my god the absolute feels this time around was unreal i swear, Subaru was well due an episode on his past/before he got isekai but hot DAMN i didn't expect it to be this heart wrenching, even if the world he's in is real or fake, you could more or less connect the dots to what type of person he was before. Also you can really see which characteristics he picked up from his parents xD

The guy just had the bar set wayyyyy to high for him in the form of trying to be like his father, so he decided to try and make himself stand out in other ways, but that was more or less his downfall. That probably led him to dropping out of school because people thought he was just plain weird in how he trys to stand himself out. But the amount of support his parents give him is amazing, actually touches my heart to see how supportive his parents were to his past situation and how understanding they are.

What really got the tears running for me, was the fact that everything Subaru said to his mom and dad this episode, was what he really wanted to say to his real parents but never could, the knowing fact that those words of thanks and sorrow, could never be told to his real parents due to his current situation really makes the heart hurt, "Take good care of your mom and me when we're old" D: oh god, oh god no that really hurt please stop, "Take care" words cannot express the amount of sadness this one scene in particular manage to make me feel ;-;

Surprise Echidna? Definitely a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Looking forward to see what happens next, Subaru managed to confront his past (mainly his parents) pretty well so i wonder what will come next.

The trial. Its almost owned me a sorrow feeling. The slow pace made me gone wild and wanted to end this misery as fast as possible. However, the end can be expected from my previous predicament. Its glad knewing him past the test. His past suited well, it feels good, and nothing can be done to change what happened. At least Subaru's got his lesson, and gave him more motivation to succeeded and conquered the world. Thank you very much, Echidna!

Actually his status in the real world, for me, is not necessary at all to talk about. Because, its his new life in that world.

This is a truth or just your opinion?

Take a look at Episode 1 from Season 1. There hasn't been any clear indication that Subaru died after he exited the convenience store (I haven't been able to spot it in the WN or Manga either).

And based on Subaru's reactions when Elsa gutted him in Old Man Rom's pawn shop, it would be safe to say that was where he first described his 'experience' of death.

My apologies, I tried to but I could not understand you properly here.

Are you saying that you think Subaru has 'died' in the real world? Yes or No.

From whatever is shown in the anime and LN, Subaru's fate is unknown in the real world since the question hasn't been addressed. I can think of a few possibilities:-

    [1] He could be dreaming.
[2] He simply vanished from Earth and ended up in Lugunica. He is a missing person in Japan. People not found for more than 7 years are considered dead. It is a Japanese law, as far as I know.
[3] He died of heart attack or stroke.

Reason [1] is very absurd, but definitely possible.

Reason [2] is most sensible and I believe that is the consensus shared among everyone here.

Reason [3] is extremely unlikely since there has not been a single scene about him experiencing that death in Season 1. Like, no thoughts about death after he entered Lugunica. His first thoughts were : "Wow, is this an ISEKAI FANTASY!?"

Oh my God. Perhaps the best single episode of an isekai I've ever seen. The pacing, the visuals, the perfect amount of symbolic repetition. This was somehow the funniest and most emotional episode of Re:Zero to date.

Wow... that was probably my favourite episode of the series. We get a glimpse of Subaru's painful backstory, and why he acts the way he does.

Really felt a deep emotional connection with his past as I've had many of the same thoughts. The whole impostor syndrome thing, spiralling into depression, feeling like you have no purpose... I was so immersed in the storytelling that those 30 minutes passed by like a few seconds!

I'm guessing part of the reason why Subaru got transported to the world was probably something to do with how he committed the sin of Sloth by becoming a shut-in (LN readers tell me how wrong I am). If we take this perspective, it makes sense why Betelgeuse was so attracted to him and kept repeating things like 'You are truly... slothful'. And why those phrases struck a chord with Subaru.

I guess why I loved this episode so much was because I've personally experienced what Subaru has experienced... I excelled at everything with little effort until high school, where everything just went spiralling down. I began to skip class to go to the counsellor, withdrew my bubbly nature from my friends, just hated myself so much. I do have loving parents (and I'm extremely grateful for that), so I felt like I was disappointing them with my very existence, much like Subaru. You kinda think, why do they love me so much when I'm so useless? Why won't they just disown me and throw me out?

