Amazing episode! That back story of Tsukishima and Tsurumi was really interesting. Even Sugimoto had a little part into their survival as well.

Sweet baby jesus! I'm not even sure how to start emotionally unpacking this episode. So much went on its hard to know where to even start. I'm not even going to try thinking about it and I'll wait and see what roles about next week. Most definitely an episode which helps cement this story as one of the best playing this year!

This was a stellar episode through and through.

It was really interesting to learn about Tsukishima's backstory and how tragic it was. Not just that, it also showcased how manipulative and cunning Tsurumi can be in order to make things go his way.

Whether if Igogusa was killed by Tsukishima's father or was alive and living well with her parents in Tokyo, we most likely will never know, which did surprise me, as I was expecting the flashback to confirm whether if she was dead or alive. Either way, it made for a compelling backstory and it does make this one of the best episodes of Golden Kamuy so far. =D

This is also another reason why I like Tsurumi as a character. He's a dirty bastard, but I can't help but enjoy his appearances in this story every time. ^_^

At the end of S2, Ogata shot both Asirpa's father and Sugimoto, Sugimoto survived due to the 7th Division and to get Asirpa from Kiro n Ogata back, he cooperates with the 7th rn cuz Asirpa wouldn't trust the 7th if only they went to get Asirpa from Kiroranke and Ogata's hands.

You know there is something that this anime isn't telling us about the real story of the Ainu whom were forced to transfer to Hokkaido was that Japan was also guilty of executing a lotta Ainu during the early 1900's.

Man, that Tsukishima was quite a manipulator/

insane episode, whenever the show gives us a wartime flashback it delivers, and it delivers in spades. tsurumi is such a terrifying character, he spends years and concocts meticulous schemes just to get the most devoted and trustworthy follower, a strong proponent of quality over quantity no doubt.
seeing sugimoto there as well, and vacating the sled with his buddy was heartbreaking and telling of the kind of guy he really is, and seeing that the title for next week contains his name and moniker can't help but make me get my hopes up for next week as well.
honestly, i wasn't really feeling the first two episodes of the season, they were fun but the combination of not really remembering all the plot threads and current situation and groups(i really need to rewatch the show), along with the stenka being amusing but not a highlight for me, kinda made me lose some hype, but this episode being one of the best in the series IMO definitely brought me back, can't wait for the rest of the season and to continue the series after that as well(going to the manga if i'll have to).

This episode was a punch to the gut... who knew Tsukishima had such a heart wrenching past?! After so much manipulation and so many lies Tsukishima and us as the audience, will never really know what happened to Igogusa or if she's dead or alive. Tsurumi is one of the most ethically and morally twisted characters yet there's a part of me that just can't hate him

It was also so sad to see the part where Sugimoto gave up saving his friend so that Tsukishima could be transported to the field hospital. Anything to do with his time in the army always breaks my heart!

Lt. Tsurumi is probably my favourite character of the series.

Even if everytrhing he said is a lie, and it probably is, he still saved Tsukishima's life. And even if he just did it to gain his loyalty, it's still a very badass move to be willing to do something like that for your plan.

This series keeps surprising me with how consistently good it is, and how they can make me care more for its characters with only half an episode of backstory than most series do in a whole season. Poor Tsukishima.

Igogusa is alive or dead? If Igogusa was dead, would Tsukishima desperately want to live and study German? The answer is no. Tsurumi wanted a puppet, went to the village, found the corpse and made the village find it. After many years, he told a soldier to tell Tsukishima the real story. Seeing that Tsukishima was still loyal and his puppet, even with the harsh truth, he decided to lie to increase Tsukishima's determination again, as it was possible that he would commit suicide and Tsurumi would lose his puppet.

Great back story. I really feel for Tsukishima. I really don't know whether to believe Tsurumi's story that she's actually alive in Tokyo given the look he gave at the end and that solider peaking into the tent while they were talking. We probably will never find out now that Tsukishima buried his past by throwing her hair into the ocean.

Fascinating backstory, this time focusing on Tsukishima, that helps us understand his loyalty to Tsurumi. What an unfortunately tragic story.

