DAMN, I did it again! D:

No need to be sorry! Again the turn to apologise falls on me, since I've been beset by similar circumstances. School and exams never cease to keep me busy. I hope you had a good time during break and at ACEN, though! I will look forward to seeing all those pictures. :D

Ahaha, I get ya. Coffee's nice with some things, but green tea is more my mainstay. You should probably teach me how to make that thing with the iced green tea, lemonade, strawberry, and sweetener someday; it sounds delicious!

Aaaah, thank you! I will for sure. If I ever manage to send off that composition thing finished I'll be happy to provide you with a copy.

Yep, yep. At last I added you on Skype! There should be a contact request coming your way. Hope to talk to you there?

Ack, school flung itself at me via exam fortnight, and thus we have yet another belated reply to add to the pile. ):!

Barista at Starbucks! Aaaaah, you gotta let me in on some yummy recipes, man, when you come across them. It's good to hear you've been successful in your juggling! Fun is always good.

Guh, I think I'm still recovering from the effects of that exam fortnight. I'd say this cycle of urghness will clear up as soon as the year ends, and I have about three months to recuperate before steeling myself for university. As for the writing thing, it's pretty eclectic atm: I'm working on two composition projects for school, trying to start some origific, as well as puttin' some Mononoke Hime fic up on the interwebz after noticing a surprising lack of it. If I ever finish a thing I will definitely let you know!

And since this reply is again super late (NO EXCUSES LAURA), I'ma ask how you've been in the past few weeks! Excellent, I hope?

Also: I think via lurking on Peter's Backloggery I realised that you have a Skype account! You think correspondence would be easier that way?

Aaaal! It has been a long time. Don't be embarrassed; I am a very loquacious girl, and likewise I have missed my H-Man. :D

Not salty at all! I've been more or less splitting my time between writing and school, as well as the usual helping of assorted media. Not much time for gaming, I'm afraid. I haven't spent time on Backloggery for aaages. I've got a short break coming up after exam week, though, so hopefully I can squeeze more leisure time in then!

How's life been treating you, online and offline? Please tell me aaall about it!

No problem, my friend. I can totally understand, and I apologise for bombarding you with so many words all at once. In fact I've just lost half of this reply to you after some tab closing and shuffling, argh.

Haha, I always snicker inside (and feel slightly to very contemptuous) whenever I see an NA gamer complain about prices, or release dates, or limited editions not coming to their region, or PAL exclusives or blah blah blah. Yeah, it's really unfortunate that the old gens don't get any support at all--having only started gaming fiveish years ago, it's hard to catch up when you can't even get your hands on a console.

True, true! I'm mostly learning some Japanese now so I can get my hands on some native manga/games/novels. There looks to be hundreds of eligible importables out there, aaaahh.

Haha, I actually quite agree with you, and I appreciate that advice. Maybe it's the Chinese and Filipino sensibillities coming out in us, eh? I'm currently trying to think of something that strikes up a balance of good income and relative interest--I'd prefer to be good at what I do and not hate it, but it's not like I'm looking for a job that I'll fall in love with at the first go.

Ah, I'm glad to hear that you're safe. It's really terrifying to imagine a trampoline stuck in a telephone line, though.

I guess it is a shared thing between Beijing and Sydney, then! Ah, yes, China's definitely a place you should visit (though I don't know where you'd start). So you've experienced the Chinese New Year! Excellent--you and your buddy must've had great fun then.

Well, I'll alternate between H-Man and Al, if that suits your fancy. Oooh, awesome--I really enjoy learning about other cultures and such so I think you'll be my go-to guy for advice regarding Filipino customs and such. It does feel like our Asian continent is one big family, haha, especially when you take in mind all those commonalities in... just about everything.

YES I STARTED LOTGH YESSSSH! I've been spoiled for it (darnit), but it doesn't make it any less impressive! I love how different it is, and how well it still stands up after so many years. I was going to just watch Galaxy Express 999 first, but as great as it is, it still hasn't aged as well as some of its retro contemporaries have. So I balance it out with LotGH.

