This anime proves that.. If Mahou Shoujo is not trying to be like Precure where it's all happy sunshine it's being dark and edgy. But this is a special type of dark and edgy.. it's really trying so hard to make us feel bad for her. The main girl being abused by almost everyone because reasons... I really don't get this... Will it get any better? Kinda doubt it but I'll give it two more episodes.

So, this show is absolute garbage and there are several leaps of logic I have issues with. Compared to something like Mahouka or Wixoss, which knew how to write a show like this with believable situations and characters, this show just decided to torment a single character with an exaggeration of bullying that is just completely absurd, so let's go down the list:

-This girl has no less than six sociopaths shit heads tormenting her. Five of which who are targeting her specifically, and one of which is a an adult and a teacher who should know better.

-Even sociopaths aren't actually all evil, and a lot of them know better than to torture people constantly for fun.

-Why would you lay on the bathroom floor for your bullies to step on you without resisting at all?

-Better yet, would you actually go into the bathroom with them in the first place when you know what their intentions are?

-If you have a lock on your bedroom door, why would you not lock your door after dinner every night so your asshole abusive brother couldn't actually come in your room and fuck your shit up?

-The bullies actually bought very pristine, brand new razors and tacs to fill her shoe locker with. And they bought a lot of them. And the main character doesn't realize to look inside of her fucking locker before she reaches in there, despite implying this bullying has been constant in her life, and this isn't just one day of utter hell for her.

-Can someone please explain to how said bullies and the girls brother managed to not accidentally kill our Universal Punching Bag™ via drowning or suffocation?

-Even if she wasn't dead, would her brother suffocation her in that manner not have made her cripple and given her permanent brain damage, as seen in Fate/Zero?

-How did asshole rapist manage to find the UPB™ after she was hidden in the cars despite her only making the slightest of sounds after they left?

Holy shit that got dark fast.

Hate:
Brother, you are supposed to protect your sister.
Parents, obviously they are overlooking the abuse. (I thought maybe Aya has a shit family, but dang...)
Teacher, wtf you could see the crap on her desk...

Those bitch bullies called in a dude to RAPE her?! WTF!!

I was raging almost the entire episode hoping for someone to stand up for her. NEVER happened.

Again this is not that unreal. Some of the things the girls do to her might not happen IRL that much (like the shoving her head in the latrine), but everything else is very very easy to happen.

The parents were clueless and the father only had eyes to his "great son", they never pay attention to the girl, although this seems unreal it does happen IRL too.

The brother does everything late at night when the parents are sleeping it seems.
As for the others, did you see anyone around when she was getting bullied? There was no one ever because that's how bullies do their "job".

The police or the school doesn't know and the teacher is a piece of shit who doesn't care about his students. There haven been many news about how teachers doesn't do much against bullying in japan this is not strange at all.

Students are not going to help her ever. Is modern Japan (like you said)where no one wants to confront others. Japanese people prefer to endure things in silence than confront others. You should know this already.

I don't know how can you say that it's public abuse when it's clear no one knows. Only other students know and they will NOT interfere at all.

Don't worry, people will complain about this show just because of how dark it is tbh. Nevermind the good animation and the fact that the plot seems interesting so far. If a show is dark, people will automatically flock to calling it 'edgy' and thus refer to it as bad.

Guess someone never watch Fate Zero lolz..
It's a dark series done right.
Also I enjoy the mind-fuck in Madoka Magica, both are 10/10 in my book.

Audience doesn't need to watch excessive torture porn + over the top abuse to feel bad for the mc yknow.
Like I said before, instead of feeling bad for the mc, I actually start bursting out laughter because the trend becomes too predictable in this ep1 because of how try-hard this show is. It's like those over the top drama cliche love story that starts making people laugh.
When the author tries too hard and you can see it, it becomes unintentional comedy.

RE: Zero has its fault, but the tension is build up properly before leading to the torture part, and there are the light-hearted part along with the heavy part that they balance out so audience can feel the unease when the dark part comes. I can actually FEEL for Subaru because of that.

