lackluster ending, but logically makes sense.
i too agree that the “ghost” of yuuki sequence was quite annoying.
don’t play me like that :(

as to how it could’ve been prevented? i think the reason it ocurred was a lack of foresight and naievity from mirai. she hadn’t told mari either, nor did yuuki. the signs may have shown up, but he hid them. i remember mirai stated he would often do this when sick.

damn. i really wanted my boy to live :(

How's that possible, it totally got me, even though I knew right away that Yuuki died back there! I still think the reveal could have been handled way better than that. But that doesn't change the fact, that montage of Mirai and Yuuki growing up absolutely crushed my small kokoro, BAD THINGS HAPPENING TO INNOCENT KIDS ALWAYS MAKE ME CRY DAMMIT T^T

I also have to admit that I love the message of this final episode - keep on going forward, no matter what. That's something I really needed in my life right now, probably.

So glad I finally choose to watch it, it was worth the wait. Especially since there are no that many disaster m&a series out there! 8/10

I think Yuki dying “gradually” instead of immediately in Mirai’s perspective was more heartbreaking, contrary to some opinions. We sort of get an idea of Yuuki’s death when she dreams about it, but Mirai doesn’t for almost the entire rest of the journey. We see Mirai change because of Yuuki’s comforting and upbeat personality and we see them happy together, but then the show leaves subtle hints of his death, leaving us to grieve and worry about Mirai for a couple of episodes. Disasters like earthquakes don’t just cause immediate damage. They also create a lasting effect that people sometimes never heal from and I think Yuuki’s death is a reminder of that. What is important is that we move on after we’ve fallen.

Before watching this, I didn’t expect any of the main characters to die, even though many others around them did. A bittersweet and poignant anime.

This anime really got to me.

I went in expecting a very cliche story about some kids surviving the aftermath of a giant earthquake...and fully expecting a cliche happy ending.

Instead they pulled the rug out from under me and did a 180 on my expectations!

And while the last two episodes were VERY sad, I do not believe this is one of those anime that is sad for the sake of being sad or solely just to play on the emotions of the viewer.

The themes of Survivor’s guilt, appreciating what you have, and moving on were done very nicely IMO.

We started this anime with a bratty and annoying girl who complained about everything including her family.

By the end she learned just how important it is to care for your close ones and that life is not as pedantic as she first thought.

So yeah, I’m impressed.

Everything is okay but the ending is not.

It seems a forced drama for me, I'm glad at episode 9 that they don't do cliche of killing the brother (it's already cliche for me that the younger siblings always die to have drama), they killed Yuuki for the drama. I saw a similar thing (younger sibling die) in Korean movie and it really pains me so much that I don't want to watched another thing like this. I already have a hint when Yuuki said about dying but it makes me mad than sad. Everything will be perfect if they didn't do force kill the brother. Sometimes the anime didn't do good in drama (for me) the only thing that makes me sad is the volunteer old guy's grand kids died.

You don't need someone to die to make it sad / drama.

And also, it's weird for me, because the people around them have some scenes that they are crying and such but most is seems people are just compose and peacefully walking, in reality, it's not. In our country, it experience big earthquake too and people do looting, always afraid and traumatized, disorderly and such, die people everywhere.. just like how Titanic movie shows the turmoil .. that's the saddest hollywood movie I saw that just watching other people reacts on the tragedy makes me cry endlessly.. not only focus to main characters.. so I search for that kind of reaction maybe but it seems Japanese is really calm people.

Even if I knew what happened to Yuuki since it happened (from behaviour of Mari) it was so strong feeling in this episode :/ But good anime I can't say anything bad so 10/10 for me :) classic post natural catastrophe anime - first one I saw and I like this type of animes also was made so good (without any scifi/fantasy elements just natural disaster that can happen in our world any time)

Maybe one bad thing was personality of Mirai (before earthquake) - she had normal life, parents and friends but she was complaining like if she had tyrant parents and no friends in school

Realism as an art form, as simple and straightforward as anime gets. Microhistory in fiction. 7-8/10

Yuuki's death isn't a twist/reveal, I feel they made it clear enough from the start; EP8-10 was showing the viewers how MC Mirai deals with the coping mechanism

I feel that the hallucinated Yuuki was dragged out too long, it hurt the emotional weight for me when Mirai finally accepted what happened to him. Still teared up a bit but the road to get there was very bumpy, shame.

Wish Mari got better attention at the end as well, Mirai runs off and the woman who led her so far doesn't appear until a month later?

I'm honestly not sure how to rate this show I really enjoyed the first half but when the show decided to go the direction it did with Yuuki it became shaky.

it had been so long since i cried so hard like this. i had a feeling that yuuki's death was foreshadowed when he saved mirai from the falling tokyo tower and i think he died from a concussion but god i wished i was wrong. im very sad that yuuki died because he was such a lovable character and it made me sad that mirai repressed her memories of yuuki's death for a short time in order to cope and to go home. should've watched this a long time ago instead of keeping it in the "to watch list". i rode the feels train and im still trying to get off.

10/10 for me

Series basically saying "dead kids, please cry"
They also fucked up the ending, it was not even remotely sad because it was so predictable.
But its a 8 for music and an 9 for art.
3 for characters and 3 for story

We deserve less than Yuuki. We were given too much and couldn't handle-- didn't know how to love this kid properly. We are failures. Yuuki died for our sins.

