Wait, Shin's brother saved Lena! Shin's brother seemed like a really determined and nice man. His determination to see his brother made his death even harder to swallow. The Legion voices that Lena and Shin hear honestly gave me chills; their voices are really scary. The Legions are controlled by human minds.... The amount of physiological development in this episode is truly amazing.

What an intense episode. The legion reveal was so well done, especially how it affected lena.

THAT WAS INCREDIBLE! Very well done episode, action packed, information packed, feelings packed. The all in one package of an episode. I've been enjoying this show so much already, just waiting another week for the next episode is painful but man does it pay off.

Another week, another well-crafted episode of 86. Even when most of the episode is spent on providing us context and infodumps, they still manage to make it engageable and dynamic thanks to the great directing.

The Para-RAID scene with the black sheep reveal was awesome and thanks to it we finally get the context of why Shin broke so many handlers through the years and why his fellow 86 are considered lucky to be in his unit. Seriously, being Shin is literally suffering, not only he ears the voices far away, but even in his sleep he is plagued by them.

And then we had that scene at the end... first they give us Lena's portrayal of Rei, as it shows him to be a good and respectable brother, and then in the final scene we got a tease of Rei's and Shin's relationship. That transition when he takes out his scarf to being choked was so well-done, that it followed by that creepy and foreboding smile of Shin, were my favourites part of the episode.

Finally, based A1 for teasing us fans in the first half lol.

Very good adaptation so far. Lena is the cute heroine who's doomed to suffer.

@Lelouch0202 The studio is giving 11 eps for Vol 1 which is very rare to happen, and I'm sure the answers will be revealed in good way. They are not rushing to give pieces of information to anime-only viewers.

But if you are curious to know fast...

Wow, what an episode! The direction was again superb; the music in every scene fit the mood so well; the explanation of the Legion was actually easy to follow despite how detailed it was; everything in this episode was so well done. I really love where this is going!

And that after credits was shocking. I wonder what happened there...

So that's why they hinted that scarf was hiding something in Shin's neck, interesting.

I see why every other handler has quit, that actually hurts to hear. When Lena was back in her room and heard the voices, then Kaie grabbed out to her... Wow, straight chills. Speaking of chills, Shin's final scene with the mirror was also really good.

Shin backstory coming soon?

It was a very good episode and the reveal was great. I liked Milize's reaction, didn't think she'd call them that night. Shinei's red eyes were looking really charming at the post credits scene.

This season only covers one volume and there's over 5 to adapt. I question whether the studio will go that far for this series, regardless of how good it is. For now, I wonder how much of this discovery Lena will report to the Republic and if they'll believe her. If not the Republic, then she should at least tell her friend or uncle why the previous Handlers quit so early. As far as breaking Handlers goes, I don't know why Shin's comrades made it seem like he could control it. That is, unless they were referring to some other method. As far as I could tell, these were the voices that weren't revealed first episode when the previous Handler was panicking in, what seemed like, silence.

Isn't a shitty security if everyone can hear the voices? You make a hive-like connection, and whatever happens, happens?

Well even though he cannot control it, he could force it. Like attacking a legion force with black sheeps in it, also he warned Lena to not to link, also he cut the link after he noticed that it's too much for Lena. I'm quite positive he didn't warn his previous handlers, or cut the link as fast as with Lena.

That episode was great. A bit more pace to it than the previous episodes with quite some material covered in the first volume (but still can fit the whole volume in 1 season at the same time), compared to the previous episode but the way the Para-RAID scene was handled was pretty awesome and terrifying if you were in Lena's shoes, with the static effect for the 'voices' being quite a lot to take in when hearing them. Explores more of Shinei's character that way in the process and why he's such a cold character in general without much of an optimistic view in sight. Pretty damn good stuff overall as Lena continues to learn about the horrors of their reality more and more with each passing episode, breaking the facade of a peaceful Republic that they seem to live in on the inside Districts.

Studio may have overdid it there considering the two never met each other, so Lena shouldn't really have a mental image of how Kaie looked like. Sure, one could say the Para-RAID may be capable of transferring Shin's image of her to anyone listening in or something, but then it becomes a question of why only Shin. Not sure if the source material wrote this in as well, but it best be explained if so.

Makes sense when you put it that way. Then, we have to take into account that he never explained the cause of Handlers quitting or going suicidal when he was questioned. Well, can't say they'd believe him anyway or whether it's something that can be fixed. I can at least see why it's limited to Spearhead. If every squadron could hear it, I imagine there'd be far more casualties.

Btw you can increase or decrease the para raid’s sync rate. Imagine if lena was at max sync rate? Her brain would be possibly fried.

Geezus christ! This show continues to transcend. The utilization of anime-original content really enhances the story and its components overall, and I'd dare say it can become much better than its very source material if it continues to click like this. The pacing was slightly quicker this time around, though not that noticeable, tbh. The CG fights were really well done, and I don't usually say that nowadays; though of course the anime isn't necessarily something very action-oriented.
The visual direction continues to look amazing and the exposition comes in slowly and steadily. The segment with Lena being mentally shook over hearing the voices of the Black Sheep through her PARA-raid was pretty terrifying, and I can only imagine how traumatized I'd be in her shoes. Really some befitting poetry here when you consider how the Legion is evolving with each battle while the Republic is devolving at the same time.

