Since you read the novel, what did you think of it?

I am all fine with it. Their world is completely changed and different from our present world. Moral standards can change. And in our history we have had cultures where polygamy or incest is considered ok. Besides there is a valid and powerful rationale behind such change in opinion about sex. I just think that the anime should stick to the thoroughness of this concept in the novel and not trying to insert the present standard into the story world.
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

I did not see anything even. Well could be good thing for the gore instead and blood being shown full blown. That itself would be better than showing the sex IMO.
Judging from these comments, and spoiler in the other thread, I assume that Saki and the other dude did have sex in the novel - in full view of that pervy mole rat thing I might add. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since they're around 10 or 11. Still, is it me or do they look a little older than in previous episodes - especially Saki?
I see perhaps it will be recounted as a mere flashback.

Well still a good surprise considering all the saturation of sex in other series.

Doubt it. May be only as the beginning those two developing feeling for each other.

I'm all for accuracy when it comes to anime. I really don't like it when my anime strays from the source material, though in this case I don't think that they had much of a choice since it would've turned into hentai.

I too would like to see that but unfortunately studios have to deal with modern censors. It's the world we live in.

Like it or not, the style of direction, animation, and art isn't an accident or a result of rushed production that the staff will later go back and fix, it's the idiosyncratic personal style of episode director Shigeyasu Yamauchi being allowed to run wild.

Very much so, and don't forget there is also Junichi Hayama, the animation director for this episode, too.

Hm? I didn't see anything wrong with the animation style. If anything, the characters looked a little older in this episode, but I thought it was so that the "sex" scene wouldn't see super awkward. Not that it wasn't already anyways.

I thought that same thing. I really didn't notice anything either other than the characters looking older. It was only when they got to the cave and met that queen that I noticed anything and even then, I thought that it suited the environment they were in.

I would have liked to have seen them go a little further. Not bj's and oral but just staring off only to notice that mole rat staring at them with that look.

The faces of the kids already look odd in the first scene they were on, and the further into the episode the more out-of-character they look and the details of the characters and background start to be skimped as well, and not to mention glaring mistake like forgetting the mark on the queerat's forehead halfway into the episode..

I don't agree with this. The character's faces are more detailed than usual, with more elaborate noses and facial structures, while the backgrounds are consistently obsessively detailed thanks to Kenji Matsumoto - someone else Yamauchi pulled in with him from Casshern Sins - almost too obsessively detailed as the near-surreal landscape weakens the sense of place.

HE IS DEAD. See? The direction has a problem here. Even this simple scene is botched. The only explanation I can see is that the scene that indicates he is killed may have too much gore. They may put it back in the BD, perhaps.

Am I the only one who got that the monk was killed? As soon as I saw his face mask on the ground the first thought was "he dead".

I took a second look at the episode, but I would still stick with my observation. Perhaps they want to show that in the dark lighting condition the details are more obscured but I really don't see the character's faces being more detailed than usual, more prominent perhaps though. As for background, some scenes have more detailed but some, particularly inside the cave, look skimped.

In fact most people got that he was killed, but the fact that quite some people don't get it is an indication of botched execution. Perhaps they need to show stronger evidence than just the face mask dropping on the ground.

The hints were right there that the monk died. Every time he killed he felt pain and was weakened. He really killed a lot of mole rats and was in the middle of that explosion where nothing was left other than a crater. He was also escorting and protecting those kids since he took away their powers and now he isn't.

With the characters, it's mostly about extra lines being drawn on the faces. The normal character designs are fairly simple; see this example from episode 1:

And then compare it with this shot of Satoru from episode 5:

You can see the nose is drawn much longer than usual - this is consistent throughout the episode - plus there's an extra chin line below the lip. I could point to other examples too. Hayama's style of drawing characters is really not consistent with the base style of this show.

As for the art, I think it was pretty consistently carefully crafted. Even in the cave, you get backgrounds like this:

Which have a lot of attention paid to them; consider all the carefully drawn lines with unique patterns throughout the rock formation.

Seeing pics he really does look different. I think it's because was taking the lead and acting mature in this episode. I think that they wanted to match his looks with how he's like in the episode. It also lets us get used to their look before the time jump later on.

