Dude i see you in every discussion and the word that you say the most is "dropped" xd

Some people (like me) tend to find themselves more willing to comment about stuff they don't like rather than stuff they like - it's just a matter of personality. For example, I'm really liking Little Witch Academia, Sakura Quest, and Re:Creators among currently airing shows, but I have hardly posted on forums if at all (even if I read conversations etc.).

To you, it might be "being negative". To me, though, it's just "voicing my issues". If I've liked something, well, fine. I'm not coming here to tell you that a certain scene made me cry because, frankly, it's something private and sensitive to me. But if something disappointed me, I feel the need to say it out aloud.

I only dropped 12 anime this season
the only bear...able thing in this anime is the opening theme, yet it already feels generic 3-4 times listening to it
12 episode, boring characters, plot won't get anywhere since.. 12 episode. and it's already wasting 1 full episode with nothingness and bland sex jokes. worthless.
only 10 watchable anime this season, not too shabby I guess

sorry but lot of anime considered Masterpieces does have aswell "Sexualized characters" and sex jokes and I didn't see anyone complaining about it, i mean, is not like the whole anime will consist of it, this episode was more of a "rest" for the characters, is okay to have fun once in a while

The point is how you're having fun. I don't mind having comedy scenes in such a show - indeed, I believe having both comedy and drama scenes in such stories is absolutely required. But the point is, I really hoped the source of comedy would not have been, say, little blond kid shouting some crap like "This is impure!" at Zero sleeping atop Mercenary... or Mercenary getting flustered at Zero's antics.

On a similar vein, this episode rly ruined Mercenary's image for me. From the first two episodes, I had the hope that, for once, we'd have a different sort of MC from standard anime stories. Which basically meant two things:
1) An MC which is not necessarily nice but also has a pragmatic or blunt side, which does not reduce simply to have a blunt personality;
2) An MC who does not care about the "high-school-esque" crap we're used to in other shows, from fantasy shows like Grimgar to the SoL like Masamune-Kun no Revenge or Seiren
But this episode shot down both hopes hard. I was severely disappointed from the beginning of ep. 3, when he took Zero on her shoulder... just because? And as the episode went on, he kept acting less like a toughened mercenary and more like a flustered tsundere who pretends to be cold but actually has the heart of a middle-high schooler.

I'm not saying this show had to be like I imagined it. I'm just saying that I hoped it would've been different in these respects. In particular, I have been longing for a long time to see (in recent times, at least) a male MC who acts in a more mature or interesting way than a generic high-schooler. I was hoping Grimoire of Zero could be that different thing.

Mercenary isn't really tough, he tries to act tough.
Taking Zero on his shoulder is maybe one of the first hint that he likes her despite what he says.
Not throwing Zero away when they woke up at the end of the episode is another hint that he might not keep on with his middle-high schooler attitude, if you compare that to episode 1, it's a progress and for me a good surprise.

I understand your issues somehow, I might have the sames, but I still think he's not that bad yet and even think he can become better, more like "going with the flow" for instance and more at ease with Zero's behavior and teasing. We'll see. I won't put my hopes too high though, I'll admit.

Is there any point in watching further? None of these episodic stories seem to be going anywhere. There's no depth or layers to them.
"Humans who weren't actually witches were burned at stakes", seriously? An entire ep to deliver info that almost everyone knows?
Not helping is the drained-out colors and insanely boring fight sequences.
I'm considering dropping this.

This episode was pretty average. The story was meh. But the interaction between the 3 is always nice to watch. It is really what I watch this series for. It also have that nice adventure vibe so always a plus.

But honestly, they better get the story going because this isn't doing too well IMO. Though you do notice the character development. Mercenary is resisting less when zero sleeps on him. He also carried her at the bridge. Not just that, he was also being considerate to Albus when he was asleep.
Albus no longer says he hates him, more or less as a joke at this point. And they both learned more about the true nature of witches and beastfallen-not all that bad of a people contrary to rumors. For all intent and purposes, the quick action and lack of character introduction(including names) initially made me think it was plot driven.
But this is rather opposite since the plot isn't going very far but the characters do show some change. It is notable since the things we learned for the most part is rather obvious. But not so much to the characters since(excluding zero) they all believed in some misplaced stereotypes.
So as the viewer, our opinion haven;t changed much throughout. The characters viewpoints have shifted. While I agree the plot shouldn't be neglected, a lot of the complaints simply don't see the real focus.

