Ahh seeing Ymir's backstory animated is so great. Only surprising part is how many spoilers were in this episode. A lot of things were shown with her backstory but I'm just glad it's animated. I don't really mind how early it is, if I'm honest.
But since I always see people confused on Ymir's backstory, just in case, brief explanation:

Some of the anime-only people here are coming up with clever as hell theories and crap that I wouldn't of been able to figure out, honestly. Also, Eren freaking hitting Reiner with his hand stumps was freaking hilarious. I had to pause the episode because I was laughing too hard.

I wouldn't call it spoil. They are just rearranging some things (and clever anime watchers might work it out anyway). Might actually make for a smoother and more easily understandable transition down the line.

Nope. They made Ymir's backstory as subtle as possible, so we have nothing to worry about, but I was so fucking scared they're gonna reveal the..
. This fucking anime will be the death of me!

I still hav loads of questions, but how many episodes are left, will they tell me why
Ymir looks so young for someone at over 60, did she say that or did I miss hear, And
wat was that all about Eren being some kind of chosen one r something.

Please tell me what u think of any of these or anyone got a question about it,
Iv watched it so many times now, oh wat about Ymir being cut then thrown of
the wall, wer they the people of that city thrown titans out, did it happen to

They revealed WAAAAAY to much, that was stupid.

Not much. They made it as subtle as possible, they didn't even emphasize where the fuck did Ymir come from really (it's still a question mark), though I kinda agree with you that that was stupid since it should be in season 3 or season 4. Fuck! My heart was pounding so hard for I thought they're gonna reveal fucking EVERYTHING! Shit.

How is it ruined if they can't even understand it now? You're contradicting yourself.

You have to be blind not to see it. You literally see other people in an uniform with guns and people falling down and "exploding" (what can it be????) You also can't call it tease.
And yet you literally responded to someone who was "blind" enough not to see it, since you pretty much told them that they didn't understand. All the transformations reveal is something we already knew from what happened to Connie's hometown: people can turn into titans. Big deal.
I'm calling you out because I think you're making mountains out of molehills because you already know everything as a manga reader and your hindsight clouds your judgement of this episode. I mean, just look at the reactions to the episode in this thread alone and see how many animeonlies were legit confused by the flashback as opposed to thinking it gave them answers. If anything you guys will be the ones ending up spoiling the animeonlies further by making all kinds of innuendos and "giving them advice" instead of letting them draw their own conclusions.

The military that arrested them and threw them off a wall could've been from inside the Walls, for all we know. The uniforms might've just been different because it happened 60 years ago. We can't be sure the governement isn't behind this.

No, that has to have happened in her hometown, which is outside the walls. She became a Titan, wandered to the walls, ate Marcel, and became a human again.
Not really, we know her hometown was raided by the military but we have no idea where the military in question comes from, and we don't know where the executions took place, as the show took good care of not showing us any indication regarding the location of the transformations. All we know is that the walls they were pushed from lead to the territory outside of the Walls.

Ymir's back story is very depressing. I did a double take when she said that she's been outside the walls for 60 years though.

As a young girl, she was chosen to be a ruler for a small occult, but at least gave her a place where she could eat and sleep peacefully.

But the police arrived and ended that happiness for her. What surprised me was what the police did to her and the other prisoners though. Injecting them with liquid that I believe turns them into titans before kicking them off the walls.

Her back story has given me plenty of questions to ask though, namely the biggest one was what were those policeman doing in producing titans? Was is it combat other titans back then?

The whole episode itself has left me begging for more answers to these questions. =P

Only two episodes left now. I wish that they make season three soon. =)

Animation of the "flying" characters talking in the forest was awful. A comical moment. It remembered me this old movies with actors in a car and a bad background movie behind to make believe the car is moving.

I got tired of Eren's yelling. This story fits definitely better the manga format, at least my ears aren't bleeding.

A delight : seeing some mangareader retards spoiling part of the story without even realizing it. Amazing how stupid some can be. What an entertainment!
The good thing is that apparently many anime-only viewers don't read all the comments on MAL so they aren't spoiled despite the retards. That's the wisest strategy for you.

