They put in a lot of things like her mother's death and the hat that were not revealed until later in the manga

actually, is exactly like the manga...

there's the same scene with the boy giving the hat to her right before she wake up... and her narration tells about her mother's death in the same part too

I think the only difference is the first scene, reffering to the "promise"

Okay I got ready for this show by rewatching all of fruits baskets so I could compare and contrast. I know this adaptation is supposed to be more fleshed out so I’m very excited for this.

Fruits Basket was one of the first anime shows i ever watched! I originally watched it in Dub so I can’t really watch the old version with the Japanese VA and for some reason it’s a little awkward for me but not really (I’m sure I’ll get use to very quickly) and the Voice Acting was good!

The only thing I’m disappointed in is the PRINCE YUKI FAN CLUB DANCE ughhhh those queens were so powerful ... I want that back. And I sorta miss that roundish “noodle arm” design from the old show. I think that added a lot to the comedy but this is new animation, new staff so I’m expecting something new!

I also feel like this show moved quicker. It’s not bad or good it just has a different flow.

Overall this looks great! Everything looks clean the characters are as great as always and I’m excited for the next episode! I still hate yuki tho..... f*ck that rat

ah, even though it looks so polished and new, it still feels kinda old, but not in a bad sense. i'm getting almost some kind of nostalgia vibe from it, even though never read the source material before

looks like a really heartwarming title. the comedy is nice and the drama isn't force tear jerking. looking forward to see what it has to offer

also, to any manga readers. did this episode have any changes?

I believe they intend to change nothing in this adaptation. In the older version they skipped a few story lines and mainly focused on Tohru but this one should be extremely faithful

I just watched the first episode in English Dub and I can understand why some people feel somewhat disappointed with the performances of the original VAs, especially Yuki's who sounds as though he's has a cold(maybe the VA actually had one at the time of recording). However, it should be noted that it's been over a decade since they last voiced these characters so naturally they're going to sound a bit different since they're older now. I imagine we'll get used to it over time. Other than that, it's good to hear the old voices again after watching the 2001 version years ago.

Very good opening episode. I've been really looking forward to this remake since it was first announced and so far it looks pretty promising. Let's hope it delivers!
"You talk too much. Think too much."
"I don't care how justified you think your reasons are. I won't tolerate liars or thieves."
"If you're not going to be nice to me, don't expect me to be nice to you."
"I'm a soldier, not a superhero. Don't ever think of me as one."
"The world doesn't revolve around you. Get that through your thick skull."
"People who live by their emotions go nowhere in their lives. They only find misery.
"If you don't like the way your life is than do something about it instead of sitting there feeling sorry for yourself."
"You want something go get it. Period."

God what a nostalgia trip. I loved the little easter eggs in it too, for those of us old fans. The animation was crisp (for the most part) and I can't wait to fall in love with this series all over again. The Japanese seiyuu really fit their roles and I enjoyed hearing the old English VAs reprising their roles as well. I can't wait to see how closely this follows the manga!

I almost started crying lmao

The original is a must see for just about anyone that enjoys anime. I was a little concerned when I read that they were gonna do an actual remake because those don't usually turn out well. But after watching the first episode I am pleasantly surprised. They have updated the setting and artwork with out losing any of what made the original a top shoujo anime. I have good vibes for this.

I thought it'll be patterned similar to the original with the way they'd tell the story, but I'm glad they made some changes. And as always, the last scene when Kyo made an appearance made me LOL like it did the first time I watched this.

At a glance, a few minor changes. Nothing that greatly impacts the story, but would only be noticeable to anyone with a deep eye for comparing things to the manga.

-The brief scene where Tohru's admiring the city scenery before noticing Shigure's house is anime-only.
-When Yuki and Tohru start to walk together after school in the manga, Tohru's briefly intimidated by the Yuki Fan Club girls watching from some trees. This was cut from the anime.
-Tohru having a different set of clothes she wore while resting from her fever (had a kimono in the manga, anime has her dressed in the clothes she later wore when Yuki and Shigure offered her temporary stay at their house).

ah, i see. glad to hear that none of these were any impactful. was thinking of picking up the manga later on and see the differences, even if they're minor, myself. thanks for sharing

I really enjoyed it. I hope nothing much will be left out from the manga itself but from my bad memory, I don't think it was that bad and feels hit-on.

I am wondering if it'll be best to wait until its done airing but I'm so impatient for that. Gosh, honestly my childhood here; since my sister and I were fans with the manga so much. Can't wait for Haru. <3

What can i say about this? Fruits Basket is one of my very first watched anime, and mostly likely the first manga i ever remeber of reading, so has a really soft spot in my heart.

The remake itself is gorgeous, i love the art and the character design (bless the production by bringing back to mah boy Yuki, his original silver's eyes and hair from the manga). The ost is on point too. The show has a more serious tone than the 2001 version, and this kinda make me miss some of the comical relieve of the 2001 show (like the final scene, that had a more comical ost in the first anime) but there is nothing bad on the serious tone lmao.

