movie that are obviously very unique to it. Like main guy (seriously you will never remember these characters names) wanting to become a cobbler, the rain themes, and the forbidden nature of the age gap. But aside from that and some quirks here and there, this movie is flat lined. This movie could be live action and nothing would change. Yes the animation is lovely and breathe taking, of course it is. But y'all telling me watching photo realistic animation gives the same rush and watching something only animation can give you?

I will give props that the ending where they didn't get together or even try to pursue it did feel almost refreshing. But will I remember anything other then how beautiful the animation and certain scenes look aesthetically. No. I don't care about these characters nor do I wonder how they'll fair into their futures.

It's a hallmark movie. Get with it.

I completely forgot how amazing this short movie was. Not just the animation, though hory shiet 7 years ago and it looks THIS amazing. But the story was quite touching as well, and neither did it have supernatural meetings or a hard "lol bye" ending.
Really I didnt remember it to be this good, and quite positive even.

Makoto Shinkai really is a gift to this industry.

Amazing animation. I only wish that this was longer to have an epilogue where they're reunited years later. Interesting premise since there aren't many serious romance movies that have a premise like this one. The background music softened moments to make them feel more intimate.

Also, I think everyone can agree it's hard to believe that this was made in 2013. The visual quality seems way too good for that.

This movie's length confused me at first, but it was actually good, I liked it ! Yukino's character particularly touched me, a young, fragile woman who's clearly been through a lot and feels uncapable to walk by herself... I wanted to give her a hug at the end. And Kana Hanazawa did a great job ! She really expressed all the vulnerability of the character, and she broke my heart when she cried.
The guy, whose name I unfortunately can't remember, was pretty good too. When he told Yukino he hates her, I suddenly didn't know how to feel about this movie anymore, but then I remembered that he is only 15. Of course at this age, it is difficult to understand people like Yukino, it was very realistic actually, I like that.
I've seen people talking about foot fetish, but I don't think that's what to get from this story. Sure, the guy's hobby can raise some questions, especially given how he expresses it, but the movie itself uses the feet as a way to represent Yukino's inability to walk and I think it did a great job on that level.
Also, the visuals and soundtrack were beautiful.
Overall, it was a very good movie. Nothing amazing, but considering how simple the plot is, it did a great job.
I was hesitating between giving it a 7 or a 8, but I think I'll fo for an 8 ! It was very well done.

This one really didn't do anything for me. Animation is great but simply couldn't care that deeply about these two characters. A shoe crazy high school boy and a young female teacher (who has a hard time tasting food I guess?) and lost in life. Just seeing characters cry on screen isn't enough, got to care more. Perhaps if the story was longer and more time given to flesh them out would have helped? Meh.

I was wary that I might get disappointed with this movie! Thank goodness! I was proven wrong! Yukino's words were not definite but the actions were enough. The ending doesn't need to be that cliche thing you always see in movies or series, where the couple lived happily ever after. The kind of movie which makes you cry out for more is what you call an outstanding movie! Because it's going to linger in your mind for a while.

The long distance relationship between Yukino and Akizuki; and an exchange of letters would be enough for the moment. Seeing as she used to work as a teacher in the same school that Akizuki goes to. I loved the part when Akizuki said: One day, when I can walk much farther on my own...I will go see her. That's good enough message for me! It means he plans a future for the two of them.

She got him back. If you understand the characters well enough, you'd know she did!

..............this was so relaxing and beautiful to watch after a long day of work, the visuals were so stunning and the animation was so fluid, so beautiful

i loved that he was a shoemaker, he was an interesting, hardworking and driven MC

loved that ending song it was lovely

2 parts of this film really struck me

the flashback scene where Takao's mother receives the Diana shoes, Shinkai mentions they tried to make the shoes glorious and sparkle in his memory, because that's what sparked Takao's love of shoes

Shinkai notes that it was important for the characters to be "separated" from the real world for their real selves to come out, if they were to meet at school it wouldn't be the same, but in this small world they share being sheltered by the rain their relationship blossoms. Basically in the beginning of the movie Yukino feels like a mystery (as Takao himself presents it), but after we start to see her failings in the kitchen we gradually come to realize she is a normal person.

i could also really relate to yukino, i literally have the same job & am facing a lot of struggles at work, that hit close to home

i actually loved the melodrama & how simple the story was

one day, when I can walk much farther on my own...I will go see her perfect ending

but i’ll probably remember over and over again
you were there and everyone else was there
— the day we all searched for just one thing

Animation and soundtrack are both perfect!
Although this is fiction, wherever you look at, their relationship is wrong. Age gap doesn't matter, but she's a teacher and he's a 15-year-old high school student. If they really love each other, they will wait until he graduates from vocational school or college. But, is that grooming? Not all relationships are sexual tho. Ugh. So complicated.

whenever I watch something from shinkai and his studio I always find myself thinking what if they try something else other than melodrama/romance/whatever? Even though this one was not a simple romance, but tackled other issues (takao's goals and yukino's loneliness/recovery)

I've watched only 5cm, this one and your name, but his other works should not be too different in tone

I'm very surprised by the high rating, the pacing and story were weak. The animation was obviously beautiful but I find it very difficult to believe that MC can't tell any of his friends about his ambitions. The reveal that she was a teacher at his school was an interesting surprise, but the staircase scene was weird.

Maybe it's because I'm a late 20s F but I find the age difference very difficult to believe. Also they never addressed the third year boy who apparently had feelings for her. So rushed.

This movie had a lot of potential but I was left disappointed.

First of all what is THIS Animation! It is way too realistic for a anime !
Second of all,I liked the development and the plot of the story even if many of you might disagree with me,this is my opinion!I liked it because it was a small drama movie with a hidden meaning in it(like 5 centimeters per second)<3
Third of all and most important of all,Never ...NEVER skip the last seconds in a movie! Most of the times these last seconds give the movie a whole different meaning and make it even better!
