Well, I think I have a better understanding for all the love triangle characters, and the episode was very well orchestrated. Very intense stuff all around.

Absolutely spectacular episode, start to finish. This is definitely, as of now, the emotional peak of the show. Everything about the episode--every scene, from Kyosuke's confrontation with Hiro, to the rooftop scene with the disappearing girl, to Hiro's conversation with Kei, was executed to near perfection. They really pulled out all the stops with this one, as the consistently excellent artwork and music just got even better, beautifully complementing all the drama going on. Not to mention, there's a whole slew of symbolism and metaphors--I loved the constant juxtaposition of Hiro's love life with forked roads and that of his choice between academics and mangas.

And then, of course, there was the phone call scene. My god. This really was one of the best extended 100 seconds of anime I have ever seen. While the initial countdown was somewhat annoying and tedious, it definitely got better towards the end with the increasing drama. Scenes like this just aren't complete without musical and artistic nuances. The way the music intensified as the sun slowly rose over the horizon, then the fade to black, until Hiro suddenly directly enters the scene and reintroduces the vibrant colours...beautiful.

Glad that Hiro's sorted out his priorities, and as of now, Hiro x Miyako is pretty much set ^_^

If ef keeps up with this level of quality to the end, it'll probably get a 10 from me. Damn. This was good.

This episode was pure proof that the Hirano/Kei/Miyako arc is far more deep and far more entertaining than Renji/Chihiro.

I actually really liked this ep.

Spectacular episode. I'm so happy that Hirono chose Miyako and the phone conversation countdown was just great. I especially loved how they were cut off and it was in black and white and then Hirono showed up and it transitioned into color. I guess this half of the show is done. Looking forward to the conclusion to Chihiro and Renji

Same here, it was an absolutely brilliant episode. I can't believe that something could rival Clannad. Very happy with the outcome. I was scared for a bit when I thought he might pick Kei after all during the confession scene from her, but it all turned out in my favour =]

Kindda disapointed that Hirono didn't choose Kei. I kindda hate Myako so I allways thought Kei was better for Hirono. Oh well... the phone scene was briliant! Gotta give SHAFT some love when it deserves!

i find that the conclusion between kei and hirono was much better than miyako and hirono

what i hate more than liars is what miyako did when she made him pick between kei and herself in a situation where kei could've been seriously injured, - its like a guy has to pick between a girl who might suicide if you don't stop her or stay with a girl who is safe and if you leave she'll break up with you.

in the end, it was a great episode.. even though i didn't want miyako to win, this episode didn't disappoint

I initially was a bit worried about Miyako's possessiveness in the beginning. But as the story progressed, I found that I could accept it. Given her history with love (in general), she has come to learn about what she needs/wants out of a relationship. She wants to be somebody's world, which may be a tad bit irrational...but I have to respect the fact that she was up front about it. However, I wasn't a big fan of the "choose me or Kei" scene, but then again if she hadn't done it she wouldn't have been staying true to her character.

Gotta love that phone scene though. I didn't expect it to actually count down the 100 seconds. And I'm a bit amazed that Hirono was able to find her phonebooth in such a short period of time...he must be quite the bicycle rider. >_>

So beautiful! Can't wait for Chihiro/Renji to wrap up.

It was a good episode, but the scene at the phone became a little anniying, even it was a great touch.

Anyway ef hasn't been able to affect me on the emotional level, and Im more interested in Chihiro's story line.

I kinda hate the fact that they slept together, but I guess it turned out to be not so bad.. It would be great to have friend like the camera dude, if only he's not a womanizer(I think Hiro Hiro said that once before), I would like Kei to end up with him :D

Am I the only one that was angry with him for choosing miyako? :o

Don't get me wrong, I still loved the series ( haven't seen melodies yet though ) but I just got really mad at him for choosing miyako. I really disliked miyako, still do. No matter how rough her life was, the way she forces hirono to choose her and her alone and not look at anyone else anymore really rubs me the wrong way. The last episode redeemed her a bit on that side, but that wasn't good enough for me =/

I also just liked kei way more I guess...

Camera guy's sudden understanding of Hiro's former indecisiveness about his feelings towards Kei was a bit too convenient in my opinion, and I find it weird he thought Hiro should have assumed Kei loves him that way. It would have been better if he just smacked him and told him his indecisiveness has hurt Kei, but even tht's a bit of a stretch. Maybe he just assumed his habit of preferring to not push an issue to a conclusion if there's a chance he gets hurt would lead him to have behaved like that and happened to be right.

