hmmm I agree with a lot of these disturbing animes but I'll say one that's kinda unexpected. . . Shakugan no Shana. I thought the concept of fading away and not being remembered at all was pretty disturbing. It's probably just me. I mean dying is one thing, but I would never want to be forgotten.

Not to worry you or anything, but probably about 50 years after you die there wont be anybody alive that remembers you enough to care that much. Unless of course you become famous for something or another, but the majority of people are only remembered by family until it becomes just another dead grandparent.

If Mnemosyne continues the way it was in the first episode, I'd say it'd be pretty disturbing.

Berserk - it's dark but I like it but it's also disturbing whenever I remember it.

I say Blood+ is another but it's milder compare to Berserk.

Shoot me dead, but I thought Fullmetal Alchemist was disturbing at some points. Dealing with afterlife, and religion and the military. If the characters weren't so amusing, it'd be pretty bad. Just remembering some beginning parts, about seeing what was supposed to be their mother, and then Nina. It was more disturbing because of the theme than anything.

Other than that, I don't remember anything that disturbed me.

Yeah Lily i have to agree on that. Especially the whole scene where Al looses his body and Ed looses his arm and leg to create a weird mutant thing when they where trying to get their mother back was extremely disturbing. And the genocide in scars country...and whole character of Gluttony(always trying to or actually eating people...)

I dunno, the Berserk ending was weird as hell, but the School Days ending was..."wow". Mnemosyne's piercing scene literally made me look at it and be like "WOW, OUCH." But I can't decide which is worse, lol. I'll just go with School Days because it was...very...ouchie. xD

I'd have to say Shigurui gets my vote for most disturbing - some of the imagry in that is just wrong. Maybe Narutaru too, if only for the last couple of episodes... the test tube! Argh!!

I would also agre that elfen lied was slightly disturbing... every 5 minutes or so, and a severed arm would come flying off... lol, but also School days was sort of disturbing at the end... even though you don't really see what happens.. but my imagination kinda disturbs me...

I think the most disturbing one I've seen is Jigoku Shoujo (both seasons), it doesn't have a lot of violence or blood but some of the situations make you think about what would you have done if you were in that situation, and how it's very difficult for people to forgive and forget.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni was definatly disturbing...having an adorable loli jab a knife into her head is pretty messed up.

Most disturbing while trying not to be - Midori no Hibi/Midori Days. So freakin creepy. It's so obviously a setup for an ecchi or hentai, but they made it a shoujo. Just watching a few seconds of it made me feel like a totally dumbass/want to facepalm. Although it is funny when she drags him around (but it looks like he's from The Grudge or something).

Haha, I have a soft spot for Midori no Hibi (only read the manga, though). It had a lot of potential to be disturbing, but it never went there, thankfully. Turned out to be quite a charming little series, in fact.

I suppose Boogiepop Phantom fits the bill (the few episodes I saw). More of a confusing "what the hell?" kind of disturbing, not to mention the whole creepy vibe. I didn't understand what was going, but it was interesting. Might watch the whole thing one of these days.

I make an effort to avoid the truly disturbing, or at least the ultra-violent. Never understood a lot of anime fans' (or anyone else, for that matter, not to single out one group) fascination with gore.

Higurashi wasn't that disturbing for me, don't get me wrong its an amazing anime (my favorite is the second arc by far). What was more disturbing was Elfen Leid, maybe it was because I didn't know about anime much then so the shock factor was alot higher.