EDIT: I also want to say, I appreciate how they didn't try to make Yuuki like cute or... moe. Perhaps they're guilty of making him too nice or a character without too many flaws-- like really, there's not much that Yuuki ever did wrong aside from like running off on his own sometimes-- but at least they didn't try to make him cute. They tried to make him a child, and that's fine with me because it's not subjective like "cute" is. I'm watching Sweetness and Lightning right now and it's like they do a lot to try to make Tsumugi "cute" instead of just making her a child. It's annoying. Here's the thing... if you focus on making a character who is supposed to be cute and they fail to be cute then your character has failed in that aspect. However, if you're focusing on making a character who is supposed to be a child and for some reason they don't come off as a child then hey whatever at least they're still an actual child. So I definitely appreciate that they seemed to go the latter direction with Yuuki, because I'm seeing how exasperating it is to see how it could have been if they tried to make Yuuki "cute" or "moe"-- and don't think that just because he's a boy that he couldn't have gone that direction.

The only good episodes was the first and the last one. The rest of the anime was most of the times slow pace and boring, the kid moments saved it. This should had been a movie not a 11 episodes. Would be impossible to keep us glue to the screen unless they made it an action movie.

I only give it 7/10 because of the end, the kid death hit me so hard. They were able to make it love that kid like son. If I ever have a son I hope he is like Yuuki! His death hit me hard but for 7 episodes I was always asking for the end to see what happen. I was hoping for their dad or mom to be dead, maybe is friend but not my Yuuki =/

Decent anime to watch if you have nothing better to watch.

This show was going fantastic until the double fake out of Yuuki's death, I actually had to google if the Mother and Daughter were dead because I thought that was just another delusion considering all the fake outs we were being handed. ghost was really dumb too, story came to screeching halt after he died. What did he even die from? The sun? they could have put a scene of him getting a cut or something so we could pass it as infection or something.

It was pretty obvious that he died of crush syndrome. Remember when he got hit by that piece of concrete when Tokyo Tower collapsed? That's when he received a blunt trauma.

Crush syndrome is basically why blunt force can be a lot more scary then a cut because depending on the force of the impact it leads to celular damage. And the damaged cells will release their contents into your body as toxins. Your cleaning organs like your liver and kidneys will try to filter that stuff out but depending on how large the hit was and therefore how many toxins are now in your blood stream - your liver and kidneys may not be able to cope. Which leads to your liver and kidneys shutting down - which in turn leads to multi-organ failure.

I still can't come to grips with Yuuki's death, tho probably not for the reason you might think it is.
There were entire city destroying earthquakes and Yuuki basically died due to illness... but it is due to the after effects of the damn earthquake so I guess it makes sense. He would've been fine if there was no earthquake I guess.
I liked the artstyle of this anime and how it didn't try to pander to any particular audience. This is the type of anime anyone could pick up and enjoy without being a veteran weeb which I like.

I think it was him dying from that lingering head injury they faked us out with. Thus Mirai's line about how he must have been in pain without complaining.

And in this episode, we see Mirai really come to terms with Yuuki's death.

I wasn't expecting this to happen. Its pretty rare for a show to kill off a main character. Yuuki died too damn young.

While, I think the last 4 episodes are pretty good, I can't say the same for the rest of the anime. I get what they were going for but honestly most of this show came off as bland to me. I wasn't invested in Mirai at all in this series, even though she has a lion's share of the attention, which is why this anime doesn't appeal to me. Still a pretty decent series, just one that only really got me paying attention to it in the final episodes.

It was definitely a head injury when he saved his sister from the Tokyo tower collapsing. He died from brain hemorrhage/internal bleeding when a piece of concrete from the collapsing tower landed on back of his head.

All the signs were there that yuuki died from a serious concussion. From loss of appetites, fever, vomiting, and fatigue. They even mentioned a 'bump on the head' and yuuki was momentarily unconscious after the Tokyo tower collapsed. I find it hard to believe he died from merely heat stroke whereas mirai and Mari weren't as affected by the heat. But the heat can exacerbate the head injury even more.

Honestly like only a few sad parts, yes including the ending but nowhere near I was expecting.

I was expecting people dying left and right.

Gave it a 4/10. I was going to give it a 2 since they cock teased Yuuki dying than brought him back.

Wooo boy. Not how I wanted this to end, but it is what it is. If Yuuki had died sometime before the earth quake happen, Mirai wouldn't have been fazed much I don't think. It sucks to say, but Yuuki's death really solidified her development as a person. I'm glad Mari came to visit her, and holy crap we got to see her all dressed up! But it looks like Mirai's family life has improved drastically, so that's a plus. Those scenes where Yuuki would appear and then be gone the next instant were so sad. I had tears when he started to fade away up on the bed, and then again during the ending montage of his life. God damn 7 year old is an inspiration to me.

What a great show. I love when shows throw your feelings around like a bag of sand. 9/10

Great ending, I'm not ashamed to admit tears were streaming nearly constantly throughout these last 2 eps.

I thought they hammed it up too much with shifting all the focus on Yuuki, but I'm not exactly complaining.

I was hoping Mirai's parents were also dead, and she would be adopted by Mari. Then she would've been the best big sister ever to Hina, having matured and learned not to take people for granted anymore.

I also skimmed through the digest movie and feel this would've worked just as well, if not better, as a 90-120 minute movie instead of a series.

7/10.

It made me cry but only at the last scene. Once over the entire series is pretty poor, especially with how far the show attempts to push emotional tragedy in different characters.

The animation overall was kind of lacking - it's not a style I enjoyed too much.

Yukki's death was way too drawn out, it made Mirai's realisation hit less hard, and the constant wondering of "is he"/"isn't he" from episode 7 to 9 was more annoying than developing.

All in all, still a solid watch - but it's not one that I'd go and revisit.