But he had a point and helped Hiro make a decision instead of leaving everything hanging. And the call scene was not the best it could have been to say the least. But while some characters' insight to it was a bit unnatural, the hidden truths in the relationship between Kei and Hirono were really well built up and realistic. Kei's confession scene was amazing and it was so happy to see Hiro find Miyako. 4/5

Not bad episode, though I was really annoyed in it`s beginning by Kyosuke and that old anime morality about making choice and so on... But the end was great, I liked the way their phone conversation was shown and, by the way, I support Hirono`s choice.
But a full episode devoted to this story means that I`d have to watch about Renji`s and Chihiro`s storyline in next episode... It might be boring...(((

throughout the first half of the episode, i seriously had thoughts of dropping this series and its rating....

but after hiro was finally able to make his decisions between kei and miyako, all i could say was FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

i was ready to fuck shit up when kei and hiro were talking about going back to how things were, i thought it would finally be the end of miyako. it wouldve been SO horrible to end that way, especially with kei fulfilling her wish of "erasing miyako"
with a mindset like that, i couldnt really stand to have kei as the victor

the final phone call had me in tears ;_;
just as it blacked out, hiro comes like a prince in shining armor to rescue his princess

i could NOT have asked for a better ending for hiro and miyako, i was just rooting for those two since the beginning, even through kei's final confession to hiro

with this, the series really cemented a 10/10 rating for me!!!
let's just hope that renji and chihiro find their happy ending as well

Just who is this weird lady with the weird hat? What relevance does she have to the plot, if she was taken out of the story would we even notice?

Also I think they should have left out the sans, kuns and onii chans. It just doesn't flow right in English. Its a verbal speed bump, slowing down the sentence unnecessarily whenever they say it. Onii chan could have easily been switched for big brother since it has the same amount of syllables.

Miyako's lines at the beginning of the episode were really telling of her character. For a while I was wondering why in response to her troubles at home she didn't just dive into a bunch of meaningless relationships, as is seen all too often. However, I realize now just how cold of reasoning that was for me. A meaningless relationship is exactly what she does NOT need. "I don't want to have anything to do with someone who won't cherish me. If that's the case, I'd rather be alone...I don't want to disappear from someone's heart again." The fact that she realizes this and acts on it shows real maturity and depth to her character, and has really risen my opinion of her.

That breakup/confession scene with Kei...wow. The parallel to the manga and the development of their emotions through their conversation was beautifully executed.

Well, this show finally did it. I shed a tear or two so far, but the final phone call scene really got the waterworks going. Having known Miyako's past for a while, it didn't dawn on me that Hiro didn't know of it until the end of her "babbling" right before he interrupted her, and then it just hit me all at once, with his lines, her past, and the music...oh man that was excellent.

I love Kei.

Perhaps I've been too heartless recently, but this episode wasn't as emotional as I thought it'd be. The impact wasn't there. As others have pointed out, some of the things said were way too convenient. But I guess a wishy-washy protagonist would've been even worse.

In any case, the episode did one thing really well, and that was the scene between Kei and Hiro. All the way until this episode, I disliked Kei--she was the childhood friend who seemingly had no right to be with Hiro. She caused her twin sister's amnesia. She treated Miyaka very poorly.

But Kei's final confession made me think otherwise. She's human, like everyone else. Ef is one of the only shows that emphasizes how close childhood friends really are, instead of assuming the audience understands the relationship. Kei genuinely cared for Hiro, and she was desperately afraid of losing him to anyone else, more so than Miyaka. Hiro was there for her the whole time, esp. through her sister's accident. Her hobbies developed because of Hiro. And vice versa. It was a mutually beneficial relationship.

In other words, Kei was afraid of losing her other half. Her breakdown was genuinely heartfelt. Honestly, I just wished they kissed right then and there. End of story. Is it worth it to let go of a person who helped you succeed, who is your greatest supporter, for some troubled new girl? Probably not.

I didn't like the coutndown sound, it interrupted the conversation. And while appropriate, the switching to the countdown, being all black etc. was also annoying. Maybe only doing it ever so often would have been better.

Also, the "don't leave", "choose me" etc...it's annoying, no matter how believable it is. Hirono clearly did not "choose" Kei when he ran after her, he was worried about her.Why did Miyako force this on him, especially when she "knows" she will lose? Why not accept the fact that he loves you but still cares about other people? Would she have reacted the same way if he would have chased afer Kyosuke? I don't think so. So why force the "bad end" up onto yourself?

It's better explained here than in most anime, but still.

Same when Kyosuke hit Hirono. So it was all his fault? It's not Kei's fault for not telling him sooner, not Miyako's fault for budging in when she knows about it, not both girls fault they make him chose on the spot instead of accepting that he doesn't know yet, not their fault for not talking about it with each other and not Kyosuke's fault for not telling his best friend when he knows aswell?

Some anime even extend it to a competition where both know each others moves and try to come up with something better, here, they met at the railroad crossing, where Kei declared war (and actually forced Miyako down this road), and then again in Hirono's appartment.

Nice move everyone. Everyone knows better, everyone excepts Hirono to do something, but doesn't tell him. And it's his fault. He could have done better, he could have decided right away, he could have made the move on Kei when he thought they would become lovers sooner or later anyways, and some more stuff. So he made mistakes - like they all did.

I bet if he would have gone with Kei because Miyako couldn't even wait until he was sure his younger sister was okay it would be his fault for breaking Miyako's heart, and he would be stupid pervert for abusing the situation she was in. Well okay, maybe not in this anime, not the perbert part.

It looks like that fight was what he needed to come to a decision, and everyone is kinda okay with how it ended, but it was not nice and very cliché.

Still a good episode, but ithe previous two or so were way better.
