This was a decent finale. Sumire got emotional and had a nice conversation with Haruki. Everything worked out at the end. This boring show is finally finished. 1/10

Dammit, I wanted more from the epilogue lol. Another episode that is set a few years later would be nice.

Really a great callback to the pebble discussion from the beginning of the series.

This was one of the most satisfying and well-handled endings I have ever gotten from an anime. Very emotional conclusions to the character stories. Haruki regains all of her memories that were erased from Resets. Soma realized that she is indeed the real Soma Sumire and not the nameless carbon copy she believed she was.

---

One of the things I liked most about the series was the way the story progressed. In the beginning, the characters are rather closed-off and almost seemed dull. Much of the communication between characters is done through riddles, thought experiments, or metaphorical stories. Over 1/4 of viewers quit watching the show just because the characters were "boring and emotionless." However, as Ive said before, the characters were intentionally made this way, and in that respect they are very well written. The characters at first seem to be static, but in the second half, they turn out to be dynamic characters with internal change

Haruki is a very timid and unambitious girl with zero self confidence. She lives strictly by her own set of rules, but she also has a high dependency upon others. However, in the second half, she slowly realizes her own desires and preferences; and eventually, she is able to act on her own accord. Haruki also begins to feel resentment and jealousy towards Soma, sensing her as a threat of being replaced as Kei's partner.

Kei is a very level-headed character who is able to develop a plan for any situation. Soma, having the ability of clairvoyance, is naturally several steps ahead of Kei's plans and uses him; however, she also depends on Kei in her shortcomings. Kei and Soma are very similar characters in that they both act out of selfishness, but their selfish desires also coincide with the interests of the people who are dear to them. Kei does everything in his power to stop Urachi from erasing abilities from Sakurada for selfish reasons; however, he also wants to rescue Soma from her internal conflicts. Soma goes as far as killing herself and using Kei for her plans to selfishly escape her fate of being captured by the Bureau and becoming the second Witch; however, at the same time she chooses her actions with the desire to fulfill Kei's happiness. Soma is deeply conflicted because she wants to be the one that Kei loves; but she knows he will choose Haruki, not her. In the very beginning of the show, Soma brings Kei and Haruki together for the sake of both her plans and Kei's happiness, knowing that it will ultimately damage their relationship. Soma acts for Kei's happiness even though it pains her.

---

Another aspect of this series that is really well-done is the use of abilities. This isnt just some shounen anime that shows off flashy supernatural powers; and it isnt a repeat of Charlotte's trainwreck. The series is good at defining both what the ability can do, and what limitations the ability has. The show also focuses on how different abilities can be used together in complex ways to achieve the characters' goals.

Right up front, we are told Haruki's Reset ability has 3 limits: she can only Save once every 24 hrs; and that save only lasts for 72 hours; and like everyone else, she loses memories after a reset. However, with Kei's Perfect Memory ability, together they are able to circumvent Haruki's memory loss flaw and effectively change the past. Kei instructs Haruki to Save immediately before a pivotal point in time; then he uses the next 72 hours to discover the events that happen; then instructs Haruki to Reset before the Save expires, so he can change the past. Because Haruki can only Save once every 24 hours, Kei only has one chance to change what happens in the first day after a Reset; however he effectively has 3 chances to change the events that happened in the final 24 hours of the 72 hour window.

Urachi's ability first seems like it can only remove people's memories; however, he actually has the ability to turn back the time for one specific object. He uses his ability to frequently turn back the time for his own mind, thus intentionally losing memories. This can be used to circumvent Sakuin's lie detection and Soma's clairvoyance, which depends on conversation. Kagaya's ability first seems like it can only be used to lock/seal doors; however his ability permanently seals objects in space and time, and can be used to petrify people, or freeze the exact current condition of an object. Object that are sealed with Kagaya's hand do not change even after a Reset. Therefore, Urachi uses Kagaya's ability to seal notebooks that contain his memories; that way he can later remember the things he intentionally forgot.

There are also a couple occasions where several abilities are used together to accomplish a goal. There were 5-6 (i forget) people and abilities involved in reviving Soma. Another number of abilities were used together to bluff the Bureau and kidnap Urachi. The well-defined structure of abilities and the ways abilities are used are what makes the supernatual aspect of the story interesting.

