The manga had a 10 year recap as well, but it wasn't as involved as the anime's getting to be. There's almost too much explanation instead of just giving us the cliffnotes like the manga did. I mean, it's nice that they're explaining things, but you can tell that they're purposely dragging this out. |

| This episode was pretty funny haha, lol at the random trapholes that the trio built. Next episode doesn't look so good, it could turn a bit draggy, given that after that flashback it's primespot for more fillers again. |

| As the last filler episodes were before the crew even broke up I think I can forgive a few in the middle of this arc lol. I imagine they would ideally want the fishman island arc in the manga to be nearly finished before they start it in the anime so they may want to drag this out a bit. |

| This episode was ok, I see that the producers expanded 3 pages from chapter 585 of the manga into one full episode, but I hope they won't drag this flashback out for too long. |

| Awh, Dadan xD so sweet. I wish she could have her calm, guardian moments with the boys without their pranks/mischief getting in the way haha. | Blushing Ace melted my heart why Oda, why oh why did you kill this beautiful boy I just- Dadan is tsundere mama for sure...I laughed when she got caught in their booby trap hahaha What I love most about this episode by far though is seeing Ace, Sabo and Luffy playing pirates though. It just acted as a reminder that despite their hardships, street smarts and exceptional skills/abilities, they're still a bunch of spirited kids with boundless imagination and energy. Ace in particular actually- it really is a joy to watch him come out of his (rather prickly) shell! 😌 |

| I had no clue they were expanding on the manga like this until I checked and saw this whole episode was based on a montage sequence without any words. I wouldn't have ever thought that and I think I prefer it like they did in the anime. It's nice to get some down time with boys like this. It was so fun to see how the three would fight the gangs in the town through distractions, sneak attacks, and Luffy's power despite his amateur skill with it. The way they brought the deer home and fought over the food and had so much fun in the bath was really sweet. It was nice to see how happy Ace genuinely was after how subdued and angry he was in the beginning. Despite his and Sabo's upbringing they feel like normal, silly, happy kids when they're together. The three are little balls of energy with unending ambition and have trust and respect for each other. An episode like this built that up well. Especially seeing them roleplay in the hideout! I was smiling ear to ear when Makino and the mayor showed up to see Luffy and his new brothers. Sabo was eager to go see the pretty lady and Ace didn't wanna show weakness and put trust in a stranger but he went out with his bros anyways. Luffy said he only had Garp, but Makino and the mayor to this day look forward to seeing news reports on him. He was alone when Garp left him in the Dadan family but he definitely has people that care about him in his life! Garp is quite perplexing. He's leaving his boys with mountain bandits to turn them into strong navy men. He must have a lot of faith in Dadan but even then I found him hitting her and saying she needs to educate them better unfair. They're your boys man!! You're leaving them with a bandit and demanding she shapes them into good navy marines?? He may be busy as a vice admiral and maybe Dadan is the only person he has that he trusts with raising Luffy and Ace but it's still perplexing so I'm curious on where his motivations lay here. It was also nice to see Dadan's care for the boys, when she was alone she was finally able to smile at their peaceful sleeping and she even worried about Luffy catching a cold!!! She may rationalize it with "I don't wanna be beat up by Garp" but she really just didn't wanna leave the boys out in the rain. She even sat outside waiting for them!! Like, she's a sweet lady. I feel this is leading up to a moment when Dadan defends them from Bluejam! P.S. If we see Sabo as an adult he is going to have the best cook in the world on his crew... |
| I can definitely understand why they're blushing over Makino. She's such a cutie~ Garp delivering his fists of love to the boys was hilarious too. Watching Ace, Sabo, and Luffy act out their dream in the hideout they made themselves was surprisingly touching for me. Seeing them being happy is definitely something I need to see more of. Dadan may have said horrible things when she was drunk but she really cares for the boys deep within. I hope that Ace would notice and understand her change of heart soon. |
