Since it's an international website, I was wondering what are the languages MAL users speak and if anyone had tips to learn new languages. | My native language is Norwegian, which is more or less mutually intelligible with Danish and Swedish, so I guess you could say that I understand those as well. I also know English obviously, and a little bit of German. I also know some basic Japanese, i.e, know all the kana, some kanji, basic sentences, etc. I got bored with it though, so I haven't practiced it much lately. |

I can read pretty good but I don't understand anything lol. I want to learn Korean/Danish in the future, so we'll see. |
| English - I usually use this for conversation with my family and brother, even though its my second language. Bengali - Mother tongue and native language. Hindi - A bit broken, but I can still speak it. |

| -> Swedish (maternal language, large vocabulary, nearly perfect language sense, 100 % fluent) -> French (paternal language, great language sense but not as good as my Swedish language sense + my vocabulary isn't quite as big. I'm still fluent though) -> English (1st foreign language, learned it about four years ago, my reading, listening and writing skills are great but I don't really like speaking the language) -> Danish (I understand most of it since it's more or less mutually intelligible with Swedish) -> Norwegian (I understand most of it since it's more or less mutually intelligible with Swedish) -> Italian (2nd foreign language, I know basic shit but I'm not very good at it so I'm gonna keep practicing) -> Japanese (3rd foreign language, very basic shit, still learning) -> Russian (4th foreign language, jack shit, still learning) -> Indonesian, Serbian, Hungarian, Korean, Chinese, Icelandic (other foreign languages, I haven't even started learning them yet but I will eventually) |

| French - Mother tongue Dutch - Technically second language, since I studied it for 11 years at school (it's Belgium second official language), but I'm still not fluent English - Much better than my dutch, mandatory for scientific research Japanese - just starting to study @HooHiraiBunny : Agreed, it's painful how most French people suck at their own language. I did a student job correcting articles for a newspaper, even journalists can't make three sentences without a grammatical mistake even though it's their job to write. |

Still working out with my English though, can comprehend almost everything written in English and quite good at writing but not that good at speaking, cant spell one word correctly. |

But there are still decent people living there, some of them helped me when I was in need, well I didn't get the same help as abroad but I still met some nice persons. Lets say that the general mentality of French persons doesn't seem exactly nice, and I could myself see some of it, but I admit I myself tend to criticize Parisians Haha Few days ago, my flatmate said that people from my region were said in other regions to be a bunch of asses, which was a big surprise to me. Apparently, even the Starbucks leader said shit about us (Has he ever come here? O__o) since for years they didn't want to build one here Lol I never really agree with generalizations since those things really depend on people, even if the envirnment influences in such way that we can find some of those things that are similar. |

| I speak Dutch and English fluently. My German is also very good but nowhere near my Dutch or English. I also learned French for a while and I felt at the time I could have a normal conversation with someone while now all I can remember is some basic sentences and cursewords :(. |

Never had any problems. And despite the stereotypes, yes store owners and such actually did speak English to me. Even the ones who struggled at it tried to communicate in English with me even before I've opened my mouth. Everyone has their own experience. |

| German (native) English (fluent - learned it for years in school and I use it often in the internet) French (learned it for 3 years in school but forgot everything already because I never needed it and I am too lazy to learn ... more complicatd they have those accents ^´and `which makes it harder to memorize vocabulary Japanese (only little bit/beginner - too lazy to learn mainly because of the Kanji and I do not only want to learn how to speak but also how to write and read) Since I am from an area in Germany where we speak dialect that is similar "Pennsylvania German/Dutch" I can understand those people a bit. It is a mix of English and that German dialect (even though a lot of people call it "dutch"). But I can't speak it myself - I don't know where to use the German dialect words and where to use English (for stuff where there did not exist German words they use English). | Finnish - native language. English - mandatory subject since 3rd grade. It doesn't really feel that foreign language anymore, since it's in daily usage. French - studied it voluntarily since the 4th grade and all through high school, but never really got immersed in the language - all the entertainment I watched/listened/read was mostly in English. But if my life was at stake, I guess I could muster up a few sentences. Swedish - mandatory subject since the 7th grade. I like Swedish a lot more than French, since I actually feel like I can comprehensively speak it. And learning it felt a great deal easier because of its relation to English (both Germanic languages). Japanese - it's a wip for life!I know the most common phrases and also a small vocabulary thanks to all the anime. I feel like the pronunciation and speaking are relatively easy, but the writing system... might be too much for me :P |

| As far as only Speaking is concerned, I'm using in over 80% of my Time only German, which is my paternal Language and the de facto official Language of the Place where I live. The Rest includes to ~17% Romanian for which I'm not fluent and have basically just the Vocabulary of a small Child and very seldom, possibly broken English on a theoretically fluent-sounding Level. Since I'm not Asian, I can't speak Engrish, but it's very possible that my English contains Corruption, even if it's far from being broken English, since I try to imitate the Recieved Pronounciation (RP) as much as possible, whereas Mixes because of Americanisms are bound to happen. I'd like to graduate my English to more Anglish, the purer Form of English.
