No particular gender preferences.

The MC must be somehow interesting ...not necessary relatable.

For example Youjo Senki's MC is a crazy misanthropic bureaucrat stuck in a little girl's body.
Can't relate to any of those.
Still fun to watch them making a big mess in the alternative historical setting.

Females. I dont like anime males. Every time they are around they create so many problems. Running around screaming misbehaving and trying to hump MY cute little angels! That shit doesn't fly with me

My girls are nicer calmer. I often like their personality much better. But most importantly they are so damn cute. I think females are more aesthetically pleasing to look at

Anime males on the other hand are Imo unattractive beings and for me they destroy the aesthetic value of the anime . A minor support role if the keep in the background can work in rare occasions

But I prefer only cute girls because I often enjoys those the most . And I love Yuri and shows with females only are often full of lesbian sweetness. And noting are more beautiful then lesbian kissing,,YEEEEEEEEEEES! It rocks my world and I cant get enough of it. Yuri is life Yuri is pure and Yuri makes my heart tick

Then it also depends on what I want to watch. Sometimes Im in the mood for a battle shounen or something else and then I dont care to much. But its rare that I travel outside my kingdom of pretty anime girls =P

Depends on what I’m watching if I’m watching a heterosexual harem show, the protagonist has to be male for me to consider it, other than that, I don’t really care much.

I prefer watching anime with a lot of guys or at least 1 guy as MC at least especially hot guys since I love them.

It boils down to personality. I'd watch Usagi over Kirito, but I'd watch Conan over Usagi. And although I'd watch Conan over Usagi, but I'd watch Honoka over Conan (although I'd watch Honoka over anyone to be quite honest).

So yeah

I haven't thought about their gender, as long as a character is well build up, has got development and a good backstory, I don't care. As I look at what anime that I was fond of, I can kinda see a pattern with preferable genders depending on genre. Still it's not something I think about

I definitely prefer male leads.

Female lead anime is usually romantic in nature and I'm not a fan of the romance or very slice of life (also not a fan) and I tend to find female leads fit certain tropes that I dislike in a female specific character. (Overly cute, peppy and young, overtly sexual, very innocent to the point of being annoying. )

Of course there are a lot of exceptions for female lead like Moribito, Excel Saga, Air Master, Claymore but they are still minor in comparison to the plethora of popular shojo stuff.

I'm female

there are as many female leads as there are as males, is just shounen is the most popular genre, which is main target is men, so most shounen anime tend to have a male protagonists, but if you just TRY to check out other genres, you'll be suprised with the insanely HUGE amount of female leads there are.

I also don't really care...

But I'm just going to say female cause I enjoy a good series with a well made Female Character - there are too little Female MCs out there and there should be a lot more.

Especially in Genres like Action, Horror, Sci-fi, Isekai etc. I would LOVE to see more female MCs in Genres/Series where Romance isn't the Main Genre.

And if they are a Main Character (with a male main Focus) they're often reduced to certain stereotypes or just there for ecchi scenes/romance the MC/help him out. Rarely do they have their own story.

I'd say female leads, although, like male leads, i feel that they can just be reskins of the same character traits. Though when a female lead is done well, it can really connect with me even more than male characters sometimes.

Honestly, I would like to see more female characters because they are usually just objects or toys to guys in anime and no real meaning towards women in shows. If we got more shows were women aren't objects or "toys" it would be more acceptable and would be more inclusive like properties like kill la kill Bakemonogatari, and more. My favorite character is male but that doesn't mean I like women's main characters. I wanted to be more inclusive with black females, mixed females, and more. Sorry that this was all over the place I'm SUPER tired. Thanks for your time.

I mean, I easily connect more to a male lead. But I've noticed, from what I've watched and heard of especially, that female leads in anime tend to have more personality. The number of blank-state male MC's is numerous.

As the Op said the answer can vary from person to person
for me I would say I prefer male leads as me being a boy having an older brother , going to an all boys school ( something I am very grateful for ) and having male friends haven't really interacted with females a lot until previous year so I think I am not as accepting of female leads as I am of male leads
Also , I think for the female leads I have seen , they are hell annoying and make up in my most hated characters list for example Kagome from Inuayasha ( I hate the whole anime ) and Yoshiro from toilet bound Hanako kun just to name a few but recently I have seen that femlae leads can be enjoyable too for example Natsume from Deca Dence and all main charcters from Keep your hands off Ezouiken but undeniably they are present in lower amount than male leads

I would like to say it depends, cause in the end I can like a badass female MC, but generally I do prefer male MCs, hell, 100% male casts even - for the simple reason, I am a straight woman who likes to look at pretty boys <<
females like in Black Lagoon or Bleach, who are strong fighters I can grow to like - but the stereotypical big eyed shoujo / romance tagged anime MC is a big nope for me, same for moe characters in CGDCT shows, I avoid both, does nothing for me

i prefer male leads most of the time since most animes make the female leads all whiny and bratty about everything. some female leads like emma from the promised neverland & ryuuko from kill la kill are probably some of my favorite female leads. they dont have that over exaggerated and stereotypical anime girl personality.