You can't just toss in every terrible things you can think of into one place , merge them together and just call it a day.

That's quite surprising. I just checked Kotoura-san's first episode's rating. Way less interesting plot-wise and honestly, without spoilering much the beginning scenes are almost the same yet it has an above average good rating. I'm sure that people haven't rated Elfen Lied's first ep this bad either. Weird

Dude you are being just plain dumb.

Do you think the girl is being invited to the bathroom? The girl has no choice she has to follow the bullies to the bathroom and stay on the floor. Didn't you see what they did to her when she said "stop"? She is not strong to fight back so she has to obey them otherwise she will be punished even harder.

She can lock the door, but her brother will have a time alone with her at home and he clearly showed that he will punish her more for locking the door. She is just afraid of him.

Do you think human die that easily? It's very easy to abuse her without killing her. She is not get any brain damage for getting strangled a little. Usually injuries begin at the one-minute mark, steadily worsening, but it does depend on each people.

C'mon dude. It was at least easy to go check her in near the cars and they might have seen her legs from afar. He saying that he was going away was just pretense.

As for the rest, i already made a post, but repost some points here.

You CLEARLY don't know how bullying goes in Japan. You seem to think the bullies will come and talk to her and leave if she says no or something like that.

Read just this one news here...https://www.economist.com/news/asia/21720643-evacuees-fukushima-are-latest-suffer-torment-class-why-bullying-japanese-schools

Quotes if you don't want to go to the site...

FIVE months after the tsunami that led to his family’s evacuation from Fukushima, the boy enrolled at a new school in Yokohama. His new classmates were pitiless. They called him “germ boy”. They stole his things. They punched and kicked him and threw him down the stairs; they took him to a “study” room and beat him some more. He was eight years old.

The abuse went on for nearly three years before the bullies added extortion. In 2014 they told the boy to hand over any compensation his family may have received after their evacuation. His parents were in fact not eligible for any recompense, but relatives had lent them ¥1.5m ($13,000). They kept it in cash at home, fearful that they would again lose access to bank accounts. The boy gave all the money to his classmates. After the cash ran out he stopped going to school altogether.

According to Mitsuru Taki of the Ministry of Education...In Japan most cases (of bulying) involve a big portion of a class inflicting insistent psychological (and occasionally physical) torment on a single victim. “Bullies in Japan are not rotten apples,” he says. “It is a group phenomenon.”

Teachers rarely help. They are renowned for their pedagogical prowess, especially in maths. But most are not trained to spot bullying. There are few incentives to notice or deal with it, notes Kanae Doi of Human Rights Watch (HRW). Teachers who do not achieve harmony, she says, are seen as poor performers. One survey suggests that around 12% of teachers have taken part in bullying. A quarter of high schools allow corporal punishment.

Bullies are rarely punished: in 2014 there were 188,057 reported cases and just two suspensions.

In the case of the boy from Fukushima the boy in the first quote i did), the school board in Yokohama for months tried to blame him for what had happened, suggesting he had handed over his family’s savings voluntarily, before changing its mind after much public criticism.

And help won't come. Even when the parents of the bullied student go seek a resolution with the school principal it won't do much. Most of the time the principal will try to swept things under the rug to not harm the school prestige. The bullied student won't have anyone to turn to in school.

A. Ok, they said, "Let's see how long she can hold her breath." Implying they kept her head under the water until she stopped moving. So who exactly removed the water from her lungs after she nearly drowned to death? I'm willing to bet none of them actually gave her CPR so she could breath again.

B. The scene showed him strangling her into unconsciousness. That is twice in the same day this girl was denied oxygen to her brain. Not to mention she would have actually had to start breathing again after he stopped, and even after she passed out, it didn't look like he was letting his hand off her throat.

I assume most people who DIDN'T want to kill their victim would usually see the person starting to lose it and lay off. He did not.

I've seen all those ones you talked about, but your point doesn't stand for me. The kinds of abuse the MC has gone through has happened to real people before. But, if it's not your thing, it's not your thing. There are examples other people have posted before in this forum of abuse like this in Japan. For the first episode, I feel like it did very well in portraying what the MC has gone through, and none of it was too absurd for me.

