I do mostly just to keep track of how fast I'm watching anime. The anime challenge requires you to put the dates so that's another reason. For some reason it uses MAL's time to determine which day it is but it uses your computer's clock to put in today's date which means that often I will say that I started an anime that day and it says that I've been watching it for two days. When I put in the completed date it fixes this.

I always do. If it's a series I add it to my currently watching after the first episode with the starting date so it adds the end date automatically once you reach the last episode. For movies and stuff I always just put the date as well. Since the 'Insert today' button exists it's not really much effort. And it makes me able to check which anime I finished when going back all the way to early 2010, making it 95% of my list. Since I love stats the extra utility you get out of MALGraph is definitely worth the small effort. Though I already entered the dates before I know of MALGraph just because the option was there and it quickly became a habit.
I probably regret this post by now.

I don't, since by the time I made this list I already had 1,000+ titles and didn't keep track of when I watched them over my 20 years of being a fan. It would be way too much work to go back and plug dates in for everything.

I always do. And I joined the site about 4 months after I started watching anime, so most of my entries have exact dates (and even the most of the ones that don't, have at least the month and/or year).

I do, since the beginning of this year all the anime I watched have dates assigned. I simply like to know at what pace I watch anime.

I always does that and it's very easy to put a date, But If I don't remember the exact date that I watch then I leave it blank but most likely I remember the year when I watch but forget about the month and day.

What... its not automatic , you have to do it manually for each anime

Yes it is. I never put the date in Walkure Romanze I finished yesterday, only pressed the episodes buttons with + and - to start and end the anime.

Start Date: Feb 29, 2016
End Date: Mar 3, 2016

I do it for the anime I started/finished watching after I joined MAL. I think it's somewhat interesting to know the specific dates of when I started and finished watching an anime. Funny thing is that you don't even have to put in the dates to know when you started or finished an anime; you can just click on the episode details, that show you whenever you updated your progress with the anime.

I don't. It isn't done automatically and it's not something that I particularly care about.
I also won't be able to do it for the series that I had already seen before I joined MAL; I'd end up with a lot of series missing the start and end date. I'd hate that to happen - either everything must have the dates or nothing will have the dates.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

Some people do, but not all.
I don't care about it.
I don't have any use for adding the date I started/finished something, so it's pointless.

I may start doing it in the future, only for anime that i remember when i started and finished watching, but it's not at my plans.

I never do. Too much work. Looking at my list, it seems it records them automatically half the time, and doesn't the other half???? idk.

Angel Beats had no date recorded.
Akame ga Kill had the start date automatic, but the end date was blank.
Akuma no Riddle had the finish date automatic, but the start date blank.
Aku no Hana had both automatically recorded.

Hypothesis time: based on how I remember watching these shows, if you record one ONE episode at a time, it does it automatically. When I started watching Akame ga Kill, I recorded only the first episode as watched when I put it on my list. In contrast, I watched the first few episodes of Akuma no Riddle in a chunk, then followed it as it aired and put the last episode in by itself. Aku no Hana I followed it as it aired, so it has both recorded. Angel Beats I just marked as complete, as I had watched it before I joined this site, so it has neither recorded.

Interesting.

I write down my thoughts on various shows into a journal, so it happens anyway. I also keep the date of when I added it to my list and when I finish it to my spreadsheet.

Yup, I do if I remember to. Sometimes its funny/weird to go back to the list years later and get nostalgic about time. It kind of amazes me also.

Most of my shows starting and finishing date got added automatically. Dunno how tho.
I'm guessing you have to use the +1 button for all the shows. ( or use a good MAL app / client )

I started to do it, because when you take years to finish an anime or something, it's pretty cool to know when you started it [so you can calculate how many years you took (as a person) meanwhile :'( ] but it's something really annoying to do. I also wish it'd be automatic.

When I joined MAL, I had already watched circa 70 anime (and a lot of us have been watching anime before MAL existed) and as such it would be impossible to remember the starting and finishing dates of all the anime I have watched... so what's the point filling in this field for the new ones only...

When I first joined MAL I had already seen somewhere around 200-300 series which I didn't remember all the dates for. Everything after those initial entries I've always added the dates.

Like I explained in my prevous post it only puts in the end date automatically if you manually add the starting date before and then complete it via the + buttons. Most people just add the whole series when they finish it and in this case it doesn't automatically add anything.
I probably regret this post by now.
