Came in with zero expectations and surprisingly, was very satisfied by the end of it. Not much you can do with just 12 episodes, and I feel if the show kept its pacing and tone of the first four episodes, it'd just be a mindless smash-fest. I quite enjoyed the characters, even if most of them were one dimensional, especially the character growth of Swindler and Courier.

I'm a sucker for sappy and melodramatic endings, especially ones that have good endings.

8/10 for me.

RIP Swindler. Died swindling the entire city.

Courier went out like a badass using his metal arm to fire his railgun.

It had it ups and downs but I'm going to miss watching this show every week. 7/10

I loved its art and animation. It really had a solid starting. Fight scenes were top notch. But unfortunately after master executioner died in the first half, the fight scene and its intensity dropped considerably. Master executioner vs brawler was definitely the pick of this show. I wish other executioner had good fight scene with akudama but they all felt like weakling. Story wise it was still somewhat ok even in the second half, but ending was kind of rushed and some part in second half had ups and downs. They could have done more towards the end.
Character like courier and swindler character development was good. I wish they had survived, but every akudama died. I expected more from apprentice executioner, she felt like a poorly developed character. (I expected her to joined akudama or go crazy or something like that, but she maintained the status quo). Also the shark and bunny had potential but they couldn't reach the glory of monokuma (from danganronpa)
Overall nice addition by danganronpa creator ( but can't say its as good as danganronpa)

I LOVE the show it was fast pace and I think, it suited the show ( in my opinion) I watched it in dubbed. 9/10 I might change it to a 8/10 but yeah what a show 👌👏 (I wished it wasn't censored but oh well)

Learned a valuable lesson, never do a good deed by trying to return a dropped 500 yen coin as it will bring bad luck and a lot of chaos. Impressive how an ordinary girl managed to change the city, sad to the noble self-sacrifice of both Swindler and Courier.

This is what happened if a director only focus on visuals than story telling. What a poop anime.

This is definitely one of the more hidden gems out there, I absolutely loved how over-the-top and stylish this was. I agree that it kinda fell apart in the 2nd half, but over all it delivered what it was here to deliver *pun intended* I loved swindler and courier's characters and how they were focused on their goals until the end, going out with a bang. Their death's seriously hit hard. Great anime, but too painful to watch a second time. I definitely wouldn't complain if we get 2nd season though, but I doubt it would be as interesting without the original cast, the characters carried the show thoroughly. I am a sucker for happy endings, so that ending hit me hard. Didn't care about the Doctor's death though. She turned out to be a huge bitch.

wouldn't mind a 2nd season, if they bring back swindler and courier, teehee

8/10.

What an amazing way to represent the atrocities of the real world. A true Machiavellian idealistic. Love how they voiced these out as a dystopian world. Truly remarkable. Glad I binged this, rather it would have been painful to have to wait for it.

Honestly I just started this show due to its similar cast and character profiles as Psycho Pass.(Yeah I love Cutthroat because he's literally Makshima Shougo in his teens.) But this went beyond what I'd expect. Although it had many ways to develop the characters which left to be desired, it made up with its classy and quirky way of defining the truth of the world.
When someone asks me why I like anime, I'd say Just Because.

I should've watched it sooner!!!! Swindler lived up to her name and finally got that introduction-ish swindler introduction! She really swindled the whole city! That little child part was really hitting where it should hit!!! Also I love the way both swindler and courier have a befitting death. Dont get me wrong, its not that I liked that they were dead but they did have full filling lives. Also, I want to see a glimpse of the aftermath of the uprising as well as what happened to sister and brother. Truly a master piece in its own rights! 10/10

PS, I hope I would know what happened to the executioners apprentice as well as the whole executioners system.

A very good ending. Now, I'd really need some "hope" genre after this. The tragic ending for those characters was really heartbreaking for me and I'd at least need another season for what comes next after the twins or siblings went into some kind of facility that who knows what's in there and what will their life will become. I'd really love it if there's a 2nd season for it but if there's not... then I can't do anything about it, but maybe you who is reading this may be able to do something? Pskye!

Last note, they didn't get any real names but its okay, I guess...
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

This whole anime felt almost 100% predictable, except for the part where Swindler actually turns Akudama. Kind of what made the series for me.

I do think that they did everything they did in a very satisfying way. No pointless deaths in this one, though the constant ‘fixing up’ by doc was kind of annoying.

I’m sad the last remaining mains had to die though. While I could never see Swindler and Courier together, I do think that there was an equally satisfying ending where they survive. It’s fucking swindler, she can both die and survive without impacting the story too much.

btw this anime really are popular in 2020, everyone are getting hype when it comes
It's dissapointed because the ending wasn't made perfectly, the anime is rushed, but still they are good anime for me.. It has best fight scenes, good quality animation, great character design, the OP is Banger! Recommended for the beginner too.. Now its not as popular as it comes out, it gonna be a popular & underrated anime like Mob psycho 100, but this anime ending is little bit disappointed ︶︿︶

Holy heck, this show has both extreme strengths and weaknesses with no middle ground. Certainly a turn-off-your-brain, style over substance anime with flashy action sequences and over-the-top characters. I really enjoyed the whole Suicide Squad vibe of the show and its Danganronpa visuals. The first and final episodes were easily the most memorable bits, and the show is always best whenever Master, Brawler, or Courier take the stage. Characters were extremely two-dimensional and solely existed to bully poor government mooks, but at least Swindler got some decent character development towards the end.

Like most people said, the show lost its direction after the Brother and Sister escort during the second half. I think this show would have worked better as a movie that only focuses on the first half of the story. There were hints of a good story during the second half under its poor direction, I admit.

