Foolish in hindsight indeed, I mean she could've saved her daughter's email in other places for one, and used the crew's communications station for email and such later on. But then if not for that Yorimoi wouldn't happen in the first place so I'm not complaining lmao.

Again, the reason Takako went back for the laptop was not for her daughter's emails. Look at her Inbox before Shirase's flood of emails came down - it was all work related.

Her laptop contains all her research and work, which is priceless (and the whole reason they're in Antartica), compared to the emails, which as you said, can be done from any other machine at the base station (like Hinata's email from her "friends").

I'm p.sure they don't do research individually on personal computers without backing up everything on cloud servers when they are in such environment.

If they were at base camp, sure. But you have to remember they were on an expedition to a new camp spot ("to be named Kobuchizawa Research Centre", as Gin said). There's no way they could have the infrastructure in place to be linked back to their servers at base camp, let alone the cloud.

All her data and work she did for this expedition (like during the flashback to her typing on her laptop in the truck) would be stored on her laptop until they could get back to camp and backed up.

Wow, all those unread emails... she spent three years sending emails to her mother, even though she knew she was dead, only to be reminded that those were basically never delivered.

Amazing episode. And they even kept on delivering adventure portions during this ep.

That was crazy. They just keep rapid firing you with cry moments starting at "Kobuchizawa Observatory" and it doesn't stop til the episode is over. It was like they were playing a game where they have to make you cry as much as possible in 10 minutes or less. Sadistic geniuses

What a heartbreaking episode... It's impossible not to cry when Shirase finally realizes and is able to admit to herself that her mom is truly dead. All the emails she sent to her mom, all the emails her mom will never, ever read because she's dead. Oh my god, my heart. And all the girls crying outside the room as she screamed and cried. Fuck

This, this is peak anime sadness, the calm music, the dusk ambiance, the sorrow transmited by Kana's performance, the heartbreaking realisation that her mom will never come back.

Not so much time have I cried from watching anime such as this one, but it confirms it's merit as one of the best CGDCT slice of life/adventure and perhaps the best anime of 2018.

Madhouse went full on this show, even while being normie as hell, it still has the pure anime aura and vibes you can only get from this media and form of art.

Thank you for such a both enjoyable and tearful story of a bunch of random highschool girls accomplishing something in their life through friendship and help.

Just now watching and finishing up this series and my tears can't be stopped, this is simply a beautiful story. In the truest and most literal sense of the word, it's definitely up there with Koe no Katachi for me. Lost my dad 8 years ago and I relate to that pain so much, especially holding it in for so long. I thought Anohana and Maquia had prepared me for everything, I was wrong. I hate how slept on this is, absolute masterpiece.

Yes. Her laptop has received exactly 1101 emails from Shirase.

I don't think the emails actually stopped at 1101 unread emails though, they simply cut the scene at that moment for the obvious reason the above posters pointed out.

The password in Japanese would read "Nunuwanu" (ぬぬわぬ)by the way, and the incorrect one would be "Waunuya"(わうぬや). Don't know what those mean, google didn't turn up any meanings for either of them, so maybe it just typed in the numbers and not the hiragana, then the correct number is 1101 and the incorrect one is 0417.

1101 - November 1. Shirase's birthday
how come nunuwanu translates to 1101?

Check the keyboard as she is typing. It's not a translation. The 1 key is also used for the character ぬ (nu), and 0 key for わ (wa).

That was unexpectedly dark... Poor Shirase, I can't imagine how it must feel like to be in her position, and just see all those unread messages appear... (It reminded me of an episode of Princess Sara.)
And Kana Hanazawa did such a great job, as always. She always makes me feel for the characters she plays.
I also like the whole thing about Shirase feeling she doesn't have a lifegoal anymore now that she's here, and doesn't even manage to feel the emotions she wants to feel. But I feel so bad for her...
However this episode raised an important question : if the members of the expedition already know way too well how dangerous this trip is, why are they even allowing inexperienced teens to come ? I know I won't get an answer since the show isn't about that but come on, those adults are completely irresponsible.