I'm only going to repeat this once, but this is not A-1 Pictures "slacking off" or losing their budget or not having time or anything of that nature. This is the people working on this particular episode being given the liberty to apply their personal styles to the material and make the aesthetic choices they desire, even if it is not consistent with the overall visual style of the show. (Shadows...) Whatever flaws may be in here, that is solely the fault of the deliberate decisions made by the staff unique to this episode.

Since Yamauchi only tends to show up once per show as an episode director, I don't think there'll be another episode which looks like this.

It's like when Osamu Kobayashi does a solo episode; e.g., TTGL #4 or Dantalian #9. In those cases, the art and animation is styled very differently from the rest of the show and leads to fans protesting about a lack of budget or lazy animators or whatever in a similar manner to what's seen here, but the only reason those episodes look the way they do is because the series director let Kobayashi do exactly what he wanted to do.

its pretty obvious to tell the monk is dead I mean if not just re-watch the episode. Otheriwse there would seriously be no other reason as to why Maria and Mamoru were freaking out so much really.

As for the animation I don't consider it a drop in quality just a different style which you guys should have been expecting because they did show this in the second PV if you remember. It definitely had a more casshern sins look which I am not against in the slightest. My only beef was the fact that it made the characters look older which did make me contemplate if there was some sort of time skip or not. Other than that I still enjoy this episode and this series in general.

edit: I do feel though the change in art style in making Satoru look a bit older kind of matches the seriousness and courageousness of his character in this episode now that i think twice about it.

The art definitely looked different; the characters looked older than in the previous episodes. I thought the art was a bit inconsistent it seemed to be really bad in the beginning and then it got a little bit better or I just got used to it. However art is not what mainly bothered me in this episode opposed to the previous one (more talk less action) this one was all action, no reflection what so ever. I was just waiting for them to take some time to discuss their situation: how will they escape, about them not having Cantus, what happened to others or anything really. But this seemed like an entirely different show purely because of this. The first few episodes showed the characters willing to discuss and engage in intelligent conversations and reflections, in this episode nothing like this happened.

Well said, it is a shame that people are too lazy to read the comments before posting mindlessly and repeating the same complains.

Personally, I like this older look for the characters, but the jumping from scene to scene like skipping the monk's death is unacceptable. Just terrible directing. Fortunately, this director won't be making another episode for this series for rest of this season, (i hope).

Same, I like this look way better than the less mature look. Having a more mature look makes it look more natural when they are being serious (like in this episode).

Anyways, it was a good episode. I hope they get their powers back. Satoru was pretty badass this episode, a good change from his usual annoying attitude.

The character design in this episode is far better than the original one. The style is different but it's not a problem, it makes this anime more unique. I think that art style change between episode works fine with unusual anime like this one.

The problem here isn't that they used a different style, the problem is that the execution of said style was just horrible. A lot of scenes (the opening, the apparent sex scene) were so poorly done it was almost impossible to follow what was going on. I mean, did they even have sex? Was Saki into it or not (with the flashbacks to what the library-thing creature said about their behavior)? Everything happened so fast and so vaguely it was a complete mess. I got that the monk died in the explosion but I can totally understand that some people didn't, as I rewatched that scene three times in a row because I was seriously thinking my Media Player codecs got messed up or lagged the video or something, it was so bad.

While such style changes might work for certain shows, to allow this on a show that follows such a strict narrative was just a bad decision, because it completely broke up the story progression and therefore the entire series. I can only hope this episode is the black sheep of the show and nothing like this happens again because it would ruin the show beyond recovery.

Yeah, animation of this ep was very sub-par, so many close-ups, art seems blurry and character design somehow different. Almost like work of another unskilled studio.

Some scenes were so messy that viewer simply cannot get what just happened. If it was made "artistic" on purpose it was bad directing decision else it was bad job done. I have sorta mixed feelings, I was quite disappointed with ep5 because of this (it is really bad when you start thinking about how animation is out of place during show and not concentrating on story). Let's hope next episodes will be better.

The monks death wasn't skipped, you literally saw him take a blow dog to the face, draw the conclusion, he is dead although it was a different style, it still got the messages across, while I don't think it was effective enough, there are still far too many people watching this show with their brains off.

1: They didn't have sex.
2: The monk is dead.

Wow what an episode, I can see the differences in animations compare to first several episodes, but it didn't matter much cause I still enjoyed Shinsekai like I used to.