Kei being the real villian, interesting theory.

I think people's abilities are what defined their personalities, but most of them seem just scripted to be that way.

Their abilities may be a double edged sword. But IMO, Kei saw a way to use their abilities for the greater good. And making each of them realize their abilities could be used to bring happiness to everyone, instead of being hurted by them over and over.

Instead of rejecting themselved because of their innate abilities, embracing them and using them to their full power helps a lot more.

And, even if Kei took the top position in the Administration, he stated that others will have to evaluate him, so, the Administration goes from a Police-State with no real leader to something closer to a Constitutional Monarchy, so even if Kei makes mistakes, others will be there to prevent him from making a disaster.

Masamune's world without powers was a world where everything went to average again, sure, it made people happy, but put them in the hands of luck again.

Personally I'd take Kei's world.

I found the dialogue between Haruki and Soma interesting and show that even Kei makes mistakes. For me the flashback showing the kiss between Haruki and Kei was one of the best scenes of the episode. The ending was nice with the background music.

I'll rate it 7/10 because the show was quite good but to be honest I didn't find it enjoyable.
I watched it till the end just for the story. I think the series would be 10/10 if only the characters were different. They had their doubts, fears etc but the fact that they lacked emotions (or rather did not express them like most normal teenagers would) made them seem quite unrealistic imo.

I'd argue that their abilities are a manifestation of a trauma or other event that drastically impacted their lives. They've mentioned several times that their abilities came to be after a certain significant event in their lives. They didn't explain this out for every character, but it's enough to draw that conclusion. So saying that their trauma or that one moment defines them would honestly feel offensive. That Mother's child dying at birth defines the rest of her life? That seems very wrong and unhealthy, at least to me.

By the way, this is another good example of Kei literally preventing someone from moving on from their trauma by getting her to continue using that girl created by her ability as a crutch for coping with it in an unhealthy way. Good job, Kei.

Zahylon said:

'Good' is subjective. I'd argue that Kei's actions were not 'good' in the utilitarian sense, but only from his perspective.
Remember, only around half of the people have abilities and the people without are inconvenience plenty by the people with.

It's easy for Kei to manipulate others if he shows clear signs of being a sociopath but has an ability that literally boosts his knowledge base and grants insight that others couldn't have.

He wants to be God. If you think that's a good thing, then I can't really argue anything against that; but I don't see it as 'good'.

Based on my previous point, using their abilities is equivalent to rejecting themselves. As Urachi has said himself, their abilities are a crutch for them.

You wouldn't need a crutch if you were fine, and you wouldn't need a crutch forever if you were going to get better. But Kei wants to prevent them from ever outgrowing those events and getting better so that he can continue to be entertained by abilities in his personal seat as God, pretending others have a say when we've never seen him let anyone but Souma take the lead (which is only because he trusts her to act in 'his' best interest).

Zahylon said:

That depends on your idea of 'luck'. Urachi didn't seem to depend on luck so much as personal effort. Saying luck is the only way your life bears fruit would make working towards a goal pointless. Personal effort, growth, and self-betterment were really Urachi's whole point.

In the end, my biggest problem is the fact that Souma(Best Girl) wasn't granted a normal life where she's allowed to develop a sense of self and feel like more than someone acting out a script her entire life. That's something that was obvious and received enough focus to make abilities seem like a bad thing all on its own. I wish Kei had made her leave Sakurada for good if she was just going to come back to continue living a life that could drive her to suicide.

I feel, like probably many people who enjoyed Sakurada Reset, like it's really hard to get into this show, but once you do it's pretty good. I rate it as solid 7/10. Probably not a AOTS or AOTY, but still interesting and somehow refreshing story with "super powers".

Well it's finally over. To be honest, even though the show really picked up during the last third, it was still a chore to get through each week. The characters all seemed very robotic and boring, which led to their conversations also being rather boring, and that caused me to fall asleep many times. It got to the point where I would congratulate myself if I could make it through an episode without falling asleep. The story also felt somewhat boring and sluggish at times as well, which, again, made me fall asleep. I honestly became so focused on simply not falling asleep that I stopped caring about trying to understand the story, so I never really felt any gratification when something satisfying happened or when something that was foreshadowed X episodes ago was brought up again, because I would barely remember whatever it was that laid the foundation for that eventual payoff. It's a shame because this show sounded really interesting when it was first announced, but the way it was presented was really different from what I expected. I feel like this show would be a better experience if you watch it all at once, instead of having to wait for one episode week after week, so at some point in the future maybe I'll re-watch this and see if that changes my thoughts.

