THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Well, they sure didn't waste much time getting right into the meat of the action with the war elements. Not to mention, that monstrous transformation...

Looks like we got introduction of some of the main characters so far like Hank, Elaine, etc. Lisa and her fan service though. The anime adaptation seems to retain the violence of the manga so far. Idk, maybe this has some potential, will have to see. I heard the show will be a one cour.

Mmmmm, not bad, not bad...Better that Fairy Gone first episode at least xD.
All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. Our strength shall serve as a luminous sun toward which all intelligence may blossom. And the impervious shelter beneath which you will prosper. However, for those who refuse our offer and cling to their western animation ways… For you, there will be great wrath.

What a happy little squad you got there ... it would be shame if all of them died some horrible death or turn psycho ... props to the studio for not using cgi for the beasts. The show looks good, can't really tell much fot now. Also i hate when anime characters start to laugh out of nowhere.

I kinda understand many people compare this to Fairy Gone but Katsuke has
Pros: Much hotter guys, and occasionally in shirtless. And plus they can turn into many forms of beasts many people fantasized about
Cons: Much more violence, this could be pros to many, but I detest violence. Such a waste of hot guys

Pretty cool first episode!

Right off the bat, we’re into a grim battlefield after the info dump and the Incarnates make their entrance. Badass for sure, and that demonstration of insane power from Hank to the busty lieutenant was amazing, but obviously out of human hands so it’s no wonder the project would backfire. Fine depiction of that, really. It’s sad that Elaine is gone and Cain is on the run plus some of the Beasts with their sanity totally gone, things aren’t looking too bright for Capt. It’s amazing that the incarnates weren’t CGI-based and the Sound Department so far is pretty darn good! Funny how the two sides are back to one now, is it because of a greater threat but given the hostility they (or rather that busty lieutenant representing the military) showed it’s most likely not. Hopefully, they’ll touch on this on a later note!

Looking forward to more! By the way, is it just me or does that girl look a lot like Elaine (even the same eye colour and design)? Could it be her younger sister?

Edit: Never mind, I think I’ve figured out who the girl is. “He killed my father” and “Avenge” pretty much gives it away and not to mention the visuals too, how did I not realise earlier?

Nice episode. But the name choosing makes me wonder if the writer is trolling us:
patria - literally means homeland
henrietta- female name
Cain - the only proper name killer of Abel
Somnium - Sleep -ium
Renescastle - Rennes Castle

I this trolling or just bad name choice?

Half the episode was just a slideshow, what will the show look like in 8 more episodes?

And the storytelling pacing was so bad. They thre us into this huge battle, which was too short, then showed a lot of scenes celebrating and someone turning into a monster and dying and a motivational speech in like the first 15 minutes. No context, no reason to care about these people suffering or being happy.

Interesting plot but idk why Cain didn't finish the captain off, is there maybe a reason to it?

Surprised that the source material is from 2014, the feel of the show and characters was so oldschool-ish.

I didn't care much about the war or the little romance going on there. The decision Elaine made and the betrayal of Cain piqued my interest, but of course, he has to laugh like a maniac the next second and who could have thought, they all are still alive. Hank is driven by revenge and the Incarnates are going insane, how boring...

I'm not sure I want to watch this but I'll give it a few more episodes.

That was awesome! We got right into the action and it was violent, ridiculous, and so good.

It was like X-Men on steroids fighting in the civil war. I don't care if it's nonsense, it's too entertaining to not watch. All of the incarnates are friendly with one another, they're very powerful but it comes at a price of symptoms of... something. The giant snake dude became possessed by his arte and killed people on his own side. That looks to be the fate of incarnates. Hank had a crush on Elaine, shit went down at the end of the episode. Why does the big boob woman look like she just walked off the set of a porno?