The mangaka has a hard on for bullying. In his other manga there is a girl who is bullied also. Anyway, I have a kind of hate love relationship with both this manga and his other manga Magical Girl Apocalypse. Wish they had of adapted Magical Girl Apocalypse instead of this though, at least it has my favourite character... Pervert cop, Akuta Rintaro.

Honestly this episode was pretty depressing but the ending on the other hand was pretty interesting.
I already expected a dark setting but this was rather severe.
Intense bullying and a mentally insane brother and a father who puts to much pressure on his children not to mention a crap teacher who doesn't pay attention to his students.
That teacher didn't even seem to care that one of his students died.

And the main just seemed to be enduring not taking any action at all.

You pretty much said what I was going to say like the dark theme was expected but that dark? I don't think that anyone saw that much darkness coming.
I think this will be the next anime to change the look of a mahou shojou anime like madoka magica did but in a better way..........hopefully

For all the people here (there is a lot) saying that the bullying is too over the top and unreal, guys you NEED to read more news and less manga.

Read just this one news here...https://www.economist.com/news/asia/21720643-evacuees-fukushima-are-latest-suffer-torment-class-why-bullying-japanese-schools

I'll quote this to those who are too lazy to click on the link...

The boy gave all the money to his classmates. After the cash ran out he stopped going to school altogether.

The boy was beaten repeatedly, they stole his things, threw him down the stairs and made him give them a lot of his family money. This was a REAL bullying.

Another important quotes...

According to Mitsuru Taki of the Ministry of Education...In Japan most cases (of bulying) involve a big portion of a class inflicting insistent psychological (and occasionally physical) torment on a single victim. “Bullies in Japan are not rotten apples,” he says. “It is a group phenomenon.

See? The anime is not portraying something totally unreal that never happens, instead those things happen all the time (maybe not all of them to the same person) in Japan. Bullying even happen with adults against other adults there.

And help won't come. Even when the parents of the bullied student go seek a resolution with the school principal it won't do much. Most of the time the principal will try to put things under the rug to not harm the school prestige.

You can hate this anime all you want, but saying that the bullying is unreal is stupid and it pisses me off to know that people here and SO clueless like this (although it doesn't surprise me).

@Jhon_Bacon yeah the Junko Furuta case is way too cruel and it doesn't need to be an anime, but it shows how the bullying can be much much worse than what this anime is showing.

Jesus, dude, calm the fuck down.
I'm not saying bullying like this doesn't exist, I'm saying that it's pretty unrealistic for this to happen to this one girl on top of her brother beating the shit out of her before us as an audience are given context and allowed to development investment in her- plus you can't deny that scene with the AMOUNT of razor blades in her shoes was funny. There was at least 100. And a bully straight up killing a cat? Why was she alone under that bridge in the first place??? It makes no sense lmao.

The brother bullying is really too much, but i don't see how it makes the rest unreal. Also she is the weak type of girl which is the easiest target for bullying.

There wasn't 100 razor there, if you also include the tacks then yeah, but there a few dozen razor blades there at best. I can't say much about this razor blade thing cause i never seen someone do it IRL. I've seen it in anime a lot which makes me think that in Japan people do or did that enough that everyone knows about it.

If person is bad enough to hunt someone down non stop and make their life miserable then it's not unthinkable that thte person could kill an animal.

I know people who don't like dogs and cats and they would hurt or kill then for no reason whatsoever. (i don't know if they still do it, i hope they don't)

The cat had no home and the girl was treating it there cause she couldn't take to her house. How that makes no sense, c'mon how old are you? It makes perfectly sense...if you put food for a cat in a certain place he may stay there to receive more food, specially if it's a small cat who won't walk long distances. Have you EVER treated a cat? Well i have treated many and i can talk about this with property.

I read your posts and they were clueless like the posts of the other people.

I despise woke people.