I like how we never really learn the truth about Igogusa's fate. I feel like that helps us as viewers relate more closely with Tsukishima. Is she actually still alive? Is she truly dead? At this point, that doesn't even matter anymore, which is most likely the mindset Tsukishima adopted as he decided to devote himself to Tsurumi. This show is so damn great.

Tsurumi is such a fascinating man, honestly. Being both manipulative and charismatic can be a really dangerous combination when it comes to people with such immense goals and poor Tsukishima ended up being another one of his "victims".
So in the end, it seems that Igogusa's fate will remain a mystery since it was already established that we, the viewers, can believe in Tsurumi only to a certain extent. Not that it matters anymore tho, Tsukishima has already found his resolve and will most likely remain by his Lieutenant's side until the day one of them dies.

Overall, it was another fantastic episode. I can easily say this series is at its best when it comes to handle backstories and Tsukishima's wasn't the exception here. While not the most charismatic of the cast, the episode still helped me see him in a different light and man, I really ended up feeling bad for the guy. Bad for him, for his past and for the way how he was played for nearly a decade. In this regard, Tsurumi is truly a bastard but despite that, I can't bring myself to hate him and that's simply another proof of just how well written his character is. Seriously, the man is just too complete for someone who is missing half of his brain lol

As always, looking forward to next episode.

We get to see Tsukishima showing more than just his usual strict and sometimes scary poker face. He's full of emotions with this backstory. Tsurumi starts weaving his threads.

It's indeed a great episode. We also get to see Asirpa's group at the start - dang, I missed Shiraishi's goofiness lol. I really love the narratives that this show presents. We get to hear about the displacement of indigenous tribes due to wars that they are essentially not a part of. Even Nikaidou's scene - it was hilarious to watch, but it's damn tragic when you realize how he's over-relying on drugs since the time he first lost his body parts (damn, I wonder, if he's still alive by the end of this series, how intact would his body be?). His mind is really regressing.

Ahhhhh, I really love this series. Looking forward to the next episode~

This is what I call good and effective writing, its exactly what alot of shows fail to do, to make us even care for side characters and to enhance the already established characters, we can see that with Sugimoto's part in the battle of Mukden, with honoring his friend's wish to save those more worthy of saving, and with Tsurumi, its also established that he was a spy. which is why he is very cunning and can easily sway the masses to his favor, and its even demonstrated with him lying to Tsukishima. I honestly love this episode, great work.

With Tsukishima having been around more or less since the start of the show, I'm genuinely surprised it's taken this long to get to his backstory. It's another interesting and impactful one though, just like Ogata's last season. Seeing Tsurumi before the brain damage was interesting as well, though it's surprising how little his personality changed in that time.

Also nice to get a small glimpse of Asirpa's group and what they're currently up to, though Kiroranke's attempts to radicalise her are definitely concerning. Just have to hope Sugimoto and co can catch up before Kiroranke succeeds.

Er... so what really happened to Igogusa-chan? Is she dead or alive?

At first she was presumably dead --> Tsukijima killing his daddy --> Tsurumi fabricated lie to tell him that she was alive --> Tsukijima serving in the army for 9 years --> someone from his village told him she was indeed dead --> Tsukijima lashing out at Tsurumi --> Tsurumi admitted he did all that to keep Tsukijima alive and save his life --> at the end it looks like that soldier is in cahoot with Tsurumi. WAT?

Why going through all this trouble to deceive Tsukijima a 2nd time? He would've served Tsurumi obediently after knowing Igogusa was alive somewhere in Tokyo... this is what I don't understand...

Nikaidou can't catch a break, man's whole life is just a bunch of L's lmao.

Tsukishima's backstory on the other hand though, Tsukishima is definitely one of the best characters in the show. Well almost all the characters in the show are the best. That's a whole lot of lies, Tsurumi is definitely the best manipulator I have ever seen.

And it's cool that Sugimoto appears to some degree on every soldier characters backstory. Man I can't wait for the next episode.

Igogusa's fate is still in question but it doesn't matter anymore as Tsukishima has made up his mind to remain loyal to Tsurumi.

First, let's say that we believe in the first story that Tsurumi told about Igogusa-chan married to someone and currently living in Tokyo.

