I knew this episode was going to be good. It had all the makings to be fascinating no matter how little of it was adapted from the manga. The Sunny has become a small boiling pot of built up chaos, Mom closing in to avoid, Katakuri and Perospero to be dealt with; how Luffy will get past his future vision and likely force him into the mirror especially, how the coup de vent would impact everything! Then, this episode also front loaded itself with Pedro death flags out the wazoo!!
I would like to mostly talk about Pedro because he surprisingly took over the entire episode. It is not surprising that he died, setting him up as somebody who had little life force remaining, and by stating the Big Mom cannot place life force into other people if I recall correctly, he was a character that was quite frankly designed to die. Many episodes ago I messaged my friend about how I think he's going to die in the coolest way possible. By making him the one to defeat Perospero and linking his past with Perospero, we even got to hear about his ambition and resolve to die. He's happy this way, not unlike Ace was. With that set, this was honestly a pretty death rather than a devastating one because I think many of us saw it coming. In fact, it's the best way for him to go, everyone has their own turn, it was his! He was able to die for the future he and his allies wanted. Similar to his desire to die where he chose, there is a line in Ten: Tenhou-doori no Kaidanji which this reminded me of. “People want to live freely and die freely… It's nothing to be ashamed of… We’ll die when our time is up!”
This obviously hurt most for Carrot, but, I have to wonder if Brook is conscious at all... The two made a brotherhood of sorts when they fought for the poneglyph. Will he come to have knowledge of what has happened or will somebody need to tell him? That skeleton really cared about Pedro, man… Either way, the other aspect was certainly Pedro’s connection to Roger and Oden. We got to see Roger walking and talking, we got to see Pedro’s reaction to the death of Roger, and the effect that Roger intended, to inspire. Pedro really went out just like his pirate hero, huh? All to keep Luffy searching for the true meaning of freedom... By the way, I thought about Pell like another user here did, but there has been notable death in the post time skip. In this single arc we’ve had a handful of admittedly unimportant characters die, at the hands of Mom, or at the hands of Vito. I would like to think Oda learned from one of his most hated decisions ever, and the fact that death has become a more frequent part of One Piece makes me have hope and belief that two more have gone down.
It was also great to see all of our old friends reacting to Roger’s death. Buggy bawling his eyes out initially gave me some shivers, I wondered how much Roger meant to him. However, afterwards I thought this was inconclusive for that kind of reading. During Impel Down, he cried for Bon Clay’s sacrifice but moments later put it behind him and began to party! He has always had these moments of humanity where he'll cry because Luffy has put faith in him, or because he has been reunited with his friends, or even if he has lost a new friend, but moments later he will always be able to put that aside for his selfish inclinations and desires. He’s just an emotional guy with some sense of goodness deep down inside that never wins out. That's how I understand the character at least, so seeing a single frame of his tears is still going to make me hold my reservations. Shanks however cried just like Luffy did when he beat Usopp, pulling the straw hat down in front of his eyes. I liked seeing that connection between the two. For whatever reason there has been a choice to tease Crocodile from behind. I think this, and last time we saw him, it was his back. I will always appreciate seeing my man even if it is as sparse as that but I do wonder why we are being deprived like this! Doflamingo and Dragon were there, Moria looked to have more of a chin, and Mihawk looked good as a younger man! That said, Mihawk still had his golden, spiral eyes which means if the Hakuba eye theory holds any weight; the theory that Mihawk has tamed an inner demon to control at all times, he had already tamed it all the way back when Roger was executed. Well, then again, if canonical! I'm not exactly sure what the filler in this episode was.
To touch on the non-Pedro, Katakuri not taking damage made me think he was using his future vision to predict where he would be attacked and morphed his body accordingly to avoid the impacts preemptively. Similar to the fan theory that Buggy did so to avoid being cut by Mihawk’s black blade. Lastly, we got yet another shot of Jimbei picking up Nami to carry her, seeing the large amount of content with the two of them definitely sparks my interest. |
