In my viewpoint, anime doesn't really increase your intelligence, but your stocked knowledge is. I usually get high marks in school and anime has contributed a lot on it. |

The only way anime could make you smarter is by telling you that Japan is a pretty perverted and sick country to visit, and some Japanese definitions. Other than that, no, it makes you more perverted and more blood lusty. |

Contrary to a lot of the original posters I definitely feel like anime shows have proven, in a multitude of cases, their respective themes regardless of popular opinion. Although nearly everything is subjective when it comes to anime, I'm pretty proud to say that anime has heightened me both in both intellectual and worldly ways. |

Does anime make people dumber? Yes some people assume by watching anime you get dumber by it, but only because from what they have seen after and before getting into anime. Like comparing your personal life to the anime you see, as in relating yourself to a certain character, or hoping you were in an anime ect, which is pretty silly sometimes yes, same goes for speaking japanese and adding japanese honorifics to names when your not fluent, or even close to fluent.. or trying to copy your favorite character.. Ect, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's because of anime It's just the person themself, so I personally think it makes no difference. It's purely something to entertain you, you don't lose-- nor gain knowledge from anime, you'll learn some new things but that is just only natural for everyday life to learn something new, from almost anything you see you gain some intelligence, so you do gain more knowledge about Japan and other things from anime but i doubt it can make you more stupid, I don't think I've gotten any dumber from anime, I may get a little to obsessive but that could go for anything, any passion or hobby. |

It doesn't matter if you're watching a great anime with deep meaning and not absorb nothing. What's important is that you reflect on what you're watching, even if is those tiny moments of wisdom the random just for fun filled with ecchi anime sometime have. The best thing would be to diverse what you consume. Anime, manga, books, movies, games |

Personally: I've grown (in the psychological sense) quite a lot since I started watching anime. I can't tell if it is because of anime, or I've just got older or it's my other hobbies. But I think anime had an important part in that. I think anime about relationships like Haganai were quite important in this regard. Pirating_Ninja said: Also I mentioned earlier you might actually learn something ... Gratz it took you 30 minutes to learn one fact, if only you could move that fast in school, oh wait... Basically it is like watching TV (not documentaries) or Video Games ... Believing you have learned something maybe true but your belief that it is a good way of learning would be fucking retarded, just read a book, one sentence can literally be more insightful than an entire anime series in some cases... It's a past time for entertainment, don't try and give anime an educational value. Some sage might condense all of humanity's wisdom into a book of wise phrases. It will probably end up published a lot, and anybody could open it and read it. But will reading the phrase in a book have the same effect as watching an anime illustrating said piece of wisdom? I think not. By watching an anime, said wisdom becomes a lot more real. But the best part of anime is, you probably won't even bother opening that book of wisdom. But you would go and watch anime because it's fun. TsundereHeart said: Although anime probably doesn't make you smarter, it might make you think more about topics you never thought about(like whether or not it's right to kill every evil person in the world, a topic that comes up in F/Z and Death Note) |

Everything can be watched in a way that kills your brain. But if you don't turn your brain off while watching anime, you're critical of it and watch a variety of anime then yes it's good for your intelligence. You expose yourself to a variety of ideas and analyze them. |

