is an average series, with many tropes being overused in a lazy way. i thought somehow they're gonna close it in a decent note, redeeming it with making the ending atleast breaking the cliches. But they didn't confess huh...

i didn't see any reason to expanding this into another season

An adequate finale.

Still a pretty average show to be fair, nothing really happend, just a bunch of cute moments to smile about, cute people doing cute things and so on ... and shogi. Funny cheerful characters, comedy, pacing was good with this as well, at first i thought that the 20+ minutes wont be a good choice but hey, actually it was.

Now, from all the forehead manga this author is making (all at the same time btw, lol) this is the best one for me, by a mile definitely. Wouldn't mind a second season. Also, see ? You can make a shogi anime without people having a mental breakdown every five minutes.

you can't really called this a shogi anime, the shogi sequences is just a gimmick.

The same like Kageki shoujo and Re-main many seasons ago. The theater school and the Water Polo is just a gimmick for them to make a Slice-of-life anime

About what you would expect from the finale of these kind of light rom-coms. I'd say the status quo is still persistent + there's the awareness factor now.

Very enjoyable little show that worked better for me than the beginning of Takagi. I dunno, had to be the passive approach with more focus on romance here.

7/10

Second anime I watch this season that trolls the audience with a supposed big event not happening in the end. Now who's gonna tell Rin it was a fake win and that she will have to suffer a bit more until the main couple becomes official?

Pretty average show overall. Sweet for moments but incredibly repetitive and boring for most of its runtime. Urushi is cute, adorable and all that but her taking so long to realize the obvious was underwhelming to see and I still think that presenting Rin as part of a supposed love triangle was particularly unnecessary.
Maki and Sakurako were pretty nice characters tho. I will sure miss them.

5/10 - Still way better than Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san, by the way. Here the main heroine is actually cute and the guy isn't dumb beyond salvation so I really appreciate that.

I was pretty confused why he didn't confess.

Sigmar-Unberogen said:
Some people don't realize that shows like this don't end with confessions in 1 season.

I'm aware this is a reason why a confession might not have happened. It's kind of what the story is leading up to, and if it happens in season one, then there can't be a season two, and thus there wouldn't be a profit for the creators. If the story continues in the manga, and the showrunner's are trying to compensate for a potential season two, then that's fine...

But STILL... what I'm wondering, is why did they hype up the confession saying that Ayumu would confess if he beat her in shogi -- and then HAVE her beat her in shogi in the final episode -- and then have him NOT confess. If they didn't want Ayumu to confess, then they should've just made him lose... right?

At least, that was my impression at first... and, maybe I missed it, but it actually looks like he actually won against Urushi while she had a self-imposed handicap? Meaning, it wasn't a true win? Is that what happened? Or did the subtitled version I watch leave that part out of the dialogue???

...but then again, why did Ayumu's friend (the girl with the eyebrows, who likes to eat) act so happy for Ayumu and satisfied? She even thought to herself, "I hope it goes well when you confess, Ayumu!"

Like, they actually led up to it and then implied it was going to happen. And then it just-- didn't. It just abruptly ended and the two walked out without a confession having taken place. I'm not angry or disappointed, but I'm very confused, and I'm wondering what exactly I'm missing.

Although, I'll still say this is an incredibly average story, for sure.
Ayumu, Urushi... and Takeru... are the only three somewhat appealing characters. Ayumi and Urushi can be pretty bland and one dimensional at times.
I appreciate the shogi element to distinguish this show from others, and I like how instead of succumbing to regular slice-of-life antics, a lot of the show takes place in the shogi room and actually utilizes the said shogi element.
I'm not a pro critic so I have no authority to declare my opinion more warranted than others... I can't even explain why Takagi is a way better (imo), more dynamic show. Except that this one was just boring. 🤷‍♂️ 5 or 6 out of 10 from me

Great episode! Urushi gets a call from Ayumu and she is very happy to hear his voice again xD.
'The moon is beautiful, isn't it?'
Ayumu makes Urushi blush again lol.
He tells her he didn't text her because he didn't want to interrupt her trip.
After Rin's training, Ayumu is now ready to face Urushi.
Rin is a bit doubtful as it seems that the same strategy of beating someone to ask them out didn't work for one of her friends.
Meanwhile, it seems Urushi has lost Ayumu's good luck charm!
But it seems a cat has it and ran away with it!
Luckily, she gets it in the end.
Urushi has figured out she likes Ayumu!
She arrives back and goes to the shogi club to give everyone their gifts.
Then her and Ayumu have a match...
And Ayumu wins! (But with a four piece handicap) xD.

