I know some chess matches have been done already yet would one entirely based on chess matches be a great one?
Which anime that you remember have featured chess matches?
Was it well done, crappy or ok for what it was?

Highschool DxD is an anime talking about Chess piece does It count ^^

The only Chess game I remember would be in Code Geass and No Game No Life and they were crappy (Not sure if we even saw It in NGNL)

Yeah It would be good since we already have Amazing Slice of Life about Go , Shogi, mahjong etc... So why not with Chess.

The chess game portion of that episode in No Game No Life was already taking place in the fantasy gaming world the siblings were isekai'd to so it was more like "wizard's chess" in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone with the actual personifications of the traditional pieces coming to life in real battle than an actual regular chess match.

But apart from that, I don't know if I've ever seen or even heard chess featured or mentioned in anime (obviously not counting shogi, which is sometimes treated as like a kind of chess equivalent in translations for Western audiences) apart from maybe just a passing line or two.

I agree that it's really scarce, in live action north american films and tv there are a fair share of them though.  I picture it super serious like akagi with slice of life/comedy between matches though so many may not like that style anime lol.

Sangatsu no Lion invented shogi, which appears to be a Japanese version of Chess, only more complicated, and they managed to make something epic even out of it, the "Burnt Field" episode is a masterpiece. So I believe an anime about chess could be really good, as long as it is visually interesting.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

I think I would like a chess based anime too. The main reason I didn't watch a lot of 3-gatsu no Lion is because I couldn't understand Shogi at all. Same with Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru. I think I would have been more interested in these shows if I knew what was happening. Then again anime is mainly for Japanese citizens so traditional Japanese games rather than the (now considered) western sport of Chess may feature as a main thing in a show. But we did get anime based on western gambling concepts so it could go either way.
Best ending line in anime history = "My name is Saiki Kusuo. I am a psychic."

You may have it the nail on the head as to why it hasn't been done yet, it's unfortunate indeed.

Maybe but it needs a really good MC without any kind of emotional/psychological flaws and really focused in winning because money/achievements/fame and not some shitt* ass promise he made to his best friend/grandpa, relationships/family/friends should all be on 2nd place in the show, we don't need another melodramatic teen wannabe psychological show, no side stories from secondary characters, PPTA slightly grasped the psychological side of competing but the motivations and the level of competing from the characters (highschool) was a bit meh, also the show should be short (12-24 ep) since the show wouldn't be a character study neither melodramatic, so there is only a certain quantity of chess you would want to watch before getting bored.

Agreed.  That's why I wouldn't like one based on bobby fisher, it would have to be fictional character wise.  Using historic games and moves could be very cool though.  Drama and intensity would definitely be needed for internal dialogue, I wonder if an narrator like in akagi would be useful or not?

An anime about a Shogi player was one of the best things I've seen so a chess version should have no problem working

There are many occasions throughout the anime where they play real chess, especially in the movie where they basically play it the entire time.

Oh yes. Unlike shogi, every second spent showing a match wouldn't be a waste of time since I'd be able to understand what's going on. This is a personal gripe since both chess and shogi aren't much enjoyable to watch without a deep understanding of the strategies (just knowing the rules isn't enough).

As long as it isn't used as cheaply as it is in Code Geass and treats chess with respect (like 3-gatsu does with shogi) then it could be good.

Yeah, it would be good. There have been plenty of anime and manga about board games to show that it works. And Sangatsu no Lion is basically about japanese chess and it was amazing.

Chess in particular as a setting wouldn’t have a particular appeal to me, but Chihayafuru proved you can make competitive watching-paint-dry interesting if done well

I'm not that interested in Chess, but yes. It could be a good idea. Anything that people find entertaining to watch in real life can be made into a good anime if it's done right. I think the existence and popularity of sports anime and manga like Haikyuu and Blue Lock, and boxing anime like Hajime no Ippo and Megalobox are proof of this.

It would be interesting, but not sure if I'd be able to enjoy it at all, since I've been pretty much robbed of my ability to play chess due to the strong medicine I have to take every single day and the disability I suffer from. I can watch it, but it's pretty much similar to playing Patchesi (Mensch ärgere dich nicht in German) to me at the moment. Maybe if I can one day go without my medicine it'll be better again..

Kindaichi case files..

The case files of akechi (when he was training with fbi in Los Angeles) ..the case actually took place in Las Vegas
It featured some excellent chess, lengthy and detailed between several players going for the grand masters title..

Plus murder mystery, the trick entirely based on chess moves ...

It would be as interesting as an anime about shogi, because those games are quite similar.
And we already have at least two of those, which are quite good.

I don't know much about chess, but is chess even a thing in japan?
Having shogi as (one of) your country most popular board game I think will hinder the popularity of relatively very similar games.
And if most japanese don't know and not interested in chess, then making anime or manga of it is not a really good idea.

3-gatsu no Lion features shōgi, which is a variant of chess, and Hikaru no Go revolves around, well, go, which is close enough.

There was actually one I used to watch as a kid, I think it was called chess master or something. It had this cool concept of humanizing each pieces every time it makes a move to attack making the board as if it was an actual battlefield. The caveat though is that the show is obviously meant for children and is already very old, so I don't think the writing was its primary focus. Perhaps people would love it as a child, but watching it in your teenage years or above? yeah I don't think so.

Edit: It was actually called Xiang qi wang which is a direct translation to Chinese Chess master.

Absolutely. There's been an anime for basically every sport that exists on Earth, but surprisingly no chess, and that annoys me.

We saw chess rise in popularity after Queen's Gambit series and pandemic brought chess into streaming culture as basically an esport. Hope that trend doesn't die out and it reaches Japan as well, as I don't think it's that popular of a game there as much as their own stuff, like shogi.
