i really like dark stories but this one took it to another level. i'm so sad for mio and the children that i can't even give a damn about hyakkimaru saying something (mio's name for christ's sake) for the first time

The way Hyakkimaru is now experiencing emotions he never felt before, is really well done. The way he was holding Mio and called out her name as his first word was so emotional.
Too bad that he never gets to see her, his first love, with his proper eyesight. :((
As you said, what a rollercoaster of feels.

I actually didn't think of that at all, since he's yet only able to see colours for the souls... that legit made me sadder :(

Maybe I'm just a monster, but I felt more for Hyakkimaru than those who died this episode.

Mio was sweet, and of course I felt sorry for her, especially when she'd finally got the seed rice for her paddy, but I just didn't feel much at her death. I think it's partly because it was so expected, and partly because, truthfully, I found her character very bland. She was kind and self-sacrificing, but... I don't know, maybe she was too 1-dimensional, too much of a saint to be believable. In the end she just felt like a plot device to create tragedy for Hyakkimaru. And the children - aside from Take, we didn't know them at all. It goes without saying that grown men cutting down innocent, crippled children like that is beyond horrific, but still...

Hyakkimaru's rampage was visceral and satisfying.

I'm glad they didn't have him magically able to speak now that his voice has returned, that would have been stretching belief a bit far. The way he can understand people is already something I find difficult to get my head around, I'm not sure how or if they plan to explain that. When Mio asked him to try to speak, he obviously knew what she was saying to him, but how? And if he can understand words, wouldn't it follow that he can say them? Unless... his way of understanding is something different to what's normal, like he 'senses' the meaning of what's said to him but doesn't comprehend the words as such...

This anime shows that named attacks or dialogues between fights aren´t neccesary. That slaugher scene was exciting and terrifying at the same time, and the parts when Dororo shows the grains and when Hyakkimaru calls Mio´s name broke my heart.

The leader who told them to look for spies is Daigo's subordinate.
You can tell that they're Daigo's soldiers from their symbol. It's the same symbol that Hyakkimaru has. Plus, the leader literally said "watch for Sakai spies"
Sakai's army appeared only when Mio did her job at 15:10. Their symbol is different from Daigo.

Was it Daigo's? It was the Sakai army that started looking for spies, and suddenly its Daigo's soldiers lynching "spies?

Yeah same here. Mio was a sweet girl, sure but nothing more. They obviously couldn't develop her personality in 2 episodes or give her any depth at all, so her main function was as a plot device. That doesnt mean I dislike her tho I still think her rare moments with Hyakkimaru were sweet to watch, especially the last one in ep 6 where they sit together and she sang her song.

I honestly expected her to live longer btw, I feel like they killed her of to early. A couple more episodes with her might have not been bad. It just feels so rushed, not just with Mio. The pacing is my only problem with this anime right now.

Dororo called him bro when trying to get him to calm down... that just really got me.

I also can't get over the powerful statement of Hyakkimaru becoming weaker the more human he becomes.

This show already had my top spot on the season since week 1 but now it's flying way ahead.

This is one of the few grimdark anime where the bleakness feels completely natural and doesn't come across as juvenile shock value. Anime studios and authors should take note...
This series is still nothing compared to how 'dark' Goblin Slayer from last Fall was. *LMAO*

Goblin Slayer episode 1's attempt at establishing a dark tone is exactly what I would describe as "cheap shock value" due to how hamfisted it is in its execution. Its like the they thought "how to convey that this story is suuuper dark? Oh yeah, graphic displays of cute anime girls being violently raped." Its the sort of amateurish writing you would expect from an edgy teenager, not a professional author. But I guess the anime studio is at fault for the overly gratuitous nature of the episode rather than the novel author.

Question: Can or cannot Hyakkimaru understand what people are saying? If Hyakkimaru has never been able to hear his whole life, how would he understand language?

I've been wondering this for a while. There have been instances in the last couple of episodes where he did obviously understand things that were said (episode 5, when the priest spoke about the demon and Hyakkimaru immediately left to fight it; this episode, when Mio asked him to try speaking). The best I have just now is that he has some instinctive, telepathic-like understanding of what's said, that goes below the level of language. Maybe it's an aspect of the demonic power inside him. If he could understand in a normal way, he surely would have tried to speak at some point, you'd think he'd be desperate to communicate. But I don't think he knows words (not yet, anyway).