Definitely finish Aria sometime, then! Weeeell, at least I can say that I tried with "only rating extremes"--but I couldn't resist rating "just one more" title and it ended up uh... yeah. I did go back and rerate stuff for various reasons. I just hope I don't change my mind again, ahaha.

Yep, FFVIII is great, and I think my adventures with Squall have already brought huge amounts of teenage angst to the fore on his part. Still, I have nothing bad to say about it, and only a lot of good to say about it. I don't see why the game's split the base so decisively either. Sure, I can see why it wouldn't be one person's kinda game, but it's generally pretty likable I reckon.

Jizz, indeed! A Vita, ah, I'm so happy for you! How are you finding VLR? I saw your post on Tumblr concerning the system and does it sound ever tempting mmmmm.

Oh H-Man! Gosh, if goey male homoromance (and sex) is also another one of your things, go all out. I spent way too much time on that damn thing. But I did write it with a dear friend of mine in mind, so it was worth it in the end. I have ambivalent feelings and memories concerning the making-of, though I'm more or less satisfied with what it resulted in.

~JIBURI ETAAANARU~ But yep, to answer your question, I do write some original things--but it's often finishing them and mostly starting them at all that usually gets me stuck.

No? But I love reading your opinions on this kinda thing, and just discussing stuff with you in general. It's great fun and very enjoyable and helpful. If you ever get into reviewing again (games or anime or otherwise) do let me know.

And Al--I will definitely remember that awfully kind offer of yours. I'll possibly exploit it later. ;)

P.S. So I rewatched Princess Mononoke last night with a friend? And I felt extremely strongly about it? And oh no, help--I think I've ended up committing myself to writing Princess Mononoke fic. AL WHAT IS HAPPENING WHAT AM I EVEN DOING H-MAAAAN

And so it begins. :D

Haha, precisely. However, I should warn you! Now that we don't have a word count to adhere to, I'll probably be sending you super long and enthusiastic messages that will eventually pass the 2K mark. So prepare yourself!

Bahaha, sounds familiar, that! But you know, as long you enjoyed the time you spent procrastinating, it isn't really a waste of time. I'll wish you the best of luck on your job hunt!

Yeah, the censorship thing is kinda :/, but it's not as bad as you may be lead to believe. It doesn't affect me personally since there are only a select few games that never get published because of those laws. And even then, it's easy to import games for--say--a PS3, and it's usually cheaper that way anyway.

I think the amount of games available at all is a larger problem. Oh, and the freakishly inflated prices. Current gen games are commonly $100-120 a pop. There is literally zero support for anything last gen, with the exception all the PS2 stuff. And many games that are released for NA never make it to PAL regions, and so on. I also find that generally less people are into games at all.

Yep, your buddy was right--the wildlife really is out to kill you. Except for possums maybe. And haha, the female to male ratio~

Ah, cool. It's great that you're actually enjoying your (very practical!) major. As for the more creative pursuits, those can always come later after you do something with your IT qualifications. :)

I've always liked the idea of getting a highly impractical arts degree of some sort. I'm also keeping in mind bilateral relations as a back up thing, but honestly, I don't really have a set idea on what kind of job I'd like. Especially since I've been told many times that most people end up in a completely different place from whence they started.

Well, you'll like it if you're a sunshine boy, because it's fair weather all year round. Just colder and windier in winter. Ah yeah, I heard about the storm that's about to hit the East Coast. Will you be all right?

Wow, the natural environment and people of the Philippines sounds gorgeous. The pollution and corruption you mentioned would certainly be an issue, but I'm glad your childhood was so enjoyable and happy! And ah, I'm assuming now that your connection to the place is also tied in with your ethnicity?

Hmmm, so I guess 'hometown' constitutes both Beijing and Sydney.

