I finally got around to NGNL and watched the whole show and the movie back to back. Holy crap the movie is overrated. The show was great, the characters were amazing and everything flowed nicely. But the movie sucks. The main character doesnt think and sends people to their death for no reason, we met Ivan for what, 5 seconds? and his death was supposed to have a major impact on the viewers and story because he had a daughter? Why send him to die? Why not send the other guy with no family? Then we meet Black-haired robot Shiro, who puts on a fake childish personality and after 3 minutes our main character proposes to her after hating her guts when he first saw her? We then get an hour of absolutely nothing. Then Fake shiro runs off after fake Sora nearly kills himself and she gets herself killed by Jibril (Fake shiro attacked first, she could have just ran and had a chance at survival. Jibril did nothing wrong and doesnt deserve the hate she gets in the other comments) and the movie ends in the most rushed final minute in movie history. All in all, why waste the increased budget and production value of a movie on what could have been summed up in just a 15 minute flashback in a regular episode? It didnt further the story at all, there is no new information, and Jibrils past as a murderer and literal head hunter is already mentioned and explained repeatedly and in depth in the show. Final thoughts: I found this boring, yes the last fight was sad, but it was just a story Teto told Izuna, the main characters were idiots who couldnt plan ahead which does not fit in with the NGNL series of how everything is thought hundreds of steps ahead and in the end adds nothing to the series.

Not bad (:

I give it a 7.5/10 but rounded down bc it wasn't TOO impressive imo.

Very dramatic and intense lol

Similar sentiments. It was certainly better than an average anime series film, but like users as ToG25 shared, the romance buildup was weak and failed to mesh completely well with the events to unfold in the falling action. Though I am TOTALLY ON BOARD WITH THE RELATIONSHIP. Even still, most of the slight comedic bits didn't flow well. It wasn't bad in my eyes, but not great either. An above average (if only slightly) film. I'd give it the same score (a 7.something rounded down into a 7 and not given a 6 because PROGRESSIVE ROMANCE).

Also, when the hell is a Season 2?

Romance felt so extremely forced and I found myself completely lost with more of the plot but still an enjoyable movie.

Seeing Schwi fight so hard to survive was painful to watch. Riku's breakdown at the end of the movie was also really good.

I need that season 2!

I am confuse about one thing. Was Tet created from Riku's imagination or Tet has always exist alongside with other Old Deus?
It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person.

The entire thing to me hinges on the relationship as it's a linchpin for the show considering everything is told through that lense. Unfortunately the set up for that relationship is the weakest and most rushed aspect of this show. Because of this most of the impact in the show (emotional or otherwise) is lost as the relationship is not compelling. Not the only problem I had with the show mind you, but the most glaring one. Settled on giving it a 3.

This was an amazing movie. Loved it, 8/10.

Schwi and Riku have similar characters designs as Shiro and Sora and them having the same VA got me a bit confused at first but I got used to it later on during the movie.

I loved seeing Schwi's and Riku's relationship grow. We got to see and learn about the world of NGNL.

The death of Schwi's had me tearing up and also Riku's death. :'(

Tet at the end giving humanity the name "Imanity".

I'm going to start reading the light novel of this.

Man I hate that I didn't watched this sooner!

Everything has already been said, so there is nothing else I could add. This movie was absolutely amazing. From the beginning to end. Had to hold back thug tears more than a few times. I really wished this was made into a 13 episode series. I would have love to see more of what the Ghost did with the other races, and how Couronne handle running the village. As well, how Schwi dealt with Riku being sick.

Overall a master piece to me. 10/10, but critically an easy 8/10.

Tbh I'm not entirely sure what I just watched. Is this really connected to the ngnl series? I don't even remember what year that show aired or when I watched it but it's been a while for sure. Anyway, I would have liked this more if it was a series rather than just a movie cause everything went by so fast and I'm confused af. Still, it was visually impressive as it usually goes with anime movies.

I have no clue why Digi-nee gave this film a 6/10. I really wanted to like this movie; but I couldn't. It was a spectacle in visuals, but everything else was bad:

1) The pacing: The film starting off with a who-cares character that had 0 good screen time, dying, followed by an emotional scene with Riku, I couldn't care less about. 30 minutes into the film I think, not much happened. Then, the 2nd half of the film hits, and it feels too fast. Important plot points, were explained so fast, that near the end of the movie, I had no clue wtf was going on.

2) Tells more than it shows: the 2nd half is montage; rather than showing us in-depth how the characters try to end the war, the film shows a glimpse of that through Riku's conversation with the Elf, then from that point on, it's mostly a montage of the characters trying to end the war. We don't get to learn anything about the races; we don't even see the dwarfs.

I also noticed more flaws after reading the review of this film by @Aidan, was how is it that Riku was driven by rage and vengeance, yet quickly forgave Schwi, who destroyed his home town? How was Schwi, an AI that is only capable of rational thought, able to think about the human heart, and want to figure it out, something so irrational? How did Riku become the leader of the group of humans? I didn't even realize there was a one year timeskip until Aidan mentioned it in their review.

I much prefer No Game No Life the tv series: yes, it's a self-indulgent, ecchi, anime, but that's fine; it embraces it's silly nature, to make a much more coherent and entertaining story, than No Game No Life Zero.

@Antearion

I agree that this should've been a tv series; there was so much that could've been explored that the film didn't explore, and so so much was crammed in.

