I don't even want to say that here, but I just don't get why this arc is supposed to be that exciting. I have been rather bored the last couple of episodes.
I seem to have outgrown Gintama unfortunately...
I mean everybody loves this, really I don't want to destroy your mood here and I will just believe it is great, but for me...really not.

I just don't care much for it anymore, was similar the whole season. Some comedy stuff was good but it never got me to the same enjoyment level as the very first season, ever.

Really I don't understand it myself! :-(

I don't really get any feelings from this either but the production values are best so far. And chances are this will forever be the best animated Gintama episode.

That wasn't actually his name, he was just making a spoilery joke (don't look it up). The green guy hasn't been named in the manga yet as far as I remember
Pretty much this. We got zero info on the guy. And the name you saw earlier is a spoiler for later on in the series.
guys, he is come from fake trailer gintama movie. he is not even canon. lOl.

The episode did an amazing job animating all the scenes from the manga and the voice acting was phenomenal. I loved the new visuals in the op even though they were reused scenes they pumped me up for the episode and made me like the song a lot more compared to last week visuals...

Looking forward to the next episode....it seems like it will rain again..

REALLY GOOD. And I mean it as one of the few who didn't get immersed at all in the previous episode. So this is quite an achievement.

It sounds crazy and absurd but this is the first time I have ever felt something for Takasugi. No, scratch that. This is actually the first time I have thought of him as a legit and worth character. And it delivered, really well.

My issues with Shouyou are still there, but the way this episode described what his figure meant for Gintoki and Takasugi (and poor forgotten Katsura) was very eloquent.

I wouldn't put it among the very best, but that only speaks highly of Gintama. The best episode of the arc, at least.

About Oboro... well, we will see him do something. So far he is like the blandest character ever to me. But then again, so was Takasugi before this episode, so hey who knows.

My eyes were watering throughout the entire episode. I've never felt this much emotion from an anime episode in it's entirety. Probably the best anime episode I've ever seen.

Gintoki.. Takasugi... I have no words

Please Takasugi don't be dead. I really want to see Gintoki and Takasugi fighting on the same side.

Though Gintoki was going to break one of his promises, so he kept the one he thought was best. I feel for both Gintoki and Takasugi. Takasugi didn't know about Gintoki's promise to Shoyo, but also couldn't understand Gintoki's choice. The one person they wanted to protect, the one thing that meant the world to them, was the one they chose to sacrifice in order to survive. Takasugi just had so much self hatred at his own weakness more than anything that caused the death of Shoyo. Gintoki understood Takasugi and wanted to save him, by allowing himself to become Takasugi's target so to speak, so that Takasugi would survive and have a meaning to continue living, after losing everything. Gintoki bore that crest, so long as he lives, Takasugi would live too. Gintoki understood that Takasugi was on a two way path of either self-destruction, or destruction of his alter ego, due to his character and hatred. Takasugi couldn't forgive himself, so he took out his hatred upon Gintoki and the world, he probably understood that Gintoki let himself be his target and took on the task. While Gintoki had suffered some mental scarring being the one who had to kill his teacher, Shoyo, but he continues to keep his promise to his teacher. The reason Gintoki has been able to keep going all this time. Takasugi was right in a sense that their paths (Gintoki, Katsura, and Takasugi himself) diverged from the start when they entered the school. They had different motivations. Their personalities at times seem straightforward yet also complex at other times, this shows they're just human beings.

Really great post!

This was such a painful episode. Takasugi and Gintoki's thoughts and the internal turmoil caused by the death of their teacher is such a complex topic. I could be interpreting this wrong, but I felt that it was implied that they both made each other their "goals" because they felt that the ones who killed Shouyou-sensei was both of them, due to their weakness. Which is why they fight against each other. But Takasugi also chose to seek revenge on the real people responsible for what led to Shouyou's death. After all, Takasugi understood Gintoki's pain and knew that the choice Gintoki made was to bear the cross. He knew that of all people, Gintoki would be the one who wanted to save Shouyou the most, yet he didn't. Instead he saved his two friends and Shouyou's disciples, because that's what Shoyou loved. It really sucks, this is the perfect scenario to exemplify why the survivors have it worse because of the suffering they go through after losing someone important to them.

