Damn, Katakuri's got guts for stabbing himself with that spear. Frampe looked pretty disappointed after seeing that.

I can't wait for this next battle between him and Luffy. A battle with pride!

I found the chapter!

I wonder how much damage Katukuri did to himself because I'm not sure if Luffy should win this fight. His opponent is just so much superior to him it would be ridiculous if he improved enough to win.

nice, this is the moment we've been waiting for!
it seems like there's a theme with some of our Charlotte Family characters, being picked on for their appearances from childhood. Pudding was the same way.
I love that Katakuri threw away his scarf for this fight and allowed everyone to see his fangs, kind of like throwing away his pride for his opponent. and he finally decided to recognize Luffy as a strong opponent. this should be good!

Oh my god, I love Katakuri SO MUCH and its no wonder he's my most favorite of the Charlotte Family and it would be cool for him become friendly rivals with Luffy.

Also SO HAPPY they shut that annoying little fucking bitch UP, like damn she's up there in the Top Most Hated, along with those D-Bag World Nobles.

Not to mention a lot of respect for Katakuri.

....................Chapter 893 response ...............................

Damn Dogtooth is by far my favourite character to date!! He is such a bad ass. He has such a good character, I hope he isn't discarded at the end of this battle. I want him to have a return at some point down the line.

For all intents and purposes this arc has been interesting. It lulled for a while, and I will admit it would have been great if they had of just escaped, but I am enjoying this fight so I am not to unhappy with the way things have progressed.

Dat Haoshoku Haki.

This is how you build up the climax for a fight, awesome chapter.

Katakuris character is pretty much matching up with his badass design now.

And lol, Flampe was absolutely obnoxious along with her twisted view.

Katakuri is actually pretty noble when it comes to fighting. He didn't like the underhanded tricks and the unwanted assistance, and even stabbed himself to even the playing field a little bit. I like and respect him even more now. That Haki clash was awesome as well, looking forward to the rest of his fight against Luffy.

Also, Flampe has been in the story for like 3 chapters now and I already want her dead. Oda, please make it happen.

This is by far the DUMBEST chapter of this arc! Flambe and co. are simply there to make Katakuri injure himself?! She SPITS on him because his MOUTH is weird when the rest of her family look like something out of Dr. Seuss? Where is the Katakuri who wanted to end it quickly and told Luffy to keep his hands off his family?! He's here screwing around just out of respect?! For the man who tried to murder his mother?!?!? What the fuck is this?!

and this little sister..Flambe....bitch like rest of the family....respect towards her brother....gone just because of his face......and she say she was his number 1 fan.....more like Rapid Fan-GIRL, the kind that gets Restraining Orders from their Idols....

Oh...Luffy starts to get close in OH....this fight is going to hit next level soon.

There is nothing wrong with using characters in this way to make an impact on the plot. This solution is actually the most satisfying one. Luffy won't beat an overpowerd opponent because of an "asspull" powerup, but because he is now at his level due to his opponent injuring himself out of honor, because he gained respect for him during their multiple hour long fight. And this is also typical battle manga stuff so why people like you get upset over this is beyond me. Also Katakuri only wanted to end the fight quickly at the beginning because of his Merienda and how has his attitude towards people wanting to harm his siblings changed in any way? How the hell is he "screwing" around? Did you even read the previous chapters? Or are you just trying too hard at this point to be a contrarian like this funny Isterio guy? Jesus Christ...

So that stab wasn't just an observation haki vision. I still think it was a bit of an exaggeration that Luffy was still able to stand, or even start to fight again with an injury like that, but well... It's a shounen manga after all, and the badassery of this episode heavily counterweighs it.

So this was the reason why Flampe was there. That's why she was important for the story.

Her personality was already annoying. I wasn't expecting her to act like that. She ADORED Katakuri, and when she saw his mouth, she despised him. No wonder everyone gets disgusted by contradicting behavior. I was expecting Katakuri to brutally punch her in the face, or kill her, but apparently, no. Family is important. She still deserved it a lot.

So far Katakuri didn't seem that interested in the fight, but when his honor was at stake, he went ahead, and pierced his stomach. He realized how strong Luffy is that he basically... fought a two-front war relatively well. Katakuri's change seemed so sudden, but it was still well-written imo.

An asspull power-up would have been too much, but making Katakuri weaker seems like a good way to handle things. Good job, Oda!