But well ... it took me several minutes to think whether I missed something or not .... the monk was dead before I even realized and the group were chased by foreign species. Everything happened so fast, but that's what I like, they got themselves into a big mess this time. Dat romantic scene ... I'm shipping Satouru and Saki now, he is very reliable when the time comes, I thought he was just an annoying brat.

Good episode. And lol, the queen rat is kinda .... unique ...

A great episode, but the feeling was quite a bit different because of the animation in this episode.
It wasn't bad in any way, it just was well... different.
Now this felt like 10 minutes for me, which is something I rarely experience.
Different rat tribes and having war with each other, very interesting stuff.
I can't wait for more of this, this has so much potential!

They dont have anywhere to run, if they were to escape they'd be executed , won't they?

I don't know what to think of this episode, I like them together but I'm still really confused about these clans and that queen or whatever that was.

They totally looked older in this animationstyle.
idk why I was here but I'm prob back to playing Hunt: Showdown 1896 again when you read this

I wasn't really bothered by the 'new' style of art, I actually liked it.
And I think Satoru and Saki are cute together. ^^

Can someone clarify. The last 5 pages have confused me. What exactly was skipped/changed from the novel. The monk is dead? His death was shown in the novel? What about the scene between saki and Satoru?

I didn't hate the new style, I was just slightly bothered by it, but well, whatever.
It was a very good episode ! :D

But I'm a little confused over that intimate moment between Saki & Satoru, because it seemed so natural for them ( until Saki taught about it )
So, if I did understand, It's natural for them to have sex and they have done it several time before ?! Because, as the flashback showed, that computer from last episode said that people get rid of their stress & anxiety through intimate sexual behavior

Hand job and blow job before realizing the rats looking at them apparently and the monk died in both animu and novel.

I don't see why everyone's complaining about the art. O.o Didn't see anything wrong with it at all.

That said, Satoru was actually quite the badass this ep. Considering shipping Satoru and Saki now. :D

This is by far the worst episode not only that but they also pretty much ruined the whole build up from the last few episodes with the horrible animation and disjointed jumpy story.

You know even in the first minute of this episode something was feeling very off about it and it was putting me off. Then the story and everything just becomes so disjointed or like someone else said a powerpoint presentation with them only adapting probably what they thought was just enough for each part then jumping forward each time. This episode was not even compareable to the other 4. Last episode we had what 10mins of world explanation and background info (i liked that it was well done) then we get this episode which seems to be skimming through the material and cramming as much as they can in making it confusing and rather bad.

So many things are just left half done and that whole sex scene part was just awkward they pretty much tried to do it without doing it which just made bad, if they can not do it properly then they should of just left it out till the blu ray version or something or at least tried to do a better job on it while sticking to whatever constraints they may of had to deal with. I simply want a proper adaptation since i cant read the novel but they seemed to screw up this episode quite badly.

The animation did get worse and no not just because of the art style change it was because it was animated like crap. When they were speaking sometimes their mouths did not even move that is just lazy and tbh it threw me off a few times. Not to mention what the hell was with all the random smiles on their faces at times if i could be bothered i would post screenshots of them all because i kept seeing alot of them, but sadly i can not. There was one right in the start when Maria was resting her head on Saki's back Maria randomly smiles when saki is freaked out by the explosion site also Saki talks but her mouth does not move in that scene wtf? Then there is the scene when Saki falls and Satoru is holding her Saki smiles again but it is a pretty weird smile then Satoru gives some weird look as well. There are number of other out of place smiles all throughout the episode if they are explained or makes sense through the characters inner monologue or some other way in the novels then they should of shown/presented it better some way. If those smiles are just down to the someone on the anime staff then they what is wrong with them? Dont put random out of character crap in.

I am so sick of A-1 and them cutting corners in animation and their sceenshot scenes (often when action starts) in their anime. I have been noticing it alot recently a very good example would be Sword Art Online with their horrible screenshot fights that constantly pop up in it. I was worried about the same thing for Shinsekai when it started but for the first 4 episodes it was pretty good, then we got this one and everything just dropped........

Well i could go on and on but this has already become a wall of text so i want to stop. I just hope this is the only horrible episode because i want this anime to be good and to be a good adaptation so lets hope so.