Tsurumi stated that he needed subordinate who spoke Russian and the military would value that person in order to prepare or the upcoming war and that man would be Tsukishima.

But was that enough to get Tsukishima out of jail? (According to Tsurumi, the answer was no)

So Tsurumi made a stage, tricking everyone in the village that he found Igogusa's remains buried under Tsukishima's father's house so that people would perceive that he deserved to meet his brutal demise, that Tsukishima was justified to kill him, thus making it easier for him to be released from prison.

But why didn't Tsurumi tell Tsukishima about this? It's probably that he didn't want to burden Tsukishima for more. Besides, Tsurumi's goal of making Tsukishima find back his will to live has been accomplished.

The soldier who told Tsukishima that Igogusa-chan was indeed dead was clearly ordered by Tsurumi. But why did Tsurumi think he needed to do so?

Tsurumi stated that he needed men who would do dirty jobs and ready to plunge into the depth of hell (men who would do terrible things that got nothing left to lose). Even after 9 years, Tsukishima was still tied with Igogusa's memory as he still kept Igogusa's hair. Maybe Tsurumi wanted to test his loyalty and bind him even more by letting him know how much effort he put in to get him out of jail. Even after knowing the story from the soldier, Tsukishima didn't lose it, though he got mad and demanded an explanation. Tsurumi knew right away that Tsukishima would be a great use of him so he tried to keep him alive by throwing him while Tsukishima tried to protect him, resulting in Tsurumi losing his frontal lobe.

Later, Tsurumi told Tsukishima that it was all an act to make it easier for getting him out of his death row and Igogusa-chan was alive and well with her family in Tokyo. And at that moment, Tsukishima believed this. What's left of Tsukishima now? First, he was grateful that Tsurumi saved his life but now that he learned how Tsurumi risking his position (by lying about Tsukishima's ability of speaking Russian) and the length he would do to get him out of his death row (by putting on an act) then saving him again by throwing his body which just happened, how could one not feel highly indebted?

Why did the letters stop coming? Was Igogusa alive or dead?
Why did Tsukishima's father spread the rumor about his death?
Did Tsurumi really dig up Igogusa's remains?
In the first place, was the story about Igogusa married and living in Tokyo really true?
WE DON'T KNOW. And Tsukishima doesn't either. They may be truths mixing up with lies and lies and lies until it doesn't matter anymore.

Tsukishima threw away Igogusa's hair as a symbol of leaving his past. Did he regret this? YES, HE DID. If you paid attention to how this story started, it began by Tsukishima warning Sugimoto not to lose his control or he would regret it in the future then a flashback of Tsukishima throwing Igogusa's hair. So, did Tsukishima learn the truth? Yes and no. It will be another story in the future.

Now this episode is another addition to the testament of Golden Kamuy's amazing world-building and character wiritng, bravo.

Karafuto a.k.a Sakhalin, the stranglehold of both Japan and Russia to the Ainu, and sad to see Wilk a.k.a Nopperabo go beyond his promise to betray the Ainu, something that does not fit well with Asirpa since Season 1.

But man, it's been too long to see Lieutenant Tsurumi being so casual, and Nikaidou sure can't escape his prosthetic state. But the conversation between him and Tsukushima is a whole lotta somethin' else. To take advantage of a lover's remorse, that's just the cunning ways of Tsurumi. We may never know what happened to Igogusa, but as hell we'll know that the entire thing was a farce to sell him into the plot of lies. In all word of the sense, Tsurumi only has BIG plans, and small ones like Tsukushima's are just side cheddar, to save his men by implanting lie after lie for a saving grace...AND THERE'S NO TURNING BACK.

What a smooth talker of a bastard Tsurumi is, and it's brillant character development.

Perhaps by tricking poor Tsukijima a 2nd time that'd allow him to obtain that type of subordinate; since I'm the type who won't fix something that's not broken I'd have been ok with leaving Tsukijima as he is without risking my frontal lobe, guess I'm not a reckless madlad like Tsurumi lol

Hopefully we'll learn about Igogusa's fate someday and if not, that's ok too as that'd add a mysterious touch to the series.
