The Slice of Life Club will be hosting a Cute Competition for the next seven weeks. It's pretty much going to be the same thing as our Moe Competition, except for the fact that characters from overly popular series weren't allowed in the contest (since they always win). It's time to give other cute girls a chance to shine. There are four different groups with 32 girls in each group. One girl from each group will go on as a finalist to face off against each other in two championship rounds. As you can see, we have quite the long lineup of girls for our first round. Half of them will be eliminated after this round, though, so please vote to help us decide who stays and who goes!

P.S. Due to the club having so many members, we aren't able to send out newsletters to all of our members. If you would like to receive newsletters from the Slice of Life Club, post here.
Our newsletters include notifications on when our competition rounds start, club event information, information on our monthly banner contest (new feature starting in September), news about updates and changes to the club, etc.

P.S.S We are in need of active card makers!
We do a few monthly editions and we really need some more card makers to help out with those. If you are interested in applying, click here.

Looks like I was a bit late to the party LOL, just finished reading it. Honestly, the ending wasn't that bad, I mean... Manami finally showed her human side, instead of the always perfect childhood friend she always puts on in front of kyousuke and you can't really blame her for that. Also I don't think they animated vol 11 (still haven't watched the final ep yet), but there's a side character story about a red hair girl from kyousuke's junior high days, and that was the reason Manami told kirino off -- because kyousuke's "leave it to me" lifestyle has brought him so much pain.

Anywayyy, it was a decent bittersweet ending, it was good of the author to finish it open ended, yet leave enough clues as to what might transpire. This way, you won't gross out the mainstream folks (keep in mind they're models for a Tokyo train line lol..), and leave us to fill in the blanks. I mean at this point the only thing stopping them is their inability to be independent of their parents right? Kyousuke still needs to go to uni before finding a job, kirino got school and her modeling career, but nothing would stop them from eloping when they become fully capable adults, assuming that you believe their feelings will stand the test of time -- which I do :D Afterwards, they could just change his/her name, move to one of Japan's billion islands, and adopt a kid. Then presto, waifu kiririn true route <3

According to the tl site, it's 85% done :D
But anyway, the game is structured like little busters, where there's these 4 routes that u have to complete, and then there's the final route, and the big reveal.

The main heroine's storyline is epic beyond words, but not in a cheesy kind of way. The protagonist as well as the support characters are also amazingly well written. It's hard to describe what's great about the story without spoiling it, but let's just say they all live in a very interesting universe, with its own sets of rules, that the author created. I also like the fact that the game doesn't rely on deaths (like Clannad), but rather the circumstances of their relationship to be tragic.

All in all, I think the main heroine, Shinku, is definitely my favourite character of all time.

Just finish Irotoridori no Sekai, never cried so hard in my life, probably one of the best VN I've ever read.

I wanna ask you, having finished Hoshizora no Memoria (I haven't finished it yet myself), was the 'true' arc for mare amazing? Since they're made by the same company, I would hate to have missed a great ending if I gave up because the side routes were average.
ideoidiom Feb 13, 2013 9:46 PM
Hmm, contrary to what you might think, what grabs me the most in VNs isn't actually the romance. I mean it used to be when I started on Clannad, but that was kind of the spillover from Clannad/AS. Why? You guessed it. VNs at times, can be as boring as fuck. Especially if you're going into it with the same mindset as anime and manga, which is often much faster paced. So this pretty much eliminates most of the eroges where the plot is basically _____ (insert fetish). Now I'm not gonna be all high and mighty and say that I'm immune to these tropes, but that alone usually won't convince me to even finish tedious common route (and I usually don't), not to mention the additional 'quests'. Clannad is pretty much the only exception, and even there, there is a pretty decent subplot running in the background.

Looking back (I'm quite surprised myself actually), I've actually only 'finished' (not just 'sampled', as in at least one route) less than 10 games. And of these titles, I think the only commonality I can draw is that the heroines in these stories are there to "accompany" you on the story, whereas the common public perception of a VN is one where the bishoujo is the end all be all --- which, unfortunately, is true most of the time.

I guess, what I'm trying to say is, there's a lot more potential in VN as a storytelling medium than you'd think.

Btw, have you made your way to Saya no Uta yet? It's by Gen Urobuchi, the dude who wrote Madoka and Fate/Zero.
ideoidiom Feb 13, 2013 4:43 PM
Sooo... how far have you ventured into the VN territory?
ideoidiom Feb 7, 2013 7:07 PM
Ohh, I see. From the looks of it, it sounds like it's got a decently well written story :D I just loove mysteries where there are tonnes of threads. I'll definitely get to it when I got the time.

At any rate, I personally don't find reading things to be nearly as impactful as movies/animations. I don't know, I guess it just has to do with how I absorb the material. I just think that voice acting and songs/soundtracks are an art form in itself, and that they add another layer to storytelling if you put them all together. For me, mangas will always be entertaining, but it will never be as immersive nor can it be a replacement for anime/VNs.

So I just finished Steins;Gate and yes, it was crazy good. You really should check it out, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at what anime still has to offer.

Oh and, you should keep a lookout for Baldr Sky (same group that did Rewrite is working on it), it was pretty fun.

What's it about? Judging by the vndb summary I can't tell much... Also, favourite route?

There are some shows that works on a weekly basis, there are some that just fails to continuously grab your interest, regardless of how good it is as a whole. A lot of stuff based on manga is meant to be watched weekly, because that's how the magazine works - it gets published by chapters, so they have these 'hooks' at the end of each chapter that keeps you interested in the next, like Kuroko no Basket. This is probably why stories with short arcs or are entirely self contained works if you watch it weekly.

But for shows that are trying to tell one story (ie a 24 episode arc), the storytelling really suffers from it, so I end up enjoying less. Plus, I'm running out of good shows to watch, so I gotta be environmental. :)

Whoa finally started rewrite huh, been sitting on my drive for awhile, hadn't even noticed the english translation is done. Maybe I should check it out soon. I'm too absorbed in steins;gate atm though, I only realized how amazingly clever the show is the second time around by marathoning it, which just further reinforces my hatred for watching shows as they air. I think I'm gonna check out the VN for the other routes after I'm done.

Keep me updated on Rewrite :D