And naked Zero is best Zero(nah jk)
She's not the type that is best naked ;)
It is up to the imagination lol. But I wouldn't mind being all furry and having her sleep on top of me :P

Well, like you said, the last 2 episodes were pretty much episodic stories. This last one focused on things that you don't seem to care much for, such as character banter with a certain degree of world building, while you seem to be looking for an overarching plot with steady progression. Given the fact that it's only 12 episodes long... yeah, that should be enough to answer your question.

(let alone the fact that you don't like the action)

Zero reminds me of Holo in a lot of ways, especially with the drinking. I was hoping this show was gonna be an action spice and wolf. But the blonde character is taking focus away from the duo.

I think I've got your point But...

You have to take in consideration that he has 2 witches walking with him, in a city were they despise witches, would be bad to bring bad impressions on him, also he stated that other "beastfallens" acts bad and ruins his reputation as a Beastman, I think he had no choice but act "friendly" (just exactly at what happened on last episode, he brought attention and he got trashed away from town

as some people said above, its more like a filler, I don't think that he will act the same during the rest of the series (that would be really monotone) and not really enough to drop it, but well, if that's your will, who am I to stop you?

You should stop taking the "filler" nature of the episode as an excuse. I could understand if I said, say, "there is no action". But when my criticism (which is the same as a few others, from what I can read on this thread) is "the comedy is bad and mostly about sex jokes", telling me that this is a filler is not a good answer. Heck, if anything, fillers are the sort of episodes where the anime should show us best how it conveys comedy or light-hearted situations, but if what we get instead is... this... then how is this show exactly any different from many other average light novel shows for teenagers, out there? It would be ridiculous to expect, say, a show like this (or like Grimgar, or many others) to go down this route for a few eps and then change its kind of comedy completely down the road.

For a comparison, check Little Witch Academia. The show provides plenty of filler material between the action and plot-heavy episodes. But the flavour of comedy (i.e. the ways they make us laugh) is the same in the filler episodes as in the others. In fact, I don't see why you'd expect anything different, really.

I rarely find myself in agreement with @GangsterCat and his (sorry if it's "her"? I have no idea) comments, but this time he really hit the nail on the head. This was light novel material in the most pejorative sense.

I see, well not filler then

well there are different settings of comedy. then this setting wasn't for you. I do understand that sex jokes aren't great overall (I do not like when they become a bit repetitive, specially when they are full cringe like Clockwork planet) For me, i hope that it will not depend on sex jokes in the future, I can say, at least, that the Kid is a bit annoying sometimes acting like that ( I even survived Drifters bad jokes lol)

I think I have been in Agreement with GangsterCat in the past, not really sure, but nowadays I just can't.

For me, Judging the whole anime by the comedy setting from 1 episode (in this case the 3rd one) for the rest of the anime is assuming much, I hope that it doesn't go that way, or at least, that the comedy won't depend much on sex jokes

Yeah, Albus aside, this has been pretty similar to Spice and Wolf. There's a lot of character interaction and sexual tension between the duo. In fact, I like this duo even better so far.

(I was never a big fan of Spice and Wolf, but Holo is pretty awesome, no doubt about it)

that can be, if he stood with his "I hate every single witch" he couldn't bear to do the things he does with her, In my eyes, he is trying to see her not only as a Witch, but as something else

I find that pretty subjective in this case. Of course, jokes can be plain bad sometimes. But if anything, I'd love to see more of sex jokes and sexual tension in this anime. I've found them really amusing so far.

Nice tease in the end, so it seems she really didn't lie when she told him she can turn him back into human.
I only cringe a bit at her attituted, surely someone who wrote famous grimoire had to know more thing about how the world works than she does. One has to take the main plotline with pinch of salt here.

Can say I like the relation they both have towards each other though. She looks young but she acts old, like an adult that's a plus too. But the boy is as useless and annoying I would certainly do without him anytime.

Also, how to get sober in 3 seconds, doubt there was any magic in it. And I'm not entirely sure leaving their advisory barechested was a good thing when he knows she's a witch. Surely he would be able to tell someone as revenge after he wakes up, right? They literally made sure they would need to leave the city in hurry.

I tend to have much higher expectations than other viewers. I prefer my anime with the whole package: loads of plot AND character development AND themes, ala Fate/Zero and Durarara. But someone pointed out the obvious slow progressive development of the characters, and I'm a HUGE sucker for Medieval-witch-crazed eras, so...I'll probably continue.

Zero changed her outfit, so cute :3

It's a shame that this anime will only get 12 eps :/ And it's hard to get a LN translated...f*** :( I think i will have to wait for a manga.

