No, the writers fucked up and had conflicting lore.
While that could be an explanation, the way I see it is that in the eyes of adventurers the dude is just abusing the quest system to climb doing low entry missions for his gain, but to the citizens he is as much of a Hero as they come, he didn't turn his back to the common folk.
If the common folk see goblins as equally important or even more so, why are there no other heroes like him who just want to be admired by the people? Why wouldn't the experience system be more reflective of the fact that killing goblins is also very important if the common folk admire GS that much for it? I would assume completing quests is ultimately about helping people?
I think it's just a plot hole.
The common folks who does appreciate Goblin Slayer's thankless job are the poor villagers from the frontier, the ones whose village has no stone walls against goblins. This means GS's fame/notoriety diminished the further away from the frontier. He is not as famous/well received as the demon god slaying hero from the capital than he was in the frontier. Because goblin threats are mostly exclusive to the frontier, no one in the capital is really making a fuss about some autistic dude massacring small fries in the boonies.
I would argue the experience system does reflect on his 5 years of hardwork slaying goblin. He is in fact obtained the highest rank possible on field (gold rank and above are strictly supervised by the kingdom and are treated as living nuke in that regard) by just slaying goblins autistic-ally for 5 years.
No, the primary motivation for adventurers is fame and money. No one really give a damn about the livelihood of some peasants. As for fame, I would say it would be easier if one to obtain equal fame in a shorter period of time by slaying a bigger prey, ie dragons and ogres than massacring goblins autistic-ally.
If heroes want fame, why are not more heroes on the frontier like GS?
Also, if goblins are just small fry compared to these bigger monsters, but you can still make a lot of money reliably and relatively safely compared to other jobs, why don't more people specialize in it instead of risking their lives fighting a dragon?
There indeed does has heroes in the frontier and GS is hardly to be considered one. In case you miss it, most adventurers is dismissive towards GS' deeds and considered him doing a 'foul play' to be recognized as Silver by just killing goblins since it is usually require one to slay large prey to be one. So why would newbies aspire to be a glorified pest exterminator instead of more better sounding title like Ogre Slayer and Dragon Slayer unless one is as vengeful and autistic (a praise) as GS? GS is hero for the poor and not aspiring hero for would be adventurers.
Because every quest has risks involve in it and the reward for goblin slaying does not cover for the cost and risk it brings. Those who can slay beasts stronger than goblins would of course aim for beasts that brings higher profit. Those who can't would most likely die early or quit the profession altogether. GS managed to make a profit out of his pest extermination business because he uses only cheap equipment (lower maintenance costs), work almost every day and has no other hobby than slaying goblin.
Imagine if you're a capable Silver rank adventurer. Would you want to live a life of luxury, showered with praise by slaying dragon and ogre readily twice a week, receive a hefty reward, and have sufficient day off to do other stuff? Or would you want a life that make ends meet, slaying goblins every day, receive meager reward that still not enough cover for your expenditure( unless you wish to live like GS) and only receive occasional praise from poor villagers that doesn't worth a penny?
