This isn't a which anime is best thread. The anime that get more viewers are the shounen anime because of their demographic and mood. Which makes them perfect for introducing new viewers.

Now this is actually a brilliant idea. It does after-all mix together 3 different genre's.

After this season ends I'm definitely going to recommend Tonari to friends,

Definitely. Agreed. It's a great starter shoujo for anyone AND it's excellent too. XD

Maybe. But some people might be thrown off because it's so long?

Haruhi and Elfen Lied definitely won't work. They'll think you're some weird f#ck up if you show them Elfen. And Haruhi will never get them into anime. Endless Eight? They'll have a bad taste in their mouth about anime.
Death Note, maybe.

And you should probably show them a classic Shounen.

Well I showed my best friend Ouran HSHC first and she loved it. But she was already kinds used to seeing anime, because she would draw manga characters.

For guys I would show them Death Note or Soul Eater.

For girls I would show them Ouran, Fruits Basket, Lucky Star.

It all depends on their personality ^.^

Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Cowboy Bebop are all sufficiently popular and impressive, I think.

However, I'd say a good starting point is Digimon. It's actually good, and they've probably seen it before.

It's pretty individual what works but classic shounen should work with most males.
Other things: Black Lagoon, Hellsing: Ultimate, Code Geass, Death Note, Bebop, Trigun

For movies I would try Redline or Summer Wars.

I would say it's all depends on the person. I'm a firm believer that there is an Anime for every person.

Death Note 100%. It was my first anime (besides like Pokemon) and I never looked back! I watched subs cause that is what was on netflix, but the dub isn't (that) bad.

Highschool of the Dead would also be a good one, or the dub at least. The dub, imo, is very well done and sounds good, and is pretty "Americanized".

I'd actually stay away from romance, because when I was new to anime, romances pissed me off. I guess it's just the differences between american and japanese culture, but they are too uptight and take things too slow. Like being embarrassed to hold hands in public when dating and stuff. If you're not familiar with the culture, the whole shyness and innocence can seem a bit unnatural and forced.

Genocyber and School Days...

Seriously tho any Ghibli and Satoshi Kon movies.

I lol'd hardcore. I just remember seeing Bennett the Sage's review of Genocyber and thought, "yeah, that's the last thing I'd show to someone if I wanted to get them hooked to anime."

I'd recommend a movie over a series if you're sitting down with someone and watching it. Unless they're already into foreign films, Japanese, or fluent in the language, I'd recommend a dub.

My post wasn't directed at you. I was just commenting on the lack of movies suggested.

As to whether a Full Metal Alchemist movie would be a good introductory piece, I don't know. I don't really have an opinion on any of them because I haven't seen any. Maybe a FMA movie would be perfect.

I'd shy away from a film that's based off it's own series unless it's something you can watch without having to have prior knowledge of the show's plot, characters, setting, etc. to understand what you're watching.

It all depends on the person. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks an' all.

FMA:B isn't a good option because someone not familiar with anime would undoubtedly not sit through 64 episodes.

Baccano! would be my choice.

When I got my friends into anime, I showed them basic, simple stuff that's easy to follow.

Naruto is a good starter, or any of the big, several hundred episode shows.
My friends liked Ouran High School Host Club and Vampire Knight.
Another good idea is to show them the Ghibli movies.

A quite old thread but who cares, new members also want to show their thoughts.

It's difficult since everyone has different taste. My friend apparently got hooked by Fairy Tail and I'm by Angel Beats!.

Most people thought anime is kiddie. So, I think Death Note would do well to wipe that assumption from their mind.

Just pick an action series, honestly. Nobody new to anime is gonna understand anime humor that we all know and love, nor the melodramatic Japanese high school romance anime that's out there.

Probably Code Geass, Death Note, SnK, Fate/Zero, or Psycho Pass

On their own they aren't the "best" anime, but they are great gateway anime. They have an anime style of "action" to them, and they can sort of be related to certain TV shows. Those all factor in to making them great gateway anime.
It's natural for a person to deny he's a failure as a human being. That's why he searches for somebody who is more miserable than himself. That's why so much animosity exists on the internet. Those who aren't able to find a more miserable person, turn to the internet and call other people losers, even though they've never met. Just to make themselves feel superior. isn't that pathetic? There's a sense of security that comes from speaking badly of someone else. But that isn't true salvation. — Tatsuhiro Satou

Depends on genre. If it's shounen, nothing beats good ol' DBZ. It's what got me into anime.
Eminem meets Clannad
Just when you thought Clannad's OST was as sad as it could get ;_;

If you seen School Days, rewatch the ending while listening to A Little of Piece of Heaven by A7X. I guarantee laughs.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood!

It just totally pulls you in! Plus, the characters are likeable and the plot is really well thought out. The whole story just keeps building up into a big grand plot!

And it's 64 episodes, so it isn't as slow as some other anime and doesn't have arcs like some other anime. I think 64 episodes is a good amount - not too long, not too short.

So, my point is, if your friends are into action, fighting, superpowers, sci-fi, some comedy, some gore ; Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a great choice of anime to introduce them to! ^^

Would that work if the person was a bit older? We change opinions when we grow up, after all.

Angel Beats! or Code Geass. I got a few people interested by those shows.

Plz not Naruto. They usually turn into people that only watch shounen...dealing with those people is a nightmare.