I read the manga part of this so many times and I thought I adapted to the pain but HAHAHAHAHA NOPE! The voice acting and the visuals were like...the best I've ever seen in such a long time O_O

The anime did a really good job in bringing out emotion in these scenes like I feel like I've been completely stabbed through my entire body because I am in eternal pain TT_TT

Props to the voice actors, they did such a great job.

Dear lord, being Gintoki sure suck. He's a freaking walking Reaper. Cutting the head of the one you belove the most... That's some ISIS shit. Naraku faction is literally ISIS.

Seriously though, Takasugi has lost his way :(
He has been following his master ideal, to overthrow the shogunate, even though it was meaningless at the present time. He just ended up offering the whole country to his true nemesis. It sure suck to be Takasugi too :|

Gintama never cease to surprise me. I honestly didn't thought they would advance in the story. I thought they would find a way to troll us again. But I believe this is finally the time where we're at a crossroad. Pls, don't end Gintama :(

This episode was just the embodiment of sadness. There were many moments which I think the studio deserve an appreciation post for.

Gintoki's sad smile before executing Shouyou was very impactful, especially Takasugi's bloodcurdling scream afterwards. He was literally everything to them, he gave them so much to live for and to have that taken away from you right before your eyes is traumatizing.

Gintoki has all of my respect, like Katsura said, the one who should hate this world more than anyone else and want to destroy everything is him, yet he doesn't. He's strong enough to walk a different path.

He had to carry the burden of killing Shouyou and the guilt of being unable to protect his comrades and yet doesn't let it consume him like it did to Takasugi. I think that the Yorozuya are the ones that lifted him in that kind of sense, it gave Gintoki back some of the humanity and bonds that he lost which is so precious.

Though I do wish they could of incorporated the self-mocking smile Gintoki had while facing Takasugi - that moment in the manga was really powerful. But otherwise, can't wait for the FS Arc and Kamui/Kagura action!

Maybe this is the reason Gintoki won't use real sword. It must be too "heavy" or traumatizing for hi to use a real blade again(except for some enemies).

Yes this was also pretty good foreshadowing, just look at some of Gintoki's reactions in that arc. It was airing in the anime after I had just caught up with the manga and it was just painful with that knowledge.

Looking back on the entirety of Gintama, for me atleast, every smile or tear we shared with Gintoki just got a lot more meaningful after this revelation now. To think that this damn Gorilla planned and knew it all along...

Yep it was shown during the Shinigami arc he uses a Bokuto after the war. Maybe it's just me but that freaking wooden sword has deeper meaning to me now. Fans have been saying "why does he use a wooden sword?" "if only Gin used a real sword" etc.. Well maybe this ep could explain that lol.

This arc is probably the best arc in the whole gintama anime.
Especially this episode was top notch, Animation, Soundtrack, Voice Acting, everything was awesome.
The battle between Takasugi and Gin was simply intense, we rarely see such good fights in animes nowadays.
The moment Takasugi seeing Gin killing Shoyo-sensei and crying gave me goosebumps.
Who else thought about Berserk when Takasugi lost his eyesight and the last thing he sees is his beloved one dying ?

A question though, what was with the movie that was announced years ago of Gins past, it also showed Takasugi lost his eye (not by a thrown broken sword piece but was cutted by one of the crows ?)

This was probably the highest point the show has been at, the way they managed to flesh takasugi's character out in just this one episode is quite the achievement and the way it plays off expectations to deliver a genuinely surprising twist that really explains alot of motivations was really well handled. I dont want takausgi to die now but its not looking too well for him now, Ideally i'd want takasugi to somehow make it through this and the final fight of the series could be takasugi, gintoki, and katsura finally getting to kill that fucker oboro.

Gin-san cares a lot more for Shoyo's students than Takasugi realizes. I believe Gintoki loved Shoyo more than Takasugi did and beheading him was the most difficult thing he has ever done.

Apparently, Gin-san knows something about Shoyo that Takasugi doesn't and wanted to protect him, maybe beheading him was the choice that he knew even Shoyo would only approve of. If Gin-san killed Katsura and Takasugi, Shoyo would have never forgiven him. Shoyo gladly died for his students but Takasugi is too selfish to realize that, one more reason to hate him. It's so hard to feel sorry for him and Kamui. I like Kamui as a character, he's one of my faves but I have a hard time feeling sorry for him too.