Because Yuzu's agency sponsored the antartica project. Also remember episode 4 when they trained the gangs. they aren't that stupid

Oh yeah I forgot about Yuzu's agency. I still don't believe them allowing the three others to come was that much of a good idea though (well, maybe Shirase could've been allowed to come anyway considering her background, but for Mari and Hinata, I don't get it).
And yes, I know they trained them, but they stated multiple times how risky this mission is even when properly trained, and the show has been using Takako's fate as a way to prove it, to prove how dangerous it is, even for experienced adults. If people like Takako can die during the expedition, how can they be sure that people like Mari will be able to handle it ? And the thing is that it has been shown multiple times : they aren't sure. They aren't sure the girls will be fine by the end of the trip. So I agree that they're not "that" stupid, but that doesn't mean they are that responsible either.

I can't remember the last time I cried this hard from an anime... it's been a while. Amazing, beautiful, heartbreaking.

At first I didn't get why Shirase was having doubts, but after watching her conversation with Gin I finally understand, and it's something that I understand well too. For the last three years Shirase's had a single goal in mind: to go to the place where her mother was. But after that, then what? Will she feel empty for the rest of her life?

When she put down all those 10,000 yen bills while saying what job she did to get that really made me go wow. She worked so hard for this, so extremely hard for this. It's hard to keep up motivation for that long, and especially hard when you're alone and tired and overworked.

Yuzu getting all excited being called good friends was really cute and adorable!

The montage during the journey was great after Kimari thanked Shirase for bringing her along and gave her the chance to live out her youth to the fullest. Shirase who had been fine alone now had the best of friends, friends who would even go to Antarctica with you.

Gin may be silent, but what happened to Shirase's mom really haunts her to this day. Seeing someone so strong and silent like her have a tear flowing down her cheek was really something.

"Kobuchizawa Station"

A heartwarming moment.

I was already tearing up throughout the whole episode but it just extremely intensified when those three started running around determined to find something, just one piece that showed that Shirase's mom was here, and that Shirase herself came here. Tears started flowing that moment. How determined her friends were to find that something, even when Shirase herself had already accepted it.

And then they found that laptop. I guess this was the something that Takako forgot at the station and she went back to get it.

I don't know what I was expecting. I was surprised that she couldn't log in at first. What numbers did she input? Her birthday?

I really didn't think this was gonna happen. The moment she opened her mom's mail and her messages, all titled "Dear Okaa-san", started coming in... She started crying, shouting out "Mom!", and all her friends crying outside... I couldn't stop crying it. I was sniveling and struggling to hold it in as I saw that scene. All the emotions and pent-up feels from watching the episode and the entire series in whole just exploded.

I'm just thinking and feeling so much that I don't even know what to say.

I came in watching because of a lot of things. I had heard that it was good. I saw Gigguk's video of it. Some people compared it to Violet Evergarden, a series that I equally love and cherish and means something to me. I came in skeptical, because some people said this 'beat' Violet Evergarden. But the moment those emails came in I knew that, just like Violet Evergarden, this series was a masterpiece. I understood at that moment how beautiful and amazing this series was. I love and cherish both just as much.

Truly a masterpiece. 10/10, not just for this episode, but definitely for the entire series. An amazing job, Madhouse. This is going straight in my top favourites.

Absolutely beautiful episode, it had everything from the usual wholesome moments and the drama. Yuzu's reaction when they where called good friends was *chef's kiss* beautiful, you four are indeed good friend's T_T.

So, the thing that Takako forgot was most likely the laptop and that makes it all the more sadder. When all those unread emails popped up I bawled inside.

10/10 anime hands down one of my favorites now, I love the characters, their friendship and their journey to reach this place further than the universe.

Great episode again, but the placing of this episode felt weird in comparison to the previous. Shirase was slightly upbeat and peppy in the last ep standing up for Hinata but then suddenly becomes closed off and secluded in this, i get the reasoning, but the transition could've been done a bit smoother.

What I'm blown out the most is Shirase's friends considerate towards her. Just when Shirase said she's already happy she came her mother's place, her friends were finding out some evidence that her mother was there, and they found the laptop. The friends we make in our journey are best friends. Because we're on the destination. Even Yuzuki-chan happy she has friends.