On another note, Lena's relationship with Shin is a nice one to observe (Lena running into a couple exhibiting public display of affection wasn't by coincidence, mind you). The fact that Shourei, Shin's brother, is connected to both of them one way or another has much meaning to them, which will be, ofc, revealed later down the stretch.

True. I do remember her friend mentioning the ability to also sync visuals. If side effects were more common, you'd think they'd install a safety feature to automatically shut it off whenever it detected an anomaly with the user. It really is just Spearhead's squadron.

You are right. Annette mentioned that. You don’t usually sync at high rates or use visual syncing precisely to avoid the risks of para-raid, so rarely does any handler use the higher sync rates, and as long as it’s low sync, you should be alright. Shin’s case is different and a peculiarity among all processors. Even at low sync rates with that much black sheep around shin and up close, she can hear the voices clearly. It was no more rustling. We see how the voices transition from rustling to clear voices. She’s lucky it was low sync and she can only hear them as regular incessant voices. To shin, the legion’s voices would probably be much louder and reverberating more intensely. She wouldn’t actually hear them if it were anyone else beside shin. only shin has the ability to hear the voices of the dead that are now residing in the legion. The rest of the squad hears them through shin but are more used to them and have seen so much shit in their lives that it doesn’t affect as much as lena but it still a bit taxing on them from their expression. She will have to get used to it like the rest of the squad. It is not a matter of there being a problem in the para-raid (as annette said there was no malfunction or anomaly in para-raid from previous handlers who worked with shin) as much as this being a scary thing to experience for the first time.

Nah, I'm not spoiling, dude. But think this: Shin has never really talked with a Handler like this before, especially one of the opposite gender, and vice versa with Lena.

Wooo ... Strong episode. At first I thought the legion used some kind of psychological warfare, but I didn't expect the drones use brains of fallen soldiers. And that scar on Shinei neck. It looks like his head has been cut off and then reattached to his body.

Can we talk about the animation, visuals and sound of this episode? I'm in awe. What an excellent episode! I think the pacing felt a little faster than usual and I love to see it. The psychological elements of this episodes were nailed, I'm really impressed.

I'm really interested in Shin's personality and the development of his relationship with Lena and we're already seeing signs of that. The quiet and seemingly cold guy warming up to the major and spilling his secrets to her? Not something I expected to happen this early.
At the start of the episode Shin says that if he were to survive, he would have to find his brother and towards the end when he explains the Legion strategy of collecting brains, he implicitly says that his brother was possibly taken by the Legion as well, I liked that detail.

I think the direction was exceptionally good in this episode, but I'm still not over the art and the tone of the episode as a whole.

Always looking forward to more with 86.

This is getting trippy. Though, to be honest, until now I somehow didn't register the nature of the Legion. I thought it was an autonomous force of another country, not AI 'ala Skynet. The level of debauchery and incompetence of albinos in this situation is stretching my suspension of disbelief. Also, shame they were hinting at who is one of shepherds so blatantly. Could use some nuance there. Despite that, this show turned out to be a solid surprise od this season.

I kind of figured she wasn’t *actually* there, but i really liked the sentiment. It was more like a representation of how she felt personally responsible for her death, which is probably why they didn’t show her face and just the yelling voice.

Lena was really going through it this episode, hearing those voices in her head to such a crazy extent. I liked the backstory in the beginning with Lena and Shin's older brother, and damn that's a nasty scar on Shin's neck.

Para-raid can share the 5 basic senses. Like hearing and sight. Shin can hear these voices 24/7 for 0-24 hours. During an enemy attack when an enemy type called Black Sheep attacks it makes Shin hear these in an intensifyed rate and the Para-Raid shares these voices to everybody who is connected to Shin.

Finally some answers. Shin's life is even more of a trainwreck than I thought. This really does shine some light on that small conversation he had with Raiden at the ending of the first episode. I'm guessing his brother is possibly one of the non-damaged brains they've managed to salvage. What with his codename being a dullahan the ghost symblosim becomes even more on the nose. Clearly he and Shin had some major falling out at the end.

That said they didn't actually explain how Shin's near-death experience led to him being like this. It's like he glossed over it, understandably so, but I hope there's something more to it.

It's interesting that Shin has Giad ties and yet they were clearly living somewhat happily with Rai in the Republic, from what we can see in the ending shots of the past episode. It really makes one wonder when exactly the discrimantion against non-Alba's started.

Another week of Lena suffering, she just can't catch a break. Liked how everyone was genuinely surprised she still called after this and then proceeded like normal. Shows just how used to this they are.

Excellent episode. So many great character interactions and some much needed development for Shin. Now we know why he's so indifferent and detached to everything. The guy fucking hears shit all the time so it's no wonder. I didn't expect Legion to be this.... mysterious entity that's probably not even human?

