Just looking at the protagonist's picture makes me want to punch him in the face. After reading TV Trope, I want to into my computer just so I can punch in the face. I am not like most nerds who seem to hate, whine, get annoyed, and make a big deal out of every little shit so there are few characters that I get annoyed with but boy is this guy's face just asking for it.

Okay so yeah, anime looks super different and weird. The process of rotoscoping an entire series is a weird decision and definitely does contain benefits, namely the more realistic and natural motion displayed throughout the entire episodes. Still, the lack of detail present in the character models, especially when compared to highly detailed background art, is incredibly jarring and off-putting. I don't really blame anyone for having serious issue with how the show looks though I admittedly still have a soft spot for it. Outside of the movement bonus I wouldn't really go out of my way to defend it, but monotony is one of my least favorite favorite things and anime is a medium a choice for me because of the high levels of variety, not just in story but in visual styling as well. That said, so many anime still blend in together design wise that I find myself often bored with the visual component, and while I don't love this, I certainly don't hate it and definitely don't find it boring.

But how about the actually content of the episode. 90% of this was this very natural slice of life series about a quiet read-y boy who crushes on ms. popularity/brains and while I enjoyed that fine, it was the other 10% that made things interesting. Like Nakamura, she is such a clash with the rest of the show, I actively sat-up from my side lie when she called the teacher a "Shit face". From her evil stare, red hair, and personality, everything about her stands out from the other quiet or friendly bullying that we seen. And the constant foreboding flower raising in the corner helped build intrigue in the current events, leading to a pretty great conclusion. The ED song, especially the fact that it started before the credits, role did such a great job of providing the ending with an eeriness that makes me eager to continue the series.

I can't stand the animation of charaters, obviously, the way they unnaturaly move hurts my eyes >_< Such a shame, the backgrounds, soundtrack, ending song - all of that stuff was captured perfectly (although the pacing was too slow for my liking). Hope I can get used to the rotoscope animation, because the creepy pycho atmosphere is totally my thing.

While I love the rotoscope animation that reminds me of my favorite animated movie (Waking Life) and the trippiness, I think the facial expressions are a bit too bland and don't convey emotions that much. I'm not a big fan of the OST either, which can be described as a constant, irritating loud noise.

That said, I still liked the first episode and am looking forward to see where this goes! I might drop it if it stays slow like that, but it's certainly unique and different, so I feel like I should give it a chance.

I'm definitely sticking to this anime~

Thanks for this, I have only watched 3 episodes, not read the manga (but I want to) and Kasuga's reactions remind me of myself at that age. Insofar as how he blows everything out of proportion and is nervous around people he finds attractive. This anime makes me think of how there are some really fu ked up people in this world (nakamura) and also people who are seriously unaware of it (saeki).

I also like how it pointed me towards the poems (also, a online lingerie shop with some super attractive models).

I gotta say, as disturbing as it is, I'm still grateful to the people who spent time to put it together for giving us something unique and evocative.

Ok this was sooo weird... I really don't like the character artstyle, like come ON what's the point of trying to make the characters look realistic, it's supposed to be unrealistic, IT'S ANIME. Well, so far it looks good actually, the story

Interesting art style. The episode was so calm until that Nakamura girl came up. She disturbed the peace. That's a one creepy ending song if it really can be called a song.
If you are going to disagree with me, don't bother talking to me. I will seriously hurt you!

Yes, in an ideal world... The character design would be faithful to the manga style
but there's no changing that. I think away from this glaring flaw, I rlly like the atmosphere they are creating
It feels so damn tense and some of the imagery was rlly cool. Also, the ED song is very weird but in a good way.

I don't get the hate. It looks unique in this sea of cookie cutter big eyed character designs, the uncomfortable nature of the rotoscoping only hightened the discomfort, and the directing and cinematography were both quite phenomenal bringing forth some truly fantastic atmosphere. Seems like a case of "not like manga or its anime contemporaries so it's bad" to me. Sounds like the same crowd who would say with all their teeth that Berserk 1997 is an awful adaptation just as bad as the recent ones. Honestly really likng it. Only problem with the visuals is when the characters stop moving and image becomes static all of a sudden.

It's to: A. Make it stand out. B. Intentionally strengthen the tension and discomfort. Pretty good rotoscope, don't really see what's wrong.

Underrated for being a better version of the manga insofar. The music and backgrounds expressed the emotion it was going for much sooner than the manga did. I got the impression immediately.

I don't understand the heavy criticism this episode received. While it certianly felt "edgy," I enjoyed the tense atmosphere it managed to create. Regarding the animation, that I can understand - to an extent. That extent being animation does not really matter - to me - if the plot and characters are good. And so far, this series is living up to that standard.