This anime is crap it doesnt have good plots and good characters. All i see is that its full on edgy shit, with mediocre story. If this anime doesnt improves its plot, then it will just be useless to watch. unless if you just love edgy with no story then thats your shit, rather watch horror movies cause there the same senseless edgy content with no good story whatsoever.

This is actually so stupidly bad that it's entertaining to watch.

Bloody love how little fucks her teacher gives about everything

What is this...???? like they tried hard to cram every possible trash of society in one episode.. severe school bullying, attempted rape, psychopath brother, killing of innocent cat (WTF). Show really begs for attention eh? All are terrible, but I'm most severely disturbed by the brother. Home should be a place where people can find peace and safety.

I'm not the target audience for this show.... wasted 20 minutes of my life watching this. ---- DROPPED LIKE A ROCK.

Yeah, true. Cats would stay in places where you give them food. I feed strays in our neighborhood and there's at least 3 locations where a few cats gather because I put catfood there. I am also aware that not all people like dog and cat.. and I'm thankful that those cats and one dog that I feed still survive.

So where's Kizuna Ai's character?

MAL cast list stated she will voice Hachi.
So I guess she only will appear half of the season. (Episode 5 or 6 most likely)

Its great, i like the chara design, this firat episode and the MC personality, sometimes she really make me triggered with how innocent/ good person she is.
But some people find this episode really brutal because they places all possible psychopath in one episode to messing her up.
I really love the comback when those punks get what they deserve.

For all the people here (there is a lot) saying that the bullying is too over the top and unreal, guys you NEED to read more news and less manga.

Read just this one news here...https://www.economist.com/news/asia/21720643-evacuees-fukushima-are-latest-suffer-torment-class-why-bullying-japanese-schools

I'll quote this to those who are too lazy to click on the link...

In the case of the boy from Fukushima (the boy in the first quote i did), the school board in Yokohama for months tried to blame him for what had happened, suggesting he had handed over his family’s savings voluntarily, before changing its mind after much public criticism.

Really good informative post. People should read this, this level bullying is happen and exist, im not even surprised because i already know, and my older sister did got bullied.

Do not overestimate humanity.

And you just know that the hole anime is shit and doesn't have "good characters" because of one episode? Come on, at least give them a chance to develop - no anime develops perfect characters in one single episode and the plot of this anime hasn't even kicked in yet.
So if you haven't read the manga, you shouldn't be this harsh after the first ep ^^'

After reading 2 volumes of the manga, it seems like they adapted the first 2 chapters of the manga.

Some dark shit in this first episode. They left out Kaname's creepy fucking text from the beginning... good lol. Though the manga version of Kaname definitely seems like more of a sadistic asshole. In the manga, we even have that little extra scene after she leaves for school after staying in her room all night, and Kaname is like "wait for me sis so I can punch you."

Also, I could be wrong, but in the manga they make it seem like Sarina killed the cat, because she knows it's dead. But in the anime they show Erika spying on Aya, and she says she did it. But Erika is still there when Shouta finds her by the car in the manga, and thus, still dies when she gets transported to the train tracks. But when watching the anime, I was happy Erika died because she killed the kitty :(

Also, why are there sperm in the ED? Lol

I have read Mahou Shoujo of the End and sort of want to play the game of “which zombie Mahou Shoujo matches with the Site cast!”. In short, I am used to his crazy works and the guro, so at least the anime kept its ducked up touches.

I knew this is going to be edgy and Aya is not prepared for a pretty big role as a magical girl with a pretty cute gun. I went like “SHOOT THEM BITCH!!!” because holy crap they do not deserve to live! Aya’s brother is the worst too and the family seems to not even care about their baby girl...

I like the pupil effects on Aya’s eyes... Just sayin.

That was really depressing to watch!!!
I'm not sure this level of bullying even exist, but based on the plot it was mad intense, a different side to the usual Mahou shoujo, i loved it!!!
Funny thing is that she even get bullied at home by her brother, that was sick, i didn't see that coming......she has the worst parents ever.
At the point where the girl and the guy died, i felt like they deserved it.
I hope they keep this up.