Some good news: There IS chapter next week, apparently. I got used to having to wait another week whenever there's an enormous cliffhanger. I seriously hope we get to see the end of the fight next week, and the chapter's going to be focused on only the fight.

>The rest of her family look like something out of Dr. Seuss.

1. No, her siblings are relatively normal looking humans besides the Oda style exaggeration of size and proportions, Katakuri's scar and teeth aren't normal for a human. Before you bring it up I'm excluding the Long Neck, Arm, and Legs siblings since those are from different races and their features are entirely natural. Let me give you an analogy, what would the common person consider more disgusting, an entirely regular looking non human animal species, or a human with extremely rare physical abnormalities?

2. Did you forget about Pudding's backstory, discrimination for looking weird is not unprecedented in the family, in fact you can see it happened to Kata's childhood in this chapter.

3. The point of the matter is that Katakuri wasn't the perfect looking ideal brother she thought she had.

>Katakuri wanted to end this quickly.

1. He still wants to, he just doesn't like feeling like he won because of outside interference.

2. Kata's biggest character flaw is based on pride and being the ideal fighter. Fairly won duels are a staple of such.

OMG, It just dawned on me a reason Oda decided to give Katakuri the Color of the Conqueror even though he isn't a leader right now.

Once Big Mom finally falls in a future arc, Katakuri will be the one who takes charge of the Big Mom Pirates, and maybe even become a Yonko himself.

Calling it right now, the EOS Yonko will be Luffy, Blackbeard, Katakuri and someone from the Beast Pirates we don't know about yet. Luffy will replace Shanks just like Blackbeard replaced Whitebeard.

BB's not gonna be a Yonko by the end of the series. A fight between him and Luffy was obvious ever since Luffy found out he was the one to beat Ace. Beast pirates are probably gonna get annihilated, since we already know Luffy, Law and co are planning to take them down. And if we take Jack as the benchmark, the BP commanders don't really seem that impressive.

This new chapter really did destroy almost everything we know about Katakuri, and after all the effort Oda put into personifying him, it is somewhat disappointing.
We get it, it is manly it is honorable. But uptill now, everything we know about Katakuri paints him as a no nonsense, serious person. He is not one to take risk as he clearly wants to kill Luffy before he becomes a threat to Big Mom, but now he purposely handicap himself just because he does not like the way he would win if he don't ? I mean that is some huge writing inconsistencies here. If he had admonished Flampe and told her not to continue to interfere that might be more believable. I mean this guy has no problem telling his subordinates to burn the Thousand Sunny into ash when Luffy is helpless, or to set up a situation whereby the Strawhats are in a incredible disadvantage, being pursued by Big Mom through the Seducing Woods and having to face both him and Prospero when they came out on the other side.
If Oda is inserting this duex ex machina plot just so that Luffy can win, then this is poor writing on his part.

You're making the same mistake Brûlée and Flambé did, thinking you knew everything about the character.

It's not a handicap because it doesn't give Luffy an advantage over Katakuri, it's just that Kata is trying to level the playing field so the victory doesn't feel cheap. Actually it would be an even bigger Deus ex Machina if Luffy manages to beat him in such a bad state while Katakuri is mostly fine.

This chapter is about developing Katakuri's own self-acceptance and independency from his family's expectations, notice how he doesn't care about his mouth being seen and doesn't kill his sister when a few hours ago he killed the chefs who saw him.

Katakuri's role in the story is just beginning.

In case you have not noticed, Oda has been showing Katakuri starting to acknowledge Luffy's ability the past 2 chapters. Katakuri's role in the story is just beginning.

Problem is how victory is achieve matters little for Katakuri if that is what we are to believe when we read through the previous chapters. Katakuri has no problems with ganging up on the Strawhats if he can as he always tries to force the Strawhats into a confrontation against overwhelming odds.
There is no rule stating that Strawhat must defeat every single opponent he comes across as we have seen with Megalan. So I have no problem if Luffy does not defeat Katakuri but puts him in a situation whereby he is unable to pursue him.
Katakuri can as a character always learn self-acceptance and independency without having to purposely botch up a fight that has much greater implications than just him winning dishonorably or losing his self-image. As he has so acknowledged himself.
While I don't claim that I will completely know everything about a fictional character, I do have a problem when the writer becomes lazy or erroneous and expects the readers to swallow it all without any complaints.

What about all the inner monologue of Katakuri thinking that he must kill off Luffy before his observation haki becomes stronger?