Holy fuck I loved the first ep! I'm definitely gonna finish this shit up! animation, voice acting, setting are all great.
Speaking of voice acting, the voice actors here are all top notch.
Hank- Katsuyuki (man I missed his voice so fcking much!)
Nancy- Kakuma Ai
Cain- Nakamura Yuichi
Elaine- Mamiko Noto (but why the fck does her character die on the 1st ep!)
Elizabeth- Sakamoto Maaya (Ruler, Shinobu)
Cloud- Ishikawa Kaito (Naofumi, Sakuta)
Riser- Hikasa Yoko
Millialia- Ichinose Kana (Ichigooo and she played the FMC on fairy gone)
Also..

Hank's gonna own all of them, the man can use Ultra Instinct.

I must be missing something because this episode seemed terrible to me. Awkward pacing, a lot of shit happening in the background at incredibly fast pace, lots of death flags, obvious betrayal, forced comedy and what not. What could have been build in 2 or 3 episodes was destroyed in a single one.

Hopefully this doesn't remain the same for the rest of the season because I was really looking forward to this when I saw the pv. It would be sad if it ends up being Fairy Gone 2.0.

I love how roller coaster-like this first episode was!
You got good war scene in the beginning, gorey scene, bomb and guns, but also happy squad and little romance
not to mention I love all monsters didn't CGI-ed, and I realize this anime has same monster designer and music composer as Dororo...
hope it will be better, I can't wait to see Schaal

More or less how I felt watching this. Saw people hyping this up as being substantially better than Fairy Gone, at least in terms of source material, but with the first episode it really doesn't seem to be delivering.

People working as screenwriters for anime need to pick up lessons on non-linear story telling. This whole episode was just 20 minutes of horribly forced exposition just to establish the setting, yet also crammed in plot developments in the process, and to top it all off threw a rollercoaster of mixed action, melodrama, and comedy. Visual mediums have so much potential in the show-not-tell department, why not make use of it? You're not forced to present to the audience events in chronological order, especially if they don't assist in the story telling by being arranged in this manner. And-then-this-happened approach to storytelling is not always appropriate.

Too much content pulling in too many different directions in too short a span of time. It would've been better structured into different parts. Condense the opening narrative exposition as much as possible and lead with the action scene in the same manner. You get an idea of what the setting looks like, two warring factions, one side clearly inferior, so on an so forth. Show it on-screen, and as a bonus you can just cut that element from the beginning narration and save screen time for something else. I don't need to hear the North as being the weaker of the two factions from the narrator, and then see it moments later in an action scene to affirm what I already know.

Conclude the action scene with the appearance of the titular "monsters" in action as the heroes of their army. Evidently the North, the weaker of the two factions, has something besides bodies to throw at the problem and thus pull ahead in the balance of power. But don't carry on with this plot-line for 20 mins, drop the beginning plot line and immediately transition into a later chronological segment of the narrative.

Show something else. Don't pile on action for the sake of it. Pacing is key, and putting a million divergent scenes into a blender to mix them together just hurts the narrative. And for fucks sake people need to stop killing off named characters in the opening episode and expecting any kind of real effect. Why does the viewer care about not one but TWO named characters dying in spectacular or otherwise shocking fashion? We have known them for all of one or two scenes, can barely fit names to faces, and don't feel invested enough in the characters to give half a fuck. The resulting death scene just feels forced. Better to develop the plot with the monster unit more and save the dramatic death for later if you want any real impact out of the deaths. Shoving all of this into the first episode makes for poor story telling.

Keep the captain killing a former comrade rampaging as the closing scene to the episode, but leave the viewer asking questions rather than being force fed answers. As of right now, we already know why. They all eventually turn crazy and murder people so they all have to die, the hunting and killing of these monsters is no longer a plot point with any uncertainty, mystery, or moral ambiguity around it. They have to go, and the MC is the one to carry this out. In an opening episode devoid of the same degree of force feeding of information, that closing scene with the killing of a monster stands as a far better hook for the viewer who is as of yet unaware as to why this took place.