To me it was a bluff (they picked her (homeless girl) of the street). They need new "goddess" so the belivers will still make donations and other stuff to the cult.

Really, really can't blame Eren for wanting to kill Reiner. '-'

Reiner isn't serious about Christa, I already suspected that. He said something like: "Yeeah, Christa is cute and all, but that's not it. She has an important origin etc..." I even don't know "what Reiner" thinks that way, you know.

My favorite scene was Ymir's flashback. Was waiting for it for a longer time.
But pairings like this are kinda problematic. She sees herself in Christa and I think you should appreciate another person for their own personality, not for your own projection.
Anyway, I love them tho. XD

OT: Tho I'm little bit pissed about people, who Ymir and Mikasa Yanderes. I heard / read this a few times. Of course, you want protect the one you love and see them again... and of course love makes you a little bit crazy and also irrational.
That's just human nature and not a Yandere. They are not that girl from Mirai Nikki lol.
People are so quick to sort characters and relationships in a specific stereotype, who are way more complex than that IMO.

They're giving away way too much, it's absolutely ludicrous
Good thing I already read the manga, they're absolutely mind fucking anime onlies.
You can pretty much nail down the future plot as an anime only from this episode alone if you connect the dots and theorize correctly.
Even Reiner and Bert's conversation in the beginning plays into that.
WyNdZ said:
Why did they show Ymir's past? I wonder if this is a sign that they intend to adapt the full manga otherwise there's no point in showing this. Is there?

Of course they will, SNK is a golden cow.
Other franchises get anime sequels for less than what SNK has accomplished, it's huge.

If we continue with the 12 episode a season format, the seasons would probably go up to season 5, because I think the manga is in its final arc, but I don't know how long it will be. So possible three more seasons after this, so 73 episodes in total.

Damn what an episode.. from all the new stuff we got the one that caught my attention the most is Ymir's town location, we know that it's outside the main walls so everything that happens in her flashback is outside the walls which means that the part where she's thrown of a wall it's not from the walls we know but some others.. which possibly means there are other places surrounded by walls around the world?
Ahh I need answers, I can't believe there's only 2 more episodes left..

Honestly, this was a stunning episode and I might have cried.

We finally get Ymir's backstory, and, um, did she say she'd been wandering around for 60 YEARS?!
My god, how old is she?!! O_O

I'm guessing it has to do with the fact that she was forced to roam about a wasteland in her titan form. Does that mean when Titan-shifters eat people it helps them turn back into humans...or was that just because she was injected (?) with something that made her turn into one so she had no control over it for a while?
Curious as to why those military dudes were turning people into Titans...maybe it's a war tactic or something :/

Her backstory was pretty tragic, starting with her living in the slums and then being taken away by some shady cultists who decided to pretend she was a "Queen". They're probably just grasping at straws, but so was Ymir and then the cycle of deceiving and disillusion started.

Now her actions towards Christa make complete sense...she was trying to push her out of living a lie just like she did because in the end, her self-sacrifice helped no one.
So I can't fault her for her to be out for herself- to her, it doesn't matter who she deceives so long as she doesn't deceive herself. Tbh Ymir and Christa are easily the best developed characters in AoT.

Pretty sure she just hid Christa in her mouth but everyone's gonna think she killed her.

Also that scene where Ymir is under the stars and then that OST (like a "Call Your Name" Pt. 2) kicks in is freakin' beautiful ;-;

EDIT: Annie x Bertholdt confirmed lol

This is what I think so far:

There are two outside entities that we just learned of. The mysterious city and the secret cult.
Within the kingdom, we have the monarchy and the church cult.

Eren's dad. He travels a lot and has a serum. Anne's dad lives in the woods and has the serum.

The church cult knew about the walls and act like they want to be forgiven from their past sins.

The new city cult, IMO, was nothing more than a side story to set up how fucked up Ymir is and why......or is it?

I was trying to avoid doing this cause I was called Essay-kun on the KAcomment section....but here goes:

Adding season one and what's been shown in season two, I can gather this much:

A long time ago City A developed a serum. This serum has the ability to turn regular humans into large, physically altered creatures called Titans. At some point in the history of this city, society agreed that being turned into a Titan would be a form of horrific punishment as you would be one for eternity.