And that is what Oda is exactly doing right now, he goes out of his way to describe Katakuri, but now he is doing a 180 on him with no reasonable explanation other than "Katakuri just doesn't like that now" and hope that the more perceptive viewers won't wonder about it and just nod their heads along with it.

If Katakuri acknowledges Luffy's ability, then he should be trying to kill off Luffy even harder. Seeing as he also views Luffy as a potential threat to Big Mom and the potential implications it will bring. Viewing somebody as an equal does not mean that one must handicap oneself for the notion of honor and self-satisfaction especially if the character was explicitly described as being the opposite of that (serious, efficient). The irony here is that this chapter is actually making Katakuri look more like a 2 dimension character typical in a shonen manga.
Though I agree with you on the last paragraph, guess I am expecting too much from a shonen manga series that started off in the 90s.

Katakuri handicapped himself because it makes up for the unfair outside advantage he got in the fight. Luffy even said that it was his own fault for not dodging Flambe's attack, but Katakuri insisted because he respects his fighting ability.

Also I think you missed the entire point of Katakuri. All of that seriousness and perfection was just how he wanted everyone to perceive him, but he's actually just as flawed as anyone else. You sound like Flambe right now lol.

If Oda didn't add flaws to his character, he would've just been a boring "2 dimensional character typical in a shonen manga" with a badass design.

To put it into perspective, I have a gut feeling that the Strawhats are going to beat Big Mom by exploiting her eating disorder, making her unable to fight efficiently or at full strength.
And, I have absolutely no problem with that happening. Big Mom has always been described as someone who has absolutely no control in one of her fits.
However, if somehow Oda decides to make it so that Big Mom was not effected by her eating habits when the Strawhats beat her. Then I can roll my eyeballs at that sudden character break.

I have posted an answer to similar reply above. So I will spare us both the torture of text reading and simplify what I said :

It is lazy and poor writing if an author spends much time describing a character, and then goes off script with no reasonable explanation other than "character development".

To put it another way, Katakuri can tell Flampe to stop interfering, expose his face to her and then knock her out with Haki WITHOUT stabbing himself. He would then be acknowledging his flaws but doing it in such a way that he basically gives a free pass to Luffy. The only plausible reason that Oda inserted this was just so that there can be at least a acceptable if unreasonable reason why Luffy would win in the end, no to mention it goes well with the whole shonen manga theme.

Personally, Oda could have just depicted Katakuri like Cracker but with a dose of pride and honour and I would not have complained. But instead he tried to make Katakuri look realistic, but flopped in the end.

Now it has became a battle of pride, but that only gave Luffy a fighting chance since he stabbed himself. I think Oda knew people were sceptical about Luffy coming out winning after being beaten so badly and were questioning the logic of his win( hence the handicap).

But as for me I wanted to win even if facing those odds( he won facing them against Lucci), even in life logic doesn't always apply.

Katakuri gets more respect from me after this chapter. But despite how manly this fight might get, it can't be manlier than Senor Pink vs Franky.
Mankind knew that they cannot change society. So instead of reflecting on themselves, they blamed the beasts.

One Piece is always dumb and this is just more of it.
But, Katakuri became very likeable in an irrational honor motivated way.
(Mind you he´s from a culture who practiced Harakiri for centuries).
Flambe is a worthless character who was only setup to be a one-dimensional bully, that´s lazy, but it´s for the purpose of making Katakuri more likeable.
As far as rational goes, look at argument 1

Chapter was a 4/5. Katakuri is by far my favorite character of this arc, including all the Strawhats. He had alot of development in the short amount of time he had and is a rue of cool character with funny quirks, that keep adding to his personality.
Overall he shines mostly because everyone around him is so godawful
and I don´t mean that from an in universe pov, but from the perspective of a writer.

That´s more than unlikely.

1. Oda came up with the Supernovas at random just to spice up the story.
2. The Yonkou are nothing more than obstacles for Luffy to overcome.
3 The Yonkou system isn´t a requirement, it´s at least implied that when Roger was around this wasn´t a thing.
4.Rayleigh isn´t a Yonkou and has this ability.
5. This confimed Zorro and the Marines as conqueror Haki contestants. There is no requirement to be in a leading position to utilize said ability.

Unlikely, except Oda pulls a Hiro Mashima, makes Katakuri take out Big mom into a Yonko and make Luffy leave with a draw between the two.

Chance of happening below 1%