For me, it doesn't matter. As long as the story and characters are good, I'm more than happy. I watched all kinds of anime and there're very good female lead anime out there.

Probably the main reasons for the dominance of male lead anime is the fact that most authors are male and is far easier to write stories and characters you can relate to and you know their way of thinking. For the most part, one of the biggest difference between male and female is psychologically, so it makes it hard for a male writer to create believable female characters not knowing how they're suppose to think in the context of his story.

Male, oviously since i myself am a male. That being said, one of my favorite shows, Maoyuu Maou Yuusha , kind of has the protagonist as a female. But it might also just be that most anime have male protags anyway and i dont have enough samples to compare. Out of the 140 somehting anime i watched, maybe 7- 8 had female protags.

I prefer both; since the only thing I care about when it comes to a protagonist is that they're a likable/interesting characters with a good enough backstory.

A considerable portion of my favorites either have a female protagonist or have somewhat balanced leads. It helps I don't watch battle shounen, any seasonal isekai or pretty much any highschool romcom/ecchi/harem aimed at adolescents. So I can't relate at all with the "most are male / female protagonists are very rare".

"Watch better anime" can be applied here.

Well, I like female leads a little more than male ones, because they are rare, but I really don't care much about the gender. The character is way more than just gender, so if they're a well written lead i will enjoy watching them regardless of gender.

Yeah, that IS the contradiction. If u enjoy both why would u want to see more female leads?

If the reason is that u enjoy female leads more , then there is the LIE.
If the reason is that u want more diverse leads, then what u actually want is diversity in personality.
Or did u say that under the justification that there simply are few female leads? Well if that is the reason, then that is contradictory again , since if u are ok with both then u see them as equal right? Well if u see the role of protagonist as equal no matter the sex of the character, then there should be no problem even if all of anime had only Male protags.

If u want something different, its not the sex of the character that needs to change, but the writing quality.

I am guessing that u just said that because people around u said it to and because of that u think that its something that should happen under the justification that many people belive it. Look at LOTR. Mostly male characters and its a Masterpiece.

"I am guessing that u just said that because people around u said it to and because of that u think that its something that should happen under the justification that many people belive it"

Stop making random assumptions about me.

" Look at LOTR. Mostly male characters and its a Masterpiece."

What do you want to tell me with that answer? There are many shows with mostly male characters that are masterpieces but did I say something about that? No. I said I would like to see more female leads that doesn't mean that I think that shows with only men are trash. One of my favourite anime is LotGH nearly the whole cast is male, so yeah

"If u want something different, its not the sex of the character that needs to change, but the writing quality."

I dont even know how you can make so many random assumptions based on one simple sentence

But I don't want to make big discussion here so yeah

Personally, I really lean towards a male lead. I'm not sure why I have that bias since I've seen great female mc's, but the gender of the mc plays a huge part in my enjoyment of a show.
But this only applies for the main, main character. I'm totally okay with a female deuteragonist etc.

Depens what kind of anime it is. If it is action oriented, then male leads are usually better (though there are also some good female leads like Revy), if it is a romance anime then I prefer female leads since their emotions are usually better depicted

Well in the early years I used to dislike watching shows with female leads. Anime for me is a way of escape like for many of us and so I could not indulge myself in anime with female leads. But now I don't know. I have matured and so have my tastes. Now after 300+ anime I feel bored when I see a show with the run of the mill cookie cutter highschool male protagonist. The lack of character depth and complexity in some shows hurt my eyes. Now I prioritise story and character development over gender. And especially after watching Seirei no Moribito I do think that female leads can also be kick-ass characters.

I'm generally more appealed by female leads, first because I'm a girl and probably unconsciously relate to the character on that level (yes I know, that's dumb), but also because from what I've seen, female leads generally are more diversified and memorable than male ones. They can be tsundere, kuudere, deredere or simply not any dere type, while the male lead is most of the time whether an hyperactive character, a cynical one or one who doesn't have any personality.
So I don't purposely chose anime with female leads over male ones, but I noticed I've been unconsciously doing it (though I still watch a lot of shows with male leads).
But of course I'm generalizing, there are still a lot of exceptions, fortunately.

Actually, ideally I would prefer there to be both co-equal male and female leads, and would prefer if they were the only two main characters or alongside 1 - 3 more since I prefer smaller, more intimate, and tighter knit casts of characters, but there seem to be surprisingly less that I've seen than I would have initially thought where both a male and female main character are featured and given equal screentime/importance.

This is why a series like Inuyasha is absolutely optimal for me in that regard.