And before anyone quotes me spouting some smartass, pretentious bullshit like "oh you're not smart enough to understand this kind of show go back to your battle shounen you braindead pleb," that's NOT the reason why I didn't like this show. Everything I said was simply my own opinion, and isn't the result of anything like only enjoying action shows or wanting to be spoonfed every detail of the story without having to use my brain. I'm totally fine with shows like this as long as they find a way to make it engaging and entertaining, and PERSONALLY, I didn't feel that way with this show.

Agree with you whole-heartedly.

Pretty much at times I watched it 3-4 eps at a time, still I felt the characters to be the weakest part of show, so bland and just spouting off speeches without any sincere mass in what they are conveying. I still don't know why Kei wanted to cut off Haruki's beautiful long hair. If she's cute , she should carve a scar on her face? Still, everything that went well was convenient "acc to plan" and that which was not was reset with particular effect remaining behind.

I thought it was a great thought-provoking show with a lot of heavy dialogues and metaphors. The story was unique and enjoyable with the whole supernatural abilities and the past behind them. Though I did have to stop from time to time and read up on what was going on as the it got more intense. The last 8 episodes were filled with so many emotions and depth. It almost reminded me of Kimi no na wa and Charlotte.

However, the characters did lack some development but it was bearable since they were interesting to watch. Their relationship was bittersweet especially of Kei and Soma. I mean it was clearly obvious that he initially liked Soma and had a guilty conscious due to her death which became the main reason behind his motivation that brought him closer to Haruki. Although there was no clear conclusion to this love triangle I feel like Kei will pick Haruki considering their time together and all the indications. Besides I also like Haruki and Kei's chemistry more since they act so much like a married couple. But I also feel bad for Soma considering everything she did for Kei.

It's a little sad that it's so underrated on mal and doesn't get the credit it deserves. Even the manga and LN ended back in 2012. I would love to see a sequel of how Sakurada turns out after Kei gains all the abilities but it will never happen.

I heard so many bad thing about this anime that I nearly removed it from my PTW. I'm glad I didn't. It's one of those cases where I not only don't agree with other's opinion but also don't understand it at all. After all those complaints I should see flaws more, but instead I barely saw any. It was damn solid show from the very beginning, not boring for a second and not confusing at all.

Aaaand.... nothing was really resolved.

We were given way to solution but nothing that would keep the abilities in check. It's bit easy to say that Kei would work towards the perfect system but everyone knows that it wouldn't work well not matter what in the future. The abilities has to go and with it their overdependence on using them. Sadly, the main character never changed his worldview, was never forced to sacrifice anything.

Also, his methods when he was literally forcing his opinions onto others and causing suffering for them were highly questionable if anything. I don't think someone as selfish as him should be proven right everytime from beginning to the very end. There certainly should have been some episode when he would realize his mistakes, something that would served as mirror to his forceful acts.

And there is no way Souma would be happy in the future as she'll still love him. I get it it's bittersweet ending but it did nothing to Kei, he didn't changed at all.

The problem of this anime is that it ephasized Souma's feelings and emotions a lot better than Haruki's so the viewer logically route for her. Should Souma win him in the end, should he realized that his obsession to save her is actually proof of his feelings to her, it would be a lot better. And I bet even Haruki would get more independence not leaning on Kei's wishes so closely (he basically used her as a tool most of the time and she hasn't go through any real developement).

I'm not saying this anime is bad, it was even great in its second part (mostly thanks to Yuuki Aoi and intriguing use of abilities) but there certainly were some flaws like bad presentation in the beginning or some boring parts in the middle. In the last two eps the series slowed down its pace which also wasn't the best (although the calm resolution with Souma-Kei-Misora was okayish I guess). It also never explained properly why both main characters acted so logical and cold - there certainly wansn't any reason for it - or should I say it - even if they experienced some trauma before it wouldn't left them emotionless for the most part.

