While this is an excellent series, I will quote Murry Hope's "Practical Egyptian Magic" in regards to the misuse of words such as "Magus" and "Magician":
"Magic, or, more accurately, Magism," says Christian in his Hidoire de la Magie, "if anyone would condescend
to return to its antique origin, could be no longer con-
founded with the superstitions which calumniate its
memory. Its name is derived to us from the Greek
words Magos, a Magician, and Mageia, Magic, which are
merely permutations of the terms Mog, Megh, Magh,
which in Pehlvi and in Zend, both languages of the eld-
est East, signify ' priest,' ' wise,' and ' excellent.' It was
thence also that, in a period anterior to historic Greece,
there originated the Chaldsean name Maghdim, which is
equivalent to ' supreme wisdom,' or sacred philosophy.
Thus, mere etymology indicates that Magic was the
synthesis of those sciences once possessed by the Magi
or philosophers of India, of Persia, of Chaldsea, and of
Egypt, who were the priests of nature, the patriarchs of
knowledge, and the founders of those vast civilisations
whose ruins still maintain, without tottering, the burden
of sixty centuries."

Likewise, with matters such as Fae in pre-Christian Europe, nobody truly believed in physical Elves, Dwarves, or Giants - they were simply metaphors. The belief (concocted by hollywood) that our ancestors were a bunch of pointlessly-violent, idiotic drunkards is hilarious.

If we ever discover fantasy-like "magic", however, I'll be more than happy. I'd like to live my life as a horned man with a 16 year old wife (without getting dirty looks from bitter old hags), in an idyllic alternate England in which I won't be stabbed by a somali/gypsy/chav/etc.

Knowing nothing of this series before watching this episode, the title is a little questionable. Not sure how I feel about a child being raised to be a bride other than it sounds off putting. Going by the character descriptions, a man/fairy buys a child on the black market. Said child eventually becomes his bride/wife. And the man is old AF, literally ancient, and not even entirely human. At first glance, it sounds like some kind of pedophilia/bestiality shit. But that seems too superficial given it's popularity. Going to have to dive in deeper before I form a solid opinion, otherwise I may be jumping the gun on a potentially really good story.

Overall the first episode gives a Mushishi or Studio Gibli kind of feel...but more darker, or your usual Yokai story like Natsume's Book of Friends. Visuals, music, pacing all looking really good. I'm interested in seeing the next episode now.

lol Anime and Hollywood love ripping concepts from different Cultures without knowing the real meanings all the time.

With hollywood it's intentional, with the Japanese they're just uninformed (not blaming them, no-one should be forced to learn about the culture of a foreign race, we get enough of that crap in the "education system" of "western" nations despite virtually nobody understanding their own culture and traditions. It makes me sick to my stomach).

OVA prequel about Chise's adventures as a child. Animation and art was great. VA's were nice picks, though I imagined Ruth to be a bit older. Uchiyama works fine though.
Time to wait forever and a day for the second episode. orz

Finally got my hands on this. At first i thought it was strange why the original story wasn't adapted (manga is just great), but after watching this episode i must say it was amazing and i'm really okay with the side story (still thinking that it's like a promo to upcoming season even as it feels like a "full-series").
Watched the trailer and was imressed by the artstyle and animation, but with a lot of more stuff especially how the magic was showed it was really great! I think that this story should be the part that author wanted to use in the manga, but for some reason hesitated and it stayed like a backup script (mb he even planned it to be animated). Waiting for the next episode and hope/expect to keep this level.

So.. if I'm understanding right the 3rd episode won't be out until this time next year?

I could understand if this was a biannual movie-length OVA series.. but fuck. Long wait for 19 minute episodes.

Not bad. Pretty sad life story MC girl have. This is basically what Flying Witch should have been and what I expected of it. Really nice first OVA.

Now the real question is how young Elias got his bonehead.. or does he only appear as man in the human world? Guess I'll have to wait half a year to get a complete story, well, well...
Maybe I should really read the manga, right?

Looks like a nice little magic story. A bit like ghibli movies. I like this a lot.
I just hope it wont be to short.

Oh wow. Stuff like this so great, just unapologetically in it's own world and ready to take you for a ride.

I have little doubt that a series or movie would make huge success if they can maintain an atmosphere like this. An anime with an incredible amount of promise, they better get a full production made and not call it off or something because an ova didn't get enough sales due to limited advertising... that would suck.

I was expecting something a bit different since the first episode and the synopsis didn't match (I assume the events of the synopsis happen in the next two episodes). I still enjoyed it, though. For some twisted reason I get a thrill out of watching shows where kids have really horrible youths. It's gonna be a hell of a wait for the next episode.

Everything normal, nothing different from what I have seen in other anime, similar as narration and setting. The designs are cute and well finished, but not to the level of an OVA, worthy of respect; if we compare the graphic level reached by KyoAni in a TV series. Animations good, but not superb. The soundtrack, however, is pleasant and well accorded with the views situations. Very impressive backdrops, but the graphic level, it's just good, but not spectacular.

I love how the animation has a very ghibli look to it. I would have given it 5/5 but it doesn't follow the manga, which is to be expected since it's only a OVA, but I love the manga so much that it's a shame this isn't a full anime series instead.

Now, Titania, shall we bet? If those two would get along.
Rather than that, it would be better to bet on how many are made.

The "romance" creeps me out and is rather off-putting. How she blushed when he pushed his face closer and sat on his lap? It's just so weird -- she's like a little girl. I hope it doesn't focus much on the "love" or whatever between them. Very strange. I really don't like that premise of him "grooming" her to be his bride (not to mention he looks quite scary). Gives me shivers, it's like Stockholm Syndrome or something. I hope it'll end up as a father-daughter relationship. It would be so much more meaningful and less pedophilic.

That bothered me a lot, but other than that, I absolutely loved it. The characters are revealed subtly, the creature designs are whimsical, her backstory is heartbreaking, and everything is tied together with the absolutely gorgeous animation. Like holy crap, there is so much detail in some of these scenes -- it's so refreshing.

Even despite all that, if this romance continues in the way it seems it will, I don't know how I'll be able to stomach this show. It's incredibly off-putting for me.

First, it was weird without rhyme and then it was even weirder but depressive also. Why am I watching this? Could somebody tell me what is this about? I guess OVA is only for manga readers? I know/guess premise from anotation, but 1 OVA is confusing, I try second part to better understand. Also normal anime is planned to air this year? So this is teaser for it?

This anime reminded me of Natsume Yuujinchou during the red hair girl's backstory. Then it became Spirited Away with the creature that looks like No Face. Haha. And holy shit that animation quality, though.

Great job, Wit Studio. Ugh that was a beautiful 1st episode.

Love this. The flashback is sad and I'm feeling bad for Chise. Elias is lolicon :D, Chise reminds me of Natsume from Natsume Yuujinchou that can see supernatural thing and have a bad childhood.

Overall, good OVA

I thought of Natsume too! Although so far, the creatures she sees seems to be a lot scarier. It's a shame to have to go through all that as a child, especially on your own. At least for Natsume, he did meet "nice" yokai even if he didn't understand their sometimes wild/erratic behavior.
Anyways, this OVA (just finished all 3) was sad but nice. It makes me want to read the manga and I'll definitely see the series when season 1 is complete.