sedmelluq said: I liked this answer the best.Anime is just one of many ways to tell a story and convey ideas. So therefore you are asking if stories and ideas can make a person more insightful. Pretty much the only other way to do that would be personal experience. Of course some people are less affected by ideas they haven't comprehended by direct personal experience, but I believe ideas can still have an effect on people's insightfulness without that. Ratohnhaketon said: Well said.Really depends on your mindset when watching anime. If you're looking for lessons, values, and ideas to take away from it, then it can if you keep an open mind. If you're just watching for fun and turn your brain off each episode, then doubtful. Just take a look at anime that convey meaningful messages and look at their episode discussions. It's usually the critical thinkers who are saying "yeah I can see x from y perspective now" and the casuals that are like "lolpseudo-intellectual anime tried to be 2edgy 1/10." Tavor said: Interesting thought, I should think it some more.I think one of the reasons the literature offered in school is no longer 'thought provoking' is because it's not from our generation. When something like The Awakening spout up, it sure did made some light bulbs flicker on. Nowadays, it doesn't really offer the same impact, for obvious reasons, as it no longer inspires us when it's a past issue society dealt with long ago. A more current medium, such as anime, can easily offer a great 'life lesson' because it's more 'in the now'; it's understandable why the stuff you read/watch in school makes you feel apathetic. Shicchi said: I disagree, excessive hard-work is stupid. Smart people do their work the easy way.Watching anime make me lazier, thus also make me stupider. If it did, someone would've already found the cure for all diseases in the world (jk they would've been too busy watching anime/ reading manga). Curing AIDS might be possible with the right knowledge, a lot of insight, and a big budget. But cure for all diseases is still very far away (and seems to need magical nanorobots). IWBFHTYML said: But you are likely to become kinder, which is good too.Depends, if you watch moe anime all day I doubt your IQ would go up. Maria_Sama said: It was the opposite for me.Anime makes you more antisocial. katsucats said: It's probably too late to make a discussion on this topic, but a lot of anime villains fall into the same cognitive trap - they think something up, and don't discuss it with others. One person can make the final decision, but if he were to do all the thinking as well, it is bound to end badly.Watching anime makes you dumber, at least as long as you don't realize that all the views presented in anime are straw men of issues that are vastly more complicated in real life, and that you could probably count the number of philosophical archetypes in anime on 1 hand. Today I just finished the Devil Survivor anime, and at the end of it Hibiki says in the narrative some hypocritical shit like "we should let everyone contribute their will for the future of mankind instead of letting one person bear all the responsibility" -- you know, the kind of vacuous bullshit some kid might use to excuse himself from having to take responsibility... (It's hypocritical because by making this decision, Hibiki is forcing his idea of the future upon mankind because he was in the power to do so, regardless of what he thinks is right. Another high-five to our villain for being more consistent!) |

Short answer, anime doesn't affect intelligence. (Though I think people of lesser emotional intelligence seem to be drawn towards anime, or perhaps specific kinds of anime. SHOTS FIRED) Long answer, Insight != intelligence. Anime might make you more insightful. Not insightful like, "omg everything doesn't matter", but it gives you insight the way stories in general give you insight. Exposing yourself to different worldviews makes you a more well-rounded person. Consuming stories is a way to intake a part of the author's worldview. You gain exposure to different kinds of people (characters), situations, and philosophies. I guess the caveat here is that you need a critical mind -- to be able to judge whether you like specific qualities, and more importantly, why you like those qualities. You need to be able to entertain ideas without accepting them. I think this process makes you more insightful. Anime falls in the same boat as literature and film, even if it is of vastly lower quality (on average). |

It makes you more aware of how life is not so black and white. There are many anime which have moral dilemmas that illustrate this. Good and evil (moral relativism), utilitarianism, and artificial intelligence are some of the issues that characters in anime deal with. These and many more are taught in philosophy in more depth ofc These issues are much less apparent the more light-hearted an anime is. Or if they have ridiculous fan service. Slice of life and Harem anime come to mind. |

I want to overtie to your second and third passage by saying that you're exposing to a whole new culture, which means you're broadening your horizons, thus you'll have a different perspective for said culture. In a way, the anime medium can serve and is serving, perhaps, as a proxy to exposing yourself to their culture. I think the same may apply to a whole plethora of things, excluding drugs, drugs are bad, don't do drugs; traveling, exploring a new genre, a new medium and etc can serve to widen your knowledge, thus gaining new experience and possibly increasing your intelligence quotient(?). |

I would say no for the same reason that reading Nietzsche does not necessarily make you smarter than anyone else. It's what you do with what you watch/read that matters. Always think about what you consume and make connections between other works and ideas. That is what will help you grow as an intellectual. |

Yes, to some point. Anime made learn much more about people.I know, you'd think that learning what and who people are from anime would be terrible, and not helpful at all, but it isn't. Because of anime, I now am more perceptive of people. I can see much more about a person than I previously could, good and bad. It may or may not be because of anime, but my entire thought process of speech has changed. I do not write essays and speak in person as I used to. When I type it is relatively the same, though elsewhere I feel as though I'm an entire different person. .... I also can read faster than I used to before. |
