Well I suppose that holds true for TV series, but movies have been in 16:9 for ages. For instance, I have a Project A-Ko laserdisc that's formatted in 16:9, but it's designed to run on a 4:3 TV so they gave it this funny letterbox job that has the movie displayed on the top 2/3 of the screen and the subtitles fill the bottom 1/3 of black space. Overall, I'd say you're completely safe with post-'05 anime. |

That Website said: Damn, will streaming 4k HD via the Internet be a viable option? | Not sure if this is a direct answer, but the earliest HD television anime I know of(?) is One Piece, which began HD on Episode 207, which aired in October 2004. There is probably earlier, but I don't know. |

| I only notice when watching 90's anime such as Sorcerer Hunters (1995) when you have the black banners on each side of the screen. And as OP mentioned, it can get annoying after a while. The first season of Gintama was 4:3 i think as that had the black banner sections on either side of the screen as well. I've heard that at the beginning of the 2nd season (ep 201) Gintoki's hands appear to come out of the tv and widen the screen to 16:9 proportions. Am planning on starting Gintama S2 soon, can't wait! |

| You can switch the Aspect Ratio mode in VLC easily, from 4:3 to 16:9, 16:10 and vice versa, but once you do so you should be prerpared to watch it like: |

| They gradually shifted from 4:3 to 16:9 in early to mid 2000s. If the black bars bother you, then buy a 4:3 CRT and look up youtube guides on how to connect it to your PC. |
