This is most likely Andes Chucky was based on: http://myanimelist.net/anime/4615/Yama_Nezumi_Rocky_Chuck

Unfortunately, haven't seen it. perhaps the only one I've never seen from that year's batch. Thanks for the info.

Sugie's walk off into the distance had such a good 'my work here is done' feel to it. Was nice to see him save the day and have everyone look up to him.

First half has been really nice so far. Each episode has grown on me and I'm looking forward to seeing what's going to happen now that Exodus is over and done with.

This was a great episode. I'm glad that they were able to complete Exodus in a timely fashion, and that they were able to keep the top-notch quality until the end. I wonder what they have in store for the the second half of the anime.

I'm glad to see Sugie get to shine this episode. I really like his character.

^ Very interesting!

Here is the completely different (and much shorter) opening for the English-language
adaptation that was licensed in North America way back in the early 1970s:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ3vh9TRPBk
It is notable in that there is not even the slightest hint that it came from Japan.

- - - - - - -

Seeing Aoi driving while singing along to the opening theme for "Andes Chucky"
was a major highlight of the episode:

It goes from 16:13 to 16:59. Let's hope for a long version on a music CD. There is no information about who
sung it or who wrote the lyrics and music in the closing credits, as far as I could see.

- - - - - - -

By the way, SHIROBAKO will not be broadcasted next week!
Episode 13 will be aired on Thursday, January 8th. It sounds
like the reason is because of special TV programming related
to the new year. Here is the official tweet:

They finished Exodus! This has been a long and complicated journey for everyone, so its nice to finally reach the payoff. If only they didn't cut off at the countdown! I'd like to have seen the reactions to the episode in its entirety.

I wonder where they are going to go from here? I imagine it will be about adapting the light novel they keep talking about. If that is the case, it will serve as an interesting foil to the first half which was about an original anime series. I'm curious how an adaption is different from an original series in the production process.

Also, completely realized that Ema is absolutely adorable! How did I just now see this?!

Its quite refreshing to see anime references everywhere. I'm not an anime expert but I think that if Shirobako's objective is to make a big homage to anime and its industry, I think its being quite successful so far. Dull scenes and direction apart, the overall work has been mature and consistent, even for the moe aesthetic.

Just for your reference about "Ozu" at episode 11.
It doesn't have something to do with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at all.

Ozu is a name of a late film director in Japan (1903-1963).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasujir%C5%8D_Ozu
He made a lot of movies about a relationship between a father, a daughter and a problem shadowing a family. That why a staff of Shirobako referred to his name.
His style is also well known that he ignores a basic filming rule named 180 degree rule.

I see. In Episode 11 at 20:45 / 24:40, they were saying:

"Yano lives alone with her father."
"Huh? What's with that Ozu setting?"

Thanks for explaining that.

I think I would find it difficult to understand a movie which did not obey the
180 degree rule. Interesting webpage, though.

A surprising number of Ozu's old movies are posted on YouTube. You can find
them by searching on YouTube for either:
(1) His English name: Yasujirō Ozu
or
(2) His Japanese name: 小津安二郎

By the way, many of 1960-1970's TV animation filmed in Japan had been exported world widely, but those days, they were planned to be localized for export in the first place so most of the viewers of theses anime outside of Japan didn't know they were made in Japan.

For more information, see also, World Masterpiece Theater
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Masterpiece_Theater.
I guess you'll be surprised to know how many shows you watched when you were a kid without knowing they came from Japan.

For instance, this is one of the most well know anime internationally and was dubbed to many European TV stations but most viewers those days didn't know it was made in Japan.

@htsuji: It's truly remarkable how these international adaptations completely strip off
any credits that would hint that the work was produced in Japan.

There are two blatant upskirt panty shots of Heidi at 1:56 and 3:11 which would
definitely have to be edited out for North American audiences. That is a strict taboo.

The only series that I recognized on that list was "Fables of the Green Forest". I have
sung along with the English version of their theme song many times.

The way Onoue (the pale white-haired guy with the phone in the beginning) was talking to NGE's director sounded like he sent Miyamori to him for something very different other than animation-related work.

I think he intended to tease her as a joke, but failed.

In Ep 11, he specifically name drops the guy he offers to introduce her to as "Kanno. Kanno Mitsuaki. The director of Neon Genesis Avangaldon"

The real life Anno on whom Kanno is based has a towering reputation not just as a brilliant director, but also as a rather volatile personality. I think Onoue expected Miyamori to be scared off at that point.

If you look at Miyamori, her reaction was one of shock (imagine if someone offers to introduce you to the real life Anno out of the blue!) And Nabe-P also cut in to ask Onoue not to tease her. Miyamori however... has balls of steel and accepts Onoue's offer!

Onoue's face after that says it all. It was a look that says "These young girls are daring/scary". He had to make the best of it by actually calling Kanno to tell him he had sent Miyamori to him.

The final clincher was the other guy's comment in Ep12 that "Musani's girls are sure strong". He felt that Miyamori (the Musani girl he just met) was strong precisely because she did not back off from meeting the scary Kanno.

Exactly. I'm sure they thought Miyamori was much more scary than Kanno and Onoue had no choice but to make a phone call to him to take full responsibility for his reckless joke.

Yes. It is a big hit in Japan, based on the numbers of preorders that are being
placed for the Blu-rays and the DVDs.

