Yes. Yes. Yes. HBO is perfect for a series like this. Also great that it's TV and not a movie. Better to flesh out the story and characters, instead of a condensed hour and a half film. This has potential to be amazing.

For the first time in my life, there is going to be a live action adaptation of a manga that I actually think will be really fucking good. HBO has done some amazing stuff, and so has Del Toro. Hoping for the best on this one.

You can't assume that. I have seen Band of Brothers and that only had one scene with nudity (that I can remember). Besides, it's not like the source material is completely devoid of that kind of content anyways.

This can be a hit or miss. Actually the first thing that crossed my mind was Stan Lee's Heroman, a miss for the greatest comic writer. That prooved that not everyone can make a good anime.

Guillermo del Toro has made truly masterpieces, such as Mr. Lee. I just hope he does a great job turning an anime into a TV series, I'm really looking forward to it!

SO. FUCKING. EXCITED.

I remember three or four years ago when Del Toro tried to make a movie of Monster using the writer of American History X, but it didn't even get its feet off the ground. But, this is easily ten times better. Monster really is meant for a TV format and HBO usually pulls out quality work.

Of course there will be changes though. I bet that they'll make Tenma an American in Germany instead.

As much as I dislike the idea, would it really change much of anything? I don't remember Tenma's race playing a particularly large role in the series. The other characters pretty much need to stay the same, though.

Only minor changes, seeing how in the newspaper, witnesses, and the cops main description of him was that he was Japanese, also when he bowed to people, and when he cooked for the man that taught him to use the gun, that man had a kid that wasn't his but of someone of a parent that he killed while in war, and she hated him and never showed any kind of affection or feelins towards him until one day she finally laughed at him for being unable to use chopstix and...... idk what else.

I think the setting / race / nationalities of characters could be pulled off fine; it'll only be awkward hearing everyone speaking English for viewership purposes, when they should obviously be speaking German. Ah well, the anime had everyone speaking Japanese, so I guess I should just approach it from this mindset.

Del Toro is a huge stickler for detail, and likely won't budge on his criteria for adaption. I mean, look at the Mountains of Madness; he's shot down every attempt at studio compromise to make it more marketable, and subsequently, it remains in development hell. If Pacific Rim proves successful, it's very likely that he's just gonna pay out-of-pocket to get that movie made. The guy has his own fundamentals, and I'm not especially worried with him tackling a live-action Monster.

Also: Game of Thrones and The Wire are among my favorite television shows, so I have confidence in the extreme flexibility and budget that HBO brings to the table here. And to those bitching about the GoT adaption, I've read the books as well. Of course, the show can't live up to the novels, but as an adaption, I think it's been doing an incredible job, and THAT has to be at least ten times harder to pull off than a successful Monster adaption. If Del Toro and his crew is even half as competent as GoT's showrunners, I think we'll have a success.

Too bad that a subscription for HBO is pretty expensive in the year 2013. Guess I'll have to pirate this if it happens just like Game of Thrones.

I think this could work. Monster in my opinion is one of the few series that may have what it takes to be a live-action series as long as its handle with the right cast and crew.

Yeah, I'm not really against the idea of Americanizing Tenma. If I remember from the show, Tenma was only Japanese to make him easily identifiable, to make him more isolated from the cast/setting, and to make him easily relatable to the audience. And, really, all of the three can be done just as well by making him any other race. That's one detail that wouldn't really bother me if it were changed.

wtf? ... So its basically a remake, right? Or do you mean "TV Show" as in "Live-Action TV Show" ? ... that'd be OK... I don't know, I don't really watch TV Shows so I doubt I'd watch it.

You might want to watch Monster ... I would say watch it, since the HBO series will be different regardless of how well it's down (personally think if they tried to create the anime exactly it would actually suffer a bit, since certain things are done better in anime and can't be re-created (vice-versa applies too of course)) but it would be a good idea to see the original, plus it's a great series in general.

This is probably going to take quite a long time to start airing, so you might want to just watch the anime.

Well the people behind this seem reliable enough, I have faith that this could succeed.

Hugo Weaving = Lunge
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

I would love to see that <3

I'm quite unsure about most american adaptations from japanese anime/manga, but knowing Guillermo Del Toro is at the helm, and HBO collaborates with him, I can't help but feel excited. I wonder if a japanese actor will play doctor Tenma (hope so), and also who will play Johan (it would be interesting if he were european, or at least give off an european vibe).
