Well I'm pretty sure if you've seen a fair bit of anime, you would have come across a few series that focuses on after school clubs. Now while I was in high school(back mid 90's), the only clubs available were sports clubs or the famous "go-home or hang-out-with-friends" club, with myself joining the latter. It wasn't till I was in college that I had even heard of circles(a gathering of people who are into the same hobby as yours).

So my question is, how much has changed to now? To those still going to high school, are there clubs running in your school similar to what you see in anime?(eg. like in K-ON or Haruhi) And how serious are your classmates about them? Do you belong in a club yourself? Same question goes for those who have graduated high school as well.

They never really had many after school clubs at my high school either besides sports. The only one I can think of really was the robotics teams. During the season we pretty much had to stay after school everyday and we ended up having to spend pretty much our entire spring break as well working on our robot as well. It was quite fun actually because besides our competition robot we also built various other ones such as a drag racing robot and a flamethrower robot. Other than that though we really didn't have anything like the clubs you see in anime though.

There was really no clubs at my high school that would meet after school. When I was in high school they'd just meet at lunch and stuff. I think we had an outdoor club, that did rock climbing and stuff, but I can't really remember. Overall, it was boring stuff.

I know we have clubs in my college, but I haven't really paid attention to them, nor do I see many groups meeting. The only group I've ever seen meet regularly and not just being "MM KAY GUYS, I WANT OUR CLUB TO BE ____" talks, is some weird board game club. It's basically all the freaks of my school, and a bunch of old pedo. looking men, that scream very loudly while playing roleplaying board games. I swear half of the people in that club aren't even students at the school.

It's not really "cool" to be in clubs.

I joined the 'Tomodachi' club at my college, but I only went once. I would go, but then I would have to do group activities.

I was the same. I went to the Harry Potter club for awhile, but it's so tedious to stay after and wait for the club to start. Especially since I commute. Bleh.

I wish we had the Japanese system where clubs are socially required basically. It's good to have that type of fellowship when you're young.

My high schools didn't really have after school clubs aside from sports teams and drama clubs that only meet around the time of plays (you can't just join them either unless you're doing sets, you have to try out for them). Most of our clubs take place during school, in a period set aside known as "club period".

Actually, it's kindof scary because it's so easy to just want onto a college campus and step right into a club meeting. After all, the meeting times are plastered on posters everywhere. Eep.

There's a bunch of clubs in the college I go to, but I haven't given any thought to joining one or visiting to see what it's like. Apparently there's an anime club but I don't know anything about it. Back in high school I didn't join any clubs.
Here's my activity for high school:
Clubs: 0
Extracurricular activities: 0
School events: 0

My little sister is in high school and she's the president of the martial arts club. But being a high school martial arts club in the US there's no dojo room or anything. They just take a bunch of mats and lie them on the floor and practice.

I wasn't very involved in HS either. It became a problem when all I had to rely on for applying for colleges was my grades. Stupid extracirrics.

There's a ton of clubs here including an anime club which I'm not apart of (because it's full of weird people and a ton of gothic people who are all depressing and stuff..)

and the only time I was in a club was in middle school and that was Track-and-Field (they called it an intramural) I was actually the best person there *laughs secretly* and I even made it a goal to be on the track team in high school, but, that didn't happen because I'm a lazy SoB

Joined the anime club in my first year high school. Everybody was in their last year and it was disbanded after that.

Joined the concert band in my school starting from second to last year. We had 2 meetings per week and did some parades/concert/contest like around 5-10 times a year.

Last year of high school, me and a couple of guys made the math club so it'd look good on scholarship applications. It wasn't after school, mostly at lunch times because we all had better things to do after school ended. And we didn't do any math except playing cards. Good times.

Wanted to join the tennis team on my last year, but I can't stand doubles, and my serves suck like hell.

I'm in the anime club in university now, but we barely do anything. Think I need more relevant clubs to boost my medical school chances. I guess I can opt for a position in the club, like volunteer coordinator or something, maybe.

Actually, a guy I knew let me into the astronomy club, but I was utterly disappointed when they only had one of those huge observatory satellites in an obscure location in the physics building, instead of say, a bunch of smaller telescopes in which people can share and watch the stars on a roof somewhere. LIKE IN ANIME.

I've joined (and promptly quit) quite a few clubs during high school. Environmental Action Club, Book Club, FFA ('cause I took Floriculture that year), and I even managed to get myself kicked out of a community-service club (just to put on my college apps, to boot!). But overall, most of the clubs at my school are fairly lame. The anime club got shut down due to "inappropriate viewing material" (well, it's anime, duh!), and we had a Yu-Gi-Oh club that lasted a year. But yeah. This year, it's go-home-and-watch-anime club!

