I remember years ago, when I actively started using the Internet, how new terms like lol, or noob annoyed me, because they simply weren't something that people use IRL (see? | Mid does not mean bad, its short for middle, implying that it's average, and based on your provided examples, it sounds like someone is using it as a roundabout way of calling something overrated. | I think there is nothing wrong with someone calling something mid. Just some new lingo. Eventually new slang will supplant it. That's just how language goes. Obviously if their criticism stops at them calling a show mid without any explanation, you should definitely just ignore them, even if you agree with them. |

| It's not a valid criticism but it's a valid opinion, just like saying something is overrated, pretentious etc, you choose. Criticism is actually going into the reasons you dislike something, but if they are just saying it's mid in response to the amount of hype/praise the anime got I see no problem with it. Also, if it get anime fans triggered then it's a big plus. |