This is quantified in terms of "Amazon Stalker points", which are, as of just this
moment:

Vol 2 Jan 28 BD 5668 BDSE 337 DVD 355 DVDSE 73
Vol 3 Feb 25 BD 5706 ... ... .. ... ...
Vol 4 Mar 25 ... ... ... ... ...

By the way, Rederoin maintains a website which provides statistics for all series:
http://rederoin.motionsforum.com/

I really think it is a bit of a surprise that SHIROBAKO is doing so well in Japan.
After all, this series is very demanding to watch, given that there are so many
important characters and it is very technically realistic. I find it to be a really
complicated story. Besides that, it is closely focused on the specialized world
of anime production, including many real-life references to classic shows and
actual people. To that, add on mentions of the novels of Dostoevsky, a play by
Samuel Beckett and some 1950s black-and-white movies directed by Yasujirō
Ozu. Up to this point, there has been minimal laugh-out-loud comedy, swimsuit
fanservice, fighting scenes, dirty jokes, low-angle shots or Yuri subtext. So far,
we haven't even seen the obligatory beach episode. Haven't any of these people
ever heard of hot springs?

In summary, I can't see even a single reason why this show has been able to
break above 1000 Amazon Stalker points.

Andes Chucky neeeds a full version, some great osts in this episode.
Ghibli The Wind Rises reference (zero fighter).
Dat mahjong table slot looks dope.

Hundred horse air side tracking shot was amazing. Wonder why I never see this quality in real war animes.

Depends on what kind of audience you are. This show isn't meant to be complicated (that's what we could've seen so far) and I'm pretty sure it gets a lot more fun to watch if you can relate or identify everything they mention, which is a lot more easier for the japanese since its an anime about their own culture, basically. By the way, what is the demanding part to watch it? ("given that there are so many important characters and it is very technically realistic" - no, this isn't demanding if you've been following anime for some time)

"To that, add on mentions of the novels of Dostoevsky, a play by Samuel Beckett and some 1950s black-and-white movies directed by Yasujirō Ozu"

How does mentioning Dostoyevsky makes something complicated? Are they incarnating his works into the anime to the point we can't get it unless we know enough about him? If thats the case then I'm one of the many people lost in the show. Which Ozu films did the anime mentioned?

Surely, do you think common anime studios' coordinators can have a chance to see a person with an influential position enough to introduce someone like Kanno casually? And also can you expect there is a legendary genius and yet not very busy animator coincidentally working for the company?

Before I got started watching anime, the first thing that got my interest was
the OVA series "Animation Runner Kuromi" (アニメーション制作進行くろみちゃん ).
Although it is a much simpler story than Shirobako, it shows the world of anime
production back in 2001.

In OVA 2, the person in charge of the production desk ran short of animators.
Luckily, she got a list of four good animators from a more experienced person.
After phoning up these people, it ultimately turned out that none of them were
available, so she ended up facing disaster.

There are amazing low-profile artists around but rare irl. But Musani is fictional and in context of their position, they used to be very well known, and after the seven year slump (probably boingboing), now they're trying to get back with Exodus. It's a likely setting not all veterans were fired during the slump. The fact is PA Works did animate this and several other shots wonderfully, though as a show-in-a-show context.
For similar shots, Vanadis has many horse war scenes. Their CG is very stiff/barely passable, while the 2D versions are good on stills, but awkward in motion (sometimes worse than CG).
Perhaps I'm interested in good animal animation. Sanzoku no Musume has some of the better detail animation on animals. Horse trot & gallop weight shift feel organic, and ear twitches & neck turning seems natural. The fox family is amazing to watch even though none of the animals are main characters.

Okay, it sounds like you really do know something. So please let me ask you a
simple question. What about human walking? Obviously, every anime episode
has multiple scenes of people walking. However, I find very few example where
the motion is realistic. More often, their feet seem to be floating in space or
else sliding on the ground.

The best way to animate walking is to not show the body below the waist. Just
show the character's head bouncing up and down. Cheap and effective. Of
course, anybody who looks closely will realize that it is laziness to cut costs.

The job of the director is to decide where to spend money in order to tell the
story. Sometimes it could be very important to accurately depict the motion of
a horse in order to vividly tell a story. On the other hand, drawing 100 still
images of horses and panning up and down and zooming in and out for 10
seconds is way, way cheaper. Talented directors know when to spend big and
when to be a cheapskate.

A good rule of thumb is that a 25-minute anime episode only has about 5000
frames. 5000 frames is not many frames. See here:
http://www.crunchyroll.ca/anime-news/2011/10/30-1/how-much-does-one-episode-of-anime-cost-to-make

The classic error of a newbie director is that they will show us beautifully
realistic animation of something that adds nothing to the storytelling.

In Episode 12 of Shirobako, Tsutomu Mizushima made a strategic decisions to
make a huge investment in the Exodus scene with the stampede of horses. It
was breathtaking. Unforgettable. I have a very high opinion of Mizushima as a
director.

Another nice episode and another lesson that has a double meaning; one targeted to civil society and the world of Japanese animation.
But not only, because in this episode, comes into play also the issue of the generation gap, not so negligible factor.
Pleasant narration as usual and drawings which although a good level, I hope to improve in versions BD. Is it just me to have thought, or are shown in the final of the characters that were never far not appeared?

Sweet episode! Really liked how intense this was even for a daily life series!
