What can I say? It's just giant recap of the anime. Good to watch it you haven't seen NGE for a long time, but don't waste your time watching it if you just marathoned the series like what I did...

My advice as an Eva fan, if you have the time just watch the TV series. It's the way Eva should be experienced imo.

Best recap ever. Highly climatic and strongly emotionally charged with excelent use of pupular classical pieces. When i watched it for the first time 4 years ago the day after i finished the series, Death truly moved me. I found myself just staring at the screen during end credits, reminiscing whole lotta stuff.

I personally found the recap worthwhile despite the fact I marathoned theseries just a few days before watching this. Captured a lot of the emotions of the series nicely. Do not watch without having first seen the series.
As for rebirth, good teaser for end of evangelion which I will be watching tomorrow.

J/k. It was a nice recap that sums up the entire series is a more thought-provoking manner (and definitely more entertaining, considering that it largely removed the uncreative Ultraman/Super Sentai's 'defeat a monster each week' aspect as seen in the first 12-14 episodes of NGE).

It's just too bad no one's subbed Rebirth, ruining my experience. Sure. it's just a shorthanded version of The End of Evangelion, but I feel that any movie experience should not be 'deducted' away as such. That was the longest intermission I ever had in my life.

So I didn't enjoy Death. It wasn't like the series, I didn't like the order of how they stitched everything together. And the speed of the cuts. The string quartet stuff was good though.

The intermission was excellent.

Rebirth was surprising. Finally explaining a lot of the Evangelion secrets. Eva-Unit-02 was awesome. Looking forward to seeing End of Evangelion now. You can tell they stepped up the animation quality for this.

Btw, the PAL DVD is dreadful. Its not anamorphic widescreen, so you have to zoom in and the picture quality is bad. Took a long time for me to get both Japanese speech and English subtitles working as well. The menu is nice, with the music and the images.

Movie thoughts:

This movie is good for remembering what happened in NGE plot. It's like quick flash version what happened. But it's not good to watch this if you're not seen the Gainax original 26-episode Tv-series. Because you will be like WTF!?

Sure they give some stuff clear picture. But this pace is too quick and you don't catch so much info like in Tv-series still it's best recap I've ever seen and decent movie. Music is just fantastic and hearing all violin songs played just make you remember NGE and characters.

I say watch this movie after have you seen original tv-series and give decent break after original series and then watch it and you may catch some new stuff.

Argh, watched this right after I marathoned the whole series. Not a very good idea - I did enjoy some parts that was recapped, but other parts was pretty average I guess. I think it captured the important aspects of the anime though, so I think it is pretty good for a recap.

So how long are the individual parts? As in how long is death and how long is rebirth/eoe part 1 in this movie?
Just I have seen end of evangelion so obviously I have already seen everything in the rebirth part so I just want to watch death.
Thanks a lot.

it was great as the movie ! I don't see the reason for such bad score and complaints O.o

this is not series, and movie must have some base so it's really good recap with additional details. I loved the movie and how it was scouted as scenes from previous events while they are playing string quartet.
Much more thinghs cleared now, and more understandable, also I like the dialogue and psyhological assigment played big role between the scenes and the text.

and just to remind, this is not for watching if you haven't seen whole series of 26 episodes ! so go watch series then movies :)

It was refreshing to watch this after I finished NGE 4/5 months ago, at that time I didn't knew if I watched an epic anime or a huge crap, but now I believe it was epic.
Now I realized that Shinji masterbated when Asuna was in hospital.
I still don't understand NGE ,but this recap helped me somehow.

This gets a bad rap... I think the first few minutes put a lot of people off; it's structured fairly logically and covers most the important stuff.

Well Death itself has been changed since it was first released, (Death)^2 being the one most common. They took some scenes from Death and put them in the NGE Director's Cuts.

I liked this movie, even if it's just a recap. They chose the most meaningful scenes and it helped to understand a lot better the series. Also, the fact that "death" was constructed around the part when the children where rehearsing classic music emphasizes the fact that neon genesis evangelion is a classic of the anime genre.
The only thing that was a bit annoying was the credits that lasted too long, and after that there were some more minutes waiting for the beginning of "rebirth". Though perhaps they did it on purpose to make the audience reflect on what they had just watched.

Recap~! In the form of a movie. owo
Lots of memorable scenes from the original anime. :3

Well.....memorable as in psychologically memorable. O-O

It was good: Nice recap from the original series, great summary to remember what happened in the anime, and more!

Can't wait to see the Alternate Settings though. :3

Having just finished the NGE television series a few days ago, I really didn't need to watch Death and Rebirth...........but I'm glad I did.

To me, Death and Rebirth is less of a play-by-play summary and more of a thematic and emotional summary of the original NGE plotlines. It can be extremely confusing for someone who hasn't seen the tv episodes, but the movie does what was intended. It has an artful recap followed with new animation.