China has both exquisite natural and man-made splendours and culture and art that runs thousands of years deep. I think I lived there until I was four in a half? And I return once every few years. The pollution is obviously terrible (though improving), there are holes in the system, and the country is quite crowded but I still love it. Our festivals (HAVE YOU EVER CELEBRATED THE NEW YEAR WITH CHINESE PEOPLE BECAUSE YOU SHOULD) are amazing to take in. Also there is that great sense of community and hospitality among the general populace, and it's lovely. <3

Aaaand, Australia is Australia--giant desert in the middle of the Pacific, though the majority of us live right next to the coast where it's nice and nourishing and moderate. We're a chill, friendly country, with really great healthcare and education! Corruption and pollution aren't problems we have to deal with, and it's a great place if you ever want to come visit.

YES YOU GO H-MAN YOU GO (also up till this point I still haven't got a clue as to what your first name is. Care to enlighten me? :D) I will gladly remind you to finish the thing, because it really is worth it! And you still haven't finished Hotel? What?!

I'm glad you'll try Otoyomegatari as well; it truly is excellent. Walking Man and YKK are both super quick reads. YKK you could probably finish in a day if you went real fast.

Maybe I'll check out Galaxy Express 999 first, then.

Ah, I did watch the first season of Aria and wow the animation's beautiful. I've gotta get around to watching the other seasons though.

Yeah, but get ready to write potentially longer replies as we go along. >:3

Ah, I do indeed do some writing--fanfic/own stuff/hopefully reviews of games/anime if I can get around to finishing them. There's mostly some No.6 homoromance on my AO3 account. I wrote a 30K thing as a farewell thing to the fandom, though, so now I am free to write for any new fandoms that might spring up. Oh, and I recently bookmarked some superb Spirited Away fic, if that's your thing.

I seriously want to write some Ghibli fic though, because there is a real lack of it.

What about you? I remember that you'd said you'd done some professional reviewing before. Do you write outside of these reviews? Mind linking me to your stuff? :D
eventyr Oct 26, 2012 8:22 PM
Excellent. I have a feeling this'll be fun, haha.

Ah, awesome. I still haven't checked out some of the longer-running/returning anime, so I might skip out on those for now. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for Sukinayo/Chuunibyou/Psycho Pass/Magi though! I'll be previewing some anime as well after I finish Last Exile and get a little further into Future Boy Conan.

I'm also looking into watching some retro anime. Galaxy Express 999, Legend of the Galactic Heroes and whatnot. Speaking of which, would you mind telling me more about LofGH?

Yep, the manga streak's been mighty fun. I have a few to recommend you, actually.

- Otoyomegatari is still ongoing, but it's basically pages upon pages of unbroken eyegasms and delight. It's centred around Central Asian brides and set a hundred or so years ago. It's a gorgeous portrayal of those cultures, with endearing characters and wonderful setting(s).

- Emma is kind of like a graphic Victorian maid romance novel. It starts off much less polished than it later becomes, but it's well worth the read, I'd say, especially if you grow to love Kaoru Mori like I did.

- FINISH 20TH CENTURY BOYS COME ON YOU CAN DO IT

- The Walking Man is a meditative single volume slice of life experience, and I would recommend it!

Now I don't know if Nabari no Ou or Immortal Rain would appeal to you, but I found both of them to be well told and worth reading. Nabari is a nuanced, sombre stories about sullen waiflike ninjas with serious issues. Immortal Rain is somewhat similar to Trigun, and mixes RPG elements with meaningful morals about immortality and love and blah blah blah. Also, if you like adorable monster smut Jingai Haruman should be up yer alley, and if you like tragic full colour monster smut Hanafuda is certainly interesting.

And Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou! It is great, and I often see people on MAL praising it to no ends, and deservedly. It's highly poetic, mono no aware fare and the art is beautiful. Little dialogue, lotsa scenery porn. It's also interesting in that it's one of the few pieces of post-apocalyptic fiction that doesn't give you a crapsack world straight off, but rather paints a pastoral, peaceful kind of atmosphere in a Japan overgrown with grass.