Rather than being demonic maybe it's purely human instinct? Like the way a baby reacts to the sound of its parents voices (he's kind of a like an infant in that respect). I think it makes sense if he catches onto context through the nature of the sounds themselves, i.e., how Mio's singing is soothing whereas yelling and crying are harsh. It's probably also easier to catch on to names. Seems he learned Mio's name, maybe because that was the utterance he heard constantly whenever she was in his presence.

Nearly 2 decades since I first read the manga, and this anime made the scene even more depressing, albeit less brutal.

Gotta say that both happenings had very different build-ups and character developments and interactions however,I can't really compare tbh

Nonetheless, just as great in its own way.

4.5/5 (only a tad bit rushed at the middle and by the end)

What an incredible ride this was!

Sadly, the pacing and direction was a little hasty but good thing the writing delivered making the whole episode really just an incredible ride, like I mentioned before. Hyakkimaru’s vicious rampage there st the end was on point and the buildup to it was amazing, seeing him chop one samurai after another was so very satisfying! I didn’t think it’d be the end of Mio there though, god dang it, I should’ve known considering the number of times that sad melody was on repeat. And those kids, good lord, how lowly of an assault this was but during war times these kind of things do happen and are necessary in the long run but still gutted. I just don’t see why you’d have to slaughter the kids one after the other though, guess it just goes to show just how grim this show can get. The blind man’s final words to Dororo came to reality after all, good foreshadowing as such.

Just a little confusion over Hyakkimaru’s leg growing back and him still retaining his voice though, was it because his lower leg was snatched away that he got his voice back? If so, why didn’t he lose his voice once his lower leg grew back? And then there’s the whole big question mark when the return of his voice too. Can’t wait till we find these answers!

Eagerly looking forward to the next episode!

I'm pretty sure his voice wasn't something held captive, and that it's release was inevitable after he began to hear and feel pain, hence its return as a gut-wrenching scream when he lost his leg at the end of the last episode.

They were actually burned alive as well. The anime was more sad though because how you see Hyaki break down and him saying Mio as his first words. She only appeared in a short flashback of like 4 panels and was Hyaki’s lover in the manga. The anime made us attached to her hardddd

This episode is Contender for episode of the year, as is this series itself for some of the year. So many emotions in such a short 20 minutes, while not making it feel cluttered with unnecessary forced story bits. Truly an amazing episode.

Damn... sad is an understatement for this episode I feel like shit after this, the only thing I didn't want to happen... happened, that ending song after all of that, no words to describe it
Glad I watch it, I'm really numb to war news and such in real life, but it's like here it's another meaning when the show makes you empathize on this level with the characters and their lives.

Well, I said last episode that I had the feeling that this all would end in tragedy... I hate being right sometimes, damn it!

On a side note, it's not 100% certain because the kids and Mio were basically in the middle of two enemy camps but I think they would have lived a bit longer if only Mio wouldn't have decided to go to the other camp... and that fact makes everything even sadder.

All in all, it was a "good" episode, it conveyed the emotions of the characters in a proper way. However, the thing I found somewhat odd was the last minutes. I don't know, it felt a bit rushed with both Hyakkimaru and Dororo just leaving like if it were just another episode where the progression felt more episodic. I just hope Mio's importance doesn't end here and she has more relevance in Hyakkimaru's personality from now on.

P.S.: I don't know if someone will answer me but I was a bit confused about how Dororo's mother died... did she die by starvation? or was she assaulted and then killed?

That episode was very serious. I appreciate anime with great storytelling and realistic events/emotions (aside from the fighting demons in the show). And Dororo didn't shy away from showing how war affects people in this episode. It really tore my heart out. I really liked those kids and Mio. They were great people. But then when Hyakkimaru slaughtered those soldiers shit got real! Great episode. And unpredictable. Didn't know they were gonna kill the kids too *cries*

Goddamit please tell me I wasn't the only one that was crying when the kids and Mio were getting killed? Hyakkimaru's outrage moment was so satisfying though after those men killed her and the kids for her whoring herself to the other army. At least he grew his leg back, I was surprised at that part.

Shit, is it possible to love an anime but also hate it at the same time for how emotional certain moments are, because I'm caught in a loop rn. The end of episode 5 got me so hard, but knowing the era it takes place in and all the hints given that episode I knew she was doing a regrettable job.

Fuck man, I need to watch Kaguya to get rid of this aching feeling. My heart can only take so much sadness at once

that's an actual good way to think about it. Trading his leg for his voice and then getting both back when killing the monster
