Great characterization so far, interesting things happened and very nice visuals. Also I liked that the show doesn’t treat you as some kind of brain-dead person and basically throws you in the middle of the plot without really explaining anything…
Though I was confused at some time…

WOW. Stunning art, animation, and music. Very refreshing. I can't wait to see more of this anime, a masterpiece in the making.

Even better than I could have imagined. So far it's all done very tastefully, but expected no less from noitamina. Top of my list already.

And to refresh everyone's minds: Keep that double posting and sub-begging to a minimum. Lag is not an excuse, especially not when your messages are completely different in content.

I'm very surprised I was able to follow this, especially since it's pretty confusing to figure some of the stuff out.

I LOVE the art style to this alot. This was a pretty good first episode.

Wow, the animation and music were quire beautiful.

It's also pretty rare to see an anime dealing with this topic in such a mature way. I've heard great things about the manga, so here's to hoping the anime lives up to it!

Thank God I'm not the only one who was confused throughout this episode.

I had a hard time keeping track of which character was a boy and which was a girl since the character designs make them look really similar. I'm sure over time it won't be a problem, but right now it's confusing.

This actually wasn't as bad a first episode as I thought it would be. Do the boy and girl main characters want to actually be gender reversed, or do they just like dressing as the other gender? (That's a rhetorical question, by the way) I'm sure things like that will be answered later on.

For a while I was confused who was who, and then I realized oh right, crossdressers. But the concept was handled pretty well.

THIS is why I love AIC. Just the animation, while having a few still moments, was just really really good.

Furthermore I loved this story. The characters are believable and already we can understand there is a depth to them and their insecurities. I think we can safely expect this show to be a high quality slice of life with a message on the sociological implications of gender in middle school students.

By far, this was the best opening episode I've seen from Winter 2011. My only complaint is that they should have made character names clearer, but I think the characters and situations established are good.

My brain!! I'm tired and can't think clearly. Who is girl and who is boy??
And I think voice of this boy dressed like girl isn't very good. When he was crying I was thinking he had a hiccup.

I had slight issues with the genders. Anyways, this was a nice first episode, I think this is going to be pretty deep.

I think the average person should be able to figure out who is who by the end of this episode, since that's when the viewer is presented some of the obvious problems the boy goes through in his gender crisis.

Typically I would prefer that who is who is obvious after the first 8 minutes, but oh well. I think the message works.

I'm kind of disappointed, I don't think the anime will do it any justice in just eleven episodes :(
I'm still going to wach it though because I am in love with the manga ♥

My thoughts about this are completely neutral there is absolutely no other was i can describe this episode.
It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either.
There is a clear plot and the atmosphere was very relaxing the art wasn't to bad either.
They did approach the problems of the individuals in the story yet i expected them to do so more, but maybe that comes during the rest of the course of this Anime.
Besides it's a hard thing to portray those problems and feelings.

Such an amazing start, I loved this episode. The art, the sound and the characterizations are all really impessive and this is going to be deeper than what I first thought.
Claire de Lune was a nice choice for that scene~

Extremely confusing and peculiarly constructed first episode. It was sloooow too and I must admit I had a lot of difficulties to sympathize with the characters. I'm still perplexed but I guess I'll watch the second ep just to be sure if it's worth to pick up this one.

I had wanted to read the manga for the longest time, but when I found out there was going to be an anime adaptation, I decided to wait and watch it first, and I wasn't disappointed. I absolutely loved it.

I was expecting to be very confused, since it skipped ahead a bunch of volumes, but I actually wasn't confused by anything. Just a little unsure of the character relations and stuff.

I loved the part where he was wandering around the town as a girl. And I had a feeling that his sister would walk in on him in her clothes. xD Judging from her reaction, though, I'm guessing she already knew he dressed up in girl's clothes? Since she was more angry than surprised.

I love the art style for this too, and I can't believe I only just found out this is made by the same person who did Aoi Hana. No wonder they're so similar.

Also love the ED. I'm a fan of Rie Fu's music, love her mix of English and Japanese. I think her song fits well with this series.

This will most definitely end up being my favorite show of the season. Too bad it's only 11 episodes, why is it that the best shows are always so short. ;_;

Weak start, bad introduction, too many characters are shown in a short period of time so it's nearly impossible to remember their names, faces and how they're related to each other.

Not to mention that my sense of morals screamed when I saw
. I thought it's going to be a show about kids discovering their sexuality, but instead it looks like a show about adults encouraging kids to become crossdressers.

Ah, so the anime will be different from the manga after all. As far as I can remember, the children entered middle school only in volume six.

FML i guess i won't be reading the manga then. I held off on starting it because the anime was coming out, but it looks like that was the wrong choice.

Only 11 episodes, and if that's not bad enough they cut off a very necessary portion of the story. Other than those issues, I like it. The music is perfect and the animation is pretty good.

Having read over the thread and considered what was left out. Hourou Musuko will be one of those anime in which you have to read the manga to have a good idea what's going on. It doesn't help that what was left out was very important to character establishment and development.

it's not like that. you'll have to keep watching it,
she's being supportful, and encouraging a confused kid to become more self aware.

This show was fascinating. I really dont know how else to describe this. What a unique twist to a seemingly generic premise. Debussy's "Clair de lune" towards the end of the episode was a great a touch. It fit the mood incredibly well

As someone who's struggled with gender identity their whole life, I have a feeling this is going to hit home in several areas. Also, to everyone who's spouting "derp I can't tell who's a boy and who's a girl" that's kinda the point. Anyone and everyone should be treated to the deconstruction of gender as a social construct.

For the people who are rashly jumping into conclusions assuming that there will be BL in this - you're wrong. Not everyone who wishes to be, or everyone who dresses like a member of the opposite sex are sexually attracted to their own sex.

I didn't think it was that bad. I don't think it was too hard to follow at all, though me having read the manga probably doesn't help in this case. Anyways, I'm hoping it stays good! I have no clue how it's going to end with this 11 episode thing. Probably going to be one of those 'and life continued tralala the end' endings. Huuh.

Well anyways, I liked it. Hooray for curious slice of life animes!

Nice and tranquil with beautiful artwork and animation. It definitely has potential judging by this episode and its themes, but character development and overall emotional realism will be determinant of whether or not this is good.

Right of the bat, this anime isn't going to to give the manga justice
(specially since it's only 11 episodes and start volumes into the manga)
The first episode feels all over the place... and to be honest, I'm disappointed...
I'll still watch it,since I really love the manga, and I'm somewhat curious to how exactly the development in the anime is going to unfold, but yeah, so far, disappointed =/

-I dislike the main character's voice but I guess it fits a crossdressing guy.
-I facepalmed only once.
-I will continue watching, withstanding the shivers I get when he starts talking about wearing his sister's clothes.

IIRC they actually got kids their ages to do the voice acting instead of the usual group of 26-year old women. But yeah, I have to kind of agree with you. Where it worked for Hey Arnold, it's not doing as well for this. So far.

I'm really mad that they started during middle school. 11 episodes is not enough to cover this story though...

They made a lot of references to the manga, it would prove confusing to viewers who haven't read it. This first episode was basically a summary of everything before middle school. It was very pretty, though..

Hoping there was a reason to start the anime so late in the storyline. I wasn't disappointed, but it is kind of obvious that this was made for the fans of the manga.

Hoping they make things a little more clear as the show goes along.

But for a huge fan of the manga I'm happy happy happy. Though some of the voices didn't match how I thought some of the characters would sound like.

There are some differences from the manga, but I think this way is a little better.

I got to lol at him being caught, and Chiba throwing a tantrum. ~