If you tell someone more than they need to know right off the bat through exposition, you're counting on your later story telling to be strong enough on its own to not have the info-dump detract in any way. Do we have any reason to believe the execution of the story later on will be so well handled? Not really, the way the first episode played out is a strong indication this show will not deliver in that regard.

Probably won't drop only because I tend to watch things to the end, even if at times it results in devoting time to watching dumpster fires burn; but the bar is pretty god damn low right now and I see no reason to raise my expectations after that.

First, I'm extremely grateful they didn't rendered the Incarnates in CGI, let's hope the series keeps doing that for the remaining episodes. Second, I'm happy to see Katsuyuki Konishi having a lead role, it has been a while since he did have one. Third, Cain being evil was predictable, the cover of the anime showed him in main villain position, and what you can expect from someone with that name? Last, its a shame the doctor died in the first episode, she was pretty hot.

Overall I liked it. Not bad for being the first anime I watched of the season.

Wow, this was a pretty nice first episode. Not very original, but the Incarnates also reminded me of the fairies in Fairy Gone. Katsute's story is very captivating though and I immediately felt a connection with the characters. I am curious about the whereabouts of Cain and we saw a glimpse of Elaine Bluelake at the end. So where did she disappear? Interesting enough to keep me hyped about the next episode for sure! :)

Does MAPPA have a subscription on bad manga? Again - while the studio is good when it does original stuff - another anime where it seemed boring. The first episode was less interesting than Dororo. I expect the action to be a little bit fun - to be able to watch it. But probably boring plot and chars with just Hank hunting the other guys and no deeper plot/politics.

It was a pretty decent start though, I'll continue watching for now. Nice to see Mafumafu doing the OP (although it was used as an ED for this episode).

Think that's a 'dropped' from me, bruv. I dunno, it was doing alright until Elaine pulled a gun on Hank then all my hopes just fell, off a cliff, into the sea.

I kinda liked Hank at the start. A kind and compassionate leader who's a bit of a dork but ultimately ultimately worth following, except when it contradicts with his "if you go out of control I have no problem killing you" motto. Elaine was alright to until she pulled a fucking 180 and tried to kill everyone. I hate Cain, but I can't quite figure out how to verbalise why, because it has a lot to do with what I don't like about the show's premise.

I hope they find a better solution in the end that doesn't involve killing all your friends, and I hope Nancy turns out to be an interesting character. I really hope so, because I'm not gonna watch it.

It had a lot of twists and turns I didn't see coming. And, I was surprised how they used the US Civil War atmosphere as the backdrop for their war.

I wasn't interested in this show until a few days ago when I read the synopsis and I must say, this first episode really surprised me, I liked it a lot.

The action was great, the designs of the incarnates are really cool and their interactions were very fun, I wish we had followed this group longer.

Elaine... I was really liking you (extra points for Mamiko Noto)... WTF! Of course she's not dead, but I'm afraid for the role she'll have in the story.

Looks like in the next episode we'll meet our main girl, let's see what happens.

Yoo what? I mean we had some "predictable" elements in this episode for example I had an instant feeling that the cain dude would someday become evil or someshit.. Just the look in his eyes and the way he talks.. that was an easy catch.

But wow.. The episode moved extremely fast and the animation was nutty as hell, especially the ending! that scene was absolutely stunning combined with the amazing sounding song that played.

I'm not easily hooked by the first episode but this did it for me. This doesn't scream potential masterpiece or anything but I really like the premise and as long as the plot and the animation don't falter, I think this'll be an enjoyable ride

RaiRye, He didn't finish him off because he thought he was dead because that bullet kills the Incarnates in one bullet but for some reason he survived from the bullet. My guess is that he was strong that he survived from that.

Elaine killing everyone wasn't a 180, she literally was doing it to save her friends.
Plus, about your comment on Hanks' "I have no problem in killing you if you are out of control" motto, we don't know how much has passed since he became a Beast Hunter.