I feel like it serves its purpose and that it serves it well. For fans of the series, it is a good refresher if they've had a gap in their NGE watching. Personally, it drove home a little more clearly some of the themes of the story and I felt very emotional while Pachelbel's canon played at the end. The classical music juxtaposition with Anno's storytelling is near brutal...in a good way.

I said I watched this but I lied. I only watched Death since I already saw End of Eva so I don't see a reason to watch, unless Rebirth is cut differently from its respective portion in the actual movie. It was an interesting watch. I get the feeling it was made mainly to squeeze some extra money out of the fans that were so angry about the TV ending.

lol for some reason the movie was re-dubbed. Original wayyy better, most of these lines have no delivery.

(Kaworu's almost reaches Lilith)
Bored and tired Hyuuga: "They've reached it... heavens door is open... *yawn*"

(Another angel appears/disappears)

In case anyone's still struggling with the structure of Death(true)^2 [Rebirth is redundant with EoE] it basically breaks down to this:

- Overview/ Background (it calms down a bit after the first few minutes)
- Misato
- Third Child (Shinji)
- Second Child (Asuka)
- First Child (Rei)
- Yui
- Fourth Child (Touji)
- Kaji
- Fifth Child (Kaworu)

and Gendo, Ritsuko/Magi etc.'s around here and there too obvs

It's fairly logical but a rapid-fire plot overview and not a great place to start admittedly.

----
What I'm watching these days is apparently the BD vers but it's pretty disappointing - obviously it was blown up to widescreen from 4:3, and they left a lot of grain in in the remastering but it's pretty damned shaky, so you basically get a whole lot of noise in the picture as a result. Looks great at times but at others it's a bit of a mess.

Would LOVE for EoE on (physical) BD though :<

Well the recap was very well done, I enjoyed it very much, even if I watched the series recently.
Just reminds me how many great scenes the series had. :)

The Rebirth, however, was only ok, I did not care much for the scene where Shinji masturbated, that was very unnecessary imo.

The way this started, not sure I am going to enjoy EoE as much as the original series, I guess I will give it a go in a couple of weeks, and see how it goes, there are still some unanswered questions that need revealing.

I've been watching the main series about an episode a day pace or so since it popped up on Netflix. So I didn't marathon it, and as an old guy have a bad memory, so I liked the recap, lol.

I didn't care for the end of the series (last two episodes), so it was nice to get a recap reminder of the 90% of the show that I did enjoy.

Next up End of Evangelion. Hope this has more of the theme/pace of the first 24 episodes, and less of the 25/26.

damn mfs in here really hated this lol i enjoyed it. tho i haven't seen Eva in so many years so that might be the reason.

The Rebirth part was pointless af tho so i get why some people hated this, but i think they did a good job in the Death part with cramming all the good/important stuff that happened in the first 24 episodes into 1 hour. also the music was dope.

Actually one of the few times i'm thankful for a recap of a show, especially one as big and in-depth as NGE.

I binged ep 1-24 on Netflix with the one month i bought, but sadly life just started filling itself up and i didn't get to finish ep25-26 until 467 days later. You'd bet i also have the memory of a gold fish, so i barely remembered anything when i got around to finishing the series. Thankfully before i go into End of Eva with only a fraction of the series still in my head, i saw Death and Rebirth on MAL and watched it beforehand.

TL;DR Death and Rebirth is a recap of ep 1-24 and im thankful for it cus i barely remember anything about the show when i last watched it.

Actually, a pretty okayish recap if you haven't been up to NGE for a while.

There are 2 parts, the first part was pretty clear since it was basically a recap.

But the second part...did it have parts of ep 25 and 26?

What did Misao mean that humans are born out of Lilith? Wasn't Adam the first angel? What does she mean by humans being the 18th angel?

Also, SEELE really went hard on NERV headquarters. Slaughtering so many innocent workers...jeez.

Asuka's finally back into the fray. She can synchronize with her Eva again. When she tossed that ship over those mercenaries, it was so satisfying lol.

I don't think I'm gonna talk about the scene where Shinji was fapping while seeing Asuka's breasts.

The end though. SEELE sent the newly formed Eva series?? Damn, we are getting an all-out Eva vs Eva?!?

Useful for a quick rundown of the series before EoE. The framing narrative of the Children practicing for the school orchestra is nice. Overall this is maybe worth a watch but you can easily skip it.

You know the writer is pretentious when the first 2 minutes of the show consist of 3 different conversations going on at the same time, with 2 of them being pretty much unintelligible because they are in the background. This is done to create a pretense of profound importance. But in reality, none of the 2 background conversations convey anything of importance. Evangelion is full of similar pretentious moments, where it creates an illusion of being deep, but upon closer exploration it turns out to be a bunch of nothing. The writers know though that most people won't bother exploring deep and they know that a huge portion of the audience will simply sing ballads of praise because said audience felt like the show was filled with significance. Sadly, that's only a pretense of significance, and it falls apart upon any closer examination.