I loved this show a lot and I hope this will boost manga sales and sell blu rays and we get a season 2!

I'm definitely rooting for another season because I want to see this turn into a real relationship.. I also want to see if the other two actually kissed!

I'm honestly so irritated that Ayumu didn't confess. That was so anti-climactic and disappointing. I hope we get a second season though so we can finally reach his confession!(I hope)

I'm also upset with the anti-climax that was the writer failing to deliver on the promised confession. It's true that romcoms like this don't need (and typically don't have) a confession in Season 1, but it's 100% logical to expect one when the writer makes it so clear that there will be one. Ayumu won the Shogi game so a confession is mandatory (anything else is anti-climatic and bad writing). The writer shouldn't have written himself into a corner if he was unwilling to deliver on the confession after winning that is the very premise of the show.
And no, the four-piece handicap thing is a retcon of Ayumu's self-imposed rules at best and at worst it's the audience inventing things that didn't happen to cover for the writer's failures. (Did Ayumu ever say he would only confess after a handicap-less game? No, and Ayumu's heavily handicapped game against Urushi's father proved he considered a win to be a win even with a handicap.)
All in all, it's very disappointing that such a great show shot itself in the foot in the last episode. It would've been so easy to just not hype up a final Shogi showdown that the writer had no intention of actually making satisfying. I liked this show a lot, but it's in spite of the writer self-sabotaging the last episode, not because the ending was good.

I guess this is more lovely to watch when I compared it to the "Takagi" series except this didn't get many songs like Rie did.
Their relationship is really adorable and realistic and ideal.

This is probably just the start of their story but I really am fond of them. Better read the source lmao

It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

Not a fan of how they directed the anime, they really tried to hard to make this more relaxed and focused on sappy stuff which kind of just sucked alot of the energy and personality from the series The manga is still a sappy romcom but it moved at a way faster pace and definitely was having more fun with the humor, like the soundtrack in particular felt very unfitting most of the show

i really hate it when authors add a third wheel in these romcom anime or manga
they always end up pointless and won't go anywhere and just make the viewers feel bad for that one character
author did Rin dirty i really feel bad for her but other than that this was pretty wholesome show

We got the classic 'tsuki' wordplay

Playing shogi while on the phone seems hella confusing tbh.

The matching keychain was wholesome

Maki is the best wing(wo)man after all. Urushi FINALLY realises that she too has feelings for Ayumu.

Kinda bummed out that he didn't confess to her. I guess he's hellbent on defeating her with no handicaps.

We need someone for Rin-chan in the next season fr

Was starting to get a little tired of the missing Ayumu schtick, it was starting to get a little old. But at least Senpai was able to realize her feelings. I figured this wouldn't end in any kind of confession. With where they are at in the school year, they still have another 10 or so months in school together.

I've got to hand it to Rin, she was a true wingman. She put her feelings to the side to help Ayumu, and despite being a brat at times, she earned my respect. I hope she gets a win one day too.

Overall, this was a safe, middle of the road romcom. Nothing special, but nothing awful either. There was charm to it, and I can appreciate Ayumu being straight forward about his feelings without explicitly saying them. Not many male protagonists in these kinds of shows are like that. I found Senpai pretty plain at first, but she grew on me as time went on. I enjoy the author's work, and I wouldn't mind a second season of this. The sequel would just need to take a step forward in more exciting and interesting stories and development. But I enjoyed this for what it was.

Way to lead us on, not telling us that last game didn't count until after he had won. And way to lead us on with no confession for the season as a whole. At best it lurks in a later season that may never come.

Although Ayumu said the moon is beautiful unaware of its implications, Urushi was hesitant as it would mean a stealth confession to him.
Maki's hard work paid off.
Despite Rin's unrequited love for Tanaka senpai, she encourages him to make his move because she regrets not doing so herself.

Seriously? That's how they are going to end it the romance series? facepalm

Well at least she admited her feelings to herself.

It was awesome that we got a kiss from our second couple.. They are perfect together as well.

I really like her best friend (Maki).. She's cute, seems really nice and is fun as well. Has a nice bod too.

I can't be the only one who's felt really bad for Rin.. not just this ep either. Poor girl. :'(
She's cute and a keeper too, some lucky guy is going to win big.

-------

Overall I really enjoyed the series. Cute likeable MFC, the mains make a really good/cute couple too. A fun and relaxing series with little bullshit, drama or other crap.

9/10 Might have gotten better but that ending was a letdown.

Sure, it stinks that there was never a proper confession from the female MC after her realization, but it shouldnt ruin the anime journey.