Hmmm... Our school doesnt really have afterschool clubs. There were a few lunch time ones, though they aren't really counted as clubs, various sport clubs - I cant play sports at all, music related clubs - I cant really play a musical instrument, religious clubs, the book club, the gardening club and some other random clubs.

So I'm in no clubs and dont exactly plan to be in one.

chess club
social arts club
math club
yuri club

One reason I hate my school, there are no clubs.

Well except for the various sports teams you can join, fund raising committees, chess club and music orchestras.

I really wished my school had such a thing as an Anime club, or any culture based club, but unfortunately... Here's hoping the uni I plan to go to has clubs.

One reason I want to go to a Japanese school.

I never joined any clubs when I was in high school. In fact, I can't remember if I joined any clubs and they're usually held during class hours. I don't remember what it's called but it's a like break time after 1st period is over and there would be 40 minutes until 2nd period on Tuesdays through Fridays.

I joined the Jazz Army at the beginning of the last semester. Including me, the club has about 12 or so members. Obviously, we rehearse jazz pieces and later play them during school concerts/festivals as the "pre-music". I don't think everyone in the club takes it that seriously, though.

well considering how enthusiastic you see some characters are about clubs in anime(could be other media as well, haven't checked), I thought times might have changed for a lot of high school kids these days.

Without sounding like an old grandpa, back in my day, unless you had legs like a horse and arms like a gorilla, the only clubs were sports. If we had some of the clubs seen in anime at our school, I know I would have definitely stayed back just to join one. Not only does it help kids socialize with other kids in a good way(I ended up socializing with the hang-out-with-friends-after-school-club' and took up smoking), but it also helps bring out a kids talents such as art or music.

The only club I recall from when I was in High School that actually made notice was the Fashion Club. It was just a bunch of 16-18 year olds being eye-candy, no problem there. The fashion shows the Club did actually produced money unlike those over-priced candle/ice cream/cookie packages for fundraisers/donations/goats. It was a short-lived club though. I think the BoE took action and stopped the club because they were butthurt.

If anything, I'd love if clubs became more prominent in school where it was a requirement and it was something more than "Meet once a week and play with yourself." To see it successfully done would have to involve redoing the dreadful school system we have along with attitude of the american students. blahblahblah rant.

However! Now that I'm in college, clubs are being brought to my attention as they are plastered everywhere along with the "Will you join my club?!" Personally, I would prefer there being an anime club that didn't involve the Big 3 or... hell, a Starcraft club would be great.

IMO it's not the club and what the club does which determines whether ppl wanna join or enjoy it's activities but rather the personalities of the members within the club, why do some ppl rather observe animated characters enjoy their clubs than to go out and join a club on their own?
Because anime characters, mannerisms, speech/voice, appearance, colours sets the mood and since you are observing you don't feel obligated to put on your mask like u do due to social protocols/expectations etc.

In addition anime characters are generally nice so you can join a "club" which does absolutely nothing and just hang out with these animated characters & it would still be a awsome "club".

I will live on no matter what... so I can meet you once again.

I graduated high school a few years ago but I actually have very fond memories of club. During my freshman year, these kids made an after school anime club in one of the teacher's class rooms. As the years went on it varied from teacher to teacher, but it was still the same club. We watched animes and it changed depending on a vote on if people want something else or if they really wanted to keep watching the same thing. Also for holidays (or week of a certain holiday) we'd play a themed anime or Japanese movie.
For example,we watched Noroi on Halloween one year and then a few days after we watched Cat Soup. For the anime group that I had hung out with during high school,it was definitely a haven and everyone was pretty serious about it (until more and more freshmen came and by the time I was a senior the club was almost going to ruin unfortunately). During my Junior year of high school I actually was the vice president and it was a good year!
All in all, high school I was in anime club. College now? My college has zero clubs worth going to at the moment. The one I plan to transfer has a few and I've yet to look into them so can't say about that!

School in Australia doesn't really have clubs.. but I guess I could call what I'm in a school club.

I'm part of the Leo's Club. Basically, any weekend I'm free, or the days I'm free on school holidays, I'll head out in a pink shirt, holding a tin, collecting donations from my local area of different things such as natural disasters, poverty, charity etc.

I'm only new though, but I'm quite proud of myself.
I used to be a slacker and did shit all, pretty much.
Though free time does make it easier to socialize, chill with friends, this feels a lot more fulfilling.

Even if this didn't contribute to a great resume, I'd still be signing up.