All I can wish you is that you turn out to be right and the show reveals to be different from what's proved to be in this episode, in regards to comedy and other social issues. But given what other LN adaptations showed us in the recent past, I personally won't hold my breath.

EDIT: Also, @Ysad, I'd be REALLY surprised if, despite what that last scene showed us, Mercenary didn't revert to his previous embarassed attitude towards Zero. That's just how it seems to work in such shows.

So many sexual innuendos in this episode...
And how did that dog guy's face color turn to grey while he challenged for a duel, lol? Also the body may have reverted to the human form but his face stayed the same when Zero changed his appearance through her powers...

I almost died laughing when Zero said they were sex slaves lol and the part where she strips down naked in the shop was funny too! I really enjoy this anime and I hope the main story starts to pick up here in the next few episodes with more action and adventure!

This show is the perfect example of a show I wish I could like, y'know. I like this Medieval set-up with a world at war between kingdoms and witches, I like the class persecution angle the beastfallen bring into the story, I like main character's design and personality, I like this magic system where witches put rituals' power into books... But goddamnit, so many things about Grimoire of Zero turn me off!

Occasionally (but more often than I can tolerate), something stupid will happen- for example, that "sex slaves" gag at the city gates. Why hadn't the three of them discussed their plan for getting into the city beforehand? Why did this end up having to be a last-minute bumbling affair? This isn't the only dumb thing that's happened in the show and taken me out of it, but this is the one that made me completely disconnect with this episode.

And the animation is so embarrassingly amateur! White Fox is the same studio that made Steins;Gate and Katanagatari for God's sake, where are the kinetic action set pieces and the well-shot scenes that I know this studio can deliver? Goddamnit, White Fox just made Re:Zero, they should be well versed now on how to make a good-looking fantasy show! But no, character animations here are sorely lacking and every time Grimoire of Zero tries to show some action, it ends up being stiff and unappealing. I could get a similar level of animation fluidity by flipping through a manga.

Oh, and we're 3 episodes in and our characters still feel very shallow. I could understand if there was a lot of worldbuilding that had to be done, but... honestly, everything we've discovered so far could have been told in half the time.

So the characters are uncompelling, the animation is quite poor and some scenes seem designed to break my immersion... I hope someone will tell me if this gets good later, but for now I'll just go back to watching the other 19 shows I've chosen to follow this season.

Dude i see you in every discussion and the word that you say the most is "dropped" xd

That is your opinion.
And I think like the other user in all the discussions you just say dropped.

it's fine to give a note to an anime that has only seen 3 episodes :)

The story goes well, albeit slowly, so there are no misunderstandings. Funny narrative and at the same time instructive. Characters that are becoming more and more loved. The drawings and the tables at the beginning of the episode, are discrete as quality. Even animations are not bad as quality.

the characters and their interactions are probably the best points of this show, and im interested in the world building as well. but zero doing that kotori photobomb was hilarious imo

Really loved this episode. I'm slowly falling in love with the girl lol. She is just too damn cute and sweet at the same time.

Perfect waifu material.

And the to put notes of 1,2,3 to animes that you have dropped that you have not even seen the half. You can not put a note to a series that you have not seen integer :)

So many sexual innuendos in this episode...
Also the body may have reverted to the human form but his face stayed the same when Zero changed his appearance through her powers...

I don't think she changed his appearance.

I think she just shaved his fur off.

You mean like as a punishment for losing the duel? I see, that makes sense.

Pretty good episode.

Very good exchange rate the have for those gems or they are just that precious.

Lol Mercenary is always getting embarrassed by Zero's shameless behavior, sex slaves to being with then the clothes shop.

I love how he just threw her into the changing room.

It was nice of them to free those slaves.

I thought Zero was going to do something evil because of that smile, but it ended up she just wanted to sleep on Mercenary like usual.

I think I'm like the only one who likes Albus being part of the group. Also, stop asking if he's a "trap" (God, I fucking hate that transphobic word)... If he says he's not a girl and that he's a boy, take his word and shut the fuck up about it.

That aside, this anime is cute af & definitely reminds me of Spice & Wolf.

The clothing shop owner was such a lol pervert, he can now die in piece xD Zero really is a fascinating character. Glad with knowing more about beastfallen. I taught that dog I mean fox was kinda strong but Youhei just slammed him to the boxes.

I just hope its not gonna be always episodic, I need some cliffhangers... So far really enjoying the show.

Usually I don't like loli mc, but this is an exception. Zero is really adorable and lovable XD.
Liked this episode, Yohei is badass af and I like the adventure so far. This is a really adventure anime, MAL should add Adventure genre to this anime.