Ymir, an orphan girl, was taken into some underground cult. They adopted her as a new leader. Some false figure with "royal blood". Eventually, guards showed up, instantly cast judgment on them and sentenced them to become Titans and roam the lands forever. You could clearly see that everyone knew this punishment as eternal damnation based on their reactions and those publicly stoning them.

But why create a false king? And what of the guards? That means that City A is actually the capital city of some royal land. They have a monarchy. A king that has gone missing. By being this false king, they claim to be something that the city views as heresy and are punished by a fate worse than death.

60 yrs later we see that Ymir is back to human form after eating another titan. More on that later.

Eren's dad is some sort of doctor or something. He travels a lot and has the serum. That means that he is from the real capital city. What he has to do with that is still a mystery but let's be clear about this. In order for his dad to be from that city, live in that new kingdom, and have the serum, he'd have to be over 100 yrs old. AKA, Eren's dad is also a Titan. That or he recently came to the Kingdom as some sort of spy, fell in love and now switched sides. However, Eren and Mikasa could also be orphans and the family was a lie to begin with.

The kingdom itself, and all its walls is the real secret. Why does everyone want to keep the secret of the walls hidden? Why do these new ppl want to destroy it? What happened to the old kingdom where saying you have the blood of the missing or dead royal family be viewed as heresy?

I think the King was or, someone from the royal family, cast off as a titan. They eventually turned back into human form and managed to gather others that turned back. They, after many many years started to create the new kingdom. Something happened, ppl were tricked and the walls were made. That means that 100 yrs ago, a group of people. including who ever they think is the royal bloodline, managed to get "volunteers" to become the wall and never speak of it again. That also means that many ppl within the city are also titans.

So, the real royal bloodline is out to destroy this false one and keep it from the ppls view. Cause of the old kingdoms ppl found out that these punished could turn back into humans, all hell would break loose. They did this by providing a false story to sheep followers and we have the soldiers. OR, the soldiers are after the kingdom that had secretly held the missing lineage of royal blood and thinks this new kingdom was hiding her the entire time.

Lastly, the locations as a whole. The old kingdom is the real kingdom. The new kingdom is in the middle of nowhere and that land is used as nothing more than an endless prison for those who where turned. This would explain why the new kingdom is in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by titans.

We also take into account the Titans. There are two types. Mindless and shifters. Mindless roam forever as that, mindless. Shifters tend to become one once they eat another shifter. Case in point, Ymir, Anne, Eren, and the other two. We see that they stay that way until they eat another shifter.

But when did shifters come about? And when did Eren eat another shifter? Why does each have a special appearance and ability yet Eren doesn't? Did scientists eventually realize the serum could be manipulated and create super soldiers? Or is it a hit and miss thing? Did Eren's dad stumble upon something, share it with Ann'es dad and....

All I know is that a good portion of the secrets lay waiting in the basement. I'm sure it's the history of the two kingdoms, where the serum came from and why things are happening. The other secret is going to be the blonde chick and her royal bloodline.

Let's not forget that the ending credits tells the story and one can decypher it to an extent.

Titans eat only humans. In the first season they specifically mentioned that Titans do not target any lifeform other than humans. Which is why the Vice Captain in the second episode was shocked to see Ape Titan targetting his horse.

Or maybe Christa is another shifter but she hasn't discovered her power yet?

Why Christa is important, is because Hange had interrogated the Church guy (whom she threatened to dangle off the wall) and he name-dropped Christa's name. Add in this episode and you can start having your own hypotheses.

I know, that's why I said "important to everyone". There's been a few other things; we've found out her real name and that she's from a noble family (or at least adopted into it, kind of like Ymir's own story). But it's still a bit weird; either Reinhard's group is working for the wall priests (which seems unlikely because it looks like they came in from outside, which is where they encountered titan-Ymir, and because it doesn't make sense for the wall priests to want the walls broken, even if it was in one of the satellite towns that could have easily been abandoned... which is suspicious in itself), or there's another group that wants her for some different reason, perhaps as leverage for something.