The best way that I can describe this is... eerie. Whether it turns out to be eerie in a good way or a bad way remains to be seen. I'll keep watching for now to see how the story progresses - I haven't read the manga and literally stumbled across the anime by using Crunchyroll's random feature.

I've seen a lot of people say they don't like the art style of the adaptation. That doesn't really bother me, I actually think it's kind of cool. I do like the way that they use music to ramp up the feel of darkness and underlying malice. And I think the first episode did a really good job of introducing the main characters without giving us so much information that it felt overwhelming. I'm interested to see where it goes from here.

Well, I think this is going to be even more bizzare than Ex-Arm...

So much effort were put to the ending theme...

Although, I must say the opening felt so out of place

Comparing this with the manga, I think I liked this design more since I'm currently tired of seing childish face

In the anime version of Aku no Hana, the animators chose to use a technique called Rotoscoping: Rotoscoping is an animation technique in which animators trace over footage, frame by frame, for use in live-action and animated films. Now there is a reason for this the adaptation looks creepy right? which is exactly what they were going for. Read the manga if you cant handle the adaptation. its pretty good

Years ago I dropped this show, but I don't know why, really. Perhaps due to lack of time I resigned from further watch.

I will give it another chance. After all, you rarely saw such brilliant and original take on TV series animation back when Aku no Hana aired. Rotoscoping looks great if done properly, and judging only by the first episode I can tell it really looked very glod.

This first episode had some really interesting ideas in it, I really enjoyed how they were executed.

The theme of the anime looks like it’s gonna be revolve off of Baudelaire’s poem Beauty from the book Flowers of Evil, and the lines recited being
On a throne in the sky, a mysterious sphinx,
I join a heart of snow to the whiteness of swans;
I hate movement for it displaces lines,
And never do I weep and never do I laugh.

The sphinx being beauty personified, and due to having the sphinx-like qualities of being inscrutable and enigmatic, it was misunderstood by others and judged to reside in heaven. Beauty does not exclusively reside in heaven - it’s found in all places, it’s even found in hell.
Its ability to join heart of snow and whiteness of swans could be understood as being able to join together attributes of established beauty, becoming beautiful even more to the beholder.
Beauty’s hatred for movement is because it shatters the ideal it projected to others; any change will do nothing but ruin its canvas. Because of this hatred, it neither weeps nor laughs because fear and laughter are similar in their essences, both requiring the element of surprise as said by Kasuga.

As to how this poem tied together the episode, and possibly the rest of the anime (I didn’t watch the other episodes yet), is our femme fatale Saeki. Kasuga sees her as his idea of beauty personified: heart of snow to the whiteness of swans, akin to him subtly noting Saeki being physically beautiful and later on discovering she's also smart, and Kasuga’s hatred for movement, depicted by his sudden outburst when his friend suggested something offbeat to him about Saeki, “I heard she has a jungle down there” - a movement causing displacement towards his conceived beauty ideals.
The other two ideas of misunderstood beauty being found everywhere and neither weeping nor laughing might be shown later on in the anime. Nakamura seems to be alluded the misunderstood beauty because of her contrast to Saeki in apparently all aspects, and time will reveal her kind of beauty.

One thing to note is that the “fear and laughter stemming from element of surprise” tidbit was used in this episode as well when we saw the same scenes again and again (0:00-2:22 is roughly same as 13:42-14:55, and other mundane small talk placed throughout the episode) until something surprising happened; Nakamura tells the teacher “stfu shithead”, instilling fear to the teacher and students around her.

Perhaps each episode might instead use a different poem from the Flowers of Evil as its theme, that would be something fun to try and analyze.

I’m also surprised how people are distraught by the animation. I for one was drawn into it the moment I began watching the episode. I would agree that the animation does look unappealing as a still image, but it’s much more better pleasing in movement. Overall I’m enjoying how the cinematography’s being directed as “banal” in contrast to  being lively and saturated conventional anime tend to be.

(Tá, eu to apaixonado da Nakamura Hehe!)

My friend told me to watch this, and man, it's pretty weird that it starts with a very self deprecating OP after being very ominous throughout the anime.

I guess this anime has a deeper meaning than just letting intrusive thoughts win. But yeah, kind of weird. I'm intrigued. But I acknowledge it might be a slow anime.

Not everything has to be an UFOTABLE spectacle of colours, lights and sakuga or A-1 Pictures slop of the week; it's also fine to have something like this, it aids the desolate atmosphere and is far more unique than so many products made by many corporations; plus, if I remember correctly, it was approved by the author, since these characters aren't supposed to be supermodels but rather imperfect, real people; since, from what I've heard, it is a core theme in this work, the "uglyness" of being and sexuality. So many things in this thread are truly exaggerated, I guess because people are too used to conventional styles, because this isn't even the hardest thing out there to digest. Ominous atmosphere throughout the entire episode and it builds up to an off-putting ending.
