This could have been a great political war drama, but the Izetta parts just feel so tacked on, even though she's the main character. The show would be much better without Izetta lol.

I agree with that... the whole realism that the show is trying to build up is destroyed by Izeta's very being and it's only her that is out of place in this show.

I really liked the first episode before she showed up and in this episode the good parts remain being very good but a magic girl really messes up things. It doesn't seem like she is overpowered to destroy a whole army by herself but defeating 4 airplanes without getting a single wound is already broken enough and if this show turns into a show where magic powers sway the tides of every battle then it will truly be a let down. Sadly based on opening, this seems to be the case. But oh well, this anime is really well made and there are but few shows in this season worth watching so I will continue to give it the chance.

I believe Izetta won't leave her "magical" Rifle with no particular reason. She'll have to retrieve back her Rifle.
That flashback of them, are so cute.

I don't think that's specifically her rifle? Isn't it just one she picked up from the plane and then made magical? Can't really remember the specifics of the previous episode, so I could be wrong.
Decent episode, love the music.
Even so, that Rifle is perfectly fit for her. Just like what's shown on the Cover. Like a witch and their broom.

said it last week she'll either make or break this show still to early to judge, but just giving us a valkyria chronicles type of anime is a pro in it's self if all else fails the OST and bunbun is keeping me on board

So we have some focus on Izetta here. She first helps out the princess in escaping from those German fighter jets. Her magic powers are pretty cool, shooting out spikes or whatever from her blood. The fortress they wanted to escape to had already fallen but they run into the defeated army and that saves Finè. Izetta doesn't think of herself as being worthy of calling herself Finè's friend because Finè saved her life but she hasn't done anything so extravagant. The event where Finè saved Izetta was probably that Izetta was being targeted by the villagers because she was a witch and Finè saved her. People think that witches are evil and have sold their souls to the devil whereas Finè thinks that they're not like that at all. Finè and Izetta became close friends and Finè likes Izetta even more because Izetta doesn't care about Finè's rank and all. And because she doesn't want to involve her friend into all this shit, Finè tells Izetta to run away. But Izetta wants to fight with Finè and for that she'll have to go retrieve her rifle.

Even though using her powers like she did was taboo, Izetta still wants to be with Finè and help her. And the Germans have now come to know that the girl in the coffin actually is a witch and will cause them troubles on many fronts if she is used. And they will try to eliminate her from the war I think.

Things are getting somewhat interesting here. The OP was good and I don't think it was really necessary to show a naked Izetta in the opening sequence (but that ass though). Anyway, this is possibly going to be some good stuff so I guess it'll stay.

Nice episode overall ! The OST was really good, OP and ED too that's really a good point for this show.

Characters are likeable, Fine is still my favorite and her flashback with Izetta was really cute, I like their chemistery. The story seems a bit generic as others already said, but for the moment I don't mind because it's enjoyable

3/5. This episode was a bit weaker than the previous episode. Didn't like the background story and the talking. I want more action and politics. Hopefully it will get better next episode. Won't drop this since it is original work and only 1 cour and not many other good stuff this season - but I hope it can manage to avoid getting too boring.

Original work + 1 cour gives a bit hope that they can make something decent with a good/okay final episode.

Liked that soldier guy (Obermeyer) and the enemy guy of course is interesting. The fight in the air also was cool. And nice to see the normal allied and defeated soldiers (makes it look like a real war if they also show them and not only witch pwning enemies).

I would say that skin, I found much more convincing this episode, compared to the previous one. The narrative does not shine for originality, but was able to give some useful information to understand something about the characters. Drawings and animations in the standard, ditto for the sets. Catchy soundtrack.

The reason they're not using ACTUAL country names is so that they can create a pseudo-history.

I found the flashbacks a little cliche and by-the-books; for instance, the scene where the dog makes a noise, the girls turn to each other, then both laugh - I've probably seen a variant on that scene >=10 times. But it's not that big an issue for me. Otherwise, pretty cool fight scene at the beginning (how her magic works - reminded me a certain anime...)

Also, the OP suggests that the flying gun will be a permanent feature - cool.coolcoolcool

The music in this series is crazy good. And from what I can gather this is only the composers second series with her first being a preschooler program. I love the sweeping orchestral. The animation was nothing to snuff at either. Really cool episode can't wait for more. This is pretty much become my must watch for the season.

this series has really impressed so far. The animation in particular has been really good. Considering this is from an obscure studio that hasn't put anything else out like this i'm impressed.