6/10 It was actually non-ending and if there is no second season (probably not), can't rate it any higher.
It didn't live up to all expectations but I still recommend it - if only for all those thought-provoking conversations that kept me intrigued.

Enjoyed the show a lot but second half felt a little weaker than first half, there was just way too much focus on the Soma x Kei x Haruki love triangle (which turned out fine by the end of the series), instead of giving us (or me) more Haruki x Kei romance. Last arc was fantastic though.

Overall a really pleasant journey, albeit somewhat confusing at times. Great use of soundtrack as well. Would've preferred a little bit more closure, or an epilogue though, wanted to see a married Kei/Haruki and a Bureau member Kei.

We rarely see 20+ episodes anime nowadays and even a completed one.

Sorry I might have missed this somehwere.
The only thing I don't understand, what is Sumire's motivation to do all that things? She knew in the future that the abilites will be erased and did many things to prevent that.

The whole story will not exists if Sumire did not take any action.
She can just live on ignoring that, that way she did not need to introduce Haruki to Kei and she can live with him happily later.

Yes, that's her in middle school. It's not likely she cheated death, the real 'she' is already dead. The new 'she' was 'made' using the abilites, just like the little kid. Remember the Slumpman story?

They actually can make multiple Sumire using that technique, I was hoping they somehow went to this path. I'm curious what will happen lol

I really enjoyed this show quite a bit. Sure, the characters were pretty wooden but the plots were well scripted. They could make a puzzle game out of this. What's interesting is the voice-acting was fairly consistent across a large cast of characters -- in how plainly they spoke.

Well this turned out to be quite a ride. I wasn't too high on this show initially. The monotonous way many of the characters spoke made it feel a bit lifeless and boring. Thankfully it picked up and by the end turned into a roller coaster of intrigue and excitement. Seriously Kei's battle of wits with Urachi over the last few episodes was pretty awesome to watch unfold. It reminded me of the best parts of Death Note, only perhaps even more impressive. The whole Haruki Soma Kei love triangle was interesting. From early on I was rooting for Haruki, so I'm glad that came to pass but also was pleased to see Soma avoid her initial fate. Near the end I actually began to get bad vibes that something might happen to Haruki but thankfully that was avoided. And yeah, she's definitely making the right call in deciding to grow her hair out again. :D I'm feeling a strong 7 or a generous 8 with this one. I'll give it the latter.

Finally managed to complete this crap, after what was a whole year of trying. As expected, best girl lost, worst ever girl won, but the biggest selfish ass is Kei, forcefully making poor Souma stay by his side for the rest of her life and watch from upclose him romancing her much inferior love rival. What a fucker. If you ask me, it's a fate worse than death.

It's sad for souma and it's pretty tragic but it's hard for me to feel that much for her since she didn't even have that much screentime with Kei. There wasn't that much interaction at all when u compare them to Haruki and Kei.

Kind of an underwhelming final episode, I was expecting something more dramatic, but it was still good none the less.

It ends with the world similar to how it always was and allows the two of them to continue working together.

Yap overall this is a good anime with a really complicated story, but the ending is really clear. Maybe so many people drop this because that complicated and maybe a little boring with soo many chit chat, but I think that's necessary for anime like this to have many conversations. Yeah I think a little selfish is normal for anyone, it's not an evil thought. Yeah being selfish is a prove that you have something precious and special to you and that's perfectly fine I think. And happy ending, no need to sacrifice anything just like Kei's opinion about that sailor theory, and yeah if you can get the best outcome, why you didn't try to choose that haha, don't blame the situation and condition, blame yourself that you can't choose what you really want, and Kei can choose it so he's satisfied now.

It wasn't exactly the kind of ending I was hoping for, but this show really picked itself up around the halfway point. The story is obviously the show's strong point. Once you got used to the fact that all plot development comes from dialogues and once the situation's actually got interesting, this show was a pretty good watch. Lovely soundtrack as well.

7/10

I do get why people would not like this show though. It's pretty tough to get used to and the arc with Oka Eri and the Cat arc were pretty damn bad. I totally understand why people would drop the show around then (myself included back when it was airing). I'm glad I gave the show a second chance though.

But obviously, this story would never be possible if Sumire Souma doesn't have that feeling towards Kei.