There were plenty of plot holes and stupidity right from the first episode, like when the cops were dilly-dallying on Cutthroat's execution or Swindler not paying for the takoyaki. By far the worst plot armor moment that irritated me though was the kitchen fight between Swindler and the thugs. Oh man, I haven't facepalmed that hard in a long time. Some of the character deaths also felt cheap, especially Cutthroat and Doctor's death. The latter's death was particularly bad because it felt so out of character for someone who's supposed to be the genius of the party.

Though I may be nitpicking too much, I can honestly say that I enjoyed this anime. A very mixed bag for sure, but I didn't regret watching it.

This show started as a silly entertainment and then turned into a big boring nonsense with a laughable social commentary but at least I could giggle to the little girl got a gun! the rain of Molotov cocktail! the police guy killing himself infront of the old lady executioner and those kids running like is the last day of school meanwhile they have stuff exploding behind and above them.
Hoping the executioner that killed Swindler got away from the mob.

ffs I tried viewing this as a whole new IP by Kodaka but this finale has definitely cemented Akudama Drive as an exciting remix of Danganronpa 2 but with the disappointing open-ending of Danganronpa 1 😔

His biggest strength is still his characters, all the Akudamas are very interesting though the Executioners leave a lot to be desired (just wtf happened to the 1-eyed Apprentice-turned-Master)

Best part of this show is definitely when the lines between Normal Citizens-Akudamas-Executioners are thrown out the window, information control is such a huge yet scary power

I just watched it n it has really left me feeling very vacant. I honestly didn't expect them all to die. Especially Swindler n Courier. I wish at least they hadn't died!🥺 The only person whose death didn't bother me at all was Doctor. She deserved being trampled on tbh.

I'm happy Brother n Sister got to escape safely but the price was really high. Hope the new region will be a happy one.

You should check the Blu-ray version of the finale. It has 5 or so extra minutes where it resolves that subplot. Sort of.

Thanks for the heads-up, just watched that part (that was the only new scene in the BD honestly (2 minutes), other 3 minutes are taken up by OP + ED + some new shots of Courier being the badass that he is

Well that was definitely a great conclusion to that subplot, the disappointing open ending still remains

according to anilist:
On May 28, 2021, a director's cut of the final episode was released which included approximately 5 minutes of new content.

I have no idea if what I watched was the original finale or if it was the director's cut. Does anybody know the differences and would like to share?

it's funny how no one these days can tell the difference between something being rushed, and something having fast pacing.

this episode was a 10/10, and the show is a low 9 or high 8/10.

it's an edgy action thriller with S tier world building and fantastic production that has a fully developed main character.

what else do you want?

it even has some symbolism and social commentary.

like get off my back this should have been the dream show. the one thing that should have impressed both casuals and critics.

but what happened?

the critics hate the surface, and the casuals don't see the background details, so it got stuck being a 7.5.

what a fucking shame.

*Rant Warning*

I loved the pretty visuals, fight and chase scenes, and the explosions. Those were very fun.

But Bleh, the writing was atrocious! Just everything about it. The riot... The propaganda show. The weird snuffy fan-service with the Doctor. The coin...( Omg!)
Thank God Swindler died. She was the most grating, whiny and brainless protagonist I've seen in anime. And all those hardened self-interested criminals died for her?

Swindler really fooled them at the end and managed to save the kids and give courier a hand even after death same thing with hacker. These 3 characters were amazing.

I must say that teared up with their deaths, this anime really teaches you that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover and that you must know their side of the story before hating the.and that karma will come back and stab you on the back.

I am so happy the siblings made it out alive.

To be honest, it really saddens me to see Swindler and Courier die, because they were the only ones who lived till the end to help those kids. I want them to live too... but right, it feels impossible because we can see Akudama starting to die one by one since Brawler died, in different ways but tend to be in accordance with things that are relating to them (even though because of blood loss but Brawler died when fighting, Cutthroat died being stabbed by his angel who had the 'biggest red halo' of his favorite, Hacker also died in Kanto, there was a cross behind Swindler when she was stabbed, presumably wanting to show that she was a pure and kind girl after all, etc).

Maybe I'm a bit slow in understanding, but I feel a lot of questions are left unanswered. In terms of craziness and wildness, Akudama Drive nailed it. I'll never forget the hide and seek scene between Cutthroat and Swindler lol. But a lot of things confused me.. and I didn't really like the ending either.

And what always makes me wonder every time they appear, who are those two yellow faces that are always talking to the Execution Boss?

Idk the ending was decent but I'm kinda sad that they all died, I kinda hoped I'd at least see swindler and courier both alive. But that ending HIT DIFF, GOD THE WAY THEY LIKE CUT THE ENDING N STUFF It left like that empty feeling YKKK.

The plot was mid n like a bit weirdly paced like how Kanto just turned out to be a some machine n how Hacker miraculously survived n just miraculously broke into it "w ease" but it was still really enjoyable!

Unbelievable immersive value from the events that unfolded here, not just in how emotionally gripping they were, but in how well this entire episode was directed and visualised to present them in the most effective manner possible. Good shit. I'm always concerned when it comes to cyberpunk that it will be used as a mere aesthetic and miss the entire purpose of the genre, but they clutched it out at the end. Kanto is still there and nothing has really changed long term, just a stick thrown in the spokes of the wheel, a small act of defiance against the system and an albeit temporary introduction of grand chaos.

Cyberpunk has always been a warning to us living today to not allow society to devolve to a point from which it is unrecoverable, where human life and dignity loses all its value and becomes nothing more than a commodity to be traded by the high and mighty, and we nothing more than tools to be used and discarded at their convenience. In a cyberpunk world you don't ever get to win in the end, that is the whole point. It's too late for any meaningful victory once you've ended up at that stage, and the most you get to do is spit in the face of the corpos before they stomp you out like a common cockroach.

This show was legit cyberpunk. 9/10