Have to say though that the action scenes could do with a bit more clarity in their portrayal.

Respect the exposition in this show.

The shit with the Legion using human brains is crazy. All the previous exposition on Reaper not being able to properly bury his comrades makes so much sense now. Undertaker's life is fr a tragedy.

I'm seriously looking forward to see how him and Lena are going to try and combat the "inevitable" of the Republic losing the "war". ^^

definitely, I thought I was the only one who thought that . The cg and the sound design is good and all , but it is so hard to make sense of who is doing what . All I can is tell that the undertaker is kicking ass , not how , whose , when or what .

Yeah, the CGI is pretty smooth, but everything just happens too fast. Good thing is that action isn't the main focus of the anime, at least not yet, so it can be ignored.

But if and when there are some more important action scene, it definitely needs to be directed better.

Damn, that's quite the tragic past of Lena, even though I say tragic, she did seem to get over it quickly after Shin's brother taking care of her.

How many mental breakdown does Lena need to suffer, holy shit that was so creepy but so well executed. The psychological elements in this show so far are on point. I do admire Lena's determination facing everything head on, despite the warnings Shin had given her about the "black sheep". All these voices were so damn creepy and I honestly didn't think I would hear Kaie's voice as well.

Second half was pretty great, I love these moments where Lena and Shin are building on their relationship. They get along a lot better now.

Also the scenes transitioning into the ED, keep that up. I love small things like that a lot.

That scar on Shin's neck... No wonder he mentioned that he thinks he has died before. That head looked like it was cut clean off before... creepy yet intriguing, can't wait to see them cover that.

Woah didn't expect that straight System Shock development from the Legion but it's clear now the war won't end in 2 years. Plus the copy of Shin's brother is out there somewhere and likely as a commander tier enemy. The Republic is basically working against themselves by not letting the 86 bury the dead...

Maybe Shin really died once for real? But in that case just what brought him back? I imagine it will be covered later.

Meanwhile Lena gets bombarded with another mental breakdown...maybe she will get used to it. lol

Well, I've made it this far and I can say for certain that I do not care for this anime. The pacing is all over the place, the animation of the CGI portions is unattractive and clunky, and the characterization is jarring, cliched, and unconvincing.

Probably the worst aspect, though, is the handling of mature sociopolitical themes. In a competent piece, these would be approached with some kind of nuance. But here, the dialogue surrounding these issues is constructed of a series of preachy, prescriptive platitudes that feel like they were pulled right off of Twitter, rather than deep character dialogue borne of hard life experiences or complex internal struggles.

In other words, the writer of this story comes off like they have zero experience with issues they are trying to explore, particularly with regards to race and class differences. These topics tend to be avoided for a reason, and this story does nothing to buck the trend.

I'm not surprised to see this series doing well, though. It wouldn't be the first super-cringer to take off, like Shield Hero, Goblin Slayer, or Darling in the Franxx. All of these had the comment element of dealing with mature themes in a really hamfisted way, but having enough fanservice and wish fullfillment to keep anyone pulled in as long as they didn't try to think too hard. Wouldn't even be surprised to see 86 become AOTS.

Great episode with that revelation. The nature of Legion and the true state of the war. Shin explains how he knows the Legion attacks. Great use of visual storytelling this episode and exposition is nicely inplemented.

The first part is about Lena past being saved by Shourei, Shin brother.

The revolution is fast approaching. The fight this episode is good with nice action pieces and the first appearance of Black sheeps. And their true nature scared Lena. Its a great depiction of how uncomfortable and almost break her.

Overall this is the best episode of the series yet

No. Only Shin can hear the Legion. And when there is a "Black Sheep" near him, people who are syched with him are able to hear this aswell becasue the Para-Raid can share what you hear.

He hears basically anybody who got killed by the Legion and it managed to get the fallen brain mostly unharmed. This is important.

If you get blown to bits by a rocket and there's nothing left of you, you won't get absorbed by the Legion. Kaie (Kirschblüte) got beheaded and basically her brain is in good condition, that's why we heard her.

Now I see why the commander shot his friend in the head in the first episode. If his brain is scattered, the Legion won't be able to be use it.

I'm guessing his brother's brain was taken as well. Though I do wonder why his brother tried to kill him? Maybe he didn't and something else happened though they showed a scar on his neck after the flashback of his brother choking him... I don't think a scar like that would appear because of choking though.

The whole trippy noises of the dead and the scene of Milize losing it was pretty cool to watch. I like that they touch on the psychological aspects of it.

Interested in to see what'll happen next though I do wish we got to learn more about the other characters as well.

Small correction. Even if the brain is damaged/decayed post death (novel says decay only, but I guess you can use decay and damage interchangeably? Since damage could also mean degeneration in this context), it can still be used to give rise to black sheep among the legion. Only shepherd need a fresh unharmed/undamaged brain.
But you’re right 86 usually get blown to bits with nothing left of them (cause juggernauts armor is weak and legion have pretty strong firepower and armaments), so it’s not a usual occurrence to have a brain, let alone a good one.