Sound track is very good and really enjoyed the dogfight. Can't wait to see where this goes, it's certainly a bright spot in an otherwise poor season.

Haha, think I've been playing a bit too much War Thunder when I'm the most bothered about how they're flying the BF 109. You don't dogfight with them, climb and dive is the tactic you want as the German planes weren't very good at turning, going over 400km/h wouldn't have been a problem either >.<

After a somewhat promising first episode, there were several discouraging signs here that this isn't going to be any good:

-ridiculously generic and on-the-nose dialogue
-black-vs-white story with protagonists who have no perceivable character flaws
-excessive flashbacks conveying messages that could have been done in a third of the time

I see a show that seems to think its audience is stupid and feels the need to explain all the characters' motivations/feelings to us. I feel no reason to care about anyone in this story so far, and I doubt I will at this rate.

Yes, Bf109 were energy fighters not turn fighters. The pilots also wasted their ammo on shots that would miss.
400km/h wouldn't of been a major issue though the latest Bf109 model was the E model and only 570km/h maximum speed. And with how they kind of wasted their speed initially with sharp turns, they will struggle.

Kind of yes. The flashback was really by-the-book too as someone else have said and cheesy. Didn't like it. I don't like Izetta's personality either, too dependent. The Princess is also made too nice. Not judgmental, admired by her men, willing to die for her country. That is too idealistic. It is simply not fitting for a military themed series where there are political background involved.
this also ties in with the black-white story telling which I hate when it comes to military themes. Combining these together you get the same type of dialogue.
Really don't like the characters due to this.

Other than the WW2 background, it is losing me here.

Yes I do agree it is generic. Nothing new. Following history a bit TOO much. This is a major problem since this is based off of a WW2 like scenario and hence should give some originality. However if it is a 'changing history' or what if type of story like Zipang, that would be fine. But this is not and should change it up a little or you just lack originality.
Another problem is that it is following the big nation invades small format with supernatural tossed in to even the odds. A bit too much like Valkyria chronicle's formula.

The two scenes that catch my attention so far was the train in ep1 and the dogfight. For action scene, it seems a bit slow paced, though the dogfight was better. The train one felt like a classic 80s or 90s style so it had a bit of charm. The dogfight was pretty decent and faster pace hence felt more exciting but not quite there. Accuracy wise, nothing was wrong with the Bf109, but rather proper usage is another question. I can only say the "captain" was the only one that sort of know what he was doing. Even then, wasn't particularly good or bad.

Good episode. I'm liking Izetta's power. Looks like she had to sacrifice some of her blood to generate some attacks which makes her less op. Although for all those blood splattered from her finger, there should be some deep gaping wounds. Oh well, can't wait to see how she will beat the nazis as opposed to russia/US lol.

Izetta personnality/behaviour looks like the big problem to me.

She's acting like a dog or like the perfectly cliche devoted maid. They're supposed to be friend, it doesn't look like it in the end. Hope she will mature a bit and won't forget she is a human being before being a servant.

Rest of the show is good, but after this 2nd episode I'm a bit more sceptical.

She doesn't think she's worthy of being called "friends" with Fine. She's got the princess set on a huge pedestal because of the time she was saved before, and because they haven't actually been together for quite some time, it seems.

I understood that :) I'm not very fond of self-pitying, self-loathing characters and if I could feel with someone indebted, it depends how you do it, how you show it on the screen, there are nuances. Here they depict a servant who is so focused on her princess that she doesn't see a mountain and almost crashed and she won't eat or sleep (come on!) until her godess, her owner, her "everything" wakes up. They overdid it in my opinion but that's just personal even though it seems already that I'm not alone thinking Izetta's characterization is the burden that might brought the show down.

The way I see it, this is room for character growth. Izetta is so "devoted" to Fine because she has self-esteem issues. Due to isolation and self-loathing, Izetta considers herself lower than dirt, and thinks Fine is a saint because she befriended and saved unworthy trash like her. I think Izetta will get a character arc in which she develops a greater sense of self-worth as she fights to save people, and will eventually get over her self-esteem issues.

If nothing else, she's more interesting that Fine, who doesn't have any discernible flaw that could give room for character growth.
