Welp, I won't be able to see any of that.

My crappy PC can only take up to 1080p.

Oh well.

I wouldn't say that.

Well I suppose that holds true for TV series, but movies have been in 16:9 for ages.

For instance, I have a Project A-Ko laserdisc that's formatted in 16:9, but it's designed to run on a 4:3 TV so they gave it this funny letterbox job that has the movie displayed on the top 2/3 of the screen and the subtitles fill the bottom 1/3 of black space.

Overall, I'd say you're completely safe with post-'05 anime.

Yeah...

It's weird, actually. I can't stand 4:3 anymore either because all my screens are 16:9.

Damn, will streaming 4k HD via the Internet be a viable option? Not to mention the insane file size for a single episode with decent quality.

720p is still a grand luxury to me. 4k is just ridiculous, lol.

It doesn't need to be a bigger monitor, you just download anime in 16:9 resolution? It could be a problem since most of the old animes are in 4:3.

I've never shied away from watching 16:9 anime on the old 4:3 screens I still use (like right now), nor have I done so more recently with 4:3 content on my newer 16:9 screens. While I don't entirely understand the aversion to black bars, I can answer the question with some confidence.

Not quite. I did run through and count them awhile back, and while I can't find the exact numbers, I can say this much:

First 16:9 TV anime: Betterman (Spring 1999), Vandread (Fall 2000)

After that, 16:9 anime gradually increased year to year.

In the Fall 2006 season, the 16:9 numbers jumped considerably, to the point where 4:3 became a small minority.

The last otaku-market 4:3 TV anime aired in 2007, those being Manabi Straight, Saint October (both Winter '07), and Lovely Complex (Spring '07). After that, the only 4:3 anime have been all-ages/kodomo shows like Chi's Sweet Home and the last 4:3 TV anime I've been able to find, Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia (Spring '09). Most long-running anime such as Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece switched to 16:9 around April of 2008. Some hentai continued to be made in 4:3 through the late 00s, though I don't know exactly when that practice stopped.

So the shortest answer would be "Fall 2007."

when hd(720p) became the standard resolution
Again, not quite. There were a number of TV series in 2007 and 2008 (after the 16:9 transition was done) whose broadcasts were low-res (=720x480 anamorphic/letterboxed), or as the fansubbers released them, 400p. Even some of the 720p broadcasts for 2006-2009 anime were eventually regarded as upscales of low-res animation, as evidenced by the way people threw out their HDTV-rips of shows like Honey & Clover 2, Shigofumi, and Myself; Yourself in favor of DVD-rips.

No, get an old monitor: a 4:3 screen as a secondary display -- works for 4:3 content and hiding the flaws in low-res anime that become more visible on large screens. It shouldn't be too hard to find one via Craigslist > Free or charity electronics shops.

Oh yeah, I can't wait to see how awesomely TV stations can upscale anime that'll still be made (as it is today) at 540p or 720p to 4K or 8K or whatever.

Not sure if this is a direct answer, but the earliest HD television anime I know of(?) is One Piece, which began HD on Episode 207, which aired in October 2004. There is probably earlier, but I don't know.

I only notice when watching 90's anime such as Sorcerer Hunters (1995) when you have the black banners on each side of the screen. And as OP mentioned, it can get annoying after a while.

The first season of Gintama was 4:3 i think as that had the black banner sections on either side of the screen as well. I've heard that at the beginning of the 2nd season (ep 201) Gintoki's hands appear to come out of the tv and widen the screen to 16:9 proportions.

Am planning on starting Gintama S2 soon, can't wait!

You can switch the Aspect Ratio mode in VLC easily, from 4:3 to 16:9, 16:10 and vice versa, but once you do so you should be prerpared to watch it like:

@Zalis I think your post on Betterman being widescreen in 1999 is wrong. Just because the DVD and Blu-ray release of Betterman are in 1.85:1 doesn't mean it originally aired that way.

I've skimmed through a bunch of episodes, and it's pretty clear to me it's been cropped. I feel completely claustrophobic just watching it. Sadly, it's hard to find any concrete info though, so I'm wanting to know your source.

I've been trying to get a copy of this show, but all the places I look say it was originally 1.85:1, and I'm fairly sure they wouldn't do that in 1999 considering the smaller size of Japanese 4:3 TVs. Even if they did, it would've still aired in 4:3 (pan-and-scan or statically cropped), but there's not enough info in each scene to crop it from the 1.85:1 release.

After more looking around, I finally found something conclusive on this old Best Buy listing for the DVD:
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/betterman-vol-2-metamorphosis-dvd/4700489.p?skuId=4700489
This disc contains five episodes of the anime series Betterman. The episodes are titled "Echo", "Forye", "Poison", "Aqua", and "Worms". Each is presented in the original aspect ratio of 1.33:1. English and Japanese soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a text-free rendition of the closing credit animation sequence and an art gallery. This is a great release for any fan of the series.

I don't know anything about Vandread, but I'd question it in the same way.

They gradually shifted from 4:3 to 16:9 in early to mid 2000s.
If the black bars bother you, then buy a 4:3 CRT and look up youtube guides on how to connect it to your PC.