What particularly struck me was when Subaru noticed her mother's 'Take care'. That's when I really broke down into tears. When you finally get a break from wallowing in your sea of self-pity and worthlessness, you finally take notice of the smaller details - that maybe, just maybe, some people do care about you. And for anyone who has went through this, it really does makes you face how selfish and ignorant you've been.

Man, Subaru just can't get a break... Such is the nature of Re:ZERO, I suppose [insert obvious Betty reference].

While there have been no indication from the series itself, the author has mentioned in a Q&A that Subaru's parents had a very hard time dealing with Subaru's sudden disappearance.

I couldn't find any source, but since Subaru's death in Japan was never written or shown, it's almost imperative that Subaru simply disappearing is what happen.

Concerning your previous point that subaru's state in Japan is unimportant, we don't know for sure yet.
Tappei is ridiculously good at making events of Re:Zero almost impossible to predict.
Maybe Subaru will get to return to Japan at some point, and if it's the case, it might be confusing for those who think he's dead.

Was that any important matter returning him back to Japan? Was that any hint in the upcoming event of resource material that Subaru's want to come back to the real world again? Was that any foreshadowing that the Re:Zero had the ability to reverse teleport people back to its original positions of the real world? I think its really unnecessary to bring him back. So, i may conclude him as a dead person in the real life.

Now that I saw Subaru's background I can reflect or connect with him more and understand why he makes those choices in the past. That really changed my perspective on him. Oh dear this has been the most beautiful scene this year, I guess Re:Zero will be the best anime of the YEAR again.

In a side note, I feel my pris ma liberté with all those rules.
I like to post in manga forum when I feel it is worth it, so people will think. "Shit, is her again" or something.

People asked me where I read certain thing but the rules say no telling where did you read so maybe I am too boring for not saying? Or salty because you didn't check my profile that says don't ask because I hate people to ghost me after that. I love learning languages so maybe I did not read the manga in English.

The writing for the character's dialogues and interactions with each other are handled with such care. From things like Rem's speech to the touching moments Subaru has with the people he loves and the friendly banter. It never feels generic and I really feel like Re:zero does this the best from what I've seen.

Nice family bonding episode.

Subaru's father is so charming and upbeat. Him kicking Subaru as a headbutt technique is hilarious.

It's nice to see Subaru's character development grow here. He gets to confront his past
.
When Subaru came to the recollection that he wasn't as special as his dad. And can't do many amazing things as him, it became very real.He then lived his life as a shut in. Subaru wanting his dad to say "I don't love you" and to make him give up is heartbreaking. But Subaru recalled that giving up doesn't suit him and remembers Rem. Rem loved Subaru for being himself. Hearing her say "Let's start here, from square one. No..from zero!" brings back some good memories. That quote made Rem best girl for me. And I love it.

Oh?? Echidna shows up in Subaru's school??

Thus, the trial has begun...

This ep is simply heartwarming! Not often do the audience even get to know the Isekai MC's backstory such as his family members and their current state in the word they originated from. But even fewer even attempted to introduce the MC's family members as characters with such lovable personalities! Oh, I love how energetic Subaru's father is and how Lovely his mother is! This is literally family goals, deadass!

Despite the NEET that is Subaru and how he's lost his confidence overtime after feeling that he can't be someone as exceptional as his father is, his father and mother is always there, caring for him and not pushing him away contrary to how Subaru tried for them to do. What is that but an exemplary example of how parents are supposed to be for their child? Parents who do nothing short of this, despite how far their child fall deserve nothing but utmost respect!

Finally, Subaru came into terms with his problem and decided to change once and for all. After all, now, there are those who look up at him with great reverence and love him for who he is and not how he should be. His identity crisis, is nothing against the mutual feelings he shares with those he loves and have sacrificed for, he's no longer living a completely selfish life, after all, he's gone to the depths of hell and back, suffering endlessly so that he could get to where he is today.

That scene showing Subaru's mother saying farewell before Subaru had midnight run to the convenience store shortly before he got transported into this world... That hits hard man (T^T)

Well, ab being said, I know it's not a backstory aside from that last scene with his mother by the door, but it's heartwarming nevertheless

That ED!!! eels like something that calms the heart...

I loved how they showed us the previous life of subaru which really develops the plot very well. It was a prologue but it was more like a filler episode. They showed us how subaru was before jumping into another world, his parents and his situation before. I mean they dont rush anything instead show many things one by us so it becomes clear for the audience to quickly adapt to the story. Thats the main reason I love this anime. No rushing at all! The plot is so smooth and nicely developed.