The VA's are doing fine, but i am going to fave on Shimazaki, because even though i prefer Yuki's 2001 va (unpopular opinion here), Shimazaki still made a gorgeous job, and he surely can make me prefer his voice over the Hisakawa's one.

Now i can't wait to see more of the show though.

I honestly liked this first episode, enough to give the anime a chance. I think it looks promising. In addition, the protagonist is gracefully tender 😂. About the animation, it's not bad, it's decent 👌.
PS: I have not seen the first version of Fruit Basket. I thought the anime was about Basketball. LOL ... and it turns out that it's about the Japanese zodiac. What a surprise 😅

Remembered being forced to watch this twice and liking it. Getting no sense of nostalgia from this though. Maybe it's the shiny new designs. Or I need to watch the dub. Also not sure I'll enjoy this as much as back then, but if nothing else there should be a proper ending this time.

I loved this! I think they did the old anime justice. I barely saw any scenes that were left out from the original, only a few seconds. I think the character models, though Yuki and Kyo have a slightly different look to them. Did great! This anime looks so charming and i cant wait for the rest of it to air. Especially when it gets to the good parts, near the end of the show. This is my favorite anime and i've been waiting a long time for a reboot. Very happy with what they did! 10/10 would recommend watching this one and the original 2001 version. :) <3

Actually the original was 26 episodes but only adapted 7 volumes of the manga. I'm guessing we will get far more than just a season this time.

Since I haven't watched the old Fruits Basket anime, this will be a good opportunity for me.

Though I'm not really a huge shoujo fan, I like the premise.
The characters are pretty nice too.
Also the animation is pretty decent and I hope it continues to be like that.

Such an impressive premiere episode. Even without watching the Deen + Akitarou original, at least having the mangaka herself is a major plus to fulfilling her dreams after 20 years.

Chapter 1 + Chapter 2 starting pages adapted to its complete greatness.

Anticipating more of this, since I presume it's gonna be 26 episodes (2-cour) + another season coming in the future.

For a person thats never seen the show or the manga, I am throughly surprised how much I loved this first episode. The characters are hilarious and very ... sympathetic. Plus, the main girl seems hilarious and I want to know more about the guy at the end!

It's the same as the original only not as focused on the comedy and more the main story of the Somas and the Zodiacs now which is good. I haven't finished the Manga, but I want to keep myself open for surprises in later episodes that didn't happen in the original.

I also watched it dubbed and hearing Laura Bailey as Tohru again really hit home then at the end with Jerry Jewell voicing Kyo ... I love it.

The art is also very beautiful.

They adapted most of it perfectly, only flaw is that the comedy is a bit lackluster but it's not a big deal breaker for me.

I like Yuki's new character design & JP voice better.

Decent first episode I guess. I already read the entire manga before watching the 2001 anime many years ago so I don't give a shit about that adaption.

I wanted a cute little animated story for the zodiac legend... And what was this intro?

Good timing, I was expecting the transformation as soon as a pre-eyecatch scene but they took their time.
It looked alright, except for the weird designs: the length of Tôru's face, the Soma men looking uglier than usual (Shigure q-p), the eyes, ... Only the side characters really remind me of the manga visually.
The comedic tone chosen by Daichi, that suited the first chunk of the manga pretty well, will be missed.

4/5 This smoke effect, they went for a 2000s series look?! XD

"1st season" ⇒ ar we getting 2 full-length series ?

@Farabeuf I think your memory is toying with you.

@UrbanJahts Faster? The transition from scene to scene?

@cntrldfision I didn't pay enough attention, what was changed to transpose it from the 2000s to the 2010s?

Haven't watched the old anime or read the manga but loved this first episode! So many likable characters already. I loved the two delinquent friends even tho they're unaware of Tooru's situation. And Kyo have my heart with only 5 seconds of appearance and saying like two words. I know most people would prefer the rat guy but I'll stay true to my ship till the end, though it ever sailing is highly unlikely.

Anyway, nice voice acting, specially Tooru's mom and nice ending!

I'm not very surprised about the Yuki-centric ending tbh. It kind of starts that way until we get farther into the story and we get more Kyo-centric because of the way he was and how he fixes his relationship within the Sohma clan thanks to Tohru.

Anyways I really loved the first episode. Which I was very excited to watch and was not disappointed at all ;;

The first anime was very special to me, it had cute animation, the songs were calming and memorable to this day, although I wasn't fond of Yuki and at first Tohru, the latter grew on me. My favourite out of all that first anime was Kyo and his VA.

But for this new one, I'm impressed how they've retained the humour and I absolutely love Tohru's best friends already (which I also loved in the manga), I liked how Yuki is portrayed and Zakki does a good job with his character (can't wait for him to flesh him out) and Yuukyan as Shigure is a good choice lol I can't wait for more episodes of my fave boi: Kyo ;u; (and absolutely enjoying Tohru already and her VA is doing a good job so far)

Overall, that episode was more than I expected and I wish for this quality to continue. I loved the first anime but I have no qualms about this new one and consider them both to be their own thing so I'm good. (I had a harder time with FMA:B coz I really loved the first one >.>)

I believe with the help of the author, this will be just as special as the first one.