I appreciate that in the movie, the main characters suffer serious consequences. In the anime, I hardly felt tension especially in the beginning. But the anime and the movie strengths and weaknesses. The movie implies that Sora, Shiro and Stephanie are reincarnations of Riku, Shuvi, and Corone where they continue there where their previous lives wasn't able to succeed but unfortunately since the designs are very similar...they could be just an interpretation of Tet of the events. Also, I like the movie is darker than the main series and the romance is more obvious. It was a backstory that really needed this franchise. 7/10 for the movie.

good movie, what wouldve made it a better movie is if they announced a continuation to the series at the end. welp thats just my hopeful thinking.

thankfully i saved this movie for later to wash down on a bad series i recently watched. it did well as a standalone movie, and id rather leave it at that than overthinking. the final battle was way too rushed IMHO, they made a great emotional roller coaster after both battles.

cheers to more wishful thinking and hoping for more to come later on. we still have like half the other races to explore for more herps and derps...

There's a lot I like about this movie, but..... I can already hear the reply before I dare say it:

"oh well she's really a robot who is part of a hivemind so she's not technically a child so it's okay-"

yeah uh I really don't care, she's a literal robo-recolor of an 11-year old who introduces herself using the little-sister fetish and keeps trying to bone a guy who is likewise a recolor of her recolor's brother . The squick is so real on so many levels and it's one of several issues that distracts from a lovingly animated and directed movie.

I wish that the artist behind this franchise would team up with a different writer on a new IP, preferably one that doesn't wear it's incest fetish on its sleeve.

Beautiful to see Schwi and Riku teach each other about the feelings of the heart yet also sad to see their self sacrifice in order to stop the war. I can see why Tet isekaied Sora and Shiro of all people to continue the game.

It was a great movie. The soundtrack of this movie was just wonderful, it made the scenes have more impact and emotion. Jibril and Schwi's battle was very well done and very good, I have nothing to criticize in this battle. This film was also very interesting, because through it, we were able to learn about the past of that world and what people had to go through at that time.

I remember watching the original series last year, starting of last year. So took me a while coming on and then watching this movie which i wasn't aware of not too long ago. But still finally came around, and i must say as much as i love the series, this movie got me confused too much. For the major part of it i wasn't aware what the actual thing was going on, but since it's a prequel it doesn't affect the original storyline thankfully.

So just for the sake of NGNL, will give a 5/10. Also watching the main crew in the end, again triggered the pain of not having a season 2 till now.

I think the biggest problem in this movie is how unenjoyable most of it actually is, you put in the lore, character development but theres basically anything interesting going on, by the time we actually reach the action part, I don't think I'm interested that much anymore.

It almost felt like this was a backstory and not something I expected when I decided to watch this. Whole thing just felt like I haven't watched No game No life in general but the problem is I did and still was confused on some parts for some reason.

This movie could've had something great going on in it but in the end didn't felt awesome because of animation quality that for some reason felt like regular anime series kind when most of anime movies always have obviously improved quality over regular series and different color scheme than we are used to seeing in the original series. How did studio like Madhouse didn't deliver on this thing I don't even know.

Its a 6.8/10 for me, really can't go and give any more than that for obvious reasons mentioned above, sorry to all the fans who will be reading this post and not liking it, but its just how I see it when it comes to anime movies based on main series in general.

I have to admit that this movie made me want to see season 2 a tiny bit more than before. But despite it movie was not the greatest, my favorite part was actually the love story of Riku and Schwi as a non human, but movie as a storyline got me really bored at the end. After all nice insight of history of Elkia :)

Not really a fan of this prequel. Too many melodramas I couldn't relate to, and as for the plot, it wasn't too interesting, mainly because it lacked world-building. It kept bombarding me with lots of information about gods, races, and wars, and it felt like I was missing out on another prequel before this to the point where I got bored by the latter half.
At least the fights and animation looked great, especially the Jibril vs. Schwi fight. Man, Jibril is so hot!
I wish Couronne were the main heroine, or at least Schwi had a more grown-up body. I'm not really a fan of lolis. 6/10

The visual effects for 2017 is LEGENDAY!!!  (could compete with one piece movies for fighting scenes)

Schwi audibly transforming into Shiro in real time was absolutely magical.

I think this movie singlehandedly made me love-hate Jibril, lmao. I regret wondering when she'd finally show up and it had to be right after Schwi leaves Riku's side. Izuna's speaking on behalf of me here:

If a 2017 movie budget was already this good, can you imagine what'd be possible in 2024? Or hell if we want to go full copium, just think if Madhouse got their Frieren guys to finally kill the "where ngnl s2" meme.

Looking back again: man the production value of this thing was so PEAK.
Sadly they only had 1 movie. In the 100 minutes running time they certainly couldn't tell everything more properly.
But even without that it made such a spectacle that wasn't just entertaining as hell, but also so memorable.

The novel did slowly go down in quality on and on after this vol. Tho the main problem wasn't that;
Main issue was the jokes got even more and more ecchi than it already was, which made pushing it to TV broadcast at the time hard. Even more so in an era of fake social correctness like the one we live in, now.

This thing was released 2017, BD... 2018 was it (at least: when most people who would have watched pirated version would watch.)
God knows how many great games and stories of today were cooked in inspiration of this, despite some of these noisy MAL people's complain.
Hell, Dune got a reboot (which, if I want to be fair, comparing this, a work inspired from Dune partly, and those new adaptation, tbh I like this one better, much better. Simpler, but more powerful and more gut punching.)

How much did this movie, unknowingly to most people, change the world, change our civilization. and it's just a random sequel to an anime series that was made to stay afloat as a brand name for like 2-3 years.