Amazing how much this explains Subaru's psyche and behaviors back in s1. He really takes after his erratic dad, except eyes like his mom's.
So he's not the usual neet who hates everyone & the world. Instead we walk thru his childhood, father's shadow & social pressure. He chooses the world, tho only like mayonnaise to fit with his parents lol (Quartet flashbacks), recognizes his parents are caring & hates himself being stuck in a ditch, for being the best at everything, & connecting back to Rem's rezero episode.
For upping his game he could've joined a biker gang but ok.
That airhead mom's so funny.
Likely unrelated, but specific detail where mc waits till 8am to justify it too late for school, as excuse for staying home, can't help but think this time theme might resurface. As ep1 he was always too late to save Rem. Almost sounds like unconsciously he may be able to influence the save point.

Interesting. We finally learned more about Subaru's past and why he acted like he acted in the previous season, both when it comes to his attitude in general or specific cringey poses he made sometimes.

While it was a very important episode that had its own unique atmosphere, it was simply too long. It made it go from something intriguing into something boring enough for me to stop watching it for a while.

Agreed. If it had been shorter, then its quality could've been higher due to better pacing and less static as hell scenes that felt as if their only purpose was to make this episode's duration longer.

This is how I feel, I’m waiting to see what’s so great about this second season. Agree with the comments saying it didn’t need to be half an hour as well, I really liked the first half but I got very bored by the second half. Felt unnecessary and dragged out

Also I see a lot of praise towards rezero for actually delving into Subaru’s past, which isekai apparently don’t tend to do... well it is very common in most stories and I would be very bothered if we never got to learn about his backstory! In fact I will be even more bothered if this is all we get, I assumed there would be more in the future? What a strange trend to just ignore the MC’s past, I find that so bizarre

The good things.... I LOVED seeing subaru’s Dad, it explained soooo much about him lmfao, his theatrical voice, the cringy poses, even his hair. The question is, why is Subaru’s dad like that??? Also might I mention Subaru’s dad is a major DILF like he had no business being that buff lmao

Something that confused me... did Subaru actually get those headaches? Or was that because he was in this dream/fantasy state? Kinda reminded me of those pains he got from the witch’s curse

I mean his insecurities are nearly all born out of the fact that he feels of less worth when he is compared to his father. That serves as the catalyst for a massive amount of Subaru's character, and I feel like introducing it, and having a 5 minute dialogue about it is not nearly enough. Up to this point, basically all of Subaru's actions are the product of his past mindset, in which he wanted to be different from his father, and be a person that it sought out and desired by other people. However, we never really saw why being compared to his father bothered him so damn much. I know that you could just fill in the blanks and infer, but I still think that it is much more powerful and interesting if we saw it first hand.

All that we ever see about people comparing him to his father, and how his insecurities arise because of it is a still screen of Subaru wearing a medal with his dad next to him, followed by another still of white people without visible eyes saying "You're definitely his kid". There are a few other scenes that work with the mentioned stills (like Subaru talking about how he was no longer good at the things he used to be good at in reference to school and sports), but it still feels like it is not enough. It seems nitpicky, but I personally feel that it would have gave more gravity to his development if we were able to see the situations that he was in that made him feel that way. Now the best way to do this, as I said before, would be to show more flashbacks of Subaru's earlier life. That way, his later development would have a little more weight to it.

Fair enough, you articulated your point well. It did feel a little weird that they added the father aspect to his character 28 episodes into the show, when they haven't even mentioned his parents prior to this episode as far as I'm aware.

that's because Re:Zero tells it's story similar to Attck on Titan in that scenes that may have been inconspicuous when they were first shown, gains a whole new meaning after new context is added to the characters and new info is revealed

Subaru's backstory just tells how much a hypocrite he has been. It just doesn't fit his character to act so obnoxious especially when since the beginning, there are people that care and understand him. Most of his issues are just about his insecurities being overblown, no wonder he passed the test to easily.

There are 3 posters at Subaru's room, one of them is from Absolute Duo (which the image from the poster is the cover from the manga), the other two I don't know which one they are, does someone know why are those animes there even tho there is no relation between them (like author, director etc).
